Albert T. Caldwell

March 23, 1925 - June 15, 2009

2 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2009

Albert T. Caldwell, 84, Spearfish and formerly of Sturgis, died Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2009 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Laura Campbell officiating. Inurnment follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Military Honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
"Babe" was born March 23, 1925 at Sturgis to Alton and Irene (Elliot) Caldwell. He attended Sturgis Public School for 12 years. He spent his summers on his grandparents ranch.
Babe enlisted in the US Navy in May of 1943 and served his country honorably on the USS San Juan before being discharged in February of 1946. Babe earned ten battle stars.
After returning to South Dakota he continued to ranch with his family until 1955. He worked construction for three years and ran heavy equipment and drove trucks for another three years.
On June 10, 1962 he married Fern Serres.
Babe worked for a local grain mill for 30 years and retired in 1990. After retiring the couple enjoyed many winters in Arizona. Babe also enjoyed yardwork and gardening.
Survivors include his wife Fern Caldwell, Spearfish; daughters, Darlene (Ted) Miles, Spearfish, SD, Elaine (Ken) Bader, Tempe, AZ; brother Dana Caldwell, Rapid City; sister, Virginia (Warren) Prascher, Sturgis; four grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents, one sister, one half brother.
A memorial has been established to the Children's Home Society in Custer.

Brook Holtsclaw

November 19, 1937 - June 17, 2009

Mary Ann "Brook" Holtsclaw was born November 19, 1937, in Jasper, IN, to Rex and Judy Watkins. Although her parents were Presbyterian, Brook was delivered at home by the Catholic Priest who was a friend of theirs. The doctor arrived in time to deliver her identical twin sister 15 minutes later. They lived for a short time in Indiana and Pennsylvania, then moved to Scottsbluff, NE, where she grew up. She graduated from Scottsbluff High School, and Scottsbluff College, then taught first grade at Mitchell, NE. Love blossomed between she and Paul at their high school ten year class reunion in August of 1965, and they were married two months later on October 30, 1965. Paul was in school in Denver at the time, and her "babbling like a brook" while he was trying to study earned her the nickname of "Brook", which stuck with her through life.
When he finished school in 1966, they moved to Ontario, CA, and purchased a home which they lived in until moving to Lead, SD, in February of 2000.
When they moved to California, Brook became very active with the youth in the Independent Order of Foresters. She was active in the P.T.A, and in the Girl Scouts of America, and Camp Fire Girls with her daughters. She organized the first "Y Indian Maidens" program in southern California at the West End Y.M.C.A. and was a member of Mokotam Temple, Daughters of the Nile in Los Angeles. Because of her close friendship with Billy Barty, she was very active with the Billy Barty Foundation, and Little People of America, Los Angeles Chapter, who honored her in 1995 for her years of loyalty and support. She and Paul handled hospitatlity for the Billy Barty Celebrity Golf tournament for 26 years. She was an active member of the Ontario Motor Speedway Boosters all the years of its existence, working in the information booth, overseeing the winners circle, and chaperoning "Miss Ontario Motor Speedway" and her court to their many appearances through out southern California.
Since she has lived in Lead, she has been an active member of the Community Christmas Dinner Committee, the Lead Golden Gang, American Legion Auxiliary, and Ismah Temple, Daughters of the Nile. Daughters of the Nile was very important to her, and a highlight of her life was serving as queen of Ismah Temple in 2003.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; son, Kevin (Dian) Holtsclaw of Mojave Valley, AZ; daughter, Nancy (Don) Freedle of Ontario, CA; daughter, Teresa (Don) Tuttle of Mojave Valley, AZ; five grandchildren, Chester Holtsclaw, Emma Holtsclaw, Jennifer (Wage) Jones, Patrick Shannon, and Donald Tuttle III; and two great-grandchildren, Jayson and Rebecca Jones.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Rex and Judy Watkins; and her twin sister, Nancy Simpson.
Brook died Wednesday, 06/17/2009 at her home in Lead.
Private family committal services are at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Lead Masonic Temple with a Daughters of the Nile service.
A memorial has been established to the NAJA Shriners Hospital Transportation Fund.

Edith Anderson

February 12, 1911 - June 14, 2009

Edith Anderson, 98, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.
She was born February 12, 1911, near Nisland to James Elbert and Mary (Axson) Payne. The pioneering farm family moved from Illinois to Western South Dakota in 1908 with their five children.
They farmed near the new town of Nisland for a decade. Her mother, Mary, died of pneumonia in 1915 leaving seven children that now included 4 year old Edith and her younger sister, 2 year old Jess.
In 1921 the Payne family moved to the Tyndal ranch seven miles east of Vale, which was the only house around with running water and a bathroom.
Edith graduated from the Newell High School in 1928, attended Northern State Teacher's College, and attended Black Hills Teacher's College. Edith taught school for 42 years at Nisland, Vale, and Butte County Country Schools.
Edith was married to Ernest Gutsche on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1934 by Pastor C. D. Erskine of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. Edith and Ernest farmed in the Nisland and Vale areas until Ernest's death in 1973.
After Ernest's death she continued to teach in Vale and operate the family ranch.
Edith married a lifelong friend, John Anderson in 1976. They enjoyed 10 years together on Edith's ranch where John was born and spent his early years.
Edith became a Sturgis resident after purchasing her "favorite home" of twenty years in 1992.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women's Group, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and the Aladdin Club.
Edith was a master gardener who enjoyed sharing the bounty of her harvest from her large garden. The first row of her garden was always planted with beautiful flowers for family and guests to enjoy.
Survivors include her loving family, Myra Jones, Little Rock, AR; Grandchildren, Michael Jones and his wife Tonia, Oak Harbor, WA, and their children, Jacob and Patrick Jones, all of Oak Harbor, WA; Granddaughter, Melissa Bowen and her husband Stephen, Maumelle, AR, and their sons, Drew and Ethan Bowen, both of Maumelle, AR. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and their families.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Oscar, Harry, and Dale Payne; three sisters, Edna Kinser, Ida Mae Doud, and Jess Smith; her husbands, Ernest Gutsche and John Anderson.
Memorials have been established to the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis and for the benefit of Newell School students seeking a degree in education at Black Hills State University.

Robert M. Inzer

June 27, 1930 - June 8, 2009

Robert M. Inzer, 78, Sturgis, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Joel Higgins officiating.
Bob was born June 27, 1930, at Birmingham, AL, to James and Alpha (Maun) Inzer. He grew up in Birmingham and graduated from High School.
He served his country honorably during the Korean War as a member of the US Army. Following his discharge, he returned to Alabama. He moved to Tulsa, OK, where he worked as a welder.
Bob married Virginia Chaney in Tulsa and they lived there several years.
Bob moved to Fayetteville, AR, where he met Mary Montgomery. They moved to Denver where Bob continued to work as a welder, metal fabricator, and ornamental iron worker. In 2007, Mary and Bob moved to Sturgis.
Survivors include his companion, Mary Montgomery, Sturgis; three sons, Wayne (Martha) Inzer, Fayetteville, AR, Doyle Inzer, Leander, TX, and John (Dianna) Spencer, Del Valley, TX; daughters, Debbie (Paul) Eagleton, Tulsa, OK, and Linda (Russell) DeNina, Tomball, TX; grandchildren, Eric, Jennifer, Kristin Talley, J.P., and Syndi Eagleton, and Chelsea and Hunter Harrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Raymond G. Heupel

November 28, 1939 - June 4, 2009

Monday, June 8, 2009, at 10:30 a.m.

Ray Heupel, 69, Sturgis, SD, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Hospital, after a courageous 3 ½ year battle with mantle cell lymphoma.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 8, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis, SD, with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis with a rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery, Sturgis.
Ray was born November 28, 1939, in Bison, SD, to Alfred and Nora (Rattei) Heupel. He grew up in ranch country and attended country school near Bison. He graduated from Reisch Auction School in 1957 in Mason City, IA. He worked at various farms and ranches in the Bison, SD, and Bowman, ND, areas.
On December 28, 1959, he married Cordavee Blees in Bowman, ND. As newlyweds they moved to Mobridge, SD, where he worked as yard foreman for Mobridge Livestock until 1962. In 1963 he became an auctioneer at Pipestone Livestock in Pipestone, MN. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, officer of the local saddle club and officer of the square dance club. He also announced and judged horse shows in the three state area.
In 1968, he moved to Bowman, ND, where he leased a farm/ranch combination and was an auctioneer at Bowman Livestock. In 1969, he started his own auction firm, Ray’s Auction Service, and conducted auctions of various sizes and types in a three state area. He was auctioneer at Baker Livestock in Baker, MT and Hettinger Livestock in Hettinger, ND. Ray was a member of the state and national auctioneer’s associations.
Ray served on the township board, 4-H leader, Bowman County Fairboard and as a St. Charles Catholic Church lector. He received two North Dakota Honorary FFA degrees.
In 1989, Ray and Cordavee moved to Sturgis, SD, where he was employed by Sturgis Livestock. He enjoyed working with the entire staff during this last term of employment before retiring.
Ray had an eye and exceptional ability for raising and recognizing quality livestock. He raised registered Paint and Quarter Horses, Charolais and crossbred cattle and sheep. He worked with many auctioneers crying all types of auctions in the areas where he lived over the years. He enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, great grandkids and 4-H members. Ray loved playing cards with his coffee buddies, dancing, anything to do with numbers, reading farm/ranch magazines and newspapers and playing solitaire on the computer.
He is survived by his wife, Cordavee; five children: Colin (Debbie) Heupel, Arvada, CO; RaeDeen Heupel, Richey, MT; Renee Hansen, Cheyenne, WY; Casey (Sharon) Heupel, West Glacier, MT, and Chad (Helen) Heupel, Frederick, MD; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Five sisters: Alyce (Delbert) Hurst, KS; Linda Besler, WY; Diane (Terry) Brown, NM; Margie Kvanvig, SD, and Debbie Heupel, CA. Six brothers: Alvin (Arlys) Heupel, ND; Alfred (Judy) Heupel, MT; Norman (Dora) Heupel, KS; Leonard (Janice) Heupel, ND; Lester (Cleita) Heupel, TX, and Ronnie Heupel, SD.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lorraine Pace of NM.
Memorials have been established to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the American Red Cross, and the local Relay for Life.

Richard S. Satterlee

June 8, 1920 - June 5, 2009

Monday, June 8, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Richard Satterlee, 88, Piedmont, died Friday, June 5, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Richard was a farmer, rancher, realtor and veteran of WWII. He approached every task as though he were killing snakes. A charismatic self motivated creative innovative entrepreneur, his highest place of influence was his family. Richard was known for his love of fun and abundant curiosity. He lived as he died loving the land.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Gladys; children, Katie Crow (CA), Beverly Collins (TX), Helen Francis (MO), Laura Horn (MO), and Steve Satterlee (SD); sixteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and Mattie, his beloved golden retriever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Evelyn (Baird) Satterlee; his twin brother, Robert; one sister, Dorothy McMurtrey; and an infant brother, Baird.
Visitation will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis on Monday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Interment services will follow on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Pastor Randy Horn officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.

Beatrice I. Gilmore

June 1, 1912 - May 27, 2009

Beatrice I. Gilmore, 96, Sturgis and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 1, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Wanda M. Turbiville

June 2, 1917 - May 23, 2009

Wanda M. Turbiville, 91, Belle Fourche and formerly of Newell, died Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 5 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Friday. A wake and rosary service begins at 7 p.m. at the St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell on Friday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial follows at the Hope Cemetery in Newell.
A memorial has been established to the St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell.
Wanda was born June 2, 1917 at Hebron, ND, to Mikhail and Apolonia (Powroznik) Maliske. She grew up in ranch country and attended country school. After graduating from high school she married Preston W. Turbiville at Buffalo, SD on June 11, 1938.
The couple farmed near Camp Crook until they moved to Belle Fourche. They farmed on the Redwater River before purchasing their own farm North of Newell in 1951. They sold the farm and moved to Newell in 1977.
Wanda worked as a ranchwife and school cook. She enjoyed her sewing club, quilting, and playing cards. The Turbiville house was always open. They boarded high school students for many years and they also kept numerous Air Force personnel that worked on the missile sites.
Wanda was also a member of the NVN Senior Center, the VFW Auxiliary and St. Mary's Altar Society.
Survivors include one son, Chuck Turbiville, Deadwood; four daughters, Waneta (Roy) Keene, Chadron, NE, Marjery (Michael) McCracken, La Honda, CA, Beverly (Loren) Leichtnam, Sheridan, WY, Kathleen (Mark) Hammond, Pierre, SD; five sisters, Agnes Welch, Ludlow, SD, Sophie Sarsland, Bowman, ND, Veronica (Delmar) Svihovec, Hettinger, ND, Bertha (Joe) Whalen, Spearfish, Elizabeth (Al) Yanzich, Portland, OR; also 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers and one sister.
