Arlo G. Swanson
Died: Mar 03, 2003

Arlo G. Swanson, son of Carl and Hilda (Johnson) Swanson, was born November 17, 1925 in Watertown, SD. He grew up in Revillo, SD and graduated from high school there.
Arlo was united in marriage with Elouise (Hansen) Swanson on October 22, 1946 in Sioux Falls, SD. Arlo served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Arlo was injured while stationed there and was in a Naval hospital in San Diego, CA for 11 months.
Arlo attended Nettleton and Augustana Colleges in Sioux Falls. He also took many banking courses at different colleges before his employment with Northwestern National Banks in Sioux Falls and Huron, SD. In 1961, Arlo was appointed by President John F. Kennedy and continued to serve through L.B. Johnson’s term in office as the State Director of the Farmer’s Home Administration. He then served as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture in the state of Pennsylvania before serving as the National Director of Green Thumb, INC. in Washington D.C.
Arlo was very involved with the church as a Sunday school superintendent, deacon and state director of men’s fellowship. He also loved to use his gift of music by singing in the choir as well as solos. Arlo was very instrumental in the formation and groundbreaking of several churches. He also served on the board of Evangel University.
Arlo was a member of Prairie Hills Covenant Church, the American Legion, the Gideons and was a life-member of the DAV. He enjoyed fishing, reading political and spiritual growth books and taking road trips. He especially enjoyed writing letters to congressmen, senators and presidents, just to voice his opinion and remain active in political issues.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Elouise Swanson, Sioux Falls, SD; three daughters, Arlouise Papit, Dallas, TX, Linda Day and her husband, Rick, Morgantown, WV, Rose Palmer and her husband, Stephen, Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Gregory Swanson and his wife, Beth, Richmond, VA; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Swanson and his wife, Lois, Naches, WA, Lavone Swanson and his wife, Charlene, Yakima, WA, Douglas Swanson and his wife, Pam, Yakima, WA; two sisters, Pearl Wilson, Sioux Falls, SD, Larece Nelson and her husband, Kermit, Tieton, WA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Arlo was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wallace; and one sister, Doris, in infancy.

Douglas Duane Buskohl
Died: Mar 02, 2003

Douglas Duane Buskohl, son of Delmar and Marian (Buus) Buskohl, was born October 21, 1951, in Gackle, ND. He grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, and received his education from Washington High School.
Doug was united in marriage with Joanne Hine on October 28, 1972 in Sioux Falls. Doug was a truck driver for several years before he became the owner and operator of Buskohl Home Improvements. Doug later returned to truck driving for many years as he enjoyed exploring the countryside as he so adored. In 1992, Doug was forced in to retirement due to health reasons.
Doug enjoyed drawing, the outdoors, art, football, and horseshoes. He especially enjoyed giving time to others and helping those in need.
Grateful for having shared his life are, his wife, Joanne Buskohl, Sioux Falls; two daughters, Carrie Hill and her husband, Brad, Sioux Falls, Jodie Buskohl, Sioux Falls; and one son, Robb Buskohl, Sioux Falls; mother, Marian Buskohl, Sioux Falls; two sisters, Gloria Voigt and her husband, Jim, Hartford, Pat Heesch and her husband, Lowell, Boise, ID; one son, Butch Buskohl and his wife, Marilyn, Sioux Falls; a grandson, Austin Hill (8), Sioux Falls; a granddaughter, Alyssa Hill (3), Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Doug’s love will remain in our hearts and his memory will be cherished until the day we meet again, in the Kingdom of the Lord.

Dorothy C. Westerbur
Died: Jun 21, 2003

Dorothy Cecelia Marie Meyer, daughter of Paul and Katherine (Thorstenson) Meyer, was born August 24, 1919 in Roseau, MN. She graduated from Marshall (MN) High School in 1937.
Dorothy was united in marriage with Ted Westerbur on April 14, 1938 at Granite Falls, MN. After their marriage the couple farmed near Clarkfield, MN and Havana, ND before moving to Sioux Falls in 1960. Dorothy was employed at Dixie Bake Shop for a number of years and also worked at Wendy’s in Sioux Falls for 15 years. Ted preceded her in death on November 10, 1980. In 1995 she retired and moved to Worthington, MN where she was a resident of the South Shore Care Center since January of 2003.
Grateful for having shared her life are three sons, Donald (Jan) Westerbur, St. Charles, MO, Marlin (Dixie) Westerbur, Sioux Falls, SD, Terry (Dorothy) Westerbur, Dovrey, MN; two daughters, Carol (Larry) Gorder, Worthington, MN, Kathy Bain, Baltic, SD; twelve grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Meyer, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a great grandson; five sisters; and three brothers.

Helen A. Fox
Died: Jun 18, 2003

Helen Annie Kuper, daughter of Ben and Mable (Nelson) Kuper, was born July 14, 1912 at Lake Preston, SD. The family moved to Marvin, SD where she grew up and was educated there.
Helen was united in marriage with Henry Fox on October 17, 1938 at Wilmot, SD.
They settled in Sioux Falls where she owned and operated Helen’s Cafe for several years and also owned the Snowcap Liquor and Deli for four years. She worked at Sioux Valley Hospital for five years in the Housekeeping Department, retiring in 1984.
Survivors include a brother, Lowell (Bette) Kuper, Dell Rapids, SD; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Henry in 1962; one son, Lane, in 1975; three sisters; two brothers; and her parents.

Robert Eugene Huber
Died: Jun 17, 2003

Sioux Falls - Robert Eugene Huber, 76, 4601 West Custer Lane, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Sioux Valley Hospital.
A memorial service will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 20, 2003 at First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial service on Friday at the First United Methodist Church.
Robert Eugene Huber son, of Otto and Helen (Gross) Huber, was born on April 27, 1927 in McLaughlin, SD. Robert grew up and graduated from Bowdle High School in 1945.
After graduation Robert served 2 ½ years in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Army National Guard and a pilot for the Civil Air Patrol. He received a BA degree from Westmar College and his MA degree from USD. Robert taught in various South Dakota schools for 36 years, including 20 years of coaching. He spent the summer months working in the crop hail insurance business for many years.
He was united in marriage with Romona Schaible July 20, 1948 in Bowdle, SD Romona died on October 25, 1999.
Robert was later united in marriage with Loretta Blumhardt January 20, 2001.
Robert served 2 years as president of the South Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He was a counselor at Boys State for 2 years. He was formerly a member of Sunnycrest United Methodist Church, where he has served on many boards. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, retired Teachers Association, the VFW and currently a member of First United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed model trains, traveling and was a devoted animal lover.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife. Loretta, Sioux Falls, two daughters, Roxanne Huber and her life companion, Scott Faragher, Sioux Falls, Randee Huber, Radford, VA; four stepsons, Leon (Kella) Schaible, Longwood, FL, Arlyn (Sherri) Schaible, Lakeville, MN, Donn (Pam) Schaible, Evergreen, CO, Scott (Billee) Schaible, Rapid City, SD; a brother Dale (Jeanne) Huber, Luverne, MN; four step-grandsons, and three step-granddaughters.
Robert was preceded in death by wife, Romona; and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Humane Society.

Milton R. Simons
Died: Jun 16, 2003

Milton Roland Simons, son of John R. and Hannah (Loftesness) Simons, was born October 25, 1917 at Arlington, SD. The family moved to Garretson, SD where he graduated from high school in 1935. He attended a two-year program at Augustana College and started teaching in Sinai, SD in 1939.
In 1941 Milt entered the United States Army Air Corps where he served as a bombardier instructor at Roswell, NM during World War II. Milt was united in marriage with Julia Christina Berdahl on April 10, 1943 at Santa Ana, CA. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to complete his BA at Augustana and a Masters in Education from the University of South Dakota.
He taught at Emerson Elementary from 1947 to 1952. Milt was the principal of Mark Twain Elementary School from 1952 to 1973 and of Bancroft Elementary until his retirement in 1979.
He was very active in community, church and military affairs throughout his career and retirement. He retired from the Air Force Reserves with the permanent rank of Lt. Col. He was a past Commander of American Legion Post #15, and for a number of years was its Americanism Officer and a member of the American Legion Chorus. He was also in charge of its recycling project and its Boys State transportation project for years.
A special love of Milt Simons was American Legion baseball. He was featured in a 2002 Argus Leader article demonstrating why the annual Post #15 baseball tournament was renamed the “Milt Simons Invitational” tournament.
Grateful for having shared his life are three sons, Robert (Susan), Des Moines, IA, John (Ione), Durango, CO, James (Gayle), Rapid City, SD; two daughters, Barbara (Gary) Hegarty, Grand Rapids, MN, Martha (Mark) Hofer, Eau Claire, WI; 11 grandchildren; and his sister, Ila McClure, suburban Chicago, IL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia, in 1987; his parents; and two brothers, Spencer and Dale.
Memorials may be directed to the Media Ministry of First Lutheran Church and the Milt Simons Scholarship Fund at Augustana College.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at First Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the memorial service.

Gerald "Bud" Adams
Died: Jun 12, 2003

Gerald Michael “Bud” Adams, son of Michael and Victorine (Lanners) Adams, was born September 24, 1941 on a farm near Alexandria, SD. As a child he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD where he grew up and received his education. Bud then served with the United States Marine Corps before returning to Sioux Falls.
Bud was employed at John Morrell and Company for over 35 years before retiring. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing cards at the Card Room.
Grateful for having shared his life are his life partner, Sandee Walker; his children, Kari Adams, Sioux Falls, SD, Jim Adams and his wife, Rita, Harrisburg, SD, Mark Adams and his wife, Kathy, Harrisburg, SD, Mary Nordstrom and her husband, John, Sioux Falls, SD, Barb Christophersen and her husband, Joel, Sioux Falls, SD, Terri Walker, Tea, SD, Carrie Walker, Pierre, SD; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; his sister, Pat Bishop and her husband, Tom, Sioux Falls, SD; an aunt, Mary Haney, Lancaster, CA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jeffrey D. "Rabbitt" Van Laar
Died: Jun 07, 2003

Jeff, son of Dean and Margaret (Kirkpatrick) Van Laar, was born on February 21, 1955 in Sioux Falls, SD. “Rabbitt”, as Jeff was well known, grew up and received his education in Sioux Falls. He worked as a carpenter for Dakota Kitchen & Bath in Sioux Falls. Rabbitt was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and was the proud owner of a Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide. He had recently finished an Iron Butt five day, 3600 mile, ride from Sioux Falls to Phoenix, AZ, including stops at Denver, CO and the Grand Canyon. Rabbitt was a loyal son, partner, brother, uncle and friend who was happiest when he was riding his bike and hanging out with friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are his dad, Dean Van Laar, Sioux Falls; his soul mate, Darcy Chapman, Sioux Falls; four sisters, Joni Kloes, Lisa Folkerts and her husband, Larry, Angie Van Laar and her companion, Allan Bovee, all of Sioux Falls, Sheila Van Laar, Aberdeen, SD; one brother, John Van Laar and his wife, Sara, Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
