Danny A. Wooten
Danny Arnold Wooten, 35, died Saturday, September 22, 2001, in Summerton.

Born Nov. 22, 1965, in Farmville, N.C., he was the son of Chester Ray Wooten of Greenville and Carol Anderson Nylander of Summerton. He was a carpet installer.

Survivors besides his father and mother include his stepfather, Bob Nylander of Summerton; a brother, Tony Ray Wooten of Farmville; and a sister, Kimberly Lynn Scucchi of Lake Village, Ark.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Norman Blanding
Norman Blanding, 46, husband of Shirley Ann Hicks Blanding, died Sunday, September 30, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born April 8, 1955, in Cypress Fork, he was the son of Evangelist May Moses Blanding and the late Harvey Blanding Sr. He was a 1975 graduate of Manning High School. In his youth, he joined Cypress Fork AME Church, where he served on the usher board and trustee board. He was a former employee of Santee Carrier Trucking of Holly Hill. He was self-employed with Standard Corp. of Charleston.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and his mother of Alcolu include eight brothers, Harvey Blanding and Isaiah Blanding, of Willingboro, N.J., Leroy Blanding of Miami, Fla., Timothy Blanding of Alcolu, Jerry Blanding of Manning, Harmon Blanding and Ronald Blanding of Sarasota, Fla. and Donald Blanding of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three sisters, Emma Hilton of Manning, Gloria Coward of Yeadon, Pa., and Estelle Rush of Newark, N.J.

He was preceded in death by a twin sister, Naomi Blanding.

Services were Saturday at Cypress Fork AME Church with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, officiating along with Brother Halbert Tucker, Brother Sam Serman Offord, the Rev. Franklin McCants, Dr. George Hicks and the Rev. Jerome McCray assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Julius Ceasar
Julius Ceasar, 74, husband of Jane M. Ceasar, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001, at Windsor Manor Inc. He was born May 17, 1927, in Sumter County.

He retired from Campbell’s Soup in Sumter and was a member of Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu, where he was chairman of the Deacon Board. He was a member of Red Hill Lodge #144. He was a Korean War veteran.

Survivors besides his wife include four daughters, Mary L. Lofton of Paterson, N.J., Julia A. Ceasar, District Heights, Md., Madgelene Ceasar of the home and Celia M. Herbert of Florence; four brothers, the Rev. Gussie Ceasar of Sumter, and Willie Ceasar, Hampton Ceasar and the Rev. Jimmie Ceasar of Gable; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Green Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. James S. Hudley, Gussie Ceasar, Vandroth Backus and W.J. Frierson officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Robert Hardy Sr.
Robert Errol Hardy Sr., 61, husband of Jackie Kahrs Hardy, died Sunday, September 30, 2001.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Hugh Dilworth and Margaret Coker Hardy. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he was involved in Lutheran Men and Via de Cristo. He was also a member of Pine Island Club, past president of the Dentsville Youth Baseball League and past president of Spring Valley High School Booster Club. He served eight years in the S.C. Army National Guard as a first lieutenant. He retired from South Carolina Electric and Gas as Manager of Distribution Operations for Columbia and was formerly employed as Director of Utilities for the City of Camden.

Survivors besides his wife include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. “Robbie” Hardy Jr. and Lea H. Hardy of Columbia; a daughter, Robin Lynn Hardy of Columbia; three sisters, Ruby H. Coker of Turbeville, Sybil H. Floyd of New Zion and Mary H. Thomas of Sumter; and 37 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Services were Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Dr. Harry T. Harvin
Dr. Harry T. Harvin, 85, husband of 54 years to the late Charlotte Hines “Toby” Harvin, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 22, 1916, in Manning, he was the son of the late Stewart Ingram and Leila Burgess Harvin. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder emeritus, superintendent of Christian Education, former clerk of the session and moderator of the New Harmony Presbytery. He attended Manning public schools and was a graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, where he served as president of the student body, president of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and a member of the baseball team. He was a graduate of Emory University Dental School in Atlanta, Ga. He practiced dentistry in Sumter for 56 years. He was a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander and served in World War II. He was past president of the S.C. Dental Association and was a member of the board of directors of Sunset Country Club. He was former president of the Sumter Rotary Club and a member of the Shaw-Sumter Community Council and American Legion Post No. 15.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Harry Thornton Harvin Jr. of Kennesaw, Ga., Cameron Thompson Harvin of Sumter and Steven LeGrande Harvin of Columbia; four daughters-in-law, Suzanne Brooks Harvin of Kennesaw, Lynn Riddick Harvin of Columbia and Maryanne Earls Harvin and Katherine Hopkins Harvin of Sumter; a sister, Ceceila Harvin Eadon of Manning; a brother, William Burgess Harvin of Manning; six grandsons, Harry Thornton Harvin III of Arlington, Va., Glenn Whitfield Harvin of Clemson, Steven LeGrande Harvin Jr. of Columbia, Cameron Thompson Harvin Jr., Andre Earls Harvin and Peter Martin Harvin of Sumter; four granddaughters, Laura Suzanne Harvin of Atlanta, Charlotte Rebecca Harvin of Sumter and Catherine Kelly Harvin and Clara Hines Harvin of Columbia; and a granddaughter-in-law, Michelle Clem Harvin of Arlington.

He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Hines Harvin; two brothers, Stewart Ingram Harvin Jr. and Charles Richard Harvin; and a sister, Leila Olive Harvin.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Dr. Edward McLeod and Nick Yoda officiating. Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Presbyterian College.

Scriven A. Hutson
Scriven Abbott Hutson, 69, husband of Maggie Dawkins Hutson, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 30, 1932, in Oswego, he was the son of the late William Krell Hutson and Erlene Mathis Hutson. He was retired from the City of Sumter and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three sons, S.A. Hutson of St. Albans, W.Va., and Danny and Donny Hutson of Manning; four daughters, Sandra Lambert and Cindy Ward of Georgetown, Sheryl Tisdale of Paxville and Patsy Cantlon of Sumter; five brothers, Raymond, Henry and John Hutson of Sumter, Dreyfus Hutson of Oswego and Willie Hutson of Columbia; three sisters, Marilyn Weathersbee of Sumter, Patricia Riddle of Oswego and Shirley Ellison of Dalzell; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Thursday in Paxville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Gene Mosier and Phares E. “Pec” Chatham III officiating.

Memorials may be made to Paxville Baptist Church.

John E. Lynch Jr.
John Earl Lynch Jr., 65, died Friday, October 5, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after an illness.

Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late John Earl and Eunice McGee Lynch. He was a retired plumber and served in the Army during the Korean conflict.

Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Kirby of Lake City, Earline Jordon of Sumter and Eunice Marie Razor of Summerville; a son, Patrick Michael Lynch Sr. of Manning; three brothers, Lee R. Lynch Sr. of Manning, John L. Lynch Sr. of Moncks Corner and James B. Lynch of Summerville; a sister, Pat Kelly of Sumter; several grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joyce Carter of Manning.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Brockington Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Camp Branch Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Louise G. Scarborough
Louise Gardner Scarborough, 92, of Charleston, widow of Arthur W. Scarborough, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at her home.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late William O’Donnell Gardner and Letitia Graham Gardner. She was valedictorian of both her high school class and her nursing school graduating class. She was a retired registered nurse. She was directress of the Alter Guild for 25 years at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and the first female at Good Shepherd.

Survivors include a son, A. Wilson Scarborough of Charleston; a daughter, Caroline Prause of Charleston; a sister, Laura G. Jackson of Manning; three grandsons; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Services were 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Burial followed in the Church of Ascension churchyard in Hagood.

Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hospice of Charleston or the Church of Ascension.

John M. Hipp Sr.
John Murray Hipp Sr., 44, died Friday, October 12, 2001, at his home in Manning.

Born July 20, 1957, in Manning, he was the son of Edith Newman Hipp of Manning and the late Wilbur Bryan Hipp Sr. He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, John Murray Hipp Jr. of Manning and Donald Hipp of Cleveland, Tenn.; three brothers, Bryan and Jimmy Hipp of Manning and Paul Hipp of Cordova; and three grandchildren, Quinn Hipp, Dakota Hipp and Summer Hipp.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home with Dr. Paul Sullivan and the Rev. Sim Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Clarendon County Animal Shelter.

Rosa D. Hopkins
Rosa Davis Hopkins, 100, widow of Henry Davis and Purdy Hopkins, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, at Mariner Health.

Born July 2, 1901, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lon Brown. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Pinewood, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Job Lodge No. 109. She worked in the Sumter County school system as a cook.

Survivors include four grandsons, Curtis Smith, Kenneth Davis, Ormond Lewis Jr. and William Smith Jr.; three granddaughters, Mary Gumbs, Bertha Godley and Vivan Afuwah; seven stepsons, Harry Hopkins, Ernest Hopkins, Willie Lee Hopkins, Alvertus Hopkins, Rudolph Hopkins, Willie Hopkins and Purdy Hopkins Jr.; five stepdaughters, Loretta Hopkins, Lillian Jones, Mary Lee Harkless, Ruth Ann Hopkins and Irene Robinson; 72 grandchildren; 105 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Smith and Annie Belle Lewis; and three stepsons, Joe Lewis, Jon Edward and Craig Hopkins.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Timmons, pastor, officiating and the Revs. J.W. Walker and Roosevelt Boyd assisting.

Burial followed in new Hope AME Cemetery.

Richard F. "R.F." Jenkinson
Richard F. “R. F.” Jenkinson, 88, husband of Mollie Sullivan Jenkinson, died Friday, October 12, 2001, at a local nursing center.

Born in Pinewood, he was the son of the late Marvin L. Jenkinson Sr. and Eleanor Chapman Jenkinson. He was a member of Pinewood United Methodist Church and was a retired farmer.

Survivors besides his wife of Pinewood include a son, Richard F. Jenkinson Jr. of Pinewood; three daughters, Hazel Jenkinson of Asheville, N.C., Margaret Jenkinson of Pinewood and Ann J. Melloh of Lebanon, Missouri; three sisters, Margie J. Kneece of Chapin and Dorothy J. O’Cain of White Rock and Lois J. Wamer of St. George; four grandchildren, First Lt. Eric Melloh, Bonnie Melloh, April Jenkinson and Preston Jenkinson; and one great-grandchild, Britnee.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin L. Jenkinson Jr. and two sisters, Katie J. Croft and Mamie J. Anderson.

Pallbearers were Dickie Jones, Billy Brewer, Eddie DuRant, Ray Lester, Leslie McIntosh and Buddy Lester.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Monday at Pinewood United Methodist Church with the Revs. Richard Broomall, pastor, and Bennie Barwick officiating.

Burial followed in Andrews Chapel cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Pinewood United Methodist Church Building Fund or Andrews Chapel Cemetery.
