MiKayla Gauthier
Brooklyn MiKayla Gauthier, 2, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of Michael W. Gauthier and Heather L. Evans.

Survivors besides her parents of Sumter include her maternal grandparents, Danny and Karen Welch and Al and Kelli Evans of Sumter; paternal grandmother, Nancy Palmer of Myrtle Beach; maternal great-grandparents, Betty Welch of New Zion and Carmen Evans of New Zion, Charles and Kathy Hatfield of Manning and James and Sandra Owens of Sumter; paternal great-grandparents, Pat and Bill Gauthier of Hagerstown, Md.; and a number of special aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, David Matthew Gauthier; maternal great-grandparents, Dewey and Evelyn Newman and Thomas Evans; a special cousin, Catherine Allyssa Bullard; and a maternal great-grandfather, James Howard Welch.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday at Crosswell Baptist Church. The Revs. Rob Porter, Steven Rohrlack and Rodney Howard officiated.

Burial followed in Zoar Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Zoar Community Cemetery, c/o Beverly Newman, 1900 Gaymon Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Constance H. Black
CHESTER - Constance Hussey “Connie” Black, 36, wife of Phillip Allen Black, died Monday, March 25, 2002, after an extended illness.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of Fred D. and Judy S. Hussey.

Survivors besides her husband and her parents include two sons, Travis Martin “Tripp” Brown IV of Manning and Phillip Allen Black Jr. of the home; a daughter, Judie Carey Black of the home; two brothers, Michael Ryan “Mike” Hussey of Turbeville and Frederick Christian “Chris” Hussey of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Winnifred Dell Hussey “Winn” Todd of Turbeville; her paternal grandmother, Myrtle Allsbrooks Hussey of Sumter; a number of nieces and nephews; and a great-nephew.

Services were 3 p.m. Thursday at Great Commission Ministries in Lake City. Pastor Derrick Fort officiated.

Memorials may be made to a local hospice organization.

Mary Thomas

Mary Thomas, 72, wife of Frank Thomas, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Press Robinson and Harriet Bryant Robinson.

She was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. She was a retired food service worker with Clarendon County School District 3.

Survivors besides her husband of Turbeville include three sons, Ray Thomas and Bill Thomas of Manning and Earl Thomas of Sumter; a daughter, Debra Poole of Sumter; two brothers, John Robinson of Sumter and J.C. Beard of Johnsonville; eight grandchildren, DeAnna M. McElveen, Kristie T. Morris, Teri R. Thomas, Donald Brian Meeks, Robert Kelly Thomas, Tina Perry, Paul Hutchinson and Travis E. Thomas; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Hutchinson; two brothers, Clelan Robinson and Harmon Robinson; and a sister, Bell Prosser.

Mary L. Rogers

Mary Louise Rogers, 81, died Friday, August 31, 2001, at Dorch’s Community Care Center.

Born Nov. 16, 1919, in the Biggers community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Dozier and Alice Hilton Rogers. She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Biggers AME Church.

Survivors include a son, Sammie Lee Rogers of Columbia; five brothers, Tommy Lee Rogers of Fayettville, N.C., Levan Rogers of Columbia, Ernest Rogers and James Rogers of Manning and Elliott Rogers of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; and two sisters, Ethel Mitchner of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Lillian Watson of Corona, N.Y.

Services were 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Biggers AME Church with the Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Marion Moore

Marion “Manny” Moore, 84, husband of Louise Renfro Nichols Moore, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 28, 1916, in Rock Hill, he was the son of the late Francis Heyward Moore and Ida Hey Moore. He was an oil marketer, having established Moore Oil Company in September 1958. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College and a member of KA Fraternity; a WWII Fighter Pilot, a former Rotarian and a member of the Mullet Club. He was president of the S.C. Oil Jobber’s Association and a member and former Deacon of The Presbyterian Church in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Dr. John Marion Moore and Joseph Heyward Moore, of manning; a daughter, Verna Louise Pinnix of Ramseur, N.C.; a brother, Joe P. Moore of Manning; and eight grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers and Mullet Club members served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Church.

Martin King

Martin King, 33, died Sunday, September 2, 2001, in Manning.

Born May 31, 1968, in Manning, he was the son of James King and Aleane Murray King.

He was a 1987 graduate of Manning High School and was employed as a brick mason with Robinson’s Construction Co.

Survivors besides his parents include a brother, Kelvin Lamount King of Manning.

Services were 1 p.m. Thursday at Fleming-Delaine Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Muldrow Cemetery.

Ada Jean Garrett
HOLLY HILL - Ada Jean Wiles Garrett, 67, died Monday, September 24, 2001, at a Charleston hospital.

Born in Orangeburg County, she was the daughter of the late Willie David Wiles and Mattie Nettles Wiles Coursey. She was an avid gardener, a member of Holly Hill United Methodist Church and a former member of the UMW.

Survivors include a son, Randy Garrett Jr. of Manning; a daughter, JoAnn Buchanan of Bakersville, N.C.; a brother, Walter David Wiles of Moncks Corner; four sisters, Joyce Collins, Virginia Waterman and Magalene Smoak of Branchville and Jewell McLellan of Orangeburg; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael A. Garrett.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Holly Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jerry Phillips Sr., Albert Cox and Stephen Bowe officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Cattle Creek UMC Building Fund, 6333 Vance Road, Bowman, S.C. 29018 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, S.C. 29260.

Pearl C. Levy
Pearl Cooper Levy, 86, widow of Ernest Cooper Sr., died Friday, September 14, 2001, in Sumter.

Born March 15, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Pearley Cooper and Wanna Bradshaw Cooper. She attended New Jersey public schools and was a former member of Society Hill AME Church and later joined Mt. Chapel Baptist Church. After returning to South Carolina from Buffalo, N.Y., she joined St. John Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jessie Levy of Dalzell and Ernest Levy Jr. of Buffalo; two sisters, Annie Levy of Buffalo and Mary Frazier of Manning; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Cooper; and a sister, Louise C. Clark.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the Revs. Johnny Yeadon, S.R. Miott, Robert Thomas and Leon Terry officiating.

Burial followed in Society Hill AME Church Cemetery.

Carl E. Lowder
COLUMBIA - Carl E. Lowder, 73, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Junious McLaurin Lowder Sr. and Marie Harrington Lowder. He was a graduate of Clemson College and a former agriculture teacher. He was formerly employed by American Ag Chemical Co., where he served as vice president of sales. He was formerly associated with the Tom Jenkins and Bob Capers Realties and was licensed with Russell Jeffcoat Realty.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Carl E. Lowder Jr. of Louisiana; a daughter, Kathy Maybank of Charleston; a sister, Rounette L. Faulkner of Kingstree; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove United Methodist Church of Turbeville.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Curtis Prince
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Curtis Prince, 53, husband of Rene Prince, died Friday, September 14, 2001, at Coney Island Hospital.

Born March 20, 1948, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Emma Burgess and the late Sheldon Prince. He attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1966 graduate of Lincoln High School. He was an entrepreneur.

Survivors besides his mother include four sons, Aaron Prince and Clifton Prince of Bronx, N.Y., Davis Prince of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Michael Prince of Turbeville; five daughters, Akia Prince, Kenyatta Prince and Monee Prince of New York, N.Y., Cherise Prince of Bronx and Lenise Prince of Brooklyn; three brothers, William Prince and Isaiah Prince of Bronx and Ora Lee Prince of Fayettville, N.C.; two sisters, Jonie Mae Amish of New York, N.Y. and Ruby Hannah of Sumter; an adopted son, Derek Prince of Maumee, Ohio; three adopted daughters, Letisha Mervilus of Waldorf, Md., and Demica Morris and Renie Morris of Bronx; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Lee Prince.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Oliver Davis officiating

Burial followed in McFadden Cemetery.
