Margaret L. Clark
Margaret Louise Clark, 85, widow of Matthew David Clark, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at her residence in Manning.

Born Oct. 3, 1916, in Moncks Corner, she was the daughter of the late John and Henrietta Dangerfield Clark. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Marion E. Clark of Sumter, Harry L. Clark of Fountain, Fla., Heyward Clark of Manning, Leon Clark of Holly Hill and Matthew Clark of Moncks Corner; a daughter, Frances Feaster of Moncks Corner; a sister, Penny Blackwood of Moncks Corner; 17 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Clark.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Revs. Stephen Bowe and Thomas Richburg officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter.

Her grandsons, John Clark, Alan Clark, Brent Sitton, Jo Jo Clark, Ricky Lee and Timothy Lee, served as pallbearers. Richard Borges served as the honorary pallbearer.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Mertie H. Floyd
Mertie Adelaide Hatfield Floyd, 75, wife of Carlton Durant Floyd, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1926, in Kingstree, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin Hatfield Sr. and E. D. DuBose Hatfield. She was first married to the late W. Otis Morris. Mrs. Floyd was a retired seamstress and a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, John Edward Morris of Sumter; six daughters, Debra Therrell and Ann M. Heath of Manning, Sandra Morris and Ruth Barkley of Sumter, Gayle Nobles of Effingham, and France Coleman of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Frank Hatfield of Manning; two sisters, Mary Miller and Maggie Way of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Mike Murdoch and Bobby Driggers officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Wendell Morris, Earl Coker, Andrew Therrell, Eric Morris, Dell Morris and Monroe Floyd.

Julian Hardee
Julian “Mitch” Hardee, 76, widower of Imogene Stuckey Hardee, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Life Care Center of Columbia.

Born June 27, 1925, in Kingstree, he was the son of the late John Otto Hardee and Bessie Player Hardee. He was a retired certified life insurance underwriter, attended the University of South Carolina, was a WWII Army veteran and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church of Greeleyville.

Survivors include a son, Mark Hardee of Columbia; a daughter, Genie Hardee of Asheville, N.C.; three sisters, Donna Pratt of Florence, Mary Moreland of Aiken and Reah Carmichael of Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, John Hardee of Hollywood, S.C., and Fred Hardee of Asheville, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Julie Hardee and Becky Hardee.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Poston officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Margie F. Dickens
Margie “Ree” Felder Dickens, 44, wife of Milton Dickens, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at her home.

Born April 2, 1957, in the St. Paul community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Mary Lue Brown Felder and the late Willie T. Felder Sr. She was a 1976 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She attended Mt. Pleasant UME Church. She was employed by Jerry’s Travel Center for a number of years.

Survivors besides her husband and her mother include four brothers, Allen Felder of Manning, Willie T. Felder and Leon Felder of Summerton and James Felder of Fairfax; four sisters, Lila Felder of Newark, N.J., Ellenora Mohammod of Philadelphia, Pa. and Essie Oliver and Lakiesha D. Felder of Summerton; a grandfather, Richard Brown of Summerton; and a grandmother, Minnie Felder of Summerton.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant UME Church with the Rev. James O. Robinson officiating, along with the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd and Jonathan Smith assisting.

Burial followed in Summerton Funeral Service Cemetery.

Members of the Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1976 served as pallbearers.

Members of the Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1976 and her co-workers from Jerry’s Travel Center served as flower bearers.

Ella J. Blanding
Ella Jane Blanding, 88, widow of Lee Blanding, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 19, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Allen Sweat and Ella Epps Sweat. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a devoted member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church and the Manning branch of the NAACP.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Blanding of Fayetteville, N.C., and Larry Blanding and Alvin Blanding of Manning; four daughters, Carrie Billups of Bridgeport, Conn., Mamie Scott of Washington , D.C., Pearline Robinson and Ella Shiggs of Manning; a brother, Calvin Sweat of Sumter; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville with the Rev. Henry Presley officiating, along with the Revs. Lincoln Blanding, Terry Johnson, Herman Gibson and C. Richburg assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Charles E. Vanatta
Charles Eugene “Chuck” Vanatta, 70, husband of Margaret “Peg” McMahon Vanatta, died Friday, March 15, 2002, in Carolina Cedars in Florence.

Born Nov. 18, 1931, in Somerset, Ohio, he was the son of the late Thomas Emerson Vanatta and the late Grace Valorie Vanatta Young. He was retired from Southern New England Telephone Company in New Haven, Conn. Vanatta was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Lynn Tunnicliff of Decatur, Ala. and Lora Kelley of Coranado, Calif.; a brother, Clarence Edward Vanatta of Ohio; and two grandchildren, Jason Tunnicliff and Jeffrey Tunnicliff.

Services are 3:30 p.m. Friday in Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Petitt officiating.

Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are Sam Guthrie, Charlie Cramer, Ray Lamothe, Don White, Leroy Johnson and Russell Blackwell.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon County Habitat for Humanity.

Lillian R. Ranson
Apopka, Fla. - Lillian Rigby Ranson, 90, widow of the late Rev. Arthur Jones Ranson, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Orlando Regional Lucerne Hospital.

Born Jan. 30, 1912, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Charles Samuel Rigby and Lillian Harvin Rigby. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Winthrop College and was a retired school teacher. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Apopka.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur Jones Ranson III of Winter Park, Fla. and Charles Rigby Ranson of Lawrence, Kan.; two sisters, Lula Sue Mood of Chapin and Harriet Coleman of Daytona Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Presbyterian Church at Manning. Dr. William Holmes officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Thelma G. Montgomery
Thelma Pearl Graham Montgomery, 79, widow of Albert Montgomery Sr., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Jenkins and Rosa Graham and stepdaughter of the late Martha Graham. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a faithful member of Salem Baptist Church where she was a member of the senior missionary and the mother’s club. She lived and worked in New York City for more than 20 years. She was president of the Randolph Manor Association. On several occasions, she recited old stories on WSSC radio station.

Survivors include two sons, Wilbur J. Montgomery of Sumter and Willie E. Montgomery of Davis Station; four daughters, Catherine V. Logan, Daisy M. Gibson and Martha A. Washington and her husband George of Sumter and Rose A. Frazier and her husband Lennie of Eastover; an adopted daughter, Beverly Rogers of Sumter; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two adopted grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Albert Montgomery Jr.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. T.O. Everett, pastor, officiating, along with Minister Barbara Lash, the Revs. Thomas Blyther and Ralph W. Canty Sr.

Burial followed in Walker Cemetery.

Stanley Montgomery
Pompano Beach, Fla. - Stanley Montgomery, 42, husband of Yolanda Montgomery, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Pompano Beach.

Born May 16, 1959, in Manning, he was the son of Sye and Shirley Brown Montgomery. He was a graduate of Manning High School. He was employed by Seawall in Pompano Beach.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, James Brown of Manning; a daughter, Tamekia Moore of Columbia; seven brothers, Johnny Lee Brown Sr., Sye Montgomery Jr., Charles Montgomery, Bernie Montgomery and Willie Earl Montgomery of Pompano Beach, Bill Montgomery of Manning and James Montgomery of Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters, Minnie P. Johnson of Manning and Ree Brown of Wilmington.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
