AVERY M. HUGGINS

Services for Avery Monroe Huggins, 61, of Mullins, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2000, at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Gleen Brown officiating. Mrs. Huggins was born May 4, 1938, in Marion County, a son of the late Hoyt Monroe Huggins and the late Lucille Turbeville Huggins. Mr. Huggins was a retired businessman and was a US Navy veteran and a graduate of Mullins High School. Survivors include his wife of the home; his children, Mary Frances Cox of Mullins, Johnny Sanders of Hartsville and Dawn Elliott of Nichols and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Organ Procurement Agency, Inc., 1064 Gardner Rd., Suite 105, Charleston, S.C. 29407.

ROSA LEE HEATLEY

Services for Rosa Lee Heatley were held at 1 p.m. Saturday. April 22, 2000, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. J. D. Blue, officiating. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Heatley died Tuesday, April 18 after an illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Weston and Nancy Patterson. She was educated in the public schools of Calhoun County. She was married early in life to the late Joseph Heatley and this union was blessed with two children, one of which (Ada) preceded her in death. After moving to Hartsville, she continued her faithful discipleship in worship at Jerusalem Baptist Church and later became a founding member of Second Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Evennia Heatley of Hartsville; one brother, Julius Patterson of Ft. Motte; three granddaughters, Brenda McPherson of Maple Heights, Ohio, Chanequa (Roderick) Watson of Winston Salem, N.C. and Lenora McPhearson of Hartsville; one grandson, Julius McPherson of Hartsville; five great-grandchildren and one son-in-law, Julius McPherson of Wallace.

BESSIE O. PLUMMER

Services for Bessie Odom Plummer, 87, of Lamar, will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 26, 2000, at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in St. Paul United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Lamar. Mrs. Plummer died Monday, April 24. She was born in Darlington County and was the daughter of the late William Jake and Mildred Iseman Odom. She was the widow of Glen Plummer. Mrs. Plummer was a member of the Lamar United Methodist Church and of the Bennie-Sue Sunday School class. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. Survivors include four sons, Thomas (Catherine) Plummer of Florence, Curtis W. (Martha) Plummer of Anderson, Lyndal (Sallie) Plummer of Hartsville and Bobby R. (Mary Lou) Plummer of Tyler, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Aileen Odom Alexander of Darlington, and Mrs. Mabelle Hamilton of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials are requested to Lamar United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 555, Lamar, S.C. 29069.

RAMAN BLASINGAME

Services for Ramon R. Blasingame, 75, will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 26, 2000, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Paul Sullivan will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church. Mr. Blasingame died Monday, April 24. Born in Augusta, Ga., he was the son of the late Grover and Estelle Arquer Blasingame. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was a former deacon and head of the ushers. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 40 years of service, was a member of the Old Timers Club, served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Brown Blasingame of Hartsville; daughter Angie (Rusty) Connelly of Hartsville; two brothers, Harold Blasingame of Martinburg, W.Va., Truman Blasingame of Toccoa, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Chase Connelly and Davis Connelly.

ROCHELL REDDICK

Services for Rochell (Pete) Reddick were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2000, in Pentecostal Assembly Holiness Church. Burial was in Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Reddick died Wednesday, April 19, in Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Ervin and Rose Lee Cooley Reddick. He was educated in Lee County public schools. He was first a member of Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church and later joined the Pentecostal Assembly Holiness Church, where he was a deacon of the church. He was also an Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Irene Bryant Reddick of Bishopville; five daughters, Lottie Benjamin of Linden, N.Y., Lyla (James) Mitchell, Minnie (Johnny) Outen, Linda Reddick and Barbara B. Reddick, all of Bishopville; three sons, James Reddick and Eugene Reddick, both of Bishopville, and Elijah (Judy) Reddick of Sumter; four sisters, Ettie Bell Tate of Bishopville, Minnie (James) Cabbagestalk of Camden, Helen (Harvey) Wilson of Bethune and Shirley (Roosevelt) Scott of Rochelle, N.J.; six brothers, Andrew (Mary) Reddick of Camden, Johnny (Mary) Reddick of Washington, D.C., Thomas (Jackie) Reddick of Roselle, N.J., Richard (Magie) Reddick of Lydia, Ervin Reddick and Jessie (Betty) Reddick, both of Bishopville; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MAXINE C. SELF

Services for Maxine C. Self, 58, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Calvary Tabernacle. The Rev. Jimmy Baker officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Self died Saturday, April 22. Born in West Virigina, she was a daughter of the late Tolly and Stollie Gunnoe Cozart. Surviving are her husband, W. David Self of Hartsville; sons, Luke B. Thompson of Camden, Stacy L. Thompson of Akron, Ohio; step-sons, Timmy Self and Leroy Self, both of Hartsville; step-daughter, Linda S. McCaskell of Camden; brothers, Robert Cozart of Seaside, Ore.; sisters, Qunnie Bailey of West Virginia, Pauline Russo of New York, Corene Stinell of New Jersey, Arline Durham of Virginia; and 10 grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Clint Self; brothers, James Cozart, Clyde Cozart and Clifford Cozart; and sisters, Martha Trump and Jerry Nicely.

Graveside services for Marilyn Christine Windham Huggins, 61, of Darlington, were held at 5 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2000, in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mrs. Huggins was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Clarence B. and Sue Knotts Windham. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and avid gardener. She attended Faith Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Coley Huggins of Darlington, three daughters, Mrs. Arty James (Renee) Harrell of Ontario, Canada, Mrs. William (Christy) Tuck of Columbia and Mrs. Jeffrey (Alison) Brooks of Florence; two grandchildren, Tyler and Cole Harrell; two sisters, Ms. Rudell Webb and Mrs. Maddie Lee Hodges, both of Darlington; and one brother, Franklin “Bud” Windham of Lamar. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, SC 29204 and Faith Free Will Baptist Church, 1309 Lamar Highway, Darlington, SC 29532.

WILLIE LIGHTY, SR.

Services for Willie Lighty Sr. were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2000, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Wilbert White, pastor, officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mr. Lighty died Saturday, April 15, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Willie and Laura Wallace Lighty. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rosa Lighty of the home; three sons, two daughters and a sister; a host of grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two brothers.

LAURA A. BOAN

Services for Laura Alice Boan, 86, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2000, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home in Bishopville, with the Rev. Randy Wilson and the Rev. Hazel Mixon, officiating. Burial was in Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery near Hartsville. Mrs. Boan died Thursday, April 20. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Barney and Mary Chapman Rhodes. She was a member of Bishopville Church of God. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Miriam Hinkle of Bishopville and Mrs. Martha Corbett of Alcolu; two sons, Travis Boan of Bishopville and Jimmy Boan of Hartsville; two brothers, J. B. Rhodes and James Rhodes, both of Hartsville; 17 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene H. Boan.

ROSA LEE HEATLEY

Mrs. Rosa Lee Heatley of Hartsville died on Monday, April 18, 2000, in a Darlington Hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

Peter Bachus Jr. of Hartsville died on Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Family will receive friends at 719 S. 8th St.

GRANT S. STYER

Funeral services for Grant S. Styer, 85, who died on Wednesday, April 19, 2000, will be held Saturday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Sadler Funeral Home in Telford, Pa. The Rev. Lt. Col. Harry Gilman will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Perkasie, Pa. Norton Funeral Home of Hartsville is in charge of local arrangements. Mr. Styer was born in Montgomery County, Pa., a son of the late Alvin and Martha Swartley Styer. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Hartsville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Madaline Sturgeon Styer, Hartsville; three daughters, Mrs. Jean Moyer, Ephrata, Pa., Mrs. Marlene Gilman, Fort Belvoir, Va., and Mrs. Ruth Buch, Elverson, Pa.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Jeanette Galloway, Union; one brother, Abram Styer, Souderton, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Memorial may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 949 North Marquis Highway, Hartsville, S.C, 29550.

JOHN W. WILSON

Funeral services for John W. Wilson, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. J. L. Dutton will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Praise Temple Church or the First Baptist Church. Mr. Wilson died Wednesday, April 19, 2000. Born in Gorman, Texas, he was a son of the late James and Charlotte Kizzar Wilson. He was a member of Praise Temple Church and was retired as a civil service employee. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Laverne Poynor Wilson of Hartsville; a daughter and son -in-law, Carra and Wayne Honeycutt of Hartsville; and grandchildren, Robert Honeycutt, Beverly Honeycutt, Mary Ann Honeycutt, Christopher Honeycutt and Amy Honeycutt.

HOWARD CRANFORD

Services for E. Howard Cranford, 61, will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 22, 2000, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Lowrene Cranford and Kyle Harmon will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Cranford died on Wednesday, Apil. 19, 2000. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late W.T. and Molly Williams Cranford. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company and was a member of the Old Timers Club and the Volunteers Firemen. Surviving are his wife, Elma Winburn Cranford of Hartsville; son and his fiancee, Eddie Cranford and Kim Rouse, both of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Brad Outlaw of Hartsville; brothers, Harold Cranford of Hartsville, Gary Cranford of Patrick, and Lowrene Cranford of Cheraw; sister, Ruth C. Pearce of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, Sydney and Jamie Outlaw. He was predeceased by brothers, Glen Cranford and W.T. Cranford; and sisters, Lucille Cranford and Kate Hopkins.

ROCHELL REDDICK

Rochell Reddick, 71, of Bishopville, died on Wednesday, Apr. 19, 2000, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

FRANKLIN PETERSON
Funeral services for Franklin “Brother” Peterson were held Sunday, May 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Edward J. Squire is the pastor of the church and the Rev. Sam Sparks officiated at the services.

Mr. Peterson was born Oct. 14, 1938, in Darlington County, a son of the late Willie Dallas and Laura Holloman Peterson. He was educated in the public schools of the county and was a 1959 graduate of Butler High School. He attended Florence/Darlington Technical College where he received certification in air conditioning and refrigeration.

He was baptized at an early age at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and remained there as a faithful member all of his life. He was a member of the Deacon Board, the Willing Workers, the Senior Usher Board, Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School and also worked with many other auxiliaries in the church. He was a brother of Mt. Rona Lodge No. 348.

On May 14, 1962, he was joined in holy matrimony to the former Martha Wesley and they enjoyed 43 years of marital bliss.

Mr. Peterson was the owner and operator of Peterson’s Janitorial Service Inc. for more than 35 years. He also worked in maintenance at Farmington Apartments and J.L. Coker & Co.

Two brothers, Willie T. Peterson and Leroy McLaughlin, and a sister, Betty Parsons, preceded him in death.

His love, memory and inspiration will forever be engraved in the hearts of his loved ones; his loving wife, Martha Peterson of Hartsville; three sons, Stanley (Charmaine) Murray of Portsmouth, Va., Kenneth (Machael) Peterson of Columbia and Morris (Miranda) Sparks of Sumter; four daughters, Miriam Lenora Peterson of Hartsville, Frankie Mechelle Peterson and Cathy Rena Peterson both of Columbia, and Connie Marie Ford of Marion; three brothers, Moses Peterson and Archie (Katherine) Peterson both of Hartsville, and Leo (Jeannette) McDaniel of Philadelphia, Pa.; four sisters, Earlise (David) Bacote, Mildred Campbell, and Winnie (Jack) Arnold all of Hartsville, and Catherine (Edward) McLaughlin of Washington, D.C.; a dear and special sister in Christ, the Rev. Dr. B. Hercules Davis; his godmother, Lucille Thompson; two sisters-in-law; three aunts; six grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and very dear friends.

LUCILLE G. BYRD
Funeral services for Lucille G. Byrd, 90, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2005, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 306 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Byrd, widow of A. Ravenel Byrd, died Friday, May 27. She was born Dec. 28, 1914, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Charlie C. Griggs and Sara Elizabeth Wilkes Griggs. She attended Antioch High School where she sang in the Glee Club and played basketball on the first team. She graduated in 1923 as salutatorian of her class. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a professional nurse for more than 40 years. She was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Mary Ann McCullock Circle, PALS club and the XYZ club. During her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling, gardening and painting. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross for many years.

She is survived by three children, Judith Byrd Talbert of Hartsville, Wayne Wilkes Byrd and wife Jeane of Columbia, and Dr. Eric Ravenel Byrd and wife Lynne of Sumter. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Griggs Byrd and Margie Griggs Byrd of Hartsville, and three brothers, Bill and Ted Griggs of Hartsville and Bobby Griggs of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Larry Martin Byrd.

BAITES WINDHAM
LAMAR — Funeral services for Eugene Baites “PA” Windham, 73, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2005, at Newman Swamp United Methodist Church, with interment following in Windhamtown Family cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Edward Herlong and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Windham died Friday, May 27, at his residence in Windhamtown. He was born in the Windhamtown Community of Darlington County, son of the late Ervin T. and Ruth Howell Windham. He served his country in the U.S. Army, being stationed in Japan for 10 months. He then worked for Dupont for 19 years, and was also employed by the Darlington County Sherriff’s Office as a security officer for the Darlington County school system. Mr. Windham was also a farmer in Windhamtown who loved hunting and fishing. He loved children, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and Windhamtown, as well as visits from friends and family. He was a lifelong member of Newman Swamp United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Stokes Windham; four daughters Eugenia “Jeanie” (Van) Amerson, Sherry (David) Rollings, Tina Windham, all of Lamar, and Kathy (Carvel) Blakeney of Lugoff; two grandsons, Tim Windham and Jeff Jeffords; six granddaughters, Stephney Norris, Sabrina Coleman, Michelle Carter, Kristan Jeffords, Amanda Amerson and Alexis Blakeney; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Neil Windham and Hillary Windham; two sisters, Nellie W. Amerson and RuthAnn W. LeBase.

Mr. Windham was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Jeffords, and brothers, Franklin, Troy and Clay Windham.

Memorials are suggested to Newman Swamp United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Sherry Rollings, 937 Windhamtown Road, Lamar, SC, 29069.
