James Edwards Jr.

CHERAW — James Owens (Buddy) Edwards, Jr., 83, died Dec. 5, 2004 at Sandpiper Convalescent Home in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Having lived the last six years at Sandpiper Retirement Village with his wife, Helen, he previously made his home in Cheraw, S.C. for more than 50 years.

Mr. Edwards was born in Sumter, S.C., a son of the late James Owen Edwards, Sr. and Alice Mae Thomas Edwards. He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Force during World War II and spent 42 months of service in The Pacific campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was the retired owner and operator of Edwards Sales Company, Inc. in Cheraw, S.C. as well as an active member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Harris Sunday School Class, a Lifetime Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a Lifetime Member of Cheraw Country Club.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Helen Carraway Edwards, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a son, James O. Edwards, III, and his wife, Barbara T. Edwards, of N. Augusta, S.C.; a son, Michael C. Edwards, and his wife, Kathy H. Edwards, of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Jayne E. Harry, and her husband,, Stephen J. Harry, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, T. Leslie Edwards, and wife, Jean, of Lugoff, S.C.; and a sister, Eleanor E. Mann of Gay, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held for Mr. Edwards on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church with interment in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends before the service from 1-2 pm in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 129 Cheraw, SC 29520 or Odyssey Healthcare of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave North Charleston, SC 29407.

Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw is serving the family of Mr. Edwards.

Jack Purvis

EFFINGHAM — Jack Dempsey Purvis, 75, died Sunday, December 5, 2004.

Mr. Purvis was born March 22, 1929, in Florence, SC, a son of the late Jessie Keith Purvis and Ruby Hicks Purvis. He was retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission in the Field Service Division. He was a member of the Effingham Presbyterian Church.

In his time with us, Mr. Purvis enjoyed his retired life with his many friends fishing in Georgetown, SC. He volunteered time with his boat to the Sheriff Department’s Camp Pee Dee Pride. He was blessed with so many friends who loved him dearly.

Surviving Mr. Purvis are his wife, Mary Strickland Purvis of 55 years, two sons, Don (Pat) Purvis and Mike (Kitty) Purvis, and two daughters, Vicky (Steve) Turner and Mary Anne (Barry) Elvis. Surviving grandchildren are Shannon (Franklin), Kimberly, Sonya (Ben), Jessica, Brad, Stacy, Brandon, and Justin, and two great-grandchildren, Conner and Cages.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., December 7, 2004, at Effingham Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery.

Walters-Powell Funeral Home will be assisting the family with family visitation on Monday, December 6, 2004, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Hospice of the Pee Dee or Effingham Presbyterian Church.

James Anderson

HARTSVILLE — Services for James “Jimmy” Anderson are 1 p.m. today at Jerusalem Baptist Church with burial in Florence National Cemetery. Hines Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Darlington Co. to Sam and Mary Smith Anderson, he died Nov. 29, 2004. Surviving are wife, Virginia Woodard Anderson; mother; children, Samuel, Noland, Marcell Anderson, Sherry Johnson, Lisa Anderson; one sister; others.

Jimmie Collier

WEST COLUMBIA — Jimmie Jay Collier, 74, of West Columbia, died Saturday, December 4, 2004. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at 1pm in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, conducted by Reverend Richard Lyttleton. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens in West Columbia.

Mr. Collier was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the son of the late Marshall Jay and Juanita James Collier. He was a member of Westside First Church of God. Mr. Collier was a retired superintendent of both residential and commercial construction.Surviving are his beloved wife of 55 years, Gladys “Dee” Collier; sons, Jay Collier of Ridgeway, Jimmy Collier and his wife Chris of Fort Mill, Joe Collier and his wife Cynthia of Lexington; daughters, Janie Banks and her husband Ralph of Mt. Pleasant, Janet Swayne and her husband Tom of Mt. Pleasant; brothers, Joseph Collier and his wife Betty of Columbia, Charles “Chuck” Collier and his wife Joann of Lexington; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Jones and her husband Eldon of Evansville, IN, Geneva “Skippy” Sountris and her husband John of West Columbia; ten grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Mr. Collier was predeceased by a daughter, Julie Denise Collier.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home, 200 State Street, West Columbia.

Jessie Dantzler

ORANGEBURG — Services for Jessie B. Dantzler will be held at 3 p.m. (viewing 2 p.m.) Tuesday at Edisto Fork UMC with burial in Dantzler Cemetery. Visitation 11 a.m.-9 tonight at Simmons Funeral Home. Born in Orangeburg Co. to Julius Sr. and Rosa Miley Bonnett, she died Dec. 2, 2004. Surviving are daughter, Rowena Dantzler; sister, Lucile Harrison; nieces, Gelane Dantzler, Sharon Briggman.

Rev. Marion Durant Jr.

NORTH — Services for Rev. Marion Durant Jr., 67, will be held at 2:30 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Tuesday at St. Mark UMC with burial in Maloney Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 3-9 tonight at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home. Born to Marion Durant Sr. and Emma Livingston Black, he died Dec. 2, 2004. Surviving are children, Anthony, Cynthia, Timothy Durant; four sisters; six brothers; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Shirley Crockett

GREENWOOD — Services for Shirley MacKay Crockett, 83, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Blyth Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Pittsburgh to Dr. William and Florence Gompers MacKay, she died Dec. 4, 2004. Surviving are husband, Joseph Crockett; children, Joseph Crockett Jr., Judith Simon, Janet Crockett, Jennifer Weaver; five grandchildren.

Nancy Duckett

UNION — Services with burial for Nancy Wylie Duckett, 59, are 3 p.m. (viewing 2 p.m.) Tuesday at Fairview Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Born in Gaffney to Gene and Gladys Wiley, she died Dec. 5, 2004. Surviving: spouse, Halon Duckett; parents; children, June Davis, Julie Horne, Danny, Richard Duckett; siblings, Linda Blanton, Tom Boyle; seven grandchildren; one great-grand.

Nelson Fowler Sr.

UNION — Services for Nelson Eddy Fowler Sr., 57, a U.S. Army veteran, are 11 a.m. Tuesday (visitation 7-8:30 tonight) at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home with burial in Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Union to Leroy and Sudie Montgomery Fowler, he died Nov. 29, 2004. Surviving are wife, Windy Webb Fowler; sons, Nelson Jr., Monte Fowler; sisters, Gail Guinn, Gaye Broome; four grandchildren.

Charlie Hancock Sr.

Mt. CROGHAN — Services with burial for Charlie F. Hancock Sr., 64, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cross Roads Baptist Church. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield. Born in Mt. Croghan to Wade and Eller Cornelia Allen Hancock, he died Dec. 4, 2004. Surviving are wife, Lucy Williams Hancock; children, Charlie Hancock Jr., Gail Morton, Dale Tarlton; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers.

Thomas Haynes Jr.

ALLENDALE — Services with burial for Thomas Haynes Jr., 71, widower of Willie Florence Haynes, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Love Christian Church, Fairfax. Cave Funeral Service is in charge. Born to Thomas Sr. and Adrene Haynes, he died Dec. 1, 2004. Surviving are children, Crystal Monda, Shirley, Valenica, Romona Lee, Shawn, Stacey, Kelvin, Raymond Haynes; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

James Hart

COLUMBIA — Services with burial for James Hart, 52, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bushy Pond Baptist Church, Norway. Visitation is 3-8 tonight at Jackson’s Memorial Chapel. Born in Norway to Moses Dyce and Retha Hart, he died December 2, 2004. Surviving are daughters, Kimyette Ware, Kameka Hagood; sisters, Sherry James, Reatha Scott; brother, Sonny Hart; three grandchildren.

James Howell

UNION — Services for James Earl Howell, 84, are 3 p.m. (viewing 2 p.m.) Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church with burial in Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Born in Kelton to Willie and Bridgie McCullough Howell, he died Dec. 4, 2004. Surviving: wife, Nanalene Fowler Howell; son, Jerry Howell; two sisters; eight brothers; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Gene Ogle

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Services for Vertus Eugene “Gene” Ogle, 78, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (visitation 5-7 tonight) at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home, Hartsville, S.C., with burial in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Hilderbrand to Vernon and Katie Young Ogle, he died December 5, 2004. He had a great sense of humor. Surviving are wife, Lessie Howle Ogle; daughters, Pamela, Holly Ogle.

Silas Saulters

COLUMBIA — Services with burial for Silas Saulters, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ecclesia Church of God in Christ. Leevy's Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. He died December 4, 2004. Surviving are son, Robert Saulters; three great-grandchildren.
