Sonja J. "Sonnie" Bissell
Died: May 25, 2003

Sonja Joyce Anderson, daughter of Emil and Ruby (Sowles) Anderson, was born January 9, 1937 in Worthington, MN. At age four she moved with her family to Sioux Falls, SD. She attended Lowell Elementary School. Sonnie graduated from Washington High School in 1954. She then attended Augustana College.
Sonnie was united in marriage with Keith Bissell in Sioux Falls on March 23, 1957. After raising two children, she worked first at Holmstrom Insurance and later at Sperling Insurance until illness forced her retirement.
Sonnie enjoyed spending weekends at the family cabin on Lake Brant. She also enjoyed get-togethers with former bowling teammates, high school friends and Mark Twain PTA moms.
Her two grandchildren were a joy to Sonnie and she spent much time at their many activities. With a zest for life, Sonnie had an indomitable spirit. Her smile and laugh spread to all whenever they were near her.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Keith; two children, Jeanette White and her husband, Darren, Sioux Falls, SD, Brian Bissell and his friend, Missy Breck, Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren, Tanner and Haley White, Sioux Falls, SD; a brother, Don E. Anderson and family, Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Mary Molzhan, her husband, Dick and family, Hawley, PA, Dorothy Barkley, her husband, Don and family, Woodbury, MN; one brother-in-law, Dick Bissell, his wife, Lois and family, Spring Lake Park, MN; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Bissell and family, Sioux Falls, SD, Linda Philp and family, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at George Boom Funeral Home following the committal service.

Lanny D. Horr
Died: May 24, 2003

Lanny Duane Horr, son of Russell and Leona (Ridpath) Horr, was born March 6, 1935 at Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up and received his education in Sioux Falls where he attended Franklin Elementary, Whittier Junior High, and Washington High School.
Lanny entered the U.S. Navy in September 1952, where he served in the Pacific Theater during the Korean Conflict. He was an engineer’s mate and served on the U.S.S. Rendova, U.S.S. Askarti and U.S.S. Tortuga. He was honorably discharged in February 1956. He returned to Sioux Falls where he worked for Malloy Electric for a couple years.
Lanny was united in marriage with Wava Greenough on March 1, 1957, at Sioux Falls, SD.
They moved to Seattle Washington where he attended Seattle Dental Institute in 1959, where he learned to be a Dental Technician. He began working for Harrison Dental Lab in Seattle, WA where he worked from 1960 to 1981 when he moved back to Sioux Falls.
Lanny was united in marriage with Marian E. (Olson) Bachman on June 26, 1982, at Brandon, SD. They settled in Sioux Falls where they have lived since.
In May of 1983, Lanny began Lan’ s Dental Lab in which he has operated until March 2003 when he retired due to his health.
He is a member of Brandon Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #15, and Rambling Pheasants RV Club. He was quite the handyman and enjoyed fixing and doing projects around their home. They loved to travel in their RV and all the wonderful people and places they encountered along the way. They enjoyed snow birding to Mesa, Arizona during the winter months.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marian; two step sons, Tony Bachman, his wife, Stacey and her children Joe and Tara Chambers, Tim Bachman, his wife, Teresa and their children, Stephanie and Jacob, all of Sioux Falls, SD; a son, Duane Horr and his daughter, Crystal, of Washington; a daughter, Joli Scott, her husband, Billy and their children, Bailey and Cody, of Washington; his mother, Leona Horr, Sioux Falls, SD; his uncle, Frank Howard, Brandon, SD; a very special companion, ZuZu, their Long Haired Dachshund; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell; and a brother, Roger Horr.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for refreshments and fellowship at Brandon Lutheran Church following the funeral service and prior to leaving for the committal service.

Cora L. Nelson
Died: Jul 28, 2003

Cora Lillian Pederson, daughter of John and Belle (Larson) Pederson, was born June 21, 1910 in Canton, SD. As a child she moved with her family to a farm east of Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from 8th grade at East Sioux School.
Cora was united in marriage with Olof Emanuel Nelson in Yankton, SD on June 28, 1930. The couple lived in the Sioux Falls area and eventually moved into Sioux Falls. She worked as a baker at several Sioux Falls bakeries through the years. She later worked as a baker at Augustana College before retiring in 1994 after over 30 years of service. She also worked at the Sioux Falls Arena from 1989 to 1997 and for the Sioux Falls Canaries from 1994 to 1999.
Cora was a 67-year member of East Side Lutheran Church.
Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Shirley Joslyn, Brooklyn Park, MN, Beverly Bowen, Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Nelson, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Olof, on December 20, 1971; a son, Richard; two granddaughters, Mary Beth Nelson, Nancy Nelson; a brother, Art Pederson; three sisters, Opal Jacobson, Inga Benning, Mabel Pederson; a son-in-law, James Joslyn; and a daughter-in-law, Gretchen Nelson.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at East Side Lutheran Church following the committal service.

Carolyn Jean Larson

Carolyn Jean Larson, daughter of Orval and Lois (Helder) Larson, was born January 9, 1956 in Sioux Falls, SD. She lived with her parents in Harrisburg, SD. She later lived at Redfield, Custer and Brookings, SD.
Grateful for having shared her life are her parents, Orval and Lois Larson, Harrisburg, SD; two sisters, Cheryl Twedt and her husband, Greg, Larchwood, IA, Janine Menholt and her husband, Harvey, Harrisburg, SD; one brother, Glen Larson and his wife, Jackie, Canton, SD; seven nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Olaus and Gena Larson and Kenneth and Nettie Helder.

Leland W. "Shorty" Baumgard
Died: Jul 19, 2003

Leland Wayne “Shorty” Baumgard, son of Lewis and Clara (Bayerkohler) Baumgard, was born March 31, 1923 at Minneapolis, MN. He was raised by Lewis and Selma Baumgard. He grew up and received his education in the Southwest Minnesota area.
Leland was united in marriage with Scharmaine G. “Shirley” Schneider on November 27, 1943 at Canton, SD. They settled in Sioux Falls, SD. Leland entered the U.S. Army in 1945. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII before his honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to Sioux Falls and worked at John Morrell and Company for 16 years. Leland then entered the roofing business. He owned and operated Newlin Roofing from 1960 to 1990. His wife, Shirley, died January 30, 2000.
Leland was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as an elder and drove bus for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #15, John M. Bliss V.F.W. Post #628, the Izaak Walton League, the Arbor Day Association and the Multiple Housing Association. He was also a 25-year member of the M-2 Program.
Over the years, Leland and Shirley opened their home and hearts as foster parents to many children in need of care. They always had a pot of coffee on and loved to share conversation and lots of laughter with visitors, family and foster children. Leland also enjoyed deer hunting, camping, and traveling.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, David Baumgard, Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters, Rose McGaha and her husband, Charles, Sioux Falls, SD, Dawnette Narveson and her husband, Mark, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Robinette Hoffman, Oak Ridge, TN, Jamie Breuer and her husband, Paul, Sioux Falls, SD, Shannon Baumgard, Sioux Falls, SD, Lisa Baumgard, Sioux Falls, SD, David Baumgard Jr. and his wife, Julie, Tea, SD, Roger Peters and his wife, Sabrina, Pipestone, MN; 10 great-grandchildren, Chuck, Scott, Greg, Lacey, Zack, Molly, Philip, Dylan, Cody, and Derek; his special companion, “Scuffy”; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, Leland was preceded in death by his parents.

Betty Ann Buckley
Died: Jul 17, 2003

Betty Ann Buchholtz, daughter of Fred and Alzeda (Marshall) Buchholtz, was born October 30, 1919 in Elkton, SD. She was united in marriage with Vince C. Buckley on September 4, 1937. They lived for many years in Marshall, MN before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1954.
Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kathy Heither and her husband, Warren, Sioux Falls, SD, Pat Nedved and her husband, Bob, Liberty, MO, Judy Todd and her husband, Larry, Eden Prairie, MN; seven grandchildren, Barb, Lynn, Greg, Debbie, Angie, Jon and Becky; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Vince, on January 5, 1991; one son, Jerome, on October 2, 1998; and her parents.
Blessed be her memory.

Charlotte J. Monrad
Died: Jul 15, 2003

Charlotte Jean Ekle, daughter of Charles and Ollie (Gubbrud) Ekle, was born May 3, 1924 at Canton, SD. She grew up and was educated there graduating from Canton High School in 1942.
Charlotte was united in marriage with Donald L. Monrad on July 1, 1944 at Canton, SD. The couple farmed until 1951 when they moved to Sioux Falls. She loved being a homemaker for their six children. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and embroidering at home and at ladies circle. After 51 years of marriage her husband, Donald, passed away on February 5, 1996. Following his death, she lived at Dow Rummel Village, Knof Living Center, and Good Samaritan Village. Everywhere she lived she is known for her love of music and beautiful organ playing.
She was a member of Canton Lutheran Church and Hope Lutheran Church. She also was a member of the Senior Citizen Center.
Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, Donald Monrad and his wife, Joyce, Sioux Falls, SD, Terry Monrad, Denver, CO; four daughters, Cynthia Dissing and her husband, Stan, Sioux Falls, SD, Linda Warren and her husband, Jim, Colorado Springs, CO, Nancy Brandt and her husband, Gary, Beaver Creek, MN, Chari Porter and her husband, Erik, Edina, MN; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Charles Ekle and his wife, Carol, Lyle, MN; three sisters, Angeline Dolezal, Stanwood, WA, Zona McCormick and her husband, Clyde “Bud”, Ogden, IA, Florence Albert and her husband, Kenny, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and one grandson, Travis Monrad.
