Betty Davenport

CHARLESTON — Hilda Elizabeth “Betty” Davenport, 78, died Sunday, January 2, 2005, in Cooper Hall Retirement Center. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at twelve noon in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Miss Davenport was born September 24, 1926, in Charleston, SC, to the late Isaac Harrison Davenport and Hilda Woodley Davenport. In 1940, she moved to Riverland Terrace (James Island, SC). She graduated from Memminger High School in 1943, and attended King’s Business College in Charlotte, NC.

Miss Davenport was a lifelong Methodist. While living in Charleston, she was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church on James Island, where she served on the governing board. She was also a member of the Pilot Club of Charleston, holding the offices of recording secretary and second vice president. After moving to Columbia, SC, she became an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Forest Acres.

For 48 years Miss Davenport enjoyed a distinguished career with the Citizens and Southern National Bank of SC (now Bank of America). She held various positions in Charleston, Greenville, and Columbia. From 1973 until her retirement in January of 1992, she served as executive secretary to the corporate board of C&S.

She is survived by three sisters: Florence Davenport Tuten (Mrs. Thomas Richmond Tuten Jr.) of White Rock, SC; Cornelia “Nelie” Davenport Thomas (Mrs. William Walsh Thomas Sr.) of Mt. Pleasant; and Carole Davenport Haywood (Mrs. Lowell Paul Haywood) of Paducah, KY.

Also surviving are seven nephews and nieces: Bryan Todd Haywood (Rebecca Huffaker) of Milford, OH; Scott Alan Haywood (Denise Cox) of Carterville, IL; Joy Thomas Slaughter (Gary Smith “Chuck” Slaughter) of Rock Hill, SC; Nancy Davenport Thomas of Mt. Pleasant; William W. Thomas Jr. (Robin Smith) of John’s Island, SC; Thomas R. Tuten III (Nancy Lewis) of Columbia; and Mary Thomas West (Timothy Harley West) of Mt. Pleasant.

Great nieces and nephews are Matthew Scott Haywood, Caroline Elizabeth Haywood, and Jackson Dennis Haywood of Carterville; Mikenna Lynn Haywood and Carson Scott Haywood of Milford; Charles Thomas Slaughter of Columbia; Thomas Gary Slaughter of Rock Hill; William Walsh Thomas III, Hampton Roy Thomas, and Elliott Davenport Thomas of John’s Island; Elizabeth Grace Tuten and Emily Claire Tuten of Columbia; Allison Elizabeth West and Joseph Harley West of Mt. Pleasant; and Matthew Thomas West of Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Carolina Hospice Care, 410 Mill Street, Suite 401, Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29464 or to Bethany United Methodist Church, 1853 Maybank Highway, James Island, SC 29412.

Frankie Clary

SALUDA — Frankie Louise Rushton Clary, 84, of 1078 Old Chappells Ferry Rd., died Monday, January 3, 2005, in Self-Regional Hospital in Greenwood.

Born in Saluda County, and a daughter of the late Mark Smith Rushton and the late Virginia Kate Shaw Rushton, she was the wife of the late Willie Bland “Billy” Clary. Mrs. Clary had retired from Knights Industries & Saluda Hosiery Mill and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and very proud of her family.

Surviving is one son, Jimmy S. Clary of Saluda, two daughters, Dempsey Clary Howard of Summerville and Clairendie Kate Clary Kaigler of Lexington, one brother, Shaw Rushton of Saluda, six grandchildren, Matt Howard, Lisa Smith, Terri Powell, Jason Stanley, Shawn Stanley and Grant Kaigler and six great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Rev. Tina Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Travis Park Cemetery.

Bill James

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for William Lee “Bill” James, 63, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Brad O. Davis and Rev. Robert G. Ward, with burial at Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pet’s Incorporated, P.O. Box 6394, West Columbia, SC 29171.

Bill James, husband of Jeanette James, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 3, 2005. Born in Bowling Green, KY, he was the son of the late Arnold Dink James and Marie Bledsoe James Collins. Bill was a local auto dealer for over 40 years.

Surviving, besides his wife, are sons, Billy Joe James (Kathy) of Columbia, Corky James (Wendy) of Lexington; daughters, Debbie Loftis (Richard) of Cookeville, TN, Dottie Wade of Glasgow, KY; sisters, Ann Collins of Riverdale, GA, Jewel Willing of Aiken, Peggy Pemberton of Mitchell IN, Cecile Denewith of Navajo, FL; brother, Keith James of Fayetteville, GA; six grandchildren; and one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn James.

Mr. James was predeceased by a granddaughter.

Hazel McKorell

HARTSVILLE — Graveside services for Hazel Stogner McKorell, 85, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2005, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 4, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the McKorell home, 210 Church Ave. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. McKorell, widow of Robert B. McKorell, Jr., died Monday, January 3, 2005. Born in Hartsville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Benjamin and Naomi Carter Stogner. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, and Pine & Lake Garden Club. She taught in the Bethel Community School during the war and later at Hartsville Junior High School for over 30 years. Many of her students remember her fondly. She was Miss Hartsville in 1936, a graduate of Coker College and an avid bridge player.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert B. and Perribeth McKorell, III of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Robert M. Pate of N. Augusta, SC, Meredith and Kem Dudley of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Bobby Pate, Jr., Ben Pate, Scott Pate, Elizabeth Johnson, Katie Liddle, Jedd McIntyre, Robert McIntyre.

Rev. Otis McCluney

BUFFALO — Rev. Otis O’Dell (Ikie) McCluney, age 84, widow of Margaret Wright McCluney, of 3635 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at 4:35 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Rev. McCluney was born in Chester, August 20, 1920, a son of the late John H. and Marie Yarbrough McCluney. He had retired as a Southern Baptist minister after 25 years in the ministry. He retired in 1982 from Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Campobello and was currently a member of Putman Baptist Church where he was honored as Pastor Emeritus. Rev. McCluney attended Chester High School and was a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army. Rev. McCluney was a member of the first graduating class of the Palmetto Military Academy at Ft. Jackson. He was also a former Master Sgt. with the S.C. National Guard, Chester Unit.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law: Catherine and Rick Bell of Chester, Joyce and Jerry Burgess and Ruth and Glenn Sherbert, all of Buffalo; one son and daughter-in-law: Otis O’Dell (Dale) McCluney Jr. and wife Frances of McBee; a half sister: Florene Moses of Greensboro, NC; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Putman Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

The body will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 128 Medical Science Dr., Union, SC 29379 or to Putman Baptist Church, 3692 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, SC 29321.

Ollie Shealy

COLUMBIA — Service for Ollie L. Shealy, 75, will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at 12:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park, Augusta, Ga., at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will be 11:30 at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Shealy died Sunday, January 2, 2005. Born in Aiken, he was a son of the late Ollie Lee and Evelyn Minor Shealy. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he retired as staff manager of United Insurance Company of America. He was a life member of Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge #402, a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and a notary public.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-four years, Dorothy Helen Sills Shealy; daughter, Deborah Ann Shealy of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Geri Lee Shealy Hamrick and John M. Hamrick, Jr., of Gaffney; sister, Ann Shealy Mappus of New Ellenton; brother, Carlton B. Shealy of Aiken; stepsister, Hilda Marshall of Aiken; and grandchildren, Jennifer Lee Hamrick, John M. Hamrick III and Waite C. Hamrick III.

Juliet Refo

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Juliet Lee McCreary Refo, 88, will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Samuel Catoe. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the Seekers Mission Group, and the Keenagers of Park Street Baptist Church. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Park Street Baptist Church or the charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Refo, widow of Furman Bradham Refo, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005. Born in Columbia on April 14, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Richard Ashley McCreary, Sr. and Loulie (Lula) Holley McCreary. She graduated from Columbia High School and attended Columbia Commercial College and the University of South Carolina. Her first job was at Haltiwanger’s. During World War II, she worked in the Office of the Adjutant General at Fort Jackson. She retired as a tax examiner at the Internal Revenue Service.

Mrs. Refo was a member of Park Street Baptist Church and a former member of the Tulip Garden Club.

Surviving are her loving family including daughter, Juliet (Judy) Refo McClendon of Columbia; granddaughter, Juliet (Julie) Refo McClendon of Charleston; brother, Richard Ashley McCreary, Jr., of Columbia; sister, Mrs. Thomas McSwain (Dorothy) Clayton, Sr. of Snellville, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Lydia Virginia McCreary of Columbia.

Harold Sineath

EARLY BRANCH — Mr. Harold Sineath of 22555 Pocataligo Road in Early Branch, passed away Jan. 4, 2005, at the age of 96 and one day before his 97th birthday.

Born in Colleton County on Jan. 5, 1908, he was married to the late Carrie Gibson Sineath for 57 years. He was a son of the late Haskell P. and Sennie Jackson Sineath. Following the early death of his mother, his aunt Mary Polk assisted his father with raising him and his eight siblings.

He and his wife came to Hampton County in 1938 to care for the five Murdaugh children as his Aunt Mary had done for his family. They briefly lived in Yemassee before moving to the Possum Corner area of Early Branch. For several years prior to his death, he lived in Hampton with his son Franklin, while still maintaining his home in Early Branch. He was a retired logger, farmer, and storekeeper at McTeer’s Store in Early Branch. He was the oldest living member of Sand Hill Baptist Church where he was a member of the Nick Mixson Sunday School class and the PERK group.

Survivors include his children: Mary M. Peeples of Early Branch, James Murdaugh and wife Verlie of Jacksonville, FL, Loraine M. Ferguson and husband Arnold of Beaufort, Franklin Murdaugh and wife Queenie of Hampton; daughter-in-law, Shirley Murdaugh of Early Branch; sister, Alma S. Malphrus of Columbia; a special nephew and niece, Wesley Murdaugh and wife Frances of Hilton Head and Joan Pittinger of Ridgeland. There are 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers, Eddie, George, Joe, Leland and Roy Sineath; sisters, Pearl S. Murdaugh and Maude S. Benton; son, Clifton Murdaugh; and son-in-law, Harold Peeples.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sand Hill Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Glenn Sample and Rev. Jerry Blaxton and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery near Varnville.

Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton on Wednesday eveing from 6 until 9 p.m. and before 10 a.m. on Thursday when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.

Memorials may be made to the Sand Hill Cemetery Well Fund, PO Box 863, Varnville, SC 29944 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Boyce Gunter Sr.

SALLEY — Mr. Boyce Lafayette Gunter, Sr., 73, entered into rest Thursday, January 6th, 2005.

Mr. Gunter was born in Aiken County. He was the son of the late Willie and Iva Poole Gunter. He was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served his country during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Gunter greatly enjoyed the time he spent selling peanuts for the Children’s Miracle Network Charity.

Mr. Gunter is survived by his wife of 51 years, Wanda Harmon Gunter, sons, Boyce L. Gunter, Jr. and his wife Ho Suk of Leavenworth, KS, Winford W. and his wife Vanette Gunter of Starkville, MS and Eugene F. and his wife Dorothy Gunter of Lexington, daughter, Wanette G. and her husband Eddie Rish of Wagener, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 9th from 6 to 8 p.m., Blizzard Funeral Home, 163 South Main St., Wagener, S.C. (803) 564-5333.

The Funeral Service will be Monday, January 10th at 2:00 p.m., Clinton United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jack Poole officiating. Mr. Gunter will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Clinton United Methodist Church at 333 Hollow Creek Road, Salley, SC 29137.

Florence Alexander

GREENVILLE — Florence Elizabeth Seymour Alexander, 85, of 600 Hunts Bridge Road, widow of Hugh Leslie Alexander, died January 6, 2005, at her home.

A native of New York, New York, a daughter of the late Harold Joseph and Elizabeth Ness Seymour, she had retired as a supervisor at Carolina Blouse and was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church. Mrs. Alexander was a foster mother for Greenville County for several years.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Adrienne A. and Mitch Riddle of Greenville and Penelope A. and Ben Merritt of Piedmont; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon and Dianne Alexander of Flat Rock, NC, Douglas and Bonnie Alexander of Gastonia, NC, and Hugh Jason and Ruth Ann Alexander of Columbia, SC; a brother, Russell Seymour of New Rochelle, New York; a sister, Marie Seymour of Pickens; thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Alexander was predeceased by one son, Mark Anthony Alexander, two brothers, Frank and Harold Seymour, two sisters, Helen S. Addyman and Mildred S. Marshall; and one great-grandson, Thomas Dean Cole.

Visitation will be held 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wood Mortuary.

Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Wood Mortuary, conducted by Dr. Paul Moore. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home.
