Frederick L. Felder Jr.

Frederick Lomack Felder Jr., 52, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born May 13, 1949, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Frederick Lomack Felder Sr. and Elizabeth Clark Felder. He attended the public schools and Community College of Philadelphia. In his youth, he was baptized at Faith Emmanuel Baptist Church in Philadelphia and was a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors include a son, Cedric Felder of Philadelphia; a daughter, Ivy Felder of Philadelphia; two brothers, Lorenzo Felder of Manning and Jerome Felder of Philadelphia; a sister, Nora Jones of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sybil Lennon.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Massey, pastor of Charity Baptist Church of Philadelphia, officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Baptist Church of Manning.

Sally P. Von Linsowe

Sally J. Hjelta Prince Von Linsowe, 65, wife of Richard E. Von Linsowe, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at a Charleston hospital.
Born June 7, 1936, in Kewaden, Mich., she was the daughter of Carl and Francis Fremyer Hjelta.

She was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Manning and was employed by Robert Bosch Corp.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include two sons, William Von Linsowe and his wife, Holly, of Lincoln Park, Mich., and David Von Linsowe of Detroit, Mich.; four daughters, Bonny Bemus and her husband, Tim Haffer, of Rochester, Mich., Sandy Hodge and her husband, Steve, of Harrisburg, Pa., Christine Bazzel and her husband, Harold, of Detroit, Mich., and Jean Huffcut of Summerton; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Memorials may be made to the Grace Christian Fellowship Church building fund, P.O. Box 95, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Dorothy D. Perry

Dorothy Mae Dyson Perry, 51, widow of Bennie Lee Perry Sr., died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1949, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Stukes and Louise Jones Dyson. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a 1968 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She was employed at the Bank of New York for several years and worked at Caldor Department until her retirement. While in New York, she was a member of the usher board at Calvary Baptist Church, White Plains. She was active in the PTA and volunteered at Mt. Carmel Elementary School, White Plains. After returning to South Carolina, she joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton, where she was a member of the Missionary Board. She was a lifelong member of the NAACP, a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Sumter, and a member of the Clarendon County branch of the National Council of Negro Women. She also served as a volunteer at Bates Middle School and was co-owner of Perry’s Dollar Tree and Perry’s Fashions.

Survivors include two sons, Bennie Lee Perry Jr. and Brent Perry of the home; a daughter, Bridget L. Perry of the home; four brothers, Roderick Walker of Summerton, L.C. Nelson and John Nelson of Long Island, N.Y., and Henry L. Briggs of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two sisters, Pearly Rose Johnson of Summerton and Sarah E. Washington of Yemassee.

Services were 4 p.m. Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Henry Mitchell, John Washington , Naomi Georgia and Mason Mitchell assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Members of the Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1968 served as pallbearers and flower bearers.

William C. Babcock
William Claire Babcock, 84, widower of Gertrude DeRaad Babcock, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home in Turbeville.

Born August 6, 1916, in Sioux City, Iowa, he was the son of the late Charles and Zelma Babcock. He was a retired Aircraft Electrical Final Inspector, a longstanding member of the NRA, a coin and stamp collector for many years, served in the CCC and was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Thompson of Turbeville and Beverly Dale of Corona, Calif.; a brother, Victor Babcock of Sioux City; a sister, Nadine Camden of Sioux City; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held in California.

Bertie B. Baggette
Bertie Beulah Bryant Baggette, 75, widow of Furman I. Baggette Sr., died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at her daughter’s home in Florence.

Born Nov. 20, 1925, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Jared W. and Charity Elizabeth Ridgeway Bryant. She was a retired merchant and a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Ballard Baggette of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Harold “Michele” Weber and Myrna Baggette of Florence; a sister, Nellie Bryant of Manning; and four grandchildren, Scott Weber, Furman Baggette III, Jared Baggette and Julie Baggette.

She was preceded in death by a son, Furman “Bubbie” Baggette Jr.; a daughter, Marylin Baggette White; a brother, Woodrow Bryant; and two sisters, Olymphia and Blanche Bryant.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Brewer, Kenneth Upright and Butch Baggette officiating. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, Route 3, Box 1236, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Paul Ballard
Paul “Buster” Ballard, 66, widower of Minnie Lowery Ballard, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System.

Born Dec. 6, 1934, in Manning, he was the son of the late Paul Ballard Sr. and Mary McDonald Ballard. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Trinity AME Church. He was employed for 25 years as a stagehand with the Metropolitan Opera in New York as well as Radio City Music Hall. He served in the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Europe, and received an honorable discharge. Prior to moving to New York, he was employed by Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

Survivors include a stepson, Barry Nelson of Congers, N.Y.; three daughters, Debra Chatman of Alcolu, Paula Green of Sumter and Louise Marie Ballard of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother, Matthew Ballard of Dallas, Texas ; a sister, Betty Brunson of Manning; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday at Trinity AME Church in Manning with the Revs. J.A. Frederick, Dr. Leon Winn, Pastor T.L. Penny and Henry Mitchell officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Eddie L. Isaac
Eddie Lee Isaac, 56, husband of Harriett Isaac, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Julia I. McFadden and the late William W. McFadden Sr. He attended Clarendon County public schools and in his youth, joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three sons, Eddie McFadden, Tyrone McFadden and Willie McFadden of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Patricia Sanburn, Stephanie Ballard and Theresa Johnson of Sumter; a brother, William McFadden Jr. of Jordan; two sisters, Emma Lyons and Francis Dinkins of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren he raised as his own, Quinyetta and Jerollis Fleming; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael McFadden.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc., with the Rev. Stanley Hayes officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Elise G. Robinson
Elise Mae Green Robinson, 65, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Holy Cross Hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1935, in Manning, she was the daughter of King H. Green Sr. and the late Wilhelmenia Davis Green English, and stepdaughter of the late Herman English. She attended Manning Training School and in her youth, joined Ebenezer Baptist Church. After moving to Greensboro, N.C., she joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and then after moving to Washington , D.C., joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she served until her health failed.

Survivors include a son, Donald Edwards of Washington , D.C.; a daughter, Vivian Green Jones of Silver Spring; a brother, King H. Green Jr. of Forestville, Md.; two sisters, Lillian Ratliff of Silver Spring and Leatha McMillian of Washington , D.C.; a grandson she raised as her own, Jeffrey Green of Washington , D.C.; and a granddaughter, Deidre W. Moses of Silver Spring.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Diane.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cokley Richburg officiating.

Burial followed in Hilton Cemetery.

Willie T. Smith
Willie Taft Smith, 90, widower of Elease “Dolly” Smith, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 2, 1910, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Joe and Mary Smith. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. He worked as a mason.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Willie J. Marion; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Marion and Elizabeth Marion; and a number of grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. William T. Johnson officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Susan E. Nelson
Susan E. “Coot” Nelson, 92, widow of Solomon “Blood” Nelson, died Saturday, November 24, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 2, 1909, in Rimini, she was the daughter of the late Ben King Nelson and Nancy McKnight Nelson. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she attended Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church. After marriage, she was an active and faithful member until her health failed. She served in the Ministerial Wives Alliance Club, Prayer Service Committee, Probationer Class Leader, Missionary Society and was a member of the Stewardess Board for more than 40 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Fannie Nelson Rhames of Wilmington, N.C.; two foster sons, Gary Robinson of Thomasville, N.C., and Bernard Taylor Sr. and his wife, Ann, of Greeleyville; three foster daughters, Bertha Frederick and her husband, Eddie, of Bridgeport, Conn., Betty Nelson and her husband, Alvin, and Sheila Dukes of Stamford, Conn.; a brother, Ben Nelson of Wilmington; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Samuel Rhames; and four sisters, Carrie N. Brock, Sarah Nelson, Julia N. Richardson and Azalee Mitchell.

Services were 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Antioch United Methodist Episcopal Church with the Revs. Jonathan Smith and A.O. Carmichael, pastors, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
