Danny A. Wooten
Danny Arnold Wooten, 35, died Saturday, September 22, 2001, in Summerton.

Born Nov. 22, 1965, in Farmville, N.C., he was the son of Chester Ray Wooten of Greenville, N.C. and Carol Anderson Nylander of Summerton. He was a carpet installer.

Survivors besides the parents are his step-father, Bob Nylander of Summerton; a brother. Tony Ray Wooten of Farmville, N.C.; and a sister, Kimberly Lynn Scucchi of Lake Village, Ark.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Oscar Johnson Jr.
Oscar Johnson Jr., 61, husband of Minnie Lois Thompson Johnson, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 30, 1940, in Manning, he was the son of the late Oscar Johnson Sr. and Martha Brown Johnson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed for many years as a truck driver with Georgia-Pacific, Bendix, Sumter Casket Co. and Fort Roofing Co. After his marriage, he joined Bethesda Baptist Church in Sumter.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Rhonnie Thompson and his wife Anna of Columbia, Alonda Moses and his wife Jacquelyn, Glenwood Johnson and his wife Rita, and Gregory Johnson of Sumter; two daughters, Linda Sharper and her husband Hercules and Shirley Ann Johnson of Paxville; two brothers, Mood Johnson and his wife Regina of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Robert Johnson and his wife Lisa of Manning; six sisters, Rose Ann Blackwell and her husband Onna of Manning, Janet Clay and her husband Nate of Coney Island, N.Y., Queen Pearson and her husband Peter of Brooklyn, Julia Johnson of Long Island, N.Y., Belma Franklin and her husband Robert of Brooklyn and Edith Kennerly of Allentown, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence Holland, Nathaniel Johnson and James Johnson.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel. Pastor Michael Walters officiated, assisted by the Revs. Cokley Richburg, Albertus Smiling, James Johnson and Roosevelt McFadden.

Burial followed in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery.

Willie G. “Son” Richburg
Willie G. “Son” Richburg, 89, husband of Josie B. Richburg, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born Jan. 6, 1913, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Richard Richburg and Lurena Montgomery Richburg.

He was a member of the Friendship AME Church, where he was on the steward board, trustee board, finance committee, served as an annual and general AME church conference delegate and was a past president of the Manning District Lay Organization.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Willie E. Richburg of Irvington, N.J., Joseph H. Richburg of Hillside, N.J., P. Martin Richburg of Jonesboro, Ga., and Leon N. Richburg of Summerton; four daughters, Deloris Hilliard of Santee, Margaret Richburg of Englewood, Colo., Bessie R. Askew of Newark, N.J., and Mattie L. Richburg of Baltimore; a brother, the Rev. C.C. Richburg of Summerton; two sisters, Lucretia Ragin and Minnie B. Hamilton of Manning; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at Friendship AME Church. The Rev. Henry Cohen, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Revs. Ceasar R. Richburg, Rufus Gaymon, Sammie Simmons, Ashley Vaughn, George Ashford, John Frederick, W.J. Baxter, Robert L. McCants, S.R. Miott, Lee M. Seward, Benjamin P. Boston, Alonza Middleton and presiding Bishop, the Rev. Henry Allen Belin Jr.

Burial followed in Friendship Cemetery.

Gertrude B. Thompson
Gertrude Bateman Thompson, 88, widow of Ervin Lee Thompson, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002.

Born in Gable, she was the daughter of the late Delgar Bateman and Minnie David Bateman.

She was a retired bookkeeper for McClellan’s Department Store.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Thompson Reese and husband Harold of Sumter; four grandchildren, Debra Carol Finley, Pamela Marie Wilder, Gerald Kenneth Reese and Kay Reese Webster; four great-grandchildren, Shane Carroway, Meagan Ashley Webster, McKenleigh Rachael Webster and Michael Reese Webster.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine Wilder.

Graveside services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The Revs. Bobby Driggers and Dr. Ed McLeod officiated.

Joseph Ard
WEST COLUMBIA - Joseph “Joe” Faye Ard, 56, died Friday, April 5, 2002.

Born in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Albert and Lexie Gainey Ard. He was owner/operator of Palmetto Food Equipment Company Inc. of West Columbia and a graduate of Columbia Commercial College.

Survivors include a son, Joseph F. Ard II of West Columbia; three brothers, Phillip D. Ard of Barnsville, Ga., Douglas A. Ard of Greeleyville and Aubrey A. Ard of Manning; and three sisters, Bertha A. Chandler of Kingstree, Phylis D. Earls of Cumberland Gap, Tenn. and Peggy G. Sutton of Knoxville, Tenn.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes, Lexington Chapel.

Burial followed in Woodridge Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital and the Leukemia Society, 1247 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC 29063.

Levi Conyers
Levi Conyers Sr., 82, widower of Leona Watson Conyers, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 15, 1919, in the Jordan community, he was the son of the late Olivia Conyers Simon and stepson of the late Priestly Simon. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a farmer all of his life.

Survivors include four sons, Jackson Conyers of Manning, Columbus Conyers and his wife Sarah of Paxville, Nolton Conyers of Philadelphia and Levi Conyers Jr. of Manning; six sisters, Daisy Mae Hilton of Philadelphia, Rosetta Robinson and her husband Johnny of Manning, Olivia Neal and her husband William of Philadelphia, Viola Miller and her husband Willie and Mary Mickens and her husband Peter of Sumter and Mary Sharpe and her husband Woodrow of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Lorrine Simon James of Davenport, Fla.; 27 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four children, two sisters and three brothers.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel. Edward Ross officiated.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were pallbearers and floral bearers.

Agnes M. Duke
NEW ZION — Agnes Mouzon Duke, 73, widow of Bishop LeRoy Duke, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Colbert Mouzon and Edna Thomas Mouzon. She was retired from Dubin’s Department Store and Belk Department Store. She was a former treasurer of the Oakdale Community Center and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the choir.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Faye D. Welch of Sumter and Marilyn D. Kennedy of Kingstree; three sisters, Pauline Jasper of Kingstree, Meddie Crabbe of Summerville and Nina West of Ridgeland; one brother, Frazier Mouzon of New York; five grandchildren, Melissa Jackson, April Stanfield and Justin Welch of Sumter, and Greg Kennedy and Michelle Shearer of New Zion; and four great-grandchildren, Sarah and Emily Jackson of Sumter and Cory and Josh Kennedy of New Zion.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday in Midway Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church, Tuomey Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Janiah M. Fluker
Janiah Marie Fluker, 15 days old, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital.

Born April 6, 2002, in Columbia, she was the daughter of Janice Briggs and Stephen Fluker of Columbia.

Survivors besides her parents include a maternal grandmother, Barbara Jane Baxter of Columbia; a maternal grandfather, Lee Ernest Briggs of Manning; maternal great-grandparents, Oscar and Carrie Briggs of Manning; a paternal grandmother, Gloria Marie Burch Fluker of Columbia; a paternal grandfather, Clifton C. Fluker of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a paternal great-grandfather, Alfonso Burch of Chicago; three aunts, Barbara Simon of Manning and Angela M. Fluker and LaTonya Chatman of Columbia; and three uncles, Clifton C. Fluker Jr. of Columbia and Joe Simon and Anthony Briggs of Manning.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Leon Winn officiated.

Michelle R. Cutter
Michelle Renee “Mimi” Cutter, 24, wife of John Benjamin Cutter, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 in Manning.

Born Aug. 11, 1977, in Danville, N.J., she was the daughter of Bruce Lavine and Donna Pesce Alsbrooks. She attended Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church and was employed by Tufco Industries.

Survivors include her husband and mother of Manning and her father of Mirimar, Fla.; a son, Damien Michael Cutter of Manning; two sisters, Lilly Voorhees and Briar Rose Alsbrooks of Manning; four brothers, Christopher Scott Voorhees, Andrew Thomas Voorhees and Jesse James Voorhees of Manning and Benjamin Robert Hollinger of Pennsylvania ; and maternal grandmother, Deanna Triplet of Summerton.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charlie Salter officiated.

Burial followed in Rehobeth Cemetery in Manning.

Pallbearers were Steven Broadway, James Carroll, Bill Miller, Chip Miller, Richard Spivey and Kerry Spivey.

Wilma E. Cox
Wilma E. Player Cox, 90, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at her home.

Born in Shiloh, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Player and Olivia McElveen Player. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was twice married, first to the late Harold Francis King and then to the late George Edward Cox.

Survivors include three sons, Harold Warren King of Winter Springs, Fla., George Gary Cox of Sumter and Edward Leroy Cox of Hillsboro, N.C.; four daughters, Ann King Marsh of Summerton, Helen King McLeod, Patsy Cox Dees and Pamela Cox Davis of Sumter; 24 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Player and William Player; and two sisters, Agnes P. Townsend and Selma P. Truesdale.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Revs. Jim Grasty and Rodney Howard officiated.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 2401 Bethel Church Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.
