Amanda Hunter

DALZELL – Amanda Harvin Johnson Hunter, 93, widow of Curtis L. Johnson and Bennie Hunter, died Feb. 8, 2004, at 6270 Fish Road, Dalzell.

Born July 1, 1910, in Davis Station, she was the daughter of the late Wade D. and Louisa Johnson Harvin. At an early age, she became a member of Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station. Her early education was obtained in Marion County, where she graduated from Marion Training School, May 29, 1931. She later graduated from Apex Beauty College, Brooklyn, N.Y. She became a member of First Baptist Church, Sheepsheadbay, N.Y., and later joined Convent Baptist Church of New York City. She owned a beauty salon and worked as a cosmetologist for many years. After returning to the South, she joined Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities to include the senior missionary society and the pastor’s aide ministry. In the community, she was a member of the One More Effort Club, the Music Guild and the Order of Eastern Star. She attended the Shepherd’s Center, where she took classes in Bible studies and participated in other youth activities.

Survivors include a devoted niece, H. Theola Kirvin Kinard; brother-in-law, Rubin Hunter; niece, Mamie Lou Evans Wells; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Johnson.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert. The Rev. Dr. C.H. Davis, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Elder Willie J. Nelson, the Revs. Ronnie Brown, John F. Kennedy, Lillian Reynolds and Burdell Hill.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

L. Eloise Hightower

Lessie Eloise Hightower, 73, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born June 26, 1930, in Denmark, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Corrie Collins Hightower. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include seven nephews, Dr. Ken Johnson of Manning, Ronnie Hightower, Sam Hightower, and Larry Hightower of Cope, Joe Hightower of Atlanta, O’Neal Hightower of Lexington, and Michael Hightower of Denmark; two nieces, Nancy Peters of Cope and Grace Eubanks of Denmark; and a great-nephew, Gerald Kenneth Johnson Jr.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Feb.12, 2004, in Ghents Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Denmark. The Rev. Danny Bridges officiated the service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Susie Mae Fulton

Susie Mae Fulton, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Sidney B. Fulton Sr. and Rosa Cooper Fulton. She received her formal education in the Melina Parochial School and the Goodwill Parochial School. She graduated from Coulter Academy and received her Bachelor of Arts from Morris College and Master of Arts from USC. She also did further studies at Johnson C. Smith University. She was a lifelong member of Melina Presbyterian Church, serving on the deacon board and Presbyterian Women Organization. She was a retired educator after 40 years in East Clarendon School District 3, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, S.C. Education Association, N.E.A., Clarendon Teacher’s Association and the New Light Chapter No. 254 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one brother, Jake Fulton of Sardinia; three sisters, Marie F. Kennedy and Clara F. McFadden of Sardinia, and Lottie B. Cooper of Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Sr., Sidney Jr., and James Fulton Sr.; and four sisters, Otto F. Moses, Mary F. Brown, Ruth F. Rhodes and Lucille C. Kennedy.

Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Melina Presbyterian Church USA in Sardinia. The Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Terry W. Driggers

Terry Wayne Driggers, 34, died Feb. 12, 2004, at his residence.

Born in Florence, he was the son of Mack Driggers Jr. and the late Virginia Coates Driggers. He was employed as foreman with Paragon Enterprises.

Survivors include his father, Mack Driggers Jr. of Florence; his fiancee, Tina Turner of Manning; two sons, Terry Wayne Driggers Jr. and Joshua Turner of Manning; a daughter, Courtney Turner of Manning; a brother, M. “Thad” (Cathy) Driggers of Florence; and a sister, Gail D. (Marion) Woodham of Florence.

Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Florence Memorial Mausoleum Chapel. Burial followed in Florence Memorial Gardens.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Helen T. E. Cook

Helen Tillman Ennis Cook, 90, died, Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her home in Atlanta.

Born in Milledgeville, Ga., on Sept. 29, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Kathleen Alsbrook and Howard Bert Ennis. She received her education in Manning, but graduated from Girls High in Atlanta and GSCW in Milledgeville, Ga. While working in the Atlanta Public School System as a guidance counselor and career education specialist, Helen earned a master’s degree at Emory and a doctorate in education from the University of Georgia.

Survivors include daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Cook of Augusta, Helen Kathleen Postell Cook of Venice, Fla.; sister, Marjorie Ennis Hiatt Collins of Smyra, Ga. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held at Haygood United Methodist Church in Atlanta on Feb. 8, 2004.

A.S. Turner & Sons of Decatur, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

Ellen F. Bowman

PINEWOOD – Ellen Fordham Bowman, 85, wife of James “Polly” Bowman, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 7, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Fordham and Mary Lou Brown Fordham. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church where she served faithfully.

Survivors include one daughter, Carrie Mae Bowman of the home; one brother, Richard Brown of Summerton; one granddaughter, Susan Bowman; one great-grandson, Surenza Bowman of the home; one foster daughter, Dora Lee of New York City; and one adopted son, the Rev. James (Helen) Robinson of Manning.

Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant UME Church, Panola community in Pinewood. The Rev. James Robinson officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Jonathan Smith, Elder Roosevelt Boyd and Minister Mary L. Brailsford.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Abraham Bannister

Abraham “Ham” Bannister, 51, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County.

Born Feb. 17, 1952, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Nelson Bannister Sr. and Lillie Mae Dow Bannister. He was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He was a skilled butcher. In his youth, he was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Melvin Bannister of Conway and Willie L. Bannister of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Frances Bannister of Summerton, Lila Mae (Raymond) Green of Brooklyn and Janet (Herbert) Junius of Summerton; and a goddaughter, Antoinett Postell Nelson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in Pinewood. Minister Michael Gipson and the Rev. Amos Hatcher officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Warren Hatcher, pastor.

Burial followed in Summerton Funeral Service Cemetery, Davis Station community.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Christine L. Prescott

Christine Lowder Prescott, 77, beloved wife of the late W. Clinton Prescott, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at her residence.

Mrs. Prescott, born in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, was the daughter of the late Tindal and Ida Logan Lowder. She was retired from Pioneer Ltd. She was a longtime member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was active in Sunday school and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include three daughters, Jean (Jerry) Jackson of Sumter, Mary (Steve) Brockman of Spartanburg and Vicki (Allen) Turley of Greenville; five grandchildren, Steve Brockman Jr. and Christie Johnson of Spartanburg; Alexander Turley of Greenville; Evalyn Rumph and Gene Jackson of Sumter; four great-grandchildren, Anna, Becca and Sarah Brockman and Chadwick Johnson of Spartanburg; one sister, Katherine Day of Sumter; two brothers, Burrell Lowder of St. Matthews and Wilbur Lowder of Florence; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Junious and Clint Lowder.

Service were held on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Lee Phillips and Jerry Watson officiated the service.

Burial followed at Brunson Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, 120 Kaminer Way Parkway, Suite G, Columbia, SC 29210, Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, 3030 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29150, or Tuomey Hospice, 129 N. Washington St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Loretta B. Frierson

Mrs. Loretta Brunson Frierson, age 66, widow of George Frierson, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

She was the daughter of the late Mood Brunson and Louvina B. Clark. She was employed as a cook at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning for 15 years. She retired from Sumter Developmental Learning Center in Sumter, where she was also employed as a cook. Upon retirement, she served as a foster grandparent at Manning Early Childhood Center, Manning. She was a member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, where she served as former financial secretary and a member of both the Chancel Choir and kitchen committee. She was also a member of Block CHIP Dinner Club, Manning.

Survivors include one daughter, Diane Blanding of Manning; five sons, Harold, Ronald and George Frierson Jr. of Sumter, Calvin Blair and Donald Frierson of Manning; two sisters, Margie Wilkins of Manning and Dorothy Blair of Baltimore; two brothers, William Blair of Manning and Charlie Blair of Silver Spring, Md.; one stepdaughter, Patricia Bethea of New York City; an adopted daughter, Felecia Blanding of Manning; a stepson, Freddie Bethea of Manning; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Paxville. The Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Coakley Richburg and Richard Dyson.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie E. Boyd

COLESVILLE, Md. – Willie E. Boyd, 71, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Colesville, Md.

Born March 6, 1932, he was the son of the late Edward J. Boyd and Minnie I. Ragin Boyd of Pinewood. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Scott’s Branch High School in 1952, where he was an excellent baseball and basketball player. He loved sports and also actively participated in community activities. Willie was one of the first black bus drivers after integration in Clarendon County.

Determined to excel in life, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served diligently for many years. He married Mamie Richardson while in the service and later settled in Washington, D.C. Then shortly thereafter, they moved to Colesville, Md. An advocate of education, he then enrolled in Howard University, where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in human services and business administration. Willie retired from the federal government as an engineer with formerly the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, under the direction of civil rights activist James Farmer, today known as the Department of Health and Human Services.

Willie was preceded in death by his oldest sister, Rosa Lee Boyd Gaymon.

Survivors include a son, James William (Frances) Gaymon of Trinity, N.C.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Tamika Quick of High Point, N.C.; a grandson, Pfc. David Gaymon of Fort Bragg, N.C.; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mr. James (Thelma) Boyd of Thomasville, N.C., and Elder Roosevelt (Dorothy) Boyd of Pinewood; two sisters, Mrs. Leavone Canty and Mrs. Mary Shannon of Pinewood; one great-aunt, Mrs. Mary Boyd Gilbo of Asheville, N.C.; and a very special family, the Coles of Colesville, Md.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at New Hope UME Church, Pinewood. The Revs. Leroy T. James, Willie Green, O’Donald Dingle, J.H. Pringle and Jonathan Smith officiated the service.

Burial followed in the New Hope Community Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
