Benny Watts

ADEL, Ga. – Benny Watts, 67, widower of Lane Ballard Watts, died Thursday, July 20, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Adel.

Mr. Watts was born Sept. 2, 1938, in Clarendon County, a son of the late Bush and Pearl Hodge Watts. He lived in Sumter most of his life before moving to Cook County nine years ago. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, a retired EMT, volunteer fireman and U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include two daughters, Gwen (Jeff) Patterson of Hahira, Ga., and Jackie (David) Powers of Gainesville, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Jarrett Patterson of Hahira, Kristen, Kyle and Cass Powers, all of Gainesville.

Memorial services were held Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Smith officiating.

In keeping with Mr. Watts’ wishes, he was cremated.

Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Inc. of Adel was in charge of arrangements.

John W. Bradham Jr.

John Wilson Bradham Jr., 64, husband of Hazel Phillips Bradham, died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at his home in Manning.

Born Jan. 21, 1941, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John Wilson Bradham Sr. and the late Louise Lewis Bradham. He attended Clemson University, was a Gideon, a general contractor, and attended First Baptist Church in Manning.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, John Wilson “Wil” (Sarah) Bradham III of Georgetown; two brothers, Thomas Morgan “Tom” (Aggie) Bradham of Summerton and Cecil David (Begona) Bradham of Manning; three grandchildren, Joshua Lewis Bradham, Anna Ruth Bradham and John Owen “Job” Bradham.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 21, 2005, in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wil Bradham, the Rev. Dr. Jack Moore and the Rev. Dr. Robert Lewis Alderman officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Missions of Southeast Baptist Association, P.O. Box 2745, Georgetown, S.C. 29442 or to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Muldrow Burgess Sr.

Muldrow Burgess Sr., 95, widower of Margaret Muldrow Burgess, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at Mariner Healthcare Center, Sumter. He was born Sept. 20, 1909, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, a son of the late Alexander Burgess and Lizzie McFadden Burgess.

He received his formal education at Melina and Goodwill parochial schools. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Melina Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by two sons, Muldrow (Hattie) Burgess Sr. and Alexander (Evelyn) Burgess, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two daughters, Alena (Curtis) Graham of Charleston and Daisy Tate of Fort Pierce, Fla.; an additional daughter-in-law, Hulene Burgess of Philadelphia, Pa.; four sisters, Ethel B. Byrd and Alford B. Lemon, both of Sumter, Dorothy Yoes of Baltimore, Md., and Eunice Scarborough of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Burgess.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, were held on Monday, July 25, 2005, at Melina Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.

Samuels Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys P. Goodine

On Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Gladys Perry Goodine departed this life.

Gladys Perry Goodine was born in Clarendon County. She was the daughter of the late Lucious Perry and Nora Nesbitt Perry. She graduated from Manchester High School in Pinewood. She continued her education at Morris College in Sumter and later transferred to Allen University in Columbia, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. She received a Master’s Degree from Cambridge University in Boston, Mass., and did further studies at the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina Sumter. She received a nursing degree from Harlem Hospital in New York, N.Y.

She taught science and biology for 38 years in Sumter School District 2 and Clarendon School District 1 before she retired. She also taught science for the Upward Bound programs at Morris College and was employed as an Adult Education teacher for many years for Sumter and Lee counties. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Alumni of Allen University and the University of South Carolina. She worked as a nurse at Harlem Hospital and Lennox Hill Hospital in New York and upon moving back to South Carolina where she was employed by Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

She was a member of St. James AME Church in Pinewood where she was a Sunday school teacher and the superintendent of the Sunday School Department.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories: two sons, Lloyd Goodine III and Ryan Stukes Goodine, both of the home; five sisters, Rovenia Stukes of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mattie Ray of Philadelphia, Pa., Shirley (Heyward) Brunson of Sumter, Mary Lou Hopkins and Vernice P. Brunson, both of Pinewood; and one uncle, Charlie Nesbitt of Pinewood.

Mrs. Goodine was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Perry Sr. and Lucious Perry Jr.; and one sister, Susie Perry Nelson.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 25, 2005, at the St. James AME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. James Rouse.

Burial followed in the New Hope AME Church Cemetery in Pinewood.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Janice J. Johnson

BENNETTSVILLE — Janice James Johnson died Sunday, June 17, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late Woodrow James Sr. and Edna Louise Thomas James. She received her formal education at Rosenwald High School. She joined Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, serving in numerous capacities at an early age. She relocated to New York and joined Parkchester Baptist Church in Bronx, N.Y. She graduated from S.C. State University in Orangeburg. She worked at Savannah River Nuclear Plant, Energy Research Association, E.I. Dupont Chemical Plant and Texaco Petroleum Co. in Houston, and later transferring to White Plains, N.Y., where she served as executive secretary to the president/CEO of the company.

Survivors include two brothers, Clarence L. (Barbara) James of Darlington and Joseph Kenneth James of Atlanta; four sisters, Louise (John) David of Bennettsville, Yvonne (Hayes F.) Samuels Jr. of Manning, Frances Garvin of Bennettsville and Jacquelyn (Ben) Slayton of Los Angeles; 10 nieces; and 10 nephews.

She was preceded in death by Samuel, Charles and Woodrow James Jr.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 22, 2005, at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Byron Wilson, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. Julius Squire, the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough and the Rev. Patrick Pierre.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mary D. Bosier

PINEWOOD – Mary Dow Bosier entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 17, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born in Clarendon County, Panola section, on Feb. 6, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Mooney and Rena Gilliard Dow. She was the wife of Deacon Isaac “Babe” Bosier. She was a lifelong dedicated employee of the Clarendon County School System and Briggs Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as president of various choirs and as a member of the missionary board and many other boards, until her health declined.

She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Bosier.

She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memories, her husband, Deacon Isaac “Babe” Bosier of the home; one daughter, Mary B. Matthews of Pinewood; five sons, John Bosier and Floyd Bosier, both of High Point, N.C., Isaac “IJ” Bosier, James Bosier and the Rev. Thomas Bosier, all of Thomasville, N.C., and Bobby Leroy Bosier of the home; two sisters, Jannie Washington and Thelma Walker, both of Pinewood; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 22, 2206, at at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, host pastor, officiating and the Rev. W.J. Chandler, eulogist.

Final resting place was at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Isabell D. Adee

Isabell DuBose Lowder Adee, age 81, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at the home of her daughter.

Ms. Adee was born in Clarendon County, on Dec. 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Joe DuBose and Lottie Ridgeway DuBose. She was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church and the Sunshine Girls of Wedgefield Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Janice Lowder (Steve) Buckner of Dalzell; one brother, Richard (Fran) DuBose of Manning; three sisters, Corine Ard of Manning, Mildred Lewis of Myrtle Beach and Josephine Drake of St. Matthews; five grandchildren, Capt. Richard (Barbara) Buckner of Clarksville, Tenn., Robert (Paige) Buckner of Lancaster, Ashley Buckner of Dalzell, Jay (Vicki) Lowder of Eastover and Russell Lowder of Paxville; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Claude Jervey Lowder; three brothers, Smith DuBose, Scott DuBose and Ernest DuBose; and one sister, Emily Rhodus.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 20, 2006, at Wedgefield Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Goff, the Rev. Bobby Fletcher, the Rev. Eddie Harrington and the Rev. Steve Miller officiating.

Burial followed at Wedgefield Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Alvin Holliday, DeVaughn Jones, Tony DuBose, Michael Drake, Claude Hendrix and John Sammons.

Honorary pallbearers were past and present deacons of Wedgefield Baptist Church and the Sunshine Girls of the Wedgefield Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Wedgefield Baptist Church, 6220 Wedgefield Road, Wedgefield, S.C. 29168.

Harold E. Thompson Sr.

Harold Eugene Thompson Sr., 87, husband of Garnet Smith Thompson, died Friday, July 15, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 19, 1917, in Manning, he was a son of the late Hugh Edward and Callie Daniels Thompson. He was a retired farmer and Korn Industries craftsman, a United States Marine Corps veteran of WWII and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Alcolu are two daughters, Brenda (Russell) Harrelson of Alcolu and Donna T. Morris of Manning; a son, Harold Eugene (Cindy) Thompson Jr. of Alcolu; three brothers, Hugh Ray Thompson of Alcolu, Murray Thompson of Sumter and Julian Thompson of Wichita Falls, Texas; three sisters, Hazel T. Boyce, Joyce T. Link and Cleo T. DuBose of Sumter; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 18, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.

Burial with military honors followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, 1780 Main Street, P.O. Box 502, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Edna E. Reynolds

Edna Earle Reynolds, 83, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel L. Reynolds and the late Essie Ardis Reynolds. Miss Reynolds was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and a retired secretary with Korn Industries.

Surviving are a brother, Dan L. Reynolds of Pinewood; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Condy Carr Reynolds, and a sister, Isabelle Mae Reynolds.

Graveside services were held Thursday, July 14, 2005, in the Reynolds Family Cemetery on Nazarene Church Road near Pinewood with the Rev. Tony Metze and the Rev. Elizabeth Platts officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 1137 Alice Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Wilson Hall School, 2801 W. Wise Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Daniel Lawson

Daniel “Danny” Lawson, age 78, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning. He was born in Clarendon County, on April 7, 1927, to the late Cleveland and Daisy Goodman Lawson. He was married to the late Mary Lee Carter Lawson House.

He was preceded in death by three children, Lizzie Mae Lawson, Mary Ellen and Jerry Lawson; four sisters, Clara Bell Jones, Esther Pearson, Shirley Gibson and Camilla Mellerson; and three brothers, Cleveland Lawson, Gene Elliott Holliday and Richard Holliday.

Loving memories will be cherished by his children, three daughters, Gertie (Robert) Riley of Sumter, Jessie R. Lawson of Summerton, and Shirley Lawson of Bronx, N.Y.; a son, Cleveland Lawson of Bronx; five stepdaughters, Diane House and Yvonne “Roxy” Terry , both of Summerton, Sindy House of Whitesville, N.C., Janice House of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lenora (Edward) Brailsford of Columbia; four stepsons, Joe (Beatrice) House of Summerton, Leroy House and Hiawatha (Glorine) House , both of Richmond, Va., Evan “Bubba” House of Summerton; three sisters, Robertha Dow of Summerton, Lee Ragin of Miami, Fla., and Shirlean Pearson of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Robert V. Holliday of Miami; nine grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was the church cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Dyson’s Home for Funerals.
