Mrs. Forrest "Hap" (Gloria J.) Larsen
Died: Mar 26, 2003

Gloria Jean Thulin, daughter of Porter and Emma (Thorvaldson) Thulin, was born March 24, 1925 in Valley Springs, SD. She attended grade school and high school in Valley Springs. Gloria later worked for Manchester Biscuit in Sioux Falls and Ronning Drug in Valley Springs.
Gloria was united in marriage with Forrest “Hap” Larsen on February 23, 1946 in Valley Springs. The couple lived their entire married life on their farm at Valley Springs. Gloria was the oldest living person baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Valley Springs. She continued to be very active in her church and ladies WELCA group. Gloria mostly enjoyed time spent with her loving family and friends. She was well known for her wonderful cooking, baking, and making her secret “hot mustard.” Gloria also enjoyed bowling.
Hap and Gloria retired from farming in 1984 and enjoyed wintering in Texas where they made many new friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Forrest "Hap" Larsen, Valley Springs, SD; two sons, Roger (Kathy) Larsen, Valley Springs, SD, Dan (Cindy) Larsen, Valley Springs, SD; one daughter, Deb (Jay) Snyder, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Aaron Larsen, Valley Springs, SD, Amber Larsen, Sioux Falls, SD, Jenny (Aaron) Jorgensen, Valley Springs, SD, Bridget (Kevin) Boese, Sioux Falls, SD, Zach Nelson, Sioux Falls, SD, Hailey Nelson, Sioux Falls, SD; one step grandson, Chris Snyder, New Prague, MN; one great granddaughter, Kennedi Jorgensen, Valley Springs, SD; brother and sisters-in-law, James "Bud" and Dorothy Larsen, Sioux Falls, SD, June Thulin, Garretson, SD; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and of host of other relatives and friends.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Claude Thulin.

Samuel Preston VerMeer
Died: Mar 26, 2003

Samuel Preston VerMeer, son of Michael and Robin VerMeer, was born on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at 2:45 PM at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. His doctor that delivered him into our world was Patricia Wirtz. The following day, he was baptized by Father Chuck Cimpl at the hospital. Sam was then airlifted to the Michigan Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI to undergo stage one of a three phase surgical procedure to reconstruct his heart. Sam died at 8:30 PM on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 from post surgical complications.
Sam was in our lives only a short period of time, yet through his brief life, Sam was able to strengthen relationships between family and friends. Sam taught us not to worry or be anxious about his future, but to enjoy the moments we had with him.

Clair W. Vosburg
Died: Mar 25, 2003

Clair Warren Vosburg, son of Clinton and Ruth (Johnson) Vosburg, was born March 7, 1921 on the family farm near Larchwood, IA. He grew up there and received his education in a nearby country school. He continued to farm with his family.
Clair was united in marriage with Jeanette Vander Werf on March 12, 1948 at Sioux Falls, SD. They farmed near Larchwood, Montrose, Sioux Falls, and Valley Springs. In 1966, Clair began working at the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Larchwood where he worked for 17 years.
Clair was a member of First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Falls. He enjoyed fishing, horses, gardening and raising chickens. Clair enjoyed sitting with family and friends to visit over a cup of coffee.

Emerson A. Bowen
Died: Mar 22, 2003

Emerson A. Bowen, son of Earl and Irene (Middlen) Bowen, was born August 21, 1917 in Lyon County, IA. As a child he moved with his family to Ellsworth, MN. He grew up there and graduated from Ellsworth High School. Emerson attended Nettleton College and Sioux Falls College in Sioux Falls, SD. He then worked at the Sioux Falls Air Base.
Emerson entered the United States Navy on March 31, 1943. He served as a Yeoman 1st Class in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II, earning a Purple Heart and Philippine Liberation Medal with one star. Following his honorable discharge on April 5, 1946, he returned to Sioux Falls and worked for the Veterans Administration.
Emerson was united in marriage with Joyce DeGrand on August 30, 1947 in Pembine, WI. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, where he worked as an auditor for the IRS. After retiring, he owned and operated a tax accounting firm for many years.
Emerson was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer from 1970-1975. He also belonged to the American Legion, the VFW, the Lion’s Club, the Masons and the Elks Lodge. He was a kind and gentle man with a unique sense of humor. He was very musical and played in a dance band in his earlier years. He also had a large collection of record albums.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Joyce, Sioux Falls, SD; one son, David Bowen and his wife, Renee, Loveland, CO; one daughter, Mary Berkness and her husband, Eric, Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Zachary and Elizabeth Bowen, Loveland, CO, Alex and Kyra Berkness, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Emerson was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edwin Bowen.

John F. Murphy
Died: Mar 19, 2003

John Francis Murphy was born to Frank and Myrtle Murphy on July 19, 1930, in Minneapolis. He grew up in St. Cloud, MN. After graduating from St. John’s Preparatory, he attended and graduated from St. John’s University at Collegeville, MN. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 as a weapons instructor in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1954. John entered the University of Minnesota Law School that fall. He married Alice DeWispelaere in 1955. They were later divorced. John took a position as Trust Officer with National Bank of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. He took over the law firm of Donley & Donley in Elk Point, South Dakota, the last week of December, 1962. John renamed the firm Donley and Murphy and practiced law for 41 years as a “small town attorney”. John served 36 years as City Attorney for Elk Point, served on the Elk Point School Board, and was instrumental in the development of the Elk Point Country Club and the organization of numerous businesses.
John married Cecelia A. Grunewaldt on September 8, 1990, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They resided in Sioux Falls, with John commuting to Elk Point to his law practice.
John was a lifelong Democrat, serving in both the House and Senate of the South Dakota Legislature. He served on the Code Commission of the Legislative Research Council, participating in the re-write of several sections of the S.D. Code, including rewriting the South Dakota insurance laws. After serving in the Legislature, John became a registered lobbyist, lobbying for over 30 years.
John enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas and the 4th of July. His 4th of July was filled with the grandeur and pageantry that included class II commercial fireworks and choreographed patriotic music. John’s Christmas was filled with thousands of lights and ornaments and enough Santa Clauses to fill the hearts of all of the friends and family he touched.
John is survived by his wife, Cecelia Grunewaldt, a son, Tim (Dawn) Murphy, and their sons, Colin and Brock, of Tea, South Dakota, a daughter, Catherine (Todd) Bird, and their children, Ashley, Michael, and Trevor, of Lawrence, Kansas. John is also survived by three nieces, Terry Egge, Betsy Kramer, and Colleen Chavarrie, and a nephew, Michael Murphy, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at St. Joseph Catholic Church following the funeral mass.

Bernice Mae Lundberg

Bernice Holtz, daughter of Herman and Eliza Holtz, was born March 2, 1905 in Oldham, SD. Bernice grew up in Sioux Falls, SD where she received her education. She graduated from Washington High School in 1924. After graduation, Bernice worked as a clerk at Will A. Beech Printing for 12 years.
Bernice was united in marriage with George R. Lundberg Sr. on July 21, 1934 in Sioux Falls. She was a homemaker and mother of two wonderful children. George preceded her in death on April 28, 1966.
Bernice was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafts, reading, crossword puzzles and watching the Minnesota Twins. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, George Lundberg Jr. and his wife, Kay, Sioux Falls, SD; a son-in-law, Richard Reid, Cass Lake, MN; three grandsons, Brett Lundberg, Minneapolis, MN, Steven Reid, Mosinee, WI, Michael Reid, Akeley, MN; two granddaughters, Brenda Lundberg, Bellingham, WA, Jennifer Reid, Fargo ND; a great-grandson, Hunter Reid, Bemidji, MN; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, George, Bernice was preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Reid, and her parents.

Robert "Bob" Tombollo

Bob Tombollo was born May 15, 1945 in Cherokee, IA. He grew up there. Following high school graduation, Bob served in the United States Navy. After his discharge he earned a business degree at Sioux Falls College.
Bob began employment with Western Airlines in 1967. He continued with the company after it was acquired by Delta Airlines. He retired in December of 2001 after 34 years of service. In retirement Bob enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are one daughter, Sarah Tedesco and her husband, John, Tampa, FL; one grandson, Nicholas Tedesco, Tampa, FL; one sister, Rose Prentice, Oklahoma City, OK; two nephews, Mike Prentice, Steve Prentice; one niece, Jennifer Whitacre; his special friends, Les and Linda Blitch-Noonan and family, Lennox, SD, Jim and Bea Maxwell and family, Ellsworth, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Sioux Falls - Joe J. Kucler, 87, 2501 S. Sherman Avenue, died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Royal C. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date, with George Boom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Joe was born the son of Andrew and Johanna (Vorhonic) Kucler on February 26, 1916 in Eveleth, MN. After graduating from Eveleth High School he turned down athletic scholarship offers from the Universities of Minnesota and Wisconsin to play amateur hockey for Minomonie, MN, Toledo, OH, and Eveleth, MN. In 1942, Joe joined the U.S. Coast Guard with his life long friend John Mariuchi. They were stationed at Baltimore and played hockey for the Coast Guard Cutters – the Baltimore entry in the Eastern Hockey League. They played Boston, Philidelphia, and New York in “The Garden”. Joe led the league in scoring, was a member of the All Star Team, and helped Baltimore win the league championship in 1942-43 and again in 1943-44. Joe shipped out in 1944 aboard the USS Mohave, a north Atlantic merchant marine escort ship and submarine chaser. He served aboard ship and in Greenland for the duration of the war. Joe was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Machinist 1st class. After the war Joe played hockey briefly for the New York Rangers minor league team in Baltimore until a knee injury prevented him from taking up the National Hockey League team’s invitation for a tryout.
With his hockey career over, Joe attended and graduated from watchmakers school in Kansas City and was united in marriage with Mary York on August 15, 1949. The couple moved to Sioux Falls where Joe worked as a watchmaker for Smith Jewelry until retiring in 1971. During their years in Sioux Falls, Joe and Mary also operated Kucler Food Concessions, serving a variety of events in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Watertown. Joe spent countless hours teaching young people to skate at Covell Lake. He also enjoyed golfing In 1996, he was honored by the Baltimore Clippers as one of the six living members of the outstanding 1942-43; 1943-44 Coast Guard hockey team.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Shirley (White) and her husband Spencer Peterson, Corvallis, OR; a grandson, Scott Peterson, Portland, OR; a granddaughter Sheila, her husband Charles Pederson, and an 8 month old great-grandson Spencer Thomas, Anniston, AL; two brothers, Andrew and Angie Kucler, and Albin and Frances, both in OH.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Tony, Leo, Bill, and Rudy; and 1 sister, Francis Hautala.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Winter Sports Department, 600 East 7th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57103 in honor of Joe Kucler.
