Geneva C. Landreth
Geneva Mae Carter Landreth, 81, widow of Ralph Landreth, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 16, 1920, in Quelin, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Henry Carter and Velma Calvin Carter. She was retired from Albany Felt in St. Stephen. She was a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Myers and husband Quinn of Manning; a step-daughter, Peggy Woods and husband James of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Betty Carter Cumbee of Spokane, Wash. and Geraldine Carter Coonce of Hutchinson, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Mabel English of Manning; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Randolph “Randy” Landreth; a stepdaughter, Shirley Maxine Landreth; and a brother, Harlen Carter.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Grover Mixon officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville.

Pallbearers were Billy Disher, A.C. English, Todd English, Jerry Carter, Joe Henry Carter and Joe H. Carter Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Carter, L.H. Myers Jr., Hugh Myers, Ronnie Myers and Edward McCabe.

Stonewall J. Evans Sr.
Stonewall Jackson “Jack” Evans Sr., 74, widower of Marvin Gertrude Barrineau Evans, passed away Friday, March 15, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born in New Zion, he was the son of the late Sior Osteen Evans and Ruth Thigpen Evans.

He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Camden and was retired from Standard Products of Winnsboro, S.C. He was a Master Mason and Past Master of Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364. He was a former semi-pro baseball and Little League baseball coach in Sumter. He was an accomplished country, gospel and bluegrass musician. His most outstanding accomplishment in life was being the best father and friend that any child could ever have.

Survivors include a son, S.J. “Jack” Evans Jr. of Lugoff; two daughters, Sharon Kaye Evans Deal of Beaufort and Sheila Marie Evans Montemayor of Phillipsburg, N.J.; a brother, Robert W. Evans of Sumter; a sister, Clarabell Evans Tedder of Sumter; five grandchildren, Angelina D. Jones, Michelle M. Jones, Meiah Montemayor, Andrew Evans and Christopher M. Evans; two great-granddaughters, Tiffne R. Jones and Autumn B. Tice; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Marvin Evans; two brothers, Paul Evans and Robert Benson Evans; a sister, Corrine Evans Pettis; and a great-grandson, James Evans Tice.

Services were 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Hudson and Billy McGugan Sr. officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Members of Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364, Lory Johnson and Laverne Miles served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, 952 Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.

Mary Sanders
Mary Sanders, 85, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 27, 1916, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Sanders and Nettie Dow Sanders. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of the Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton.

Survivors include a son, James Sanders of Forestville, Md.; a daughter, Barbara “Norine” Brown of Summerton; three grandchildren, Desmond Brown, Sabrina Smith and Quentin Brown; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi Duncan officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ruby W. Ray
Sumter - Ruby Mae Wilson Ray, 82, widow of Furman W. Ray, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 4, 1920, in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Lavan and Nannie Ervin Wilson. She was a member of Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church and an avid fisherman.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Ray of Florence and Charles E. Ray of Swiss City, Ind.; two daughters, Ruth R. Jeror and Beatrice G. Hayden of Sumter; a brother, Louis Wilson of Kershaw; a sister, Lula Anderson of Camden; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Scott Jeror and Francis E. Jeror Jr.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday in Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Trott and Phil Ange officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers and Dr. Phillip Brandt and staff served were honorary pallbearers
Memorials may be made to Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church, 999 Jefferson Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Mace Green
Mace Green, 87, widower of Dilsie Green, died Thursday, February 28, 2002.

Born Jan. 15, 1915, in Summerton, he was the son of the late January Nelson and Silian Green. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a lifelong member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in Pinewood. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include two adopted sons, Emanuel Harvin of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Durant Marion of Baltimore, Md.; four adopted daughters, Ernestine Gupton and Delores Harvin of Brooklyn, Lucinder Whittington of Cambridge. Md. and Sallie Marion of Orlando, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Viola Dingle of Manning; a sister, Alice Junious of Summerton; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, a son and an adopted son.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greater St. Phillips RMUE Church with the Rev. Warren Hatcher officiating along with the Rev. Amos Hatcher assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Annie W. Harrison
Annie Wallace Harrison, 92, wife of Joseph Harrison, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Hopewell HealthCare Center.

Born Sept. 28, 1909, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Wilson and Ella Simon Wallace. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined Pine Grove AME Church and later joined Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu, where she served on the usher board, senior choir, willing workers club and the kitchen committee. She was a member of the YMCA, Farmers Aid and Joint Stock lodges. She was employed as a dietary technician for Alcolu Elementary School from 1971 to 1990.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene Wallace and his wife Louise and Joseph Harrison Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Baltimore, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Smith Wallace and Lee Ernest Wallace; and a sister, Ella W. Dozier.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating, along with Minister Jonathan Anderson assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Addie W. Hinson
Addie Elizabeth Wadford Hinson, 87, widow of Sammie Lee Hinson, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at her home.

Born May 24, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Harley Calhoun and Susan Annah Trimnal Wadford. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class, the XYZ Club and a former member of the XYZ Choir. She was retired from Berger’s Men Shop.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Wells and her husband Phillip, with whom she made her home, and Marguerite Reardon and her husband Norward of Sumter; two granddaughters, Debbie Carraway of Sumter and Cynthia Frenz and her husband Edward of Charleston; three grandsons, Carl Carraway and his wife Denise of Elgin, Kenneth Reardon and his wife Lisa of Sumter and Paul Reardon and his wife Ashley of Hartsville; a step granddaughter, Jeannie Moss and her husband Tommy of Sumter; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister.

Services were 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. James Chandler officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Arthur D. Mercy
Flat Rock, N.C. - Arthur Dale Mercy, 81, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House.

A native to Bellingham, Wash., he was the son of the late Alfred Leonard and Ivy Brown Mercy. He was a long-time resident of Manning and had lived in Ft. Myers, Fla. before moving to Flat Rock in 1991. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Floyd Mercy who died in 1977.

Mercy studied Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He spent most of his working life in the timber industry, harvesting and exporting wood products. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Osborne Mercy; three daughters, Sandra M. Matthews and her husband Gary, Daylene M. Altman and her husband Coley and Trudy M. Brown; step-sons, William Thomas Kennedy and his wife Martie, Herbert Anthony Kennedy and his wife Cindy; seven grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors in Hendersonville, N.C.

Memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6321, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793.

Geneva W. Wilson
Decatur, Ga. - Geneva W. Wilson, wife of Deacon Roosevelt Wilson, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Dekalb Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Ruth Johnson Warley and the late Theodore Warley. She attended Clarendon County schools and New Hanover County schools in Wilmington, N.C. She worked as a child carecenter manager and a banker. She retired from Wachovia Bank of Atlanta, Ga., in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Melvin Wilson of Atlanta; and three grandchildren, Tamara, Desmond and Latrenda of Atlanta.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Atlanta, Ga.
