Henry Smith Jr.
Henry Smith Jr., 56, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1945, in Summerton, he was the son of Henry Smith Sr. and the late Annie Lee Brunson Smith. He attended Scott’s Branch High School and was employed at Pepsi Cola Company in Wilmington, N.C.

Survivors besides his father include a daughter, Leatha Marie Riley of Summerton; a brother, the Rev. Jonathen Smith and his wife Barbara of Summerton; four sisters, Stella Brown and her husband Hoise of Alabama, Odether Peguese and her husband Robert and William Mae Montgomery and her husband Harry of Thomasville, N.C., and Retha Thompson and her husband Ulysses of Manning.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Saturday in King Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jonathen Smith officiated.

Burial followed in Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

John Wright Jr.
John Wright Jr., 58, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 16, 1943, in Summerton, he was the son of Minnie Smith Wright and the late John Wright Sr. He attended Scott’s Branch Elementary School, Pineland Training School in Columbia, Pee Dee Center in Florence, and the School for Students with Disabilities and Special Needs in Manning until he became ill. He loved wood carving, running and swimming.

Survivors besides his mother include two brothers, Ervin Wright of Summerton and Franklin J. Wright of Forestville, Md.; and a sister, Lula Mae Wright of Summerton.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark AME Church. The Rev. Ernest Brown, pastor, officiated.

Burial followed in St. Mark AME Church Memorial Garden.

Ronald P. Bevell
Ronald Perry Bevell, 47, husband of Gail P. Bevell, died Friday, May 14, 2002, in the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born March 12, 1955, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the Rev. William Ray Bevell and Mildred Rollins Bevell. He worked in the mechanical metal fabrication industry for more than 25 years. The companies he worked for were Newton Brothers/Engineering, Sanders Brothers/Encompass and McIntosh Mechanical in Sumter and was President/Owner of Piedmont Metal Fabrication in Spartanburg. He retired to Goat Island and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton and parents of Belton include two sons, Ronald Perry II of the home and William Ray Bevell of Spartanburg; two brothers, Mike Bevell and wife Cathy of Anderson and Tim Bevell and wife Tina of Aiken; a sister, Tammy Rice and husband Jim of Belton; a granddaughter, Alyssa Bevell of Spartanburg; sister-in-law, Annie Larkin of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; a nephew, Yancey Bone and wife Crystal of Spartanburg; a niece, Tamara Adams and husband Guy of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a great nephew, Brandon Bone of Spartanburg; a great niece, Kassandra Adams of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and many other nieces and nephews.

Services were 5:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Carolyn Malphrus officiating.

A second service took place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the N. Church Street Chapel of Floyd’s Mortuary in Spartanburg.

Memorials may be made to the Summerton Police Department, P.O. Box 279, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Earlie Brailsford
Earlie “Juicy” Brailsford, 60, died Monday, May 13, 2002.

Born April 24, 1942, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Callie Gaymon Brailsford and the late Hampton Brailsford. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver. He held several different jobs in transportation, landscaping and carpentry.

Survivors besides his mother include a daughter, Kimberly Delay of Sumter; three brothers, Lee Brailsford and his wife Flossie of Sumter, Roddie Brailsford and his wife Millim and Manning Brailsford and his wife Lila of Columbia; three sisters, Elouise Hilton, Susan White and Clara Brown and her husband Howard of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie J. Chandler officiating along with the Revs. Roosevelt Boyd and Adrian J. McIlwain and evangelists Oree Ragins and Linda Conyers assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

David Brown
David “Nanna” Brown, 78, widower of Helen Williams Brown, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 5, 1923, in the Lynchburg section of Lee County, he was the son of the late Joe and Eva Sharp Brown. He attended Lee County public schools. In his youth, he joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church and later joined Bethlehem Baptist Church. He retired from Georgia Pacific after 40 years of employment as a firefighter.

Survivors include a son, David Brown Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Shirley Baxter of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a brother, James Brown and his wife Robertha of Alcolu.

Services were at noon in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

John Davis
Atlanta - John Davis Sr., 83, died Saturday, May 11, 2002.

Born Dec. 6, 1918, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late James and Selma Johnson Davis. He was educated in Clarendon County public schools and joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church at an early age. He later joined St. John Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the trustee board and was involved in the maintenance and renovation of the church. He was first married to the late Frances McClary in 1941 and later to the late Kathleen Bracey in 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He retired from Sumter Machinery Company and operated a mini farmers market.

Survivors include four sons, John Davis Jr., Leroy Davis and his wife Gloria of Atlanta, Teddy Davis and his wife Jackie of Goldsboro, N.C., and Daryl Davis and his wife Kendra of Charleston; two daughters, Nancy McClinton and her husband the Rev. Eugene and Helen Blackmon of Atlanta; three stepsons, Riley Bracey and his wife Patricia, Freddie Bracey and Jack Bracey of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Carolyn Johnson and her husband Andy, Elma Bracey and Carrie Mae Bracey of Sumter; a brother, McKinley Davis and his wife Barbara of New York, N.Y.; four sisters, Hattie Bogier of Thomasville, N.C., and Annie M. Thames, Sarah Walters and Thelma Prince of Jamacia, N.Y.; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Mae, who died in infancy.

Services were noon Saturday at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. C. Richburg officiating along with the Rev. Willie Wright, the Rev. Eugene McClinton, Elder Lawrence Rogier and evangelist Elizabeth Richburg assisting.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were trustees of the church and floral bearers were the Missionary Society.

Fred L. Dennis
Florence - Fred Legrand Dennis, 58, husband of Mary France Green Dennis, died Monday, May 13, 2002, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Born in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Oteloh Ellison and Mable Baker Dennis. He attended Newberry College and was employed as general manager of Jones Brothers Transport Inc.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Dibbe Edwards and her husband Bob of Apex, N.C., and Dana Via and her husband David of Clayton, N.C.; three grandchildren, Sara Edwards of Apex and Nash and Devin Via of Clayton; a sister, Annette Krasky of Columbia; three brothers, Ronald Dennis of Sylva, N.C., Charlton Dennis of Turbeville and Wayne Dennis of Manning; and his mother-in-law, Billie Green of Lynchburg.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hal and Milton Dennis.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday at Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.

Memorials may be made to New Life Rescue Ministries, 1020 W. Darlington St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Dorothy E. Bucy
Dorothy Edens Bucy, 80, widow of Willis R. Bucy, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Palmetto Baptist Hospital.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Myra Edens and Cornelia Jenkins Edens. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church at Oswego. She was a retired Civil Service Chief Accountant at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.

Survivors include a son, John J. Scott of Summerton; a daughter, Nancy Scott Benenhaley of Summerton; a sister, Jean Edens Cook of Stateburg; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Henderson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5575 Lodebar Rd., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Charlie Felder
Charlie Felder, 72, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 7, 1929, in the Paxville community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Willie and Viola Bracey Felder Palmer.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Felder and his wife Catherine of Sumter and Willie Felder and his wife Bunny of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Moten and her husband Walter of Sumter and Jimmie Lee Green of Sumter; an uncle, Eddie Bracey; an aunt, Alphenia Bracey; and a number of nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Mae Felder.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Irene Anthony and Ricky Simmons, pastor.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Lonnie B. Floyd
Lake City - Lonnie B. Floyd, 76, widower of Ruth C. “Joline” Floyd, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jehua Duffy Floyd and Everette Driggers Floyd. He was a retired grocery store operator, a farmer and a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Beth Lee of Lake City; two sons, Joel B. Floyd and Michael V. Floyd of Lake City; and six grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
