Lyle W. Johnson

May 11, 1923 - November 9, 2008

Friday, November 14, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.

Lyle W. Johnson, 85, Sturgis, died Sunday, November 9, 2008, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Committal services will be held on Friday, November 14, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Lyle was born May 11, 1923, at Snoma, SD, to Walter G. & Byrdie O. Johnson. He grew up in the Vale area and graduated from Vale High School in 1942. He joined the Merchant Marines attending the MM Academy in Kings Point, Long Island, New York. After a tour at sea, he joined the army and became a paratrooper with the 503rd Paratroop Infantry with action in the Pacific with combat jumps in New Guinea and on Corregidor. He joined the 11th Airborne in the occupation of Japan and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He married Dorothy Jane Buchanan in August 1947 in Montevideo, MN, and together they had 2 sons and 1 daughter. He owned a service station in Sturgis until April 1953 at which time he opened a large volume service station in Rapid City which was, in 1960, incorporated into Eddies Tire & Glass. While in Rapid City, he joined a group that brought Little League to the Black Hills. He was instrumental in establishing the Westminster Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. In 1961, he entered the insurance field and became a general agent. In 1969, he built and operated a restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA, he had a Ford dealership in Columbia City, IN, and built a 110 unit mobile home park in Kendallville, IN. In 1976, he sold the mobile home park and semi-retired to Montevideo, MN, to pursue his interest in golf and fishing. In October 1995, he and Dorothy returned to Sturgis. Lyle was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Sturgis, a 50 year member of the consistory, a 55 year and life member of the Elks Lodge, a 50 year member of the Naja Shrine and life contributing member of the Children’s Hospital. After moving back to Sturgis, he became a member of the Kiwanis Club and was instrumental in establishing and managing the Kiwanis Food Pantry.
Suvivors include two sons, Will Johnson and wife, Theresa, of Rock Springs, WY, and Steve Johnson and wife, Debi, of Plymouth, MI; a daughter, Jo Anne Lee of Huntington Beach, CA; one sister, Veora Baldwin and husband, Herb, of Sturgis and Yuma, AZ. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; and his mother and father.

Ervin "Andy" Anderson

December 28, 1923 - November 7, 2008

Service was held:

Monday, November10, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Ervin"Andy" Emmanuel Anderson (84) a long time resident of Sturgis, SD passed away November 7th at Rapid City Regional Hospital after losing a battle with cancer. He was born December 28th,1923 to Arvid and Ellen Anderson at Howard, SD. Ervin served at sea with the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945 as a Gunners Mate. He said he was never seasick!
Andy was united in marriage to Evelyn Flanagan on July 19th, 1947 in Alexandria, South Dakota. Together they raised three children, Karen Husband (Tom) of Johnson Siding, SD., Alan Anderson (Susan) of Rapid City, SD., and Roger Anderson (Dawn) of Longmont, CO. He is survived by Evelyn, his wife of 61 years, his children, 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and two pretty good grandchildren. He is preceded in passing by his parents, his three sisters and brother, and his K9 buddy, FA Bart.
Visitation will be from 12 to 8 on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Home in Sturgis. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Monday, November 10th at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis. Internment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.

Rawleigh Edwin Brennick

April 11, 1937 - December 28, 2008

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.

Rawleigh was born April 11, 1937 at Benkelman, NE, to Harry and Viola (Ocker) Brennick. He moved to Hastings as a small child where he graduated from high school. He graduated from Hastings College with a degree in Business Administration.
Rawleigh served in the US Army during the Cold War. He was recalled during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Rawleigh married Mryna Willerton on June 5, 1960 at North Platte, NE.
Rawleigh was in the active reserves and was called back to the Army after their marriage.
Rawleigh served his country honorably and after his discharge he worked for the Sherwin Williams Company in Yankton. Later, he was hired by the Yankton Savings And Loan Association where he worked for the next 26 years. He returned to his home shop where he hired out as a machinist, welder, fabricator and production manager for local companies and individuals. In his spare time he enjoyed farming, the fine arts, politics, hunting, good dogs and fishing and most importantly spending time with his family.
He enjoyed re storing antique cars and had a collection of Hudson automobiles.
Rawleigh was a lifelong member of the NRA, and former member of local civic organizations. He was a lifelong member of the Republican Party and couldn’t spell Democrat, although, he always appreciated their friendship and humor.
Rawleigh Edwin Brennick, 71, Yankton, died Sunday, December 28, 2008, at his home in Yankton.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the Christ Church, Episcopal in Yankton with Father James Pearson officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Silver City Cemetery near Silver City, South Dakota.
Survivors include his wife, Myrna Brennick, Yankton; one son, Randy (Kam) Brennick, Sturgis, SD; one daughter, Jennifer (Gregg) Piehl, Rogers, MN; also four grandchildren, Abbey and Logan Brennick and Elizabeth and Andrew Piehl.
Survivors also include several cousins and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials have been established to Avera Sacred Heart Hospice, Lewis and Clark Boy Scout Camp, Kaleidoscope Charter School of Otsego Minn.

Kristin Szentimrey

January 19, 1943 - December 23, 2008

Service was held:

Kristin (Hamblet) Szentimrey, died December 23, 2008 in Pahrump, NV, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born January 19, 1943, in Sturgis to Louise and Tracy Hamblet Sr.
She married Bryan Hausman and to this union four children were born.
She later married Al Szentimrey.
She was preceded in death by her father Tracy Hamblet.
Survivors include her children, Mark Hausman, Tina Brown and Stacy Mitchell of Spokane, WA, Barb Overton, Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren; her mother Louise Rogers, Sturgis, SD; two brothers, Tracy Hamblet, Rapid City, SD, Jeff Rogers, Seattle, WA; two sisters, Vicki Forrest, Houston, TX, Cindy Townsend, Sturgis; three nieces, three nephews, Bryan Hausman, and Al Szentimrey.
Private burial services will be at a later date.

Frances "Toni" Haley

July 29, 1920 - December 21, 2008

Friday, December 26, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.

Frances Antonia "Toni" Haley, 88, Sturgis, died Sunday, December 21, 2008, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A wake and rosary begins at 7:00 p.m.
Burial with military honors will be at 9:00 a.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the Cemetery.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2008, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating.
Toni was born July 29, 1920, at Marcus, SD, to James and Frances (Sluka) Koss. She grew up in Marcus where she attended school. She graduated from Sturgis High School. Toni graduated from St. John's School of Nursing in 1943. She was a nurse for over 30 years working at the Rapid City hospitals and serving overseas in the Army Nurse Corps with the 98th Infantry in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon her honorable discharge she continued to work at hospitals and for various doctors.
After her sister, Ruth, died she raised Ruth's children, Janet and James Kimball, as her own and they considered her their mother.
She married Maynard L. Kidd in the early 50's and they later divorced. She married Elof Mattson in 1964. He died in 1969. Toni married Francis W. Haley in 1971. She helped him in the real estate sales and auction services. He died in 2003.
Toni was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion in Sturgis. She was also a member of the Meade County Senior Center, AARP, and the Doe Drove #33 in Rapid City.
Survivors include Janet Marie Kimball, Rapid City; James A. Kimball, West Hollywood, CA; stepdaughter, Micky (Vince) Wienk, Spearfish; and stepsons, Kenneth Mattson and Robert Mattson, San Diego, CA;
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and five sisters.
Memorials have been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Charles Herbert Jacobs

July 23, 1923 - December 20, 2008

Charles Herbert Jacobs, 85, Newell, died Saturday, December 20, 2008, at Belle Fourche Health Care Center. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Clinton, Iowa.
Charles was born in Clayton, Iowa on July 23, 1923, to Freeman and Pauline (Pesch) Jacobs. He attended school in Clayton and went to ND when he was 16 years old. The following year he came to the Black Hills area and worked on a ranch for the Kammerers. In 1943 he was injured while rodeoing. Charlie later started an auction house importing and selling items for England. He then came to Newell to help his son Jerry as a saddle maker.
He is survived by three sons Jerry, of Belle Fourche; Charles Jr, of Washington; and Tom of Reno, NV; and two daughters, Pauline Fenton of Ozark, Mo.; and Judy Stranski of Buffalo, Wy., and one sister Edna Jacobs of Clinton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

David Edward Dickert

September 12, 1943 - December 18, 2008

December 27, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.

David Edward Dickert, 65, Deadwood, died Thursday, December 18, 1008, at his residence.
Visitation will be Friday, December 26th from noon until 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis with Pastor Dwight Peterson officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will be at Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday, January 2, 2009, at 9:30 a.m.
Dave was born September 12, 1943, in Lansing, MI, to Clarence and Evelyn (Roberts) Dickert. He grew up in Lansing. Dave served in the US Air Force from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1965. He served his last year in Rapid City where he met Jo Etta Heltibridle. They were married on March 14, 1965, in Spearfish.
They returned to Michigan for the next 36 years where Dave worked as a zookeeper and they raised their three children. Dave and Jo returned to the Black Hills in 2001.
Dave worked with the Potter Park Friends and Zoological Society on fund raisers and events. He was active with the teen keeper program and mentored many young students.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Etta Dickert, Deadwood; two sons, David Dickert and Todd (Renee) Dickert, all of Lansing, MI; one daughter, Debbie (Jim) Slater, Lansing, MI; one sister, Kathryn (Bob) Schenk, Grand Ledge, MI; three grandchildren, Zachery, Alysa, and Madison; and five step-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Mark, Brandon, Matthew, and Mariah.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials have been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills and to CASA.

Bernard "Bun" Bruch

June 14, 1922 - December 18, 2008

Monday, December 22, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.

Bernard "Bun" Bruch, 86, Sturgis, died Thursday, December 18, 2008, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, December 22, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery.
Bun was born in Sturgis on June 14, 1922, to Henry and Agnes (Karrels) Bruch. He attended St. Martins' Academy and graduated in 1941. Bun was a lifelong farmer and rancher in Meade County at Stoneville, Bear Butte Valley, and Alkali Road. He lived his later years on his grandparents homestead in Bear Butte Valley. In his younger days, he belonged to Flying Farmers and flew medicine and mail during the blizzard of '49. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and sang in the choir for many years. In 1967, he married Marcia Barnes in Barrington, IL. He was a dedicated family man who passed on to his sons his many farming and ranching skills. Bun was never hesitant to help neighbors, family, strangers, or to volunteer his sons to help.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia, and four sons, David, Mark (Pilar), Mike, and Bruce, all of Sturgis; two brothers, Henry, Sturgis, and Francis, Newcastle, WY; two sisters, Leona and Mary Louise Bruch, Sturgis; step-grandchildren, Cole and Faryn Sawyer; and twenty-eight nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tony, Clarence, and Joe; and his sister, Bernadine.
A memorial has been established for St. Martins' Chapel.

Ryan D. Ames

April 20, 1989 - December 14, 2008

Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.

Ryan Dhu Ames, 19, Spearfish, died Sunday, December 14, 2008, at his residence as the result of a house fire.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Mtn. View Baptist Church in Spearfish with Pastor Matt Branum officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Ryan was born April 20, 1989, in Spearfish to Susan (Sperl) and Raymond Ames. He grew up and lived in Spearfish his entire life. Ryan graduated from Spearfish High School this last May.
Survivors include his father, Ray Ames, Spearfish; his mother, Susan Sperl Ames, Spearfish; his sister, Lilly Ames, Spearfish; his half-brother, Jesse Warren, Washington; his grandfather, Bob Sperl, Gregory, SD; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Dale A. Stroschein

December 27, 1936 - December 15, 2008

Friday, December 19, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.

Dale A. Stroschein, 71, Sturgis, died Monday, December 15, 2008, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis from noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2008, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Burial will be at Bear Butte Cemetery at a later date.
Dale was born December 27, 1936, at Estelline, SD, to Albert and Margaret (Slattenow) Stroschein. He grew up on a farm near Toronto, SD, where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1954. He married Mary Ann Clausen on June 9, 1957, in Brookings, SD. He graduated in 1959 from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. He was a prominent figure in Sturgis and surrounding areas for over 30 years.
As a pharmacist for 34 years, he began at the Don Peterson Pharmacy in Rapid City from 1959 until 1960. He moved to Carter Drug in Belle Fourche (1960-1962), and became part owner of Sturgis Drug (1962-1992). While a practicing pharmacist, Dale held many positions, offices, and honors. Dale was honored with the Bowl of Hygeia Award in 1985 for outstanding service to his community and his profession, and served on the South Dakota Alcohol and Drug Abuse Advisory Committee, the South Dakota State Board of Pharmacy, the South Dakota Pharmacy Association as President and Vice President, and the Black Hills Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the National Association of Retail Druggists. When he retired from Sturgis Drug, Dale remained active in the Meade County Mental Illness Board, as well as other health and medical related associations.
Many local civic and societal organizations benefitted from his contributions and involvement as he took great pride in the community he and his family lived in. He was a long time treasurer of the Bear Butte Flying club, and a private pilot for 22 years, and served on the Sturgis Airport Improvement Committee. He was a member of the Sturgis and Northern Hills Development Corporations. With the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, he was President, Treasurer, Director, and Crazy Days Chairman, and served on the Downtown Business Improvement Committee. He also served on the Sturgis Park Board; Heritage Acres Board; The Black Hills Motorcycle Classic Board of Directors; served for 20 years as a Sturgis Volunteer Fireman; a charter member of the Black Hills Four Wheelers; and the Sturgis Jaycees where he received a Distinguished Service Award in 1966, Outstanding Religious Lay Leader, Key Man Award, and Outstanding Committee Chairman. As a member of Grace Lutheran Church, he served as President, Vice President, Council Member and Sunday School teacher. Aside from all of his activities, he really enjoyed fishing, hunting, and card playing.
Dale is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann, Sturgis; son, Robert Stroschein and his wife, Rose, Lakewood, CO; and son, Timothy Stroschein, and his wife, Kristi, and grandson, Samuel, Gillette, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alden.
