Earline Hilton
Earline Hilton, 69, widow of Willie E. Hilton, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 25, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Susan Dennis and the late Earl Mack. In her youth, she attended Mulberry Baptist Church. As an adult, she was a member of New Jerusalem Fire Baptized Holiness Church.

Survivors include four sons, William Hilton of Bennettsville, Michael Hilton of Baltimore, Timothy and Curtis Hilton of Sumter; eight daughters, Lou Anna Wilson, Irene Hilton, Willie Mae Singleton, Mary Ann Ford, Gloria Jean Gilliard, Shireen Hilton, Loutricia Hilton and Margie Hilton of Sumter; a brother, George Mack of Baltimore; a sister, Rosalee Ford; 31 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Mack.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Telley Gadson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. M.G. Walters and Wilbert Witherspoon.

Pallbearers were Jerome Bennett, Ruben Bennett, Cedric Green, Andy Thompson, Frankie Thompson, Gussie Sanders and Bernard Britt. Honorary pallbearers were The North Main Street Elite Club, Eugene McFadden, Grandeson James, William Lewis, Johnny Gore, Thomas Lowery, Robert Evans, Edgard Martin, Edward Blanding and James Pocher.

Emmaline R. James
Emmaline Rogers James, 73, wife of Isaac James Sr., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law.

Born April 11, 1929, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Daisy Rogers Sweat and the late Reverend Chapel Rogers. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Manning.

Survivors besides her husband and mother include four sons, Donald Lee James and his wife Barbara, and Isaac James Jr. and his wife Dora of Manning, Chapel James and James D. James of Lancaster, Pa.; five daughters, Daisy Carter and her husband Willie of Manning, Sophia Stephanie, Beatrice L. James, Roger Mae James and Bertha A. James of Lancaster, Pa.; a brother, John Williams of Sumter; a stepbrother, Thomas Sweat of Buffalo, N.Y.; three stepsisters, Eron Miles of Gainesville, Fla., Tammie Green of Pinewood and Lorena Gregg of New York, N.Y.; 33 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Gussie Ceasar officiating.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery.

The granddaughters served as the floral bearers.

Belva C. Johnson
Belva Coker Johnson, 90, widow of Wylie W. Johnson, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in a Florence nursing home.

Born Feb. 14, 1912, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Douglas Coker and the late Ellen Thigpen Coker. She was a dietitian at Clarendon Memorial Hospital of Manning. She was a member of Horse Branch Original Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also very active in the other organizations of her church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ellie J. (Fletcher Sr.) Johnson of Marion; three sons, Ralph J. (Pat) Johnson of Walterboro, Harris D. (Brenda) Johnson of Santee and G. Ashley (Marguerite) Johnson of Rock Hill; a sister, Nadine C. (James) Broad of Charleston; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Willie W. Johnson.

Services were noon Wednesday in Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Monroe Harrell officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jake Creech.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Johnson, Fletcher Johnson Jr., David Johnson, George Johnson, Billy Johnson and Eric Coker.

Richard D. Lee Jr.
Richard David Lee Jr., 78, widower of Rebecca Rhodes Lee, died Tuesday, May 22, 2002, in Manning.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Richard Balem Lee Sr. and Susan Lowery Lee. He was a member of Lodabar AME Church before joining Cypress Fork AME, where he was a trustee, pastor steward and class leader. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Kennedy Lincoln and her husband Mack of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, Benjamin Lee and Carnell Lee, of Philadelphia; a sister, Virginia Lee Hicks of Philadelphia; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cypress Fork AME Church in Alcolu with the Rev. Leroy Green officiating along with the Revs. Franklin McCants, I.B. Herbert, George Hicks and Jerome McCray assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Maxine H. Long
Maxine Hodge Long, 79, wife of Bertis Vinson Long, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at her home in Sumter.

Born May 29, 1922, in Yemassee, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Weston Hodge and Sudie Langford Hodge. She was retired from the Job Service at the State Department. She attended Newberry College and Draughon’s Business College. She was a member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two daughters, Carolyn Long Blackmon and husband Jerry F. of Sumter and Marilyn Long Warren and husband Thomas Kenneth of Sumter; a brother, Thomas Weston Hodge of Gainesville, Ga.; two sisters, Earline Hodge Boney of Blythewood and Margie Hodge Kennerty of Manning; two grandsons, Thomas Kenneth Warren Jr. and Michael Vinson Warren of Sumter; and three granddaughters, Kerri Blackmon, Sherri Blackmon Dagesse and husband Corey and Codi Warren of Sumter.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. George Gain officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Pallbearers were William Boney, Jack Hodge, Dr. Tom Hodge, Greg Hendrix, Corey Dagesse and Thomas Kenneth Warren.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Sarah P. McCray
Miami - Sarah Plowden McCary, 71, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 25, 1930 in Manning.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, David and Dorothy Plowden of Manning.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwill United Freewill Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. Shelby Hickson officiating.

Willard C. Ray
Willard C. Ray, 67, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Clarendon County Hospital.

The Glennville, Ga., native was the owner of Ray’s Roofing Company in Hilton Head, S.C. He served in the United States National Guard and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hilton Head. He was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Idell Martin Ray of Summerton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Tammy Ray of Bluffton, S.C., and Joel and Christi Ray of Columbia; five grandchildren, Ross, Erica and Jessica of Bluffton and Tory and Devan of Columbia; two sisters, Lois Harvey and Evelyn Haller of Meldrim; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in the Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery in Pooler, Ga.

Robert L. Ridgeway Jr.
Robert Lee Ridgeway Jr., 63, husband of Nettie Olivia Floyd Ridgeway, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 25, 1938, in Pinewood, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Ridgeway Sr. and the late Cora Lee Haley Ridgeway. He was a supervisor with CSX Railroad and was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Wilson.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Carolyn Olivia Lindler of Goose Creek and Shawnette R. McDonald of Florence; a son, Dr. Robert L. Ridgeway III of Manning; a sister, Mary Alsbrook of Manning; and six grandchildren.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Gain and the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Glen “Buck” Stone, Aubrey Johnson, Tommy Roark, Danny Holladay, Buddy Holladay, Gene Floyd, Mitch Richburg and Don Holladay. Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s Choir, Robbie Oakley, Mike Johnson, Walt Newman, Lionel Holladay, Ernie Rauber and Trey Holladay.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart and Lung Association.

Julian Sharpe
Julian “Bubba” Sharpe Sr., 89, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.

Born Nov. 6, 1912, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Amos Sharpe and Sarah Wells Sharpe. He was educated in Clarendon County public schools. He was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company as a railroad worker for many years before he retired.

Survivors include a son, Amos Sharpe of Baltimore; three daughters, Dorothy Burgess Singleton and her husband Maris of Pinewood, Elouise Sharpe Boyd of Sumter and Caro Sharpe Jackson and her husband Garfield of Baltimore; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Julian Sharpe Jr. and Aaron Sharpe; 10 brothers and nine sisters.

Services were 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifton Gaymon officiating, assisted by Elder Amos Burgess.

A private burial followed.

Dinah R. Smith
Dinah Richburg Smith, 98, widow of Augustus Owens and Levy Smith, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Hopewell Healthcare center.

Born June 16, 1903, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Richburg and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Stukes. She was educated in the Clarendon County public schools and was baptized at an early age into Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church. She joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist as an adult and later returned to Gum Spring Missionary Baptist.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas Owens and his wife Vera of Washington , D.C., John Washington Owens of New York City, Ferdinand Owens and his wife Hattie of Sumter and Augustus Owens Jr. and his wife Brenda of Sumter; a stepson, Edward Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five daughters, Lillie Ida Owens and Norvelle Frazier of Bronx, N.Y., Alice Owens of New York City, Ida Mae Ellison and her husband Samuel of Sumter and Frances Dingle and her husband Henry of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Reatha Bell Coard of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dorothy S. Witherspoon and her husband, John of Sumter; two sisters; 65 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; 57 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services were 1 p.m. Friday at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. O.J. Hannah, pastor, officiating and the Revs. James Carter, L.W. Walker Jr., C. Richburg and J.H. Pringle assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Odessa R. Stukes
Manhattan, N.Y. - Odessa Richburg Stukes, 59, wife of John Henry Stukes Jr., died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Calvery Hospital.

Born July 13, 1942, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Ruth Bennett Richburg and Moses Richburg. She attended Clarendon County public schools. After moving to New York, she was employed in the food industry for a number of years. She was a member of Covent Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. After moving back to Summerton in 1999, she attended Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Timothy John Stukes Sr. of New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Clifton Richburg and Fredrick Richburg of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Frankie James and Mirrel Simms of Baltimore and Verlette Richburg of New York, N.Y.; a godchild, Keisha O. Simms Cannon; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Services were 4 p.m. at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. O.J. Hannah officiating, assisted by the Rev. R. McFadden and Minister J. Jackson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
