Thenia B. Baird
Thenia Blackmon Baird, 80, widow of Cullie Edison Baird, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Oct. 7, 1922, in Rich Hill, she was the daughter of the late Chester Franklin Blackmon and the late Zelma Couch Blackmon. She was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra B. Dukes and husband, Marion W., of Turbeville; three brothers, C.F. Blackmon of Sumter, Donald Blackmon of Ocala, Fla., and Steve Blackmon of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; four sisters, Sara Bazzle of N. Charleston, Hazeline Hill of Florence, Edith Aldrich of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Carolyn Truesdale of Camden; a granddaughter, Tonya D. Byrd and husband, John Richard Byrd, of Turbeville; and a grandson-in-law, Shamokin Gladden; and two great-grandchildren, John Richard Byrd II and Victoria-Lynn Byrd.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Misty Lynn Gladden; two sisters, Margaret Holliday and Kathleen “Betty” Green; and a brother, Waddell Blackmon.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. James Holliday officiating.

Burial followed in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, P.O. Box 233, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or to New Zion United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 31, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Desmond A. Sweat
Desmond Antion Sweat, 10, died Saturday, October 19, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Aug. 26, 1992, in Columbia, he was the son of Marie Sweat and Willie Cohen. He was a student at Fairfield Primary in Winnsboro from kindergarten through third grade. He attended John P. Thomas Elementary School for one year, where he was a defensive end on the Fairfield County Football Team for the Panthers. He attended Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Sumter and father of Winnsboro include a maternal grandmother, Jeanette Sweat of Manning; a godmother, Aleatha Ford of Winnsboro; four uncles; and eight aunts.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Brittany Marie Sweat.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Ashley Vaughn, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Eugene Thomas, evangelist Elizabeth Richburg and Prophtess Mumford.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Classmates served as pallbearers and floral bearers.

Sarah D. Davis
Atlanta, Ga. - Sarah Mariah Devoe Davis, 90, widow of Charlie Davis Sr., died February 23, 2003, at the Athena Rehabilitation Facility.

Born April 1, 1912, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Devoe and Alice Richardson. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in Pinewood and later moved to New York and joined Emmanuel AME Church, where she served on the usher board and the stewardess board. She also worked with the Senior Citizen Center in New York.

Survivors include a son, Charlie Davis Jr. and his wife, Angeline, of New York; three daughters, Ruth Wright and husband, Charlie Sr., of Sumter, Annie Eliza Antoine of Brookland, N.Y., and Anna Davis Wilson and husband, Richard, of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Jeff Devoe and wife, Ann, of Farmville, Va.; a sister, Mollie Reeves of Brooklyn; 30 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Warren Hatcher, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were the grandsons.

Floral bearers were the granddaughters.

Mabel L. English
Mabel Landreth English, 90, widow of Andrew C. English Sr., died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born Oct. 21, 1912, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she was the daughter of the late William O. and Rosa Fann Landreth. She was retired head housekeeper at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Andrew C. English Jr., and wife, Ann, of Manning; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sons-in-law, John W. Davis of Baton Rouge, La., and Ret. Col. John G. Gergulis of Brandon, Fla.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Paul English; and two daughters, Carolyn English Davis and Helen English Gergulis.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of the Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Stephen Bowe and the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial will follow in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Robertson, Lin Rainey, Harold Furse, Doug Mouzon, Reuben Hardy and J.D. Duke.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102 or Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1794 Old Georgetown Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Kathy W. Lookabill
Wadesboro, N.C. - Kathy Wilson Lookabill, 65, wife of Fred Lookabill, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at the Anson Community Hospital.

Born April 22, 1937, in Monterey, Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Gertrude Heavener Wilson. She was a certified residential care administrator and was a loving person dedicated to caring for people. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother as well as an outstanding Cub Scout leader.

Survivors include her husband Fred Lookabill of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray Lookabill and Donnette Lookabill of Manning; a daughter, Gayle L. Hildreth and her husband, Tim, of Wadesboro; four grandchildren, Danielle and David Lookabill, Cody and Brad Hildreth; two brothers, Art Wilson of Denton and Steve Wilson of Statesville; a sister, Charlotte Blevins of Rockingham; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Deep Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Robertson, George Sentor and Marvin Tyson officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Gloria M. Sharp
Gloria Mae Mazelin Sharp, 64, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at her home in Manning.

Born June 1, 1938, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Warren I. Sr. and Ilah Maxine Berry Mazelin. She was a nursing assistant, and a member of New Start Community Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Warren “Buddy” Mazelin Jr. of Manning and Grover Mazelin of Texas; two sisters, Doris Boykin of Columbia and Laurel Mazelin of Manning; three grandchildren, Jennifer Sharp of Manning, Daniel Sharp and Robert Turner Sharp of Sumter; and a stepdaughter, Melissa Turner of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ilah Janine Sharp.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in New Start Community Church with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Sumter.

Pallbearers were Michael Welch, Michael Spigner, Charles Hodge, Burt Wilson, Jessie Atkins and Herbert Mitchum.

Memorials may be made to New Start Community Church, P.O. Box 119, Manning, S.C. 29102.

M.D. Barnhill
M.D. Barnhill, 63, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at his home.

Born in Georgetown County, he was the son of the late Oak Barnhill and Allie Katherine Coker Barnhill. He was a retired grocery store owner and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy “Dottie” Barnhill and Madelyn “Midge” Flores of Alcolu; a son, Montag “Tagey” Webb of Alcolu; a stepson, Jerry Coker and his wife Wanda of Turbeville; two sisters, Sarah Jane Floyd and her husband Son of Sumter and Letha Welch and her husband Kenny of Turbeville; a brother, John Henry Barnhill of Colorado; a granddaughter, Carla Flores of Alcolu; two step-grandsons, Michael Bush of Turbeville and Jerry Coker Jr. of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherwood Barnhill and Gene Autry Barnhill; and a grandson, Matthew Flores.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel in Olanta.

Burial followed in Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Ruth Q. Shannon
Ruth Quick Shannon, 74, widow of Clinton Lee Shannon, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at her home.

Born July 5, 1927, in Lee County, she was the daughter of Ida Mashore Quick-Lucas and the late James Lucas. She attended Lee County public schools. She was the only child of Ida Mashore Quick-Lucas. She was called “Mother” by many who knew her. In 1941, she married Clinton Shannon. She was a dedicated member of St. Mark Baptist Church in Bishopville. In 1957, she became a member of the body of Christ under the officiating pastor, Brother Leo Harkless Sr. of the Church of Christ in Lamar, where she served as a faithful sister and mother in Christ until her death.
Survivors include four sons, Willie, Robert, Mitchell and Charles Shannon of Sumter; two grandsons she raised, Terry Sylvester Brown of Florence and Sam Brown III of Atlanta; seven daughters, Ruby James, Stella Perrear, Vermell Shannon, Frances Brunson, Nancy Brown, Carolyn Alston of Sumter and Ruth Bullock of Richmond, Va.; 63 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Jessie Shannon and David Shannon; and a daughter, Mable Shannon Julius.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Church of Christ in Lamar. Brother Leo Harkless, pastor, officiated, assisted by Brother Silas Prescott, Brother Marvin Sanders, Brother Sylvester McCray, Brother Michael James and Brother Jenkin Burroughs.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Brothers of the church served as pallbearers and sisters of the church served as flower bearers.

Mildred S. Mishoe
GREELEYVILLE - Mildred Stoll Mishoe, 84, widow of John Rodgers Mishoe Sr., died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born April 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Judge Phillip Henry Stoll and Evelyn Cunningham Stoll. She was a member of Greeleyville Methodist Church and an active member of the Sunday school program for many years.

Survivors include two sons, John Rodgers Mishoe Jr. and his wife Sandra of Manning and Leonard Stoll Mishoe of Charleston and Greeleyville; two grandsons, John Rodgers Mishoe III of Manning and J. Frank Mishoe of Manning; one granddaughter, Alicia Mishoe Howard of Lugoff; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville. The Rev. Devere Williams officiated.

Memorials may be sent to Greeleyville Methodist Church, P.O. Box 241, Greeleyville, S.C. 29056.
