Mrs. Sybil McElveen Brown
Mrs. Sybil McElveen Brown, 87, formerly of Evergreen, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Carolina House in Wake Forest, NC.
Born August 19, 1921 in Effingham, SC she was a daughter of the late Adam Paul and Lillie Mable Johnson McElveen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Major Carl H. Brown, Sr.
Life’s adventures provided Sybil the opportunity of being a career Army wife and traveling around the world. As a believer in Jesus Christ, Sybil was passionate about missions and sharing the Gospel with others. During their time in military service, she and her husband were charter members of numerous church starts at their different duty stations. Sybil was also known for her cake decorating abilities and her love for fishing with her husband.
Sybil is survived by her sons, Carl (Carol) H. Brown, Jr. of Ketchikan, AK; Donald (Beverly) V. Brown, of Taylors, SC; J. Michael (Lynn) Brown of the South Pacific; and William (Kathy) E. Brown, of Youngsville, NC, a sister, Valeria M. Murray of St. Louis, MO and a brother, R. Raymond (Harriette) McElveen of Lexington, SC; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends beginning 12:00 Noon at Cain Funeral Home in Florence, SC, a funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in the Florence National Cemetery.

Linda Milan Broome, 65, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Born in Newberry, SC she was the daughter of Doris Gatlin of Charlotte, NC and the late Harry O Milan. She enjoyed crafting jewelry, was an avid reader and loved animals.
Surviving are her husband, Larry Broome of Cheraw, SC, a son Travis Wayne Broome of Cheraw, SC, a daughter, Cindy B. Marsh of Cheraw, SC, her mother listed above, grandchildren, Erin N. Morris of Weddington, NC and Steven G. Marsh of Cheraw, SC.
The family will receive friends 1:00 PM Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Kiser Funeral Home. A memorial will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.

Emmie Chapman Griggs, 70, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Born in Cash, SC she was a daughter of the late Russell and Elsie Thomas Chapman. She was a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, Society Hill, SC. She served on the Committee for Children's Programs in the church and taught Sunday School for many years.
Surviving are her husband, Robert E. Griggs of Society Hill, SC, sons, Kevin Griggs of Society Hill, SC, Jeffrey (Kristen) Griggs of Hartsville, SC, grandchildren, Jackson Nesmith Griggs and Margaret Emily Griggs both of Hartsville, SC, a brother, Bobby R. Chapman of Society Hill, SC, and a sister, Mary Chapman Brazell of Cheraw, SC.
The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A funeral service will be held 5:00 PM Friday, May 22, 2009 at Welsh Neck Baptist Church, Society Hill, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Alvin Roy "Tony" Quick, 60 died Sunday, May 3, 2009. Born in Bennettsville, SC he was a son of the late John Fletcher and Violet Crabb Quick. He was an employee (33 years) of Palmetto Brick. He enjoyed watching Westerns, fishing and playing poker. He was an avid Carolina Panthers and NASCAR fan.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy "Jill" Quick, sons, John Ross Quick and Thomas Alan Quick all of Cheraw, SC, a sister, Linda (Mike) Ledkins of Pensacola, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a brother, Jimmy Quick.

William David Garris, 83, died Friday, May 1, 2009. Born in Kershaw, SC he was a son of the late David A. and Bertie Lee Lyons Garris. He was the widower of Lucillie Nolan Garris and Ruby Brock Garris. He was a World War II, Army Air Corps Veteran. He was an avid fisherman and loved to hunt.
Surviving are his step-sons, Roger L. Brock Sr., Charles Nolan, Johnny Nolan all of Cheraw, SC, Robert Nolan of Ruby, SC, a step-daughter, Shirley (Jim) Montgomery of Rockingham, NC, a sister, Frances Morris of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Chris (Crystal) L. Brock of Cheraw, SC, Brent Montgomery of Rockingham, NC and great grandchildren, Clayton Brock and Cole Brock of Cheraw, SC.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, a stepdaughter, Janet Nolan and a grandchild, Roger L. Brock, Jr.

Ada Quick Chavis
Ada Quick Chavis, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Born in Bennettsville, SC she was a daughter of the late J. Clyde and Alma Grant Quick. She was the widow of Donnie E. Chavis, Sr. She was an active member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Chavis loved music and sang in the choir. She enjoyed her many friendships and visiting with people. She worked for the Marlboro County School District for 18 years. She loved her grandchildren and spent many hours enjoying time with them.
Surviving are her son, Donnie E. (Robin) Chavis, Jr., a daughter, Cheryl (John) Fisher, three grandchildren, Godfrey Fisher, Brenne Fisher and Dec Chavis all of Cheraw, SC, a sister, Bonnie McQueen of Wallace, SC.
She was preceded in death by two brother, A.J. and Otis Quick and one sister, Margaret Webb.
The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Friday, May 1, 2009 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Bennettsville, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

William Crawford Moore, Sr.
William Crawford Moore, Sr. 84, died Sunday, April 26, 2009. Born in Chesterfield, SC he was a son of the late Henry King and Gladys Bottoms Moore. He was Vice President of B.C. Moores & Sons. He was a US Air Force Veteran (First Lieutenant). He was a Founder and Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Cordele, GA and later a member of the Kiwanis Club of Cheraw. Mr. Moore was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church where he had served as a Sunday School Teacher, former Sr. Warden and Lay Reader. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and flying. Mr. Moore was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife Virginia Carolyn Ballard Moore of Cheraw, SC, a son, William Crawford Moore, Jr. of Cheraw, SC, two daughters, Nancy Moore Sowell of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Carolyn Moore Atkinson of Hartsville, SC and five grandchildren, Jamie Bennitt, Becky Moore, Katie Moore, Jency Bennitt and Josh Atkinson.
The family will receive friends 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at St. David's Episcopal Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Old St. David's Cemetery.

John Laney “White Rat” Melton, Jr.
John Laney “White Rat” Melton, Jr., 77, died Saturday, April 25, 2009 in Columbia, SC. A funeral service will be held 4:00 PM, Sunday, April 26, 2009 at Lower Macedonia Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial with honors will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church following the burial.

Mrs. Lorenda Pridgen
On April 25, 2009 Mrs. Lorenda Pridgen left her diseased body to live forever with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A celebration of praising God for her salvation and her life will be held on Tuesday, April 28th at 6 p.m. Cheraw First Baptist church. Her family will greet friends from 4 p.m-6 p.m. in the FBC Family Life Center.
Lorenda was born in Alloy, WV on 4/15/37, the second daughter of the late Woodrow and Tinnie Huddleston. She was a salutatorian at Gauley Bridge High School and upon graduation became a proud member of the US Marines. She served her country, which she loved, from 1955-1957. She worked several years in banking and finance before retiring in 1986. She was a homemaker, wife and devoted mother. Her great love for her family was enriched by the love of her Redeemer whom she faithfully served in various ministries through her church wherever she lived. She loved to study God’s word and share its truth with others teaching Sunday School for over 40 years.
Lorenda was an avid reader. She enjoyed being a fan of NASCAR and football often giving her favorites her loud counsel from her couch. One of her many talents was her crochet work which adorns the homes of many family and friends. Her secret gift was writing poetry which her family has recently discovered.
Those of her family who will miss her smile and warm hugs are her husband of 42 years Ralph, her daughter, Dottie Campbell of Cheraw, SC, her son and his wife Maj. Joe & Denise Pridgen of Ft. Rucker, AL, her step-daughter Debi Pridgen of Tampa, FL; her granddaughters Christina Pridgen of Irmo, SC, Angel Pridgen of Prattville, AL and Carolyn (Tim) Jones also of Prattville, AL, and her beloved granddog Rex. The love she shared with her family as well as her many brothers and sisters in Christ brought her great joy.
We wish to thank the church families of Westside Baptist, First Baptist & Faith Presbyterian all of Cheraw, SC for their tremendous love, prayers and support. We praise God for the care provided by the staff of Chesterfield General Hospital, Dr. Ghorra & Dr. Davis of Cheraw, SC, Dr. Rao of Florence, SC. We are especially grateful for the care given to all of us by her nurse Kaydra McCoy and the staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County.

Margaret Dean

CHESTER — Services with burial for Margaret Abrams Dean, 46, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Great Falls. Viewing is 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at King’s Funeral Home. Born in Chester Co. to Frank and Glossiel Holmes Abrams, she died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving are husband, Kenny Dean Sr.; children, Fonda, Kenny Jr., Bryan Dean; adopted daughters, Victoria, Nora McClinton; 4 siblings.

Cade Mobley

DILLON — Cade Sherwood Mobley, age 89, of Dillon, passed away at his home on Thursday morning. He was born on November 10, 1915, in Little Rock, SC, the second son of Edward Pickett and Linnie Thomas Sherwood Mobley. He graduated from Presbyterian Junior College in 1935 and was a general contractor and builder in the Dillon County area for most of his life. In 1940 he married Iris Allene Jones of Nichols. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Dillon, a Mason with the Mackey Lodge 77AFM, and an active member of the Dillon Lions Club since 1945.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Allene Jones Mobley, his sisters Frances Mobley Tate of Asheville, NC and Alice Mobley Callison of Greenwood, SC; his three daughters and one son-in-law: Betty-Sherwood M. Lee of Radford, VA; Frances Lynnette and William Berry Moody of Darlington, SC; and Laura Anne Joseph of Myrtle Beach, SC. He is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is predeceased in death by his brother, Edward Pickett Mobley, Jr. and his infant son, Cade Sherwood Mobley, Jr. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Dillon on Saturday morning, November 13, at 11:00 a.m. The family will welcome visitors at home on Friday evening from 4:30 p.m. until.

Memorial donations can be made to the SightFirstProgram at the Dillon Lions Club, PO Box 1003, Dillon, SC 29536.
