Maggie I. Ragin
Maggie Isaac Ragin, 86, died Sunday, November 25, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late George and Luetina Nelson Isaac. She was the widow of Charlie Ragin. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and friend and joined Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. There, she served as a member of the Stewardess Board, the Sunday school and the Willing Workers Club. Times were hard and money was scarce, so she moved to New York to seek a better life. While there, she was affiliated with Emanuel AME Church, where she served in various capacities. Later in life, she moved back home to Summerton and rejoined Liberty Hill AME Church. She reclaimed her status with the Stewardess Board, the Willing Workers Club and Sunday school and became a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She served her church until her health failed. In 1995, she became a member of the 80 Plus Club and in 1998, Historic Liberty Hill AME Church honored her as “Mother of the Year.”

Survivors include three sons, George W. Ragin and Rufus Ragin of Sumter and James Ragin of New York, N.Y.; two daughters, Rutha Holley of Sumter and Luetina Ragin of Summerton; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Arlen O. Atkinson
Arlen O’Neal Atkinson, 82, wife of Donnie H. Atkinson Sr., died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at her home, after an illness.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Richardson Floyd and Nellie Iro Pigate. She was a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church, where she served as organist/pianist for more than 40 years as well as serving in various other positions faithfully for a number of years. She was a retired dry-goods store-owner and a homemaker.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include two sons, Donnie Atkinson Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Cades and Tommy Atkinson and his wife, Faye, of Sumter; two daughters, Sandra McElveen and her husband, Jerry, of New Zion and Carol Parker and her husband, Freddie, of Turbeville; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Carlyle Floyd; and a sister, Sybil F. Hall.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Turbeville.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville First Baptist Church Cemetery or Building Fund.

Edward B. Baskin
BISHOPVILLE - Edward Briggs Baskin, 86, husband of Kathleen Lazar Baskin, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, at his home.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late John Sewanee Baskin and Mary Richardson Briggs Baskin. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Bishopville High School and Clemson University class of 1937. After graduating from Clemson, he served as a county agricultural agent in Williamsburg, Florence and Calhoun counties. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1941 to 1945, until his discharge as a lieutenant colonel. He then returned home to run the family dairy farm in Bishopville and was a successful dairy farmer and businessman until his retirement in 1990. He served and held many offices with the Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation Service and National Independent Dairy Association. He also served on the ASCS State Committee and was a delegate to the National Cotton Council. He served as president of the S.C. Jersey Cattle Club and retired as a lifetime director and served as director and manager of Sumter Dairies. He also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, Edward B. “Nick” Baskin Jr. of Lugoff; four daughters, Kathleen D. Towers of Ormond Beach, Fla., Kathleen B. Brungard of Charlotte, N.C., and Jacquelyn B. Odell and Maria B. Clayton of Springfield, Va.; a sister, Norvelle Baskin Cathcart of Camden; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery with the Revs. Kenneth Phelps, Julian Lazar and Ed Davidson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery Fund.

Jerry N. Byrd
Jerry Neil Byrd, 64, husband of Ula B. Hornikel, died Monday, December 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 20, 1937, in Wilmington, N.C., he was the son of the late John B. and Nita Suggs Byrd. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and was a retired Captain and Engineer with Coastal Corporation. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include three daughters, Tamara Cummins and Samara Cummins of Atlanta, Ga., and Ula Long of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Frances Potter of Leland, N.C., and Alice Caroll of Wilmington; and six grandchildren, Blake Ribbey, John Long, James Martin, Robert Martin, Jake Hook and Dawn Long.

Services were 6 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Summerton Police Department.

Thomas Marion Davis
Thomas Marion Davis, M.D., FACS, 82, died Monday, December 10, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 6, 1919, in Branchville, S.C., he was the son of the late George Bellinger Davis, Sr., and Louise McAlhany Davis. He was a graduate of University High School, University of South Carolina and the Medical College of South Carolina. He was a member of Blue Key and KSK honor fraternities at USC from 1941-1943. He interned at Columbia Hospital of Richland County. He served as Battalion Surgeon of infantry, Hdq. Co., 1st Bn, 1st Reg., First Division, Fleet Marines; joined the First Division at Banika and Pavuvu in the Russell Islands, South Pacific; engaged in combat in Okinawa for 84 days in 1945; served in Tensin, China in Army of Occupation and as Executive Officer of First Marine Division Hospital; returned to the United States in 1946. He married Adele Davis in Christ Episcopal Church, Savannah, Ga., on August 31, 1946. He served his surgical residence at Roper Hospital in Charleston until 1947; then surgical residence at Columbia Hospital until 1949; then one and a half years of surgical preceptorship under Dr. George T. McCutchen in Columbia, moved to Manning in 1950, and practiced surgery at Clarendon Memorial Hospital as Chief of Surgery for 40 years, and was former Chief of Staff of Clarendon Memorial Hospital, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of Clarendon Memorial Hospital for 30 years.

He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Sumter, Clarendon, Lee Medical Society, South Carolina Medical Society, American Medical Society, and was executive secretary of the 7th Medical District. He was a member of the Southeastern Surgical Congress, a member of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and S.C. Chapter of American College of Surgeons. Davis was a member and past president of the Manning Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Col. Mathew Singleton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the South Carolina Huguenot Society, and the Family of Bruce Scot Society. He was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton since 1950, a member of the Vestry, past Junior Warden and past Senior Warden.

He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Christian Academy of Manning and Laurence Manning Academy, a member of the USC Association of Lettermen and St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge in Manning.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Adele Davis of Manning; three daughters, Marie Davis Buyck of St. Matthews and Harriet Davis Rawlinson and Caroline Davis Herring of Manning; a son, Thomas Marion “Bubba” Davis Jr. of Manning; two brothers, George Bellinger Davis Jr. of Lexington and Dr. William McAlhany Davis of Spartanburg; a sister, Margaret Davis Rogers of Columbia; and seven grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthias Episcopal Church. The Rev. David Thurlow officiated. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Algernon Gibson Solomons Jr., William Knox Brookes, Albert Louis Davis, Dr. William Herbert Davis, Robert Louis Davis, Edward Davis, Gary Anthony Davis, George Bellinger Davis III, Dr. William Edwin Rogers Jr., David Rogers and Dr. William Kirkland Davis. Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Cothran, James Rawlinson, Joe P. Moore, John G. Dinkins Jr., Leroy Phillips, Thomas Brewer, Henry B. Rickenbaker Sr., the Honorable S.H. Belser, Fred Young, Edward Frye, Dr. C.E. Coker, Dr. William Aldrich, Dr. Ray Dominici, Dr. Ed Keith, Dr. Robert Eagerton, Dr. Robert L. Ridgeway, Dr. Henry P. Bozard, Dr. William M. Bryan, Dr. Tucker Weston and Dr. Stan Juk.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Memorial Hospital, St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton or York Place Episcopal Home for Children.

Lucille B. Jones
Lucille B. Jones, 85, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1916, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Judge Green and Hattie B. Green. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Mulberry Baptist Church and later attended Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville. She then joined Pentecostal Uprising Holiness Church in Sumter, where she attended faithfully until her health failed.

Survivors include a brother, Julius Green of Sumter; six sisters, Elise Wilson, Annie Harvin, Elnatha Kingwood and Elease Reynolds of Sumter, Inez Cureton of Buffalo, N.Y., and Ruby Singleton of Norwalk, Conn.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating and Evangelist Delia Colclough assisting.

Burial followed in Walker Cemetery.

Shykeem P. Spann
Baby Boy Shykeem Pressley Spann died Friday, November 30, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 8, 2001, in Columbia, he was the son of Audrea Way and Marcus Spann.

Survivors besides his parents include his grandparents, Rhonda F. Way and Mary L. Jones of Sumter, Mary and Jimmie Wilder of Pinewood, Jacob Heyward of Manning and Curtis Johnson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; great-grandparents, W.B. and Thelma D. Way of Sumter; and a number of aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by Everlyn (Jeremiah) Heyward.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating.

Morris J. Brailsford
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Morris J. Brailsford, 56, husband of Della Ashby Brailsford, died Friday, December 7, 2001, at Brooklyn Hospital in Brooklyn.

Born July 30, 1945, in Summerton, he was the son of the late William and Inez James Brailsford.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Morris J. Brailsford Jr. and Darnell Brailsford of Brooklyn, and Bobby Lawson of Manhattan, N.Y.; a daughter, Marcella Brailsford-Abney of Brooklyn; and four sisters, Sarah Barbara of Brooklyn, and Mazie James, Belphine James and Catherine Blanding of Summerton.

Services were noon Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Heydan Hill Cemetery in Eutawville.

Lawrence Burgess
Lawrence “Dan” Burgess, 76, widower of Hattie Jane Rhodes Burgess, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at his home.

Born June 1, 1925, in the Gable community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Alexander Burgess and Lizzie McFadden Burgess. He attended Melina Parochial School and in his youth, joined Melina Presbyterian Church. He was retired from Georgia-Pacific Inc. in Alcolu. He was also owner and operator of Smokey’s Place of Alcolu.

Survivors include five sons, Isaac Rhodes of Orangeburg, Jonathan “Smokey” Burgess of Manning and Lawrence Burgess Jr., Carl Williams and Robert Williams of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Delcenia Burgess of Bronx, N.Y., and Ellen Billups and Teresa Pearson of Manning; a brother, Muldrow Burgess of Alcolu; four sisters, Ethel Byrd and Alford B. Lemon of Sumter, Dorothy Yoes of Baltimore and Eunice Scarborough of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 24 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA) in Sardinia with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. James S. Hudley assisting.

Burial followed in Green Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Reginald S. Ridgeway
Reginald I. “Redna” Stone Ridgeway, 86, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1915, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Hezekiah Jacob Myers and Laura Geddings Myers Porter. She was first married to the late Elwood Huggins Stone and then to the late Henry Walter Ridgeway. She attended Wilson Union United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Elwood H. Stone Jr. of Surfside Beach, and R. Durham Stone and Glenn David Stone of Manning; two sisters, Christine Meier of Charleston and Marie Addison of Summerton; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of stepchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with Dr. Michael Haun officiating.

Burial followed in Home Branch Church Cemetery.
