Joseph Van Goor

Joseph Frederick "Joe" Van Goor, 77, of Yankton died Saturday (June 29, 2002) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Msgr. Don Kettler officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors provided by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791.

Pallbearers are Shawn Whitney, Derek Whitney, Dennis Whitney, Dave Jerke, Ron Fesler and Carrol "Bud" Jerke.

Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

He was born Sept. 26, 1924, at LeMars, Iowa, to Frederick and Anna (Keller) Van Goor. He grew up and attended schools at LeMars. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. Following his honorary discharge from the service he returned to Yankton. On Dec. 31, 1948, he married Marjorie Biddison at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton. They lived at Yankton and he worked for Mike Imig Vending, Cody Vending and Casey Music, retiring in 1993.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed sports and games of chance. He took a special interest and pride in his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Van Goor; four sons: Stephen (Linda) Van Goor of Anchorage, Alaska; Dr. Anthony (Marilyn) Van Goor, Valdosta, Ga.; David Van Goor, Wilmington, Del.; and Joseph D. (Michelle) Van Goor, Vermillon; three daughters: Valerie (Dennis) Whitney, Sioux Falls; Lisa Van Goor, Thornton, Colo.; and Jacqueline (Dave) Jerke, Yankton; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; and two sisters: Mary Leonore Fesler, Brookings; and Marian Trebon, Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Clifford Heath

SIOUX FALLS -- Clifford Heath, 86, Sioux Falls, died Thursday (July 25, 2002) at Southridge Health Care Center, Sioux Falls.

Memorial services are at 10 a.m. Monday at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls. Burial is in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Sioux Falls.

He was born Jan. 9, 1916, at Brookings, to Clarence and Gertrude (Messerschmidt) Heath. He grew up and received his education there. He then moved to Sioux Falls and drove trucks for Willer's and John Morrell and Company. He married Adeline Vitek in Yankton, March 11, 1946. The couple lived in Sioux Falls. They later owned and operated a business in Lesterville, before returning to Sioux Falls. He then drove truck for Terrace Park and Russ Edinger before retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline; three daughters: Joann (Kenneth) Morgan, Issaquah, Wash.; Dorothy Phillips, Renton, Wash.; Jean (Thurston) Bosley, Marysville, Wash.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Heath, Huron; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Vivian Koehn

AVON -- Vivian M. Koehn, 78, Avon, died Tuesday (July 30, 2002) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Friedensberg Bible Church, rural Avon. Burial is in the Friedensberg Mennonite Cemetery.

Visitation is from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. today (Friday) at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon, followed by a prayer service.

She was born Oct. 18, 1923, in rural Dante, to Dewey and Cora (French) Vinson. She graduated from Avon High School in 1942 and then received her bachelor's degree in education in 1969 at Southern State Teacher's College in Springfield. She taught school for 35 years in rural schools in the Avon area and at Avon Public, where she taught junior high and grade four. She married Theodore Koehn May 24, 1944, at Avon. She was baptized in 1944, and became a member of the Friedensberg Bible Church. She taught Sunday School and was the Junior Superintendent of the Sunday School.

She was a member and secretary of WIM. She also was a member of TAU Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as corresponding secretary.

She will be remembered for her enjoyment of quilting, reading and walking. She loved working with children and always had a great love and concern for her family. She also enjoyed playing piano and keeping a daily journal.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore, Avon; her children: Theran (Linda), Blair, Neb.; Linda (Craig) Zachariasen, Lincoln, Neb.; Curt (Bette), Avon; Merritt (Amy), Wisner, Neb.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Herbert Vinson, Ruthton, Minn.; five sisters: Wilma Terpening, Wagner; Mary Petrik, Lebanon, Ore.; Lucille Montgomery, Baton Rouge, La.; Violet Grimme, Peoria, Ariz.; Alice Betz, Lebanon; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant son and infant granddaughter, her parents and three sisters.

Hattie Rehurek

AVON -- Hattie Rehurek, 96, Avon, died Thursday (Aug. 1, 2002) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon. Burial is in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon.

Visitation is from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon.

Leo Nedved

Leo Nedved, 87, died Wednesday (Sept. 25, 2002) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. today (Saturday) at the United Methodist Church, Tyndall, with the Rev. Arvella Palmer officiating. Burial is in the Czech National Cemetery, Tyndall.

Pallbearers are William Leiferman, Ronald Leiferman, Jeremy Leiferman, Sean Nedved, Leah Nedved and Tyler Nedved

Goglin-Kelley Funeral Homes, Tyndall, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Bon Homme County, near Tyndall, to Charles and Antonia (Pechous) Nedved. He married Marguerite Alford June 5, 1946, at Tyndall. They farmed southeast of Tyndall. She died Feb. 19, 2002.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Tyndall, the church board, the country school board, the Co-op and the Isaac Walton League. He loved hunting and fishing for many years, and he also enjoyed listening to polka music. He loved to drive around in his pickup, and he had many wonderful memories of Sunday drives with his family.

He is survived by seven children: Charlotte Nedved, Tyndall; Alan Nedved, Tyndall; Duane (Susie) Nedved, Crooks; Jerome Nedved, Tyndall; Gloria Nedved, Denver, Colo.; Richard Nedved, Tyndall; and John (Melissa) Nedved, Tyndall; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Hinzman, Salem, Ore.; Renate Alford, Sun City, Ariz.; and Ann Alford, Aurora, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one infant son, one brother and his parents.

Mary Mattson

PLATTE -- Mary Doris Mattson, 72, Platte, died Thursday (Sept. 26, 2002) after a lengthy illness with liver disease at Platte Community Hospital.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Christian Reformed Church, Platte. Burial is in the Platte Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2-5 p.m. Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. prayer service at the Christian Reformed Church, Platte.

She was born April 2, 1930, at Armour, to Curtis and June (Ferguson) Palmer. She grew up in the Armour area and attended country school. She achieved a goal when she earned her GED in 1974. She married Wilbur Mattson Dec. 23, 1946, at Vermillion. They lived in Platte where she worked as a dietary aide in the Platte Community Memorial Hospital for 22 years.

She was a member of the Platte Christian Reformed Church.

She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbur; six daughters: Patricia (Arlan) Kuipers, Platte; Ruth (Delmer) Vanden Bos, Platte; Barbara (Jim) Tucker, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Candace (Vernon) Van Dusseldorp, Platte; Ronda (Kit) Cline, Rapid City; and Sheila (Alan) Summerville, Platte; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six sisters: Goldie Boggs, Wessington; Francis Carmody, Wessington; Betty Wagner, Omaha, Neb.; Barbara Johnson, Billings, Mont.; Marlene Hoffman, Harrold; and Beverly Ingle, Pierre; three brothers: John Carmody, Wessington; Jim Palmer, Pierre; and David Palmer, Korea; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, brother and an infant grandson.

Lydia Radel

PARKSTON -- Lydia Radel, 100, died Tuesday (Oct. 1, 2002) at Avera McKennan Hospice, Sioux Falls.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Memorial Baptist Church, Parkston.

Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Friday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service and the family present from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Clements-Wiese Funeral Home, Parkston.

She was born May 29, 1902, to Carl and Elizabeth (Huether) Lang in Hutchinson County. She married Gustav Radel March 22, 1923, in the Plum Creek Baptist Church parsonage. She was a homemaker; among her many talents were cooking and baking.

Family and friends alike were blessed to partake in her many kuchens, cookies, rolls and homemade bread, all of which were her trademark.

She is survived by four children: Rosann Radel, Sioux Falls; Charlotte Radel, Sioux Falls; Gilbert (Belva) Radel, Sioux Falls; and Kenneth (Eileen) Radel, Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Luella Radel; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters: Emma Hanssen, Greenlake, Wis.; Rose Johnson, Vermillion; Clara Sampson, Vermillion; and Lillian Oschner, Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son and three grandchildren.

Bernadette Lammers

HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Bernadette M. Lammers, 65, Hartington, Neb., died Sunday (Oct. 13, 2002) at the Beverly Healthcare Center, Hartington.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with the Rev. John Pietramale officiating. Burial is in St. Michael's Cemetery, Hartington.

Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today (Tuesday), with a 2 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

She was born June 17, 1937, in Hartington, to Gerald I. and Margaret J. (Arens) Lammers. She grew up in the Fordyce area where her parents farmed. She and her parents moved into Hartington in 1974. She helped with the school lunch program at Holy Trinity for many years.

She belonged to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ladies Guild and Ministry of Praise, and to the card club. She loved taking pictures, traveling, baby-sitting and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She loved celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. Her memory was a "special gift" from God as she remembered names and dates of young and old. She enjoyed baking and cooking.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Lammers, Hartington; four aunts: Teresa Hirschman, Mary Arens, Sally Arens and Rosalia Lammers, all of Hartington; one uncle, Rudolph Lammers, Hartington; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Howard Esser

BELLA VISTA, Ark. -- Howard Clarence Esser, 81, Bella Vista, Ark., died Friday (Oct. 18, 2002) at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, Ark.

Memorial services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Hansen Funeral, Irene. Burial is in the Salem Cemetery, rural Irene.

Visitation begins one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Howard to Paul Jr. and Minnie (Christianson) Esser. He was raised and educated in Baltic. He married Helen Farley June 21, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, and lived in Detroit. He entered the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. After his discharge, they lived in Dell Rapids. He married Inez Myrand July 19, 1957, in Pipestone, Minn. He was employed by Midwest Coaches in Mankato, Minn., as superintendent of maintenance. He retired in 1977 and moved to Lakewood, Colo. He moved to Bella Vista two-and-a-half months ago from Lakewood.

He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed bird watching and golf. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0211, Denver.

He is survived by one son, Dennis (Jane) Esser, Denver; two daughters: Carol White, Lihue, Hawaii, and Donna (Mike) Anderson, Bella Vista; two sisters: Lucille Nelson, Dell Rapids, and Bernielle Anderson, Hemit, Calif.; his first wife, Helen, Sioux Falls; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Inez in 2001.

Rita Schaeffer

Rita D. Schaeffer, 59, Yankton, died Sunday (Oct. 27, 2002) at her home.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Presbyterian Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Ken Woodhams officiating. Entombment is in the Garden of Memories Cemetery Mausoleum, Yankton.

Pallbearers are Kristin Anderson, Arnie Burton, Bryan Cavin, Mark Johnson, Jason Rempfer and Lisa Rempfer.

Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

She was born April 16, 1943, in Vermillion to Edmund and Frieda (Luikens) Rempfer. She was baptized at Saron Reformed Church south of Menno. She grew up and lived on the family farm southeast of Menno. In 1961, she graduated from Irene High School. On June 25, 1966, she married Harold Schaeffer at Menno. Rita worked for Vishay/Dale Electronics in Yankton for 40 years.

She loved country music and was an avid fan, attending many concerts. She loved camping, fishing and entering contests. She loved her family and her second family, Vishay/Dale Electronics.

Survivors include her husband, Harold, Yankton; brothers Melvin (Nancy) Rempfer and James Rempfer, all of Yankton; sisters Carol (Allen) Sherman, Scottsdale, Ariz., and LouAnn (Rod) Anderson, Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
