MARIE A. McCUTCHEON

Graveside services for Marie Annette McCutcheon, 75, widow of Wyman McCutcheon, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 18, 2002, at Darlington Memory Gardens Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCutcheon was born in Kenton, Ind., the daughter of the late Sam and Bernedetta Butz Butler. She was a member of St. Phillips Catholic Church in Lake City. She was the previous owner of Deluxe Cafe in Darlington.

Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Dunbar of Lamar and Karla Pierce of Lula, Ga.; one brother, two sisters, five grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee at 555 East Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

PATRICE YOUNG

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Elizabeth Patrice Young, 51, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 18, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Ms. Young died Monday, Sept. 16. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Bill L. and Jerry Davis Morris. She graduated from St. John's High School in 1969 and was a legal secretary. She was member of Darlington Moose Lodge Women's Auxiliary and was a loving mother, sister, aunt and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters, Leslie Young and Ashlyn Y.Ham, both of Darlington; her granddaughters, Jerri Bryanna Young and Elisabeth Tatum Ham; also one sister, Donna M. Rauch of Lake City.

ROBERT L. HUTCHINSON

Graveside services for Robert Lewis Hutchinson, 44, were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery, with the Rev. Keith Camahan officiating, under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Hutchinson died July 26, as the result of injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident near Fordland, Mo. He was born July 8, 1958, in Hartsville. As a young boy, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized. Being part of a military family, Robert went to several schools across the U.S. He attended Waynesville High School before moving back to Hartsville where he graduated from Hartsville High School in 1977.

While in South Carolina, Mr. Hutchinson was a construction worker employed with Kenco Insulation Company. He moved back to the St. Robert, Mo. area in 1999. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with family and friends.

Mr. Hutchinson will be greatly missed by his parents, Gary and Ruth (Huggins) Shelton of Nixa, Mo.; two sisters, Ellen Marshall of Little Rock, Calif., and Kathy Pinkston of Fairbanks, Ind.; two brothers, Steve Hutchinson of Laurinburg, N.C., and Chuck Hutchinson of Springfield, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

JANIE SMITH

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Janie Smith, 58, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, in New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Marlboro County, a daughter of the late James and Rosena Smith. She received her education in the public schools of Marlboro County and attended New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Smith of Society Hill; a sister, Rosena Miller of Hartsville; a brother, John H. Smith of Society Hill; a granddaughter, a great–grandson; an aunt, Carolina Smith of Society Hill, and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

HUGH S. BRUNSON

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Hugh S. “Ho”Brunson, 84, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 20, 2002, in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Brunson died Wednesday, Sept. 18, at his home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late James Phinney and Lillian Elise Dove Brunson. He was an accountant and owner of Daniel Lumber Company. Mr. Brunson was a long–time member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee, and was on the Board of Stewards. He also served as Sunday School treasurer for 58 years and was a member of the Asbury Men's Bible Class.

Survivors include one son, Hugh “Swint”(Lillian) Brunson Jr. of Darlington; three daughters, Anne (Ken) Jewell of Florence, Miriam McIver of Timmonsville and Rachel (Grady) Monkus of Darlington; two foster sons, Billy Wade Childers and Bobby Edwards Childers, both of Logansville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, ReneŽ Barrineau, Hugh S. Brunson III, James Rolfe Brunson, William Lawrence Brunson, Robert Jewell, John Jewell, McIver Suggs, Minna Ridenhour, Patricia White, Patrick Elliott, and Mary Dove Elliott; eight great–grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a devoted nephew, Robert Tomlinson.

Mr. Brunson was preceded in death by his wife, Minna Brunson in 1993.

REGINALD FLYNN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Reginald Jerome “Reggie”Flynn, 34, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 20, 2002, at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Flynn died Tuesday morning, Sept. 17, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Gladys Rouse Flynn and the late Alonzo Billy Flynn. He was educated in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from Mayo High School Class of 1986. He continued his education in South Carolina State University and served in the Army National Guard for three years. He was employed with Turner Broadcasting Co. when he resided in Atlanta, Ga.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys Flynn of Darlington; a brother, Alonzo Bernard Flynn of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Yulanda Michelle Flynn of Darlington; a special niece, Jada Alexis Flynn; maternal grandparents, George and Gladys Rouse of Darlington; a host of uncles, aunts and friends. He was preceded by his paternal grandparents, the Rev. Anderson and Ida Mae Flynn.

REV. MARION SMITH

Funeral services for the Rev. Marion Smith, 64, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 20, 2002, at Bible Truth Holiness Church with the Revs. Judith Luke, Terry Smith and Hazel Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

The Rev. Smith died Wednesday, Sept. 18. He was born in Darlington county, a son of the late Rev. Sim C. Smith and Mandy Elizabeth Edwards Richardson.

Surviving are his wife, Betty King Smith of Hartsville; seven sons, Tommy, Michael, Ricky, Robbie and Ronnie Smith, all of Hartsville, Terry Smith of Bennettsville and Donnie Smith of Lamar; two brothers, Wayne Smith of Hartsville and Randy Richardson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren.

LEO HENRY

Leo Henry, 48, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

The family will receive friends at the home of Reetha Mae Rogers, 106 Sambo Road, Bishopville.

ETHEL A. MANNING

LANSING, Mich. — Funeral services for Ethel A Manning, 87, will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, Sept. 20, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ernest Etheredge and Ron Pettit officiating, directed by Bythewood Funeral Home of Orangeburg. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hartsville, with local arrangements by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Manning died Thursday, Sept. 12, in Lansing, Mich. She was born in the summer of 1915 in the Bahamas. She attended Florida A&M University and then taught math at Miami High School. She was married for over 50 years to the late Rev. Hubert V. Manning, who died in 1997. He was the son of Rev. I. V. and Mrs. Fannie Manning. They both received their master's degrees from Boston University She became first lady when Dr. Manning became president of Claflin in 1956 and served as the college's chief hostess and as one of its faculty members in math and educational statistics. After retiring from the classroom, she continued as an active member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, and for a two–year term she served as president of the S.C. Chapter of the United Methodist Women, the first African American to do so.

She is survived by two daughters, June Manning Thomas and Michelle Lorraine Manning; son–in–law, Richard Thomas; sisters, Clarenda Sargent and Lenora B. Smith; sister–in–law, Gladys Braynon; grandchildren, Kembra (Thomas) Mazlomian and Ali Manning Thomas, great–grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and former students.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may go to the Hubert and Ethel Manning Endowed Scholarship Fund, Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC 29115–9970.

Pallbearers will be Ali Manning Thomas, Ronald Braynon Jr., Allen Johnson, Horace Johnson, Dudley Randall Parker, Charles Edward Sargent, Sheldon Sargent and honorary pallbearers the United Methodist Men.
