Marjorie May Miller

Marjorie May Miller, 81, Lead, formerly of Tonawanda, N.Y., died Friday, Aug.18, 2006, at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital.
Graveside services will be at White Chapel Memorial Park, Amherst, NY, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006.
Memorial services will be held in Lead at a later date.
Marjorie was born January 11, 1925, to Herbert and May (Forbes) Preston in Youngstown, NY. On April 5, 1945, she married Robert Elmer Miller. They had one son, Robert Herbert Miller, born January 21, 1946, who died April 28, 1967 in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam serving his country.
Survivors include two nephews, Donald K. (Joanne) Miller, Grayson, GA, James Preston, Homestead, FL; three nieces, Kathleen (Ross Bryant) Preston, Lead, SD, Nancy Preston, Ft. Bragg, CA, Mary (Mike) Hurd, Granbury, TX; numerous grand nieces, grand nephews, great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, husband, and son.
Local arrangements are Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D. and with Dohn Funeral Home, Inc., 4614 Main Street, Synder, N.Y.

William A. Carlstrom

William Andrew Carlstrom, 80, lifelong resident of Spearfish, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 6-8 p.m. at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the United Methodist Church, Spearfish, with Pastor Kip Roozen officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery, Spearfish.
A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Church, Spearfish.
Bill was born Nov. 5, 1923, on the Carlstrom Homestead east of Spearfish to Richard and Daisy (Stannus) Carlstrom. He attended Upper False Bottom School one year and then attended school in Spearfish graduating in 1942. He attended Black Hills Teachers College one quarter, where he played football on a 12 man squad. On April 4, 1943, he married Jane Katherine Holmlund at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. They lived on the Carlstrom ranch most of their married life.
He worked for Clarence Riggs at 70 Flats nailing grain doors and at the Sugar Beet Factory in Belle Fourche prior to establishing the Carlstrom Grade A dairy operation that he continued for 43 years. He was one of the first members of the Black Hills Milk Producers, active in the Farm Bureau, a member of the Snappers Club and was a 4-H leader for several years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, reading westerns and watching television. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jane, Spearfish; two sons, Robert (Carmen) Carlstrom, Kingsport, Tenn., and Richard (Gwen) Carlstrom, Spearfish; four daughters, Linda Benning, Arlington, Va., Dee (Steve) Riss, Gillette, Wyo., Arla (Bob) Larson, Spearfish, and Lana (Brad) Williams, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren, Scott Benning, Belinda Coulter, Chris Carlstrom, Brian Carlstrom, Keith Riss, Justin Riss, Wendy Crooks, Nick Larson, Brandon Williams, Jordon Williams, Melissa Currier and Trisha Byrne; six great-grandchildren, Sage Riss, Harrison Riss, Andrew Crooks, Alexis Crooks, Tyler Benning, and Lydia Coulter; one brother, Albert (Mary) Carlstrom, Spearfish; two brothers-in-law, Bruce (Pat) Holmlund, Delta, Colo., and Jerry (Jan) Holmlund, Rancho Mirage, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Daisy Carlstrom.

Dewalea Alsup

Dewalea Alsup, 50, loving wife and mother, died peacefully Monday, May 22, 2006, at her home in Spearfish.
Dewalea was born June 28, 1955, in Sulphur Springs, Texas to Harold Glen and Bobbie Joyce (Choate) Morris. She grew up and attended schools in Texas before moving with her family to Evergreen, Colo., in 1963. Dewalea graduated from Evergreen High School in 1973, then attended the University of Colorado. She graduated with a bachelor of music degree. Dewalea married John Alsup, Sept. 1, 1979, in Denver, Colo. They made their home in Boulder, Colo., where their son Daniel was born. In 1983, they moved to Jackson Hole, Wyo., where their daughter Kelly was born. Dewalea played the lead in "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" at the Jackson Hole Play House. In l985, the family moved to Big Piney, Wyo., where they lived until 1988, when they moved to Laramie, Wyo., where Dewalea finished her bachelor of music in education degree at the University of Wyoming. She also worked for the Albany County school system as a teacher and was the music coordinator for the Newman Center. Dewalea appeared as the lead in a number of productions at Wyoming Territorial Park. In 1995, they moved to North Carolina where she taught at the Avery County schools. She played the leading role in "Brigadoon" in Professional Theater. In 1997 they moved to Spearfish. She worked at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church as music coordinator for six years. She had numerous leads in productions at the Matthews Opera House, the lead in the Sturgis Production of "Joseph, " the alto solo in Mozart's "Requiem" with the Black Hills Symphony, and the lead in the Black Hills Symphony New Year's Eve production of "Oedipus Tex." Other highlights of her life include singing at Carnegie Hall in November 2004; singing solo with the Black Hills State University Choir in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Ireland; being a main performer at the opening of Claire and Josef Meier Hall; and being a member of the Black Hills State University Faculty Quartet. Dewalea sang the National Anthem for the opening ceremonies of Relay For Life. She played the organ, handbells, guitar, and other various instruments. Music and acting were her life and she was proud of her Native American heritage.
Dewalea is survived by her husband, John Alsup, of Spearfish; her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Ashley Alsup, of Summerset; daughter, Kelly Alsup, of Rapid City; brother, Harold "Hal" Morris and his wife Betsy Marberry, of Lakewood, Colo.; and niece and nephew, Susan and Tom Morris.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2006, at our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Spearfish with the Rev. Kent Stillson officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish. Visitation will be from 3 - 7 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish. The family requests no flowers and that memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Dakota.

Ferman LeRoy Clarkson

Ferman LeRoy Clarkson, 88, of Belle Fourche, died Monday, October 16, at his home.
Roy was born to Ferman Mason and Maud (Moriarty) Clarkson on Jan. 1, 1918 at his parents' Bull Creek ranch in South Cave Hills, Harding County.
He attended grade school in rural Harding County, Bowman, Spearfish, Ingersoll School, and graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1937. He attended Colorado State University and graduated from the University of Wyoming.
In May of 1942 he enlisted in the Navy, attended midshipman's school and became a Navy Gunfire Officer. He landed with three invasions at North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy in which he earned a Silver Star in Sicily and a Bronze Star in Normandy.
Following the war he moved with his wife, Frances Tanner, to the family sheep ranch north of Belle Fourche. To this union four children were born; Carol Ann, Kay Dolores, Mary Frances, and Ferman Mason.
In 1961, Roy married Norma Newman. He served 36 years as chairman of the board for the Bank of Belle Fourche, which later became part of Pioneer Bank and Trust.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Florence Davis, brothers Maurice and Herbert Clarkson. He is survived by his daughters Carol Eklund, Kay (Richard) Musil, both of Phoenix and Mary (Kevin) Buchholz, Belle Fourche; son Ferman (Barbara) Clarkson, of Tucson; 12 grandchildren Derrick, Thad, Scott, and Hilary Buchholz; Erik Eklund; Aaron (Christine) Musil,
Katherine (Derek) Mitzel, CJ and Ian Musil; Sarah, David, and Megan Clarkson; seven great grandchildren Milton, Saxon, and Anton Buchholz; Matt, Joe and Isaac Musil, and Ty Mitzel. Also surviving are his sister-in- law Dottie Clarkson and brother-in-law Arthur Davis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Tri State Museum Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 19 and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Belle Fourche with Reverend Buck Malone Officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche with the Belle Fourche Honor Guard performing military honors.

Russell Lewis Burton

Russell Lewis Burton died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007 at the age of 74. Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chandler, Ariz. with Pastor Martin Spaude officiating.
He was born Aug. 9, 1932, to Audrey and Stan Burton in Pierre. He was baptized in 1940. He enlisted in the army and was honorably discharged Nov. 27, 1952.
On July 8, 1978 he was married to Adeline Sailor. They made their home in Lead where he worked for the Homestake Mining Company for nearly 35 years. He always considered Lead his home town. They also lived in Vale before moving to Sun Lake, Ariz. in 1992 Russell confirmed his faith in the Lutheran Church on Nov. 30, 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Adeline; two sons, Rodney and Arnie and stepchildren, Terry Sailor, JoAnn Sailor, Connie Burgher and Donna Sloan; five sisters, Betty Couglin, Doloros Leistra, Marlene Goglin, Sandy Price and Karen McBryer; 11 grandchildren nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Orville Ott

Funeral services for Orville Ott, 90, will be Friday, Aug. 25, 2006 at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Groton, South Dakota. Burial will follow at the Groton Union cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the funeral chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and will continue prior to services on Friday.
Orville passed away Aug.18, 2006, in Spearfish, South Dakota after a brief illness.
Orville Conrad Ott was born October 8, 1915, in Stratford, SD to John and Frieda (Stange) Ott. Orville graduated from Groton High School in 1933 and later married Marcella Van Riper on Dec. 10, 1939. The couple lived on a farm west of Verdon, South Dakota for over 40 years, later moving into Groton, South Dakota in 1975. Orville was a successful wheat farmer and insurance agent who loved to travel and drive "nice cars, " especially Corvettes. He was an innovator in home electronics, having one of the first air conditioners and television sets (both black and white and color) in Brown County. Orville retired to Sarasota, Florida where he lived until 1998. Later, he lived in Aberdeen, Groton, and finally Spearfish at the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Center.
During Orville's life, he was involved with the Brown County Democrats, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ferney, and St. John's Lutheran Church in Groton. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Orville was preceded in death by his father John Ott, his mother Freida Ott, brother Clifford Ott, brother Kenneth Ott, wife Marcella Ott, and infant daughter Gloria Gay Ott.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son and daughter-in-law Mel and Shirley Ott of Merritt Island, Florida; his son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Bonnie Ott of Rochester, Minnesota; his daughter and son-in-law Gary and Anita Voss of Andover, South Dakota; and his daughter and son-in-law Steve and Donna Job of Spearfish.
Orville also had 12 grandchildren, including Stephanie (Ott) Schwartzberg, Stacy (Ott) Kamp, Randy Ott, Daniel Ott, Michael Ott, Jon Voss, Sheri (Voss) Vanderwal, Jeff Voss, Tammy (Voss) Vig, Joshua Job, Jenessa Job, and JeNae Marcella Job. Orville had 14 great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be Jon Voss, Josh Job, Jeff Voss, Dan Ott, Mike Ott and Randy Ott.

Robert Dean "Spud" Adams

Robert Dean "Spud" Adams, 62, Newell, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007 at the Spearfish Regional Health Care Center.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and resumes at 8 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday Oct. 6, 2007 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Sean Carney officiating. Burial follows at the Hope cemetery near Newell.
Spud was born Aug. 21, 1945, at Sturgis, to Alex and Helen (Ulrich) Adams. He married Marjorie Wood on Nov. 14, 1964. They were in the dairy business in Newell with his brother in law, Norman Wood for 20 years.
They moved to Newell in 1987 and Spud worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation for 10 years. He was employed by Dalcam, where he was delivering bulk fuel, at the time his death.
Spud was a member of the Newell Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He was also a member of the city council and had served as the Mayor of Newell.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a former youth softball coach in Newell.
Survivors include his four sons; Donald (Ramona) Adams, Newell, Ronald Adams, Cheyenne, Wyo., Jerry Adams, Jackson Hole, Wyo., Dwayne (Ruth) Adams, Buffalo, S.D.; grandchildren, Kayla and Tyler Adams, Wylie and Whytlie Adams, Abbie, Megan and Sam Adams; his mother, Helen Adams, Spearfish; brothers Danny (Hazel) Adams, Spearfish; Rick (Carolyn) Adams, Vale; sister-in-law, Sherri Adams, Spearfish; brother-in-law, Bjorn Gloppen, Coon Rapids, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alex Adams, sister Beverly Gloppen and brother Terry Adams.
A memorial has been established to the Newell Volunteer Fire Department.

William (Fred) Albrecht

William (Fred) Albrecht passed away on Tuesday June 5, 2007 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital at Fort Meade. He was 85-years-old.
A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. Friday June 8, 2007 at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating, full military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Fred was born on Feb. 4, 1922 in Gallatin, Mo., to John and Leora Albrecht. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to October 1945 in England with the Eighth Army Air Corps, B-17 Bomber, 1st Air Division. He was awarded five bronze stars for Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Ardennes and Rhineland.
After discharge from the military, Fred attended Southwest Missouri State College and graduated as an electrical engineer. Fred devoted his career to the development and construction of electric and telephone facilities and in the design of telecommunication systems. In 1962, he was a field engineer for the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) for North and South Dakota. In 1978, he was transferred to REA Headquarters in Washington DC where he served as Director of various departments for the remainder of his career. He was instrumental in the design and development of many REA projects. He was awarded the Department of Agriculture Certificate of Merit for "The development and codification of regulations governing activities of telecommunication facilities and services." He retired in 1996 and has enjoyed retirement in Spearfish.
Happy to have shared in his life are his wife Evelyn Albrecht, Spearfish and her children Alice and Randy Wright, Pierre; Larry and Beverly Volek, Olathe, Kan.; Mike and Dixie Volek, Highmore, S.D.; Susan and John Reiffenberger, Sturgis; six brothers and sisters: Elizabeth Anderson, Elsberry, Mo.; George Albrecht, Carey, Ohio; JD Albrecht, Fall Creek, Wis.; Jetty Keathly, Vilona, Ark.; Marion Albrecht, Jamesport, Mo.; Martha Tucker, St. Joseph, Mo.; numerous grand children, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his sisters Alma Albrecht, Melba Robinson, Thelma Plowman and his brother LeRoy Albrecht.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the South Dakota Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of the Black Hills Funeral Home of Sturgis.
