John Patten

October 27, 1929 - October 10, 2008

Service was held:

Tuesday October 14, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.

John Patten, 78, died Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Ft. Meade Hospital after a prolonged battle with Parkinson's disease.
Visitation will be Monday from noon until 5:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and will resume at the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Father Godfrey Muwanga officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
John was born on October 27, 1929, to Georgianna (Headley) and Benjamin Patten in a sod house in Powder River County, Montana. John was a true child of the depression as he learned young in life the value of hard work and feeding your family. Throughout his life, John practiced those lessons by cultivating and harvesting a large garden. John also appreciated harvesting the gifts of nature including wild plum, chokecherry, apples, deer, antelope, fish, and wild birds.
John completed only a few months of 4th grade before putting school behind him and began earning a living at the age of 14. John worked most of his life as a hired cowboy, farmer, sheepherder, and coal miner. John worked on several ranches throughout eastern Montana and Wyoming. He worked for Greenwood Ranches in Colony, WY, for 28 years. One of his prized possessions was a fiery sorrel horse named “Snorty” given to him by his brother, Charles.
Even though he was a gentle man and a devoted pacifist, he answered the call when drafted into the Korean War and served his country with honor. In 1966, John married Leigh Early and they made their home in Belle Fourche, SD, until his death. In 1984, John and Leigh started their own small family ranch and raised commercial beef and lamb. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed supporting his children as they competed in many sports, but most importantly rodeo. John was always there to load tack and horses and to help with rodeo practice.
John is survived by wife, Leigh, Belle Fourche; three sons, Ronny (Ann), New Underwood; Barry (Diane) Ocala, FL; and Sean (Glenna) Bozeman, MT; five daughters, Kathy (Jim) Griffith Decatur, TX; Linda Steward and Rich Larson, Piedmont; Diane (Dave) Reiter, Denver, CO; Leslie (Andy) White, Boise, ID; Laura (Eric) Knothe, Bosie, ID; three brothers Charles (Maxine) Broadus, MT; Whitney, Longmont, CO; Irvine, Sturgis, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.
John is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ben and Wallace; five sisters Helen Richardson, Shirley Stuver, Beatrice Elvert, Dolly Burke , Janeth Beal ; sister in law Barb Patten..
A memorial has been established.

Pauline Hoffman

November 22, 1915 - October 9, 2008

Service was held:

Wednesday October 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.

Pauline Hoffman, 92, Whitewood, died Thursday, October 9, 2008, at the Belle Fourche Health Care Center.
Visitation will be from noon until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 14, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and will resume at Whitewood Presbyterian Church in Whitewood on Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral service.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 15, at the Whitewood Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Steve Agan officiating. Burial will be at the Whitewood Cemetery.
Pauline was born November 22, 1915, in Ashley, ND, to Daniel and Christina (Bertch) Rohrbach. At the age of 10, the family moved to South Dakota and lived in the Belle Fourche area. She attended school until the 8th grade in Belle Fourche. Pauline married Charles Ullarich. She married Al Hoffman in Whitewood on February 26, 1961. They lived in Whitewood for several years before moving to Belle Fourche.
Pauline was a member of the Whitewood Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two sons, Clifford Ullarich, Federal Way, WA, and Leo Ullarich, Apple Valley, CA; three daughters, Margaret (John) Svetcoff, Belle Fourche, Betty Green, Seattle, WA, and Dorothy Mahloch, Williston, ND; one sister, Martha Schultz, Bellingham, WA; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Al; one brother; and seven sisters.
A memorial has been established to an educational fund for her grandchildren.

Fredrick S. Hill

January 31, 1952 - October 10, 2008

Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at 2:00 p.m.

Fredrick S. "Fred" Hill, 56, Deadwood, died Friday, October 10, 2008, at David M. Dorsett Health Care in Spearfish.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery near Deadwood. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to the graveside to travel in procession to the cemetery.
Fred was born January 31, 1952, in El Monte, CA, to Robert W. and Lily (Meller) Hill. He grew up in southern California and graduated from high school in Corona, CA. He attended college at Mt. Sack. Fred moved to South Dakota in 1979 and has resided here since. Fred worked in casinos in Deadwood for several years, and for the past 5 years he has worked as a chef at First Gold.
Fred was a volunteer fireman for the Newell Fire Department for several years. He loved playing pool and was a World Champion Competitive pool player. Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a loyal Rams football fan.
He is survived by his mother, Lily Hill, Spearfish; one sister, Laura Watson, Spearfish; one niece, Brandi Smith, Sturgis; and special friends, Karla and Adam Cameron, Deadwood.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Mary Luptak

September 26, 1932 - October 9, 2008

Service was held:

Monday, October 13, 2008, at 2:30 p.m.

Mary Luptak, 76, Sturgis, died Thursday, October 9, 2008, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, October 13, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery in South Heart, ND.
Mary was born September 26, 1932, in New Hradec, ND, to Joseph and Mary (Pavlicek) Jirges. She grew up in North Dakota. Mary was married to Henry Luptak in New Hradec on June 11, 1952. They moved from Dickinson, ND, to Lemmon, SD, in 1969 where she worked at the Hospital and Nursing Home. Following Henry's death in 1990, Mary moved to Sturgis in 1991 and has resided there since.
Mary was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and belonged to circles. She was active at the Meade County Senior Citizen's Center. She loved bowling and playing cards.
She is survived by one son, Arnie (Betsy) Luptak, Sturgis; three grandchildren, Cara Luptak-Peterson (Leif) Peterson, Austin, TX, Rachel Luptak, Kansas City, MO, and Erica Luptak, Lincoln, NE; three sisters, Hattie Polensky and Beatrice Fichter, both of Kalispell, MT, and twin sister, Martha Jablonsky, Dickinson, ND; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Luptak, Dickinson, ND, and Evelyn Zinda, Billings, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A memorial has been established.

Ann Chamberlain

December 2, 1944 - October 8, 2008

Friday, October 10, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.

Ann L. Chamberlain, 63, Whitewood, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at her residence.
Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10. 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Ann was born December 2, 1944, in Providence, RI, to Arthur and Lillian (Madden) McAteer. She grew up in Rhode Island and graduated from beauty school. Ann married Patrick Chamberlain in Providence on August 14, 1967. They moved to the Black Hills area in 1970.
Ann was everyone's Mom and anyone could come to her for anything. She loved to take her Mother to Country Kitchen with her friend, Joyce, every day. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her kids where-ever they were. Ann loved to go camping; it didn't matter where, just as long as they were camping. Her kids always came first and she was their best friend.
Ann was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. She taught CCD for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Patrick Chamberlain, Whitewood; one son, Leonard (Robin) Chamberlain, Fayetteville, NC; two daughters, Mellissa Spencer, Whitewood, and Susan (Robert) Osborne, Rapid City; one brother, Arthur McAteer, Riverside, RI; one sister, Lillian Biancheri, Hiltonhead Island, SC; eight grandchildren, Tyler Spencer, Shaylen Hannah, Alisha, and Robert Jr. (RJ) Osborne, and Claryssa, Alex, Ethan, and Brady Chamberlain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Patricia, one son-in-law, Jason Spencer, and one brother, Leonard McAteer.

Mary Vandarwarka

June 18, 1923 - October 6, 2008

Luva "Mary" Vandarwarka, 85, Buffalo, SD, died Monday, October 6, 2008, at the Mott Good Samaritan Center in Mott, ND.
Following her wishes, Mary's body has been cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Mary was born Amee Johannson in Sioux City, IA, on June 18, 1923, and was adopted at 11 months old by Albert and Katheriane Mae Cady. She was raised and schooled in Camp Crook. Mary was married to William Ruona on April 28, 1941. They lived near Buffalo. She was later married to Tandy Carney. She worked as a waitress in Belle Fourche at the Watts Café. Following Tandy's death, Mary married Almond "Al" H. Vandarwarka in South Sioux City, NE, on March 3, 1971. They lived in Sioux City where Mary worked for Zenith and Agropack until her retirement in 1977. Over the next several years, they lived in Belle Fourche, Salem, OR, and moved back to Nisland in the 1990's.
She is survived by two sons, Sherman (Karen) Ruona, Canon City, CO, and Alvin (Johanna) Ruona, Buffalo, SD; two daughters, Judy (Kirk) Askin, Broadus, MT, and Jane Peddrotti, Camp Crook, SD; eight grandchildren, Lolita, Doyle, Kandi, Justin, Nicholas, TaiLynn, Shayne, and Duayne; and sixteen great-grandchildren Kathlina, Clancy, Peydon, Emma, Amanda, Kalena, Beau, Tyrell, Shyann, Brandi, Kasey, James, Anna Kate, James, Hewbert, Kole, Gracie; and two great-great-grandchildren, Julian and Alivia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, William, Tandy and Almond; one son, Dwaine, and one great-granddaughter, Tesa.

Martha Reinhardt

March 5, 1914 - October 7, 2008

Monday, October 13, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.

Martha (Albrandt) Reinhardt, 94, Sturgis, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Burial will be at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche at a later date.
Martha was born March 5, 1914, in Starbuck, WA, to Fred and Catherine (Meier) Albrandt. The family moved to Scottsbluff, NE, and then to South Dakota in 1927.
She married Robert Reinhardt on February 17, 1935, in Nisland, SD. The couple moved to Portland, OR, and returned to the Vale, SD, area in 1938. They farmed in the Vale, Newell, and Arpan areas from 1939 until 1953 when they moved to Belle Fourche. In 1968, they moved to Sturgis where Martha has resided except for a two-year period when she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Jim Sharp, in Northern Virginia.
Once Bob and Martha moved from the farm, Martha worked at Rosanna's, a ladies clothing store, and at the Medical Center; both in Belle Fourche. After moving to Sturgis, she worked at Lola's, also a ladies dress shop, and at Community Memorial Hospital.
Martha kept very busy in her retirement. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and word games. She had many friends and always seemed to have someone dropping in for coffee, cookies, and a chat.
Survivors include three daughters, Janet (Patrick) Hayes of Fairfax, VA, Jean (Jim) Sharp of Bluemont, VA, and Carol Meyer of Punta Gorda, FL; one brother, Henry Albrandt, Mose Lake, WA; two sisters, Millie (Robert) Ashley, Rapid City, and Emma (Charles) Painter, Moscow, ID; seven grandchildren, Lorri Skinner, James B. Meyer, Carole Riddle, Linda Hayes, Doug Sharp, Denell Deavers, and Barry Sharp; and two great-grandchildren, Arielle Sharp and Lorri Deavers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob in 1992; one grandson, Michael Hayes in 1995; and her siblings, John, Alex, David, Mary, and Esther (all in infancy), Rachel Phillipsen, Alex, Fred, and Victor.
A memorial has been established to Foothills Assisted Living.

Genevieve A. Isaacs

January 17, 1914 - December 8, 2008

Genevieve Amyne Isaacs, 94, died Monday, December 8, 2008, at Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care.
Visitation will be Friday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
Genevieve was born January 17, 1914, in Philip, SD, to Lloyd and Hazel (Waldorf) Harrison. When she was 6 weeks old, her parents moved to their homestead southwest of Faith. She attended grade school at Cooper #1. In 1930, Genevieve attended Business College in Rapid City.
Genevieve married Joe C. Isaacs in Sturgis on February 24, 1931. She lived on their ranch southwest of Faith her entire life. Genevieve carried the mail in the summers for 56 years. She enjoyed raising large gardens and did lots of canning.
She sewed for her family as well as for others. Her hobbies included fancy work and reading. She also enjoyed piecing quits and doing puzzles.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond (Diane) Isaacs, Faith, Richard (Barb) Isaacs, Faith, and Harold (Jean) Isaacs, Jordon, MT; seven grandchildren, Alvin, Dean, Jack, Wanda, JoDee, Jeana, and Jana; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances (Gerold) Engelen, Forest Grove, OR; and two nieces, Barb (Mark) Rutherford and Beverly (Bob) Reichard, all of Portland, OR.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe in January 2008; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial has been established to the Faith Community Action Team.

Andrew Frank Szilvasi

May 8, 1930 - December 7, 2008

Andrew Frank Szilvasi, 78, Sturgis, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A private family service will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Andy was born May 8, 1930, in Ellwood City, PA, to Frank and Elizabeth (Bodnar) Szilvasi. He attended school in Ellport, PA. Andy served in the Army and the Coast Guard. He received his honorable discharge on July 24, 1952.
Andy married Eleanor Rozanski on October 25, 1952, in Wampum, PA. They remained in Pennsylvania until he began a career with the Dept. of the Army until his retirement as Superintendent of the Black Hills National Cemetery in May of 1988.
Andy served as Mayor of Sturgis from 1989 to 1991. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and a member of Veterans of the Coast Guard. He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor, Sturgis; three daughters, Diane (Ronald) Cripps, Youngsville, LA, Cathy (Donny) Barker, Texarkana, TX, and Jeanne (Tim) Pawlowski, Sturgis; one son, Andrew T. (Shawn) Szilvasi, Pierre; nine grandchildren, Terri Brungart, Philip Cripps, Melissa Middleton, Brandon Barker, Stacy Ziegler, Tracy Barker, Maggie Pawlowski, Morgan Szilvasi, and Ethan Szilvasi; four great-grandchildren, Donovan, Callie, and Benjamin Middleton, and Ryan Brungart; one brother, George (Joan) Szilvasi, Midland, PA; two sisters, Mary Veres, Ellwood City, PA, and Sister Elizabeth Szilvasi, Akron, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret and Helen; and one great-grandson, Alexander Middleton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
