Nettie L. Hill
Nettie Lee Hill, 69, died Sunday, August 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 18, 1932, in Bishopville, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Millie Lovett Hill. She was a member of Paxville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Gerald Oates of Florence; a grandson; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Paxville Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

Memorials may be made to Paxville Baptist Church.

Frankie McCray
Frankie McCray, 51, husband of Betty Ann Epps McCray, died Friday, August 24, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 10, 1949, in Clarendon County, he was the son of McSwain Epps and the late Louise Pearson McCray.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Leon McCray of Lynchburg; three daughters, Betty, Jenise and Denise McCray of Lynchburg; eight brothers, Jerome McCray, Roy Lee McCray, Glenn McCray, Dan McCray and Mack Epps of Lynchburg and Joe Epps, Corrall McCray and Daniel McCray of Sumter; eight sisters, Lou Emma McCray, Evelyn Kennedy, Lisa Mae Fullwood, Albertina Dickey, Julia Nowlin and Iris Epps of Lynchburg and Joanne Temoney and Tina Epps of Sumter; and seven grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Sinai AME Church with the Rev. Alfred Bradley, pastor, officiating and the Rev. G. Coleman assisting.

Burial followed in Edwards Cemetery.

John M. Cantey Sr.
John Marion Cantey Sr., 76, widower of Shirley Barbour Cantey, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at WJB Dorn VA Medical Center.

Born Aug. 28, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John and Fannie Adell Thompson Cantey.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and received an honorable discharge after serving valiantly in the United States Armed Services in the defense of democracy in this country and around the world.

Survivors include three sons, Frank Richardson of Sumter and John Cantey Jr. and Myron Cantey of Paterson, N.J.; five daughters, Cassandra A. Lyles of Laurens, Valencia Benson of Passaic, N.J., Batina Gamble of Pinewood, Patricia Wilder of Dalzell and Marian Cantey of Spartanburg; a stepson, Kenneth Washington of Paterson; a stepdaughter, Mildred Glover of Paterson; and an adopted sister, Ruthie Mae White of Charleston.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel Jones and Jerry Jamil Cantey; a daughter, Sara Ann Cardwell; and three sisters, Elizabeth Cantey Whittaker, Dorothy Logan and Ola Mae Cantey.

Services were 3 p.m. at New Hope AME Church with the Rev. Joseph Seawright officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Jannie C. Cooper
Jannie Wese Cox Cooper, 75, wife of Willie Dave Cooper, died Monday, August 27, 2001, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1926, in Kingstree, she was the daughter of the late Jeff and Louise Cox.
Survivors besides her husband include seven sons, Willie Dave Cooper Jr. of Sumter, Alex L.

Cooper of Manning, Truman Cooper, James Cooper, Raymond Cooper and Cleo Cooper of Lake City and Charles Cooper of Morongo Valley, Calif.; five daughters, Mary Lee Snowden and Lizzie A. Cyrus of Rochester, N.Y., JoAnn Tucker of Orangeburg, Dorothy Huff of Jacksonville, N.C., and Barbara Jean Cooper of the home; a brother, William Cox of Trenton, N.J.; a sister, Estelle Fulmore of Lake City; an adopted daughter, Katherine Singletary of Lake City; 45 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Evans Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in White Oak Cemetery.

Ruby K. Dozier
Ruby Katherine Keels Dozier, 63, widow of Instine Dozier, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Dozier was a graduate of Manning Training School and attended Miami-Dade College. She also attended Linsey Hopkins College, where she was trained to become a nurse assistant. She was a longtime member of Williams Chapel Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Nixon Dozier of Sumter and Tony Dozier of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Carolyn Benton of Manning and Shantia Dozier of Columbia; two brothers, Russell Keels and Carl Keels of Miami; a foster brother, Raliegh “BB” Keels of Miami; five sisters, Maxine Andrews, Martha Kitchen, Mary Pearson and Diane Kendrick of Miami and Joanne Henry of Manning; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kelvin Dozier; and a sister, Ruth Young.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams Chapel Christian Church with the Rev. Emanuel Evans officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Annie C. Fleming
Annie Carter Fleming, 69, widow of Sammie Lee Fleming died Monday, September 17, 2001, at her home in Manning.

Born March 15, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Eleazer and Sarah Richardson Carter. She attended Taw Caw Baptist Church and later attended Providence Baptist Church in Washington , D.C. After retiring from the FBI, she rejoined Taw Caw Baptist Church. She was a member of Naomi Chapter Order of O.E.S. Lodge No. 9 and Prince Hall Affiliation Eureka No. 9 of Washington , D.C. She was a retired employee of Jomac Industry of Summerton.

Survivors include four sons, Levi Fleming and Cliff Fleming of Manning, Clyde Fleming of Hinesville, Ga. and Lynn Fleming of Savannah, Ga.; three daughters, Edith A. Fleming and Shirley Whack of Manning and Judy Fleming of Laurel, Md.; two brothers, Lewis Carter and Levie Carter of Manning; a sister, Willine Kinlaw of Manning; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleathea Fleming.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, with the Elder Sammy C. Smith, the Rev. M.L. Jackson, the Rev. Mattie Mouzon and Elder Gregory Perry assisting.

Burial followed in Sammie L. Fleming Memorial Cemetery.

Wallace E. Feagin
HEMINGWAY - Wallace E. Feagin, 79, died Wednesday, September 19, 2001, in Myrtle Beach.

Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late James E. and Bessie Lee Feagin. He attended Scranton schools and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member of the adult men’s Sunday school class. He was an avid deer hunter, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a crane operator for the United Contractors of Chester.

Survivors include a son, Randall L. Feagin and his wife Peggy, of Alcolu; a daughter, Pamela F. Musick and her husband, Belton, of Hemingway; four grandchildren, Brandon Feagin and Tammy Feagin of Alcolu and Hunter Musick and Meredith Musick of Hemingway; and two sisters, Frances McCumber and Carolyn Rodgers of Scranton.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harley and Dewey Feagin.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home. Burial followed in Lake City Memorial Park.

Frank Billey Jr.
PHILADELPHIA - Frank Billey Jr., 91, died Sunday, September 9, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital.

Born Feb. 11, 1910, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Frank and Rosa Billey. He attended school in Summerton and was married to the late Sarah Brown. He moved to Philadelphia and joined First Timothy Baptist Church, where he served on the Missionary Board until his health failed.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosa Witherspoon of Philadelphia and Blossom King of High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Elijah and Clyde Billey; two sisters, Rosa Johnson and Emma Gaines; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles W. Billey.

Services were 2 p.m. at Beulah UME Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Panola Cemetery.

Marilyn H. Seeley
Marilyn Ann Hovey Seeley, 72, wife of Paul T. Seeley, died Saturday, September 15, 2001, at her home in Summerton.

Born Sept. 7, 1929, in Ithaca, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Claude and Anna Vesely Hovey. She was formerly an executive secretary at Ithaca College, and left to help run a family construction business for many years. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a daughter, Nancy Kotmel of Ithaca, N.Y.; a stepson, James Seeley of Freeville, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Ronda Foley of Freeville, N.Y.; a brother, Bob Hovey of Hollywood, Fla.; two sons, Donald Hunt of Summerton and Brion Hunt of Savannah, Ga.; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Services were held at Summerton United Methodist Church.

Norwood E. Hodge
Norwood Ervin Hodge, 35, died Monday, September 17, 2001, at his home in Manning.

Born May 20, 1966, in Manning, he was the son of Clarence Ervin Hodge and Sarah Elizabeth DuBose Hodge. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his parents of Manning.

Graveside services were 4 p.m. Wednesday in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.
