Leonard Young Sr.

BLYTHEWOOD — Homegoing services with burial for Leonard Young Sr. will be 2 p.m. Friday at Round Top Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, Columbia. Born in Richland Co. to Nick and Janie G. Young, he died December 25, 2004. Surviving are wife, Helen M. Young; children, Leonard Jr., Stanley, Ronella, Gwendolyn, Adele, Teresa, Vivian; five sisters; grandchildren.

Hazel Ferguson

LANCASTER — Miss Hazel Elizabeth “Lib” Ferguson, 88, of 201 North York Street, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2004. Miss Ferguson was born November 6, 1916, in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Mr. Hazel Ferguson and Mrs. Bess Amelia Jones Ferguson. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Miss Ferguson was a Winthrop College graduate, whose career spanned more than 37 years, primarily teaching biology at Lancaster High School where she also sponsored the Block L Club and many student activities. But she was Lancaster’s greatest booster. She loved Lancaster and its citizens, one and all, black or white, rich or poor, and they loved and respected her. She taught generations not only biology, but Veterans to read after WWII and she spent her summers life guarding and teaching swimming at the Springs Park and the City Pool. She volunteered at the Springs Hospital and the Red Cross until her health began to fail. A descendant of several of Lancaster County’s founding families, she loved history, was a fierce bridge and bingo player and was a wonderful dancer. But to her family she was a wonderful cousin and aunt, a surrogate mother and grandmother and role model.

Her family wishes to thank all of her many friends who helped her in so many ways, especially Charlotte and Joe Shaw, Sally Foster and her family, her wonderful neighbors John Sowell and Mary Lou Young, the Rehabilitation United at Springs Memorial Hospital, Dr. Kimbrell and his staff, and the nursing staff at White Oak Manor and Lifeline.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 31, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. from the graveside at the West Side Cemetery by the Rev. Wendy Hudson-Jacoby.

Miss Ferguson is survived by her cousin, Edward Ferguson of Lancaster; two nieces, Betty Shealy and her husband Tom of Kiawah Island and Amelia Cotty and her husband Bill of Columbia; five grandnieces and nephews; and eight great grandnieces and nephews. Miss Ferguson was preceded in death by a sister, Ivy Ferguson Dunlap.

Memorial contributions may be made to Katawba Valley Land Trust, c/o Lindsey Pettus, 106 East Meeting Street, Lancaster, SC 29720 or to Lifeline of Springs Hospital, 800 West Meeting Street, Lancaster, SC 29720, or Winthrop University Foundation, 301 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

LAKE CITY — Services for Earline Alford Harrison, 78, widow of Willie Harrison, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley Chapel UMC with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Kingstree. Green’s Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Cades to Johnny and Laura McCutcheon Alford, she died Dec. 27, 2004. Surviving: children, Carolyn, Glenda, Ricky, John, Jackie Harrison, Denise Montgomery; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings.

John Floyd Sr.

GABLE — Services for John William “J.W.” Floyd Sr., 69, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Stephens Funeral Home, Manning, with burial in Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Barrineau. Born in Turbeville to Carson and Lydia Robinson Floyd, he died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: wife, Marianne C. Floyd; sons, John “Bill” Jr., David Floyd; grandchildren, Brett, John Floyd.

Lillie Hodge

FLORENCE — Services for Lillie Mae “Iddie” Stukes Hodge, 94, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday (visitation 4-7 tonight) at Cain Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. A bookkeeper with Griffin Construction Company for 50 years, she died Dec. 28, 2004. Surviving: children, Betty Finley, Jackie Hodge; sister, Bernice Taylor; four grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; great and great-great-grandchildren.

Pauline Lever

LANCASTER — Mrs. Pauline Douglas Lever, age 78, died Wednesday morning, December 29, 2004. She was born July 5, 1926, in Lancaster County, the daughter of the late Heald A. Douglas and Belle Williams Douglas and was the wife of Marion Davis Lever, Jr. Mrs. Lever was a graduate of Winthrop University; she taught for 35 years in the Lancaster County School District, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster.

Mrs. Lever is survived by her husband, Marion Davis Lever, Jr. of the home, a daughter, Paula Lever Jones and her husband David of Summerville, SC, and one grandson, Stephen Douglas Jones also of Summerville, SC.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. Lever will be 2:00 p.m., Friday afternoon, December 31, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church by Rev. Chris Wingard and Rev. Sam Thomas with burial to follow in Westside City Cemetery.

Mrs. Family of Mrs. Lever will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., Thursday evening, December 30, 2004, at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC and suggest memorial contributions to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 990, Lancaster, SC 29721 or the Presbyterian Home of Summerville, 201 West 9th North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.

Born in Clarendon Co. to Sam and Rosa Johnson, she died Dec. 27, 2004. Surviving: husband, Roosevelt Miller; children, Teresa Stewart, Desiree, Rosa Miller, Nevylon Maynor; siblings, Edward, Matthew, David, Susie, Dorothy; more.

Betty Owens

BARNWELL — Services with burial for Betty Joyce Dixon Owens, 48, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Union United Methodist Church. Cave Funeral Service is in charge. Born to Harold Gill and Leverta Cave Dixon, she died December 26, 2004. Surviving are husband, Willie Owens; siblings, Varnette Bryson, Marguerette Lofton, Doris, Harold Jr. and Huley Gill, Sue Buxton, Rose and Harold Dixon.

John McLeod

CHARLESTON — Services for John Dexter McLeod, 65, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Scranton United Methodist Church, where he was a member; burial with full military honors in the church cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City. Born in Scranton to John and Eulalee Evans McLeod, he died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving are mother; brothers, Angus McLeod, Harold McLeod.

Samuel Turner

TRAVELERS REST — A graveside service for Samuel Brady Ray Turner, infant, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Grandview Memorial Gardens. The Howze Mortuary is in charge. Born to Timmy Turner and Erica Walters, he died Dec. 28, 2004.

Jeannette Patrick

WHITE ROCK — A memorial service for Jeannette Smith Patrick, 94, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel at the Lowman Home. Memorials may be made to the Lowman Home.

Mrs. Patrick, wife of the late Joe Peeler Patrick, died Monday, December 27, 2004. Born in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Roy Leslie and Lois Lewis Smith. A graduate of the College of Puget Sound in Washington , she was a longtime teacher at Spartanburg High School. She worked for the Red Cross during WW II.

She and her husband Joe were members of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin and formerly members of St. James Episcopal Church of Marrietta, Ga. They were residents of the Lowman Home for 6 years and she loved the many friends she met during those years. She was especially fond of the nurses and other caregivers.

Surviving are her daughters, Lois Richardson and her husband Pat of Barrington, Ill., and Margaret Patrick of Mountain View, Hawaii; grandson, John Richardson of Denver, Colo.; brother-in-law, Bill Patrick and his wife Carolyn of Columbia.

Jessie Scott

GREENWOOD — Services for Jessie Bell Haralson Scott, 82, widow of Carl Scott Jr., are 2 p.m. Friday (visitation 1 p.m.) at Blyth Funeral Home; burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Born in Hart Co., Ga., to John and Vera Haralson, she died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: children, Sherrill Allen, Carolyn, John, Jesse Scott, Betty Ross, Bobbie McDowell; brothers, Marvin, Thomas Haralson; 6 grandchildren; others.

Jannie Simpson

Dorothy Franklin

EUTAWVILLE — A memorial service for Dorothy “Dot” Rhode Franklin, 87, widow of Julian Franklin, will be held at a later date in Holly Hill Cemetery. Avinger Funeral Home, Holly Hill, is in charge. Born in Dorchester Co. to Dennis and Lottie Pendarvis Rhode, she died December 29, 2004. Surviving are daughter, Ann F. Garrett; sister, Daisy Cummings; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters.

Claude Williams Jr.

LUGOFF — Services for Claude “Brother” Williams Jr., 81, are 1 p.m. Friday at Church of God Evangustic Center; burial in Camden Cedar Cemetery. Brown’s Funeral Home, Camden, is in charge. Born in Marlboro Co. to Claude Sr. and Leathel Williams, he died Dec. 27, 2004. Surviving are children, Claude, Joseph Patterson, Larry, Cora Williams, Ruth Perry, Pastor Rosa Deveaux, Virginia Barker; 15 grandchildren.

Robert McHowell

LANCASTER — A Celebration of Life service for Robert H. McHowell, 74, is 11 a.m. Saturday (visitation 10 a.m.) at Van Wyck UMC with burial of the cremains in Van Wyck Cemetery. Born in Dedham, Mass., to Albert and Gertrude Rodgers McHowell, he died Dec. 28, 2004. Surviving are wife, Doris LeShane McHowell; children, Wayne, Bryan McHowell, Sandra Vaughan; brother, David McHowell; 5 grandchildren.

Marie Rasor

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Graveside service for Marie Hill Rasor, 94, formerly of Columbia S.C., will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, is in charge.

Mrs. Rasor, wife of the late Col. Sam J. Rasor, died Sunday, December 26, 2004. Born in Snelling, S.C., she was a daughter of the late George Lewis Hill and Jessie May Harley Hill. She actively worked as a Graylady while her husband served in the U.S. Army. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, served as a mentor in local nursing homes and was active in local garden clubs and First Baptist Church of Columbia.

Surviving are son, Sam J. Rasor, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Nancy R. Gutowsky of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister, Eunice Craft of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Rasor, Gordy Gutowsky, Susan R. Hymes, Jean G. Wuerch and Megan E. Geiger; and four great-grandchildren.

Tommie Jean Brown

BARNWELL — Services with burial for Tommie Jean Brown will held at 2 p.m. today at Morris Chapel Baptist Church. Lebby Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Clearwater, Fla., to Clemmon Sr. and Edna Workman Patterson, she died December 25, 2004. Surviving are her husband; two sons; two daughters; three brothers; two sisters; 19 grandchildren; aunts, uncles; other devoted relatives.
