Gertrude Hutter

January 8, 1923 - May 24, 2009

Service was held:

Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

Gertrude Hutter, 86, Sturgis, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Judy's Assisted Living in Belle Fourche.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
A rosary will be held Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery.
Gertrude was born at home in a two room log cabin near Plainview on January 8, 1923, to John and Anna Mary (Tambornino) Hutter. She attended school at Plainview and later at the Hamm School near Bear Butte through the 8th grade. In 1937, Gertrude won the American Legion Essay Contest, which was special for her since she disliked public speaking.
Gertrude was housekeeper for Father Feubach for over 30 years. She nursed him until the end of his life as he was dying of cancer.
She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi parish, St. Francis Circle, and St. Francis Altar Society.
Survivors include four sisters, Theresia Cassidy, Sturgis, Mary Baker, Belle Fourche, Anne Beer, Huntsville, AR, and Agnes Hutter, Tyndal, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Stephen; and one sister, Frances Young.
A memorial has been established to the Msgr. Leo Feubach Burse.

Reuben Fischer

October 22, 1915 - May 22, 2009

Service was held:

Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Reuben Fischer, 93, Spearfish and formerly of Sturgis, died at the Dorsett Health Care on Friday evening, May 22, 2009.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Sturgis, SD, with Rev. Joel Higgins officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
Reuben was born October 22, 1915, at Medina, ND, to William G. and Christina (Klein) Fischer. He grew up and attended school at Steele, ND. He married Mary M. Oster on March 14, 1937, in Steele, ND. The couple farmed there until 1960 when they moved to Sturgis.
Reuben worked in construction as a carpenter. He worked for Corner Construction in Rapid City until his retirement.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dorven (Gerri) Fischer and Ron (Margie) Fischer, all of Sturgis; two daughters, Marilyn (David) Jerome, Portland, OR, and Ardene (John) Martin, Florence, KY; one brother, Wilmer Fischer, Bismarck, ND; one sister, Edna Remmick, Steele, ND; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, two daughters-in-law, and three brothers.
A memorial has been established.

Dale L. Morman

April 12, 1927 - May 21, 2009

1 p.m. Tuesday May 26, 2009

Dale L. Morman, 82, Sturgis, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Dale was born on April 2, 1927 in Crofton, Nebraska to Henry and Agnes Morman.
He entered the United States Army in 1945. In 1948 he joined the South Dakota National Guard and was called into active duty with the 196th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War.
Upon discharge, he returned to South Dakota to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Juris Doctor Degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
Following graduation he moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota. There he met and married Mary Ann Quinn. He served as State’s Attorney of Stanley County and relocated to Sturgis where he went into law practice with Percy Helm. He became Senior Partner of Morman, Smit, Shepard and Hughes and eventually established the Morman Law Firm where he actively practiced law until his death.
He was the recipient of a 50-year service award from the American Bar Association, member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and VFW. He also held other various offices in several organizations throughout his life.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Ashley, Sturgis and Anne Morman, Rapid City; son, Greg (Stacy) Morman, Rapid City; two brothers, Ralph Morman and Earl Morman, both of Yankton; one sister, Ethel Sorensen, also of Yankton; beloved friend, Leann Johnson, Rapid City; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian Morman and brother, Howard Morman.
Visitation and Rosary will be Monday, May 25 at 7pm at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 1pm at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis. Father Arnold Kari will officiate.
Burial with full military honors will be held following the service at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Friedreich's Ataxia Foundation.

Lloyd Lawrence Stapert

July 15, 1941 - August 26, 2009

Service was held:

Monday, August 31, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Lloyd Lawrence Stapert, 68, Timber Lake, SD, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Committal services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2009, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Chaplain Ralph Vencill officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Lloyd was born July 15, 1941, at Dupree, SD, to Bernard and Mabel (Blatner) Stapert. He attended country school and worked as a ranchhand. He joined the US Army in 1963 and served his country honorably until his discharge in 1966. He returned to South Dakota where he worked for ranches and was employed by the Dewey County Highway Department.
Survivors include his son, Larry Stapert, Timber Lake, SD; one brother, Dale Stapert, Philip, SD; and one sister, Bonnie Mitchell, Dupree, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter, one brother, and one sister.

Lucille Nelson Warren

August 12, 1920 - August 19, 2009

Service was held:

Sunday, August 23, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Lucille Nelson Warren, 89, Lead, SD, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2009, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Kyle Reinhiller officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
A time of fellowship and refreshment follows at the Deadwood VFW Club.
A memorial has been established to the Deadwood VFW.
Survivors include one son, LeRoy Warren, Fargo, ND; one daughter, Claudia Verdun, Bemidji, MN; one brother, Kenny Nelson, Deadwood; also 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Irma G. Bartling

March 20, 1912 - August 16, 2009

Service was held:

Saturday, August 22, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

Irma Genevieve Bartling, 97, Rapid City and formerly of Sturgis, died Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the Meadowbrook Manor in Rapid City.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the White Owl Cemetery.
Irma was born March 20, 1912, at a winter cattle camp north of Wall, SD, to Charles Payton and Nellie Mae (Goff) Tivis. She grew up at Tivis, SD, and attended the Tivis, Bapp-Newton, Newton, and Faith Schools. After graduating from high school in Faith, Irma married Albert Gottfried Herbst on March 7, 1934, at Dupree.
She later married Martin Hartwig Bartling in September of 1946 at Billings, MT. Martin was in the military and Irma and the children moved to Hawaii. They also lived in California and Washington, D.C. until Martin's retirement from active duty in 1969. They returned to South Dakota and ranched near Red Owl. They moved to Sturgis in the mid 80's. Irma had lived in retirement in Spearfish and also Rapid City.
Survivors include her sons, Derral R. Herbst, Honolulu, HI, Martin H. (Susan) Bartling, Vacaville, CA, and Barton C. (Sharon) Bartling, Union Center; one daughter, Terry Ann Whitmyre, Rapid City; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.
A memorial has been established.

Harvey Dean Bossert

December 5, 1944 - August 16, 2009

Friday, August 21, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Harvey Dean Bossert, 64, Hot Springs, died Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the SD State Veteran's Home.
Graveside services will be held Friday, August 21, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Chaplain Bill Zandri officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Harvey was born December 5, 1944, at Isabel, SD, to Christ and Helen (Brenner) Bossert. He grew up in Isabel. After Harvey graduated from high school, he served in the US Army in Vietnam from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1966. He then moved to Seattle where he worked for Herbert Merkel for 30 years. He returned to South Dakota and worked as a mechanic for another 10 years before moving to the State Veteran's home 15 years ago.
He enjoyed working with snowmobiles and motorcycles. Harvey also sold them for many years.
He is survived by three brothers, Don Bossert, Mobridge, SD, Jay Bossert, Lisco, NE, and James Bossert, Springview, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Judy.

Waino Victor Wanhanen

June 16, 1915 - August 13, 2009

Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

Waino Victor Wanhanen, 94, Whitewood, died Thursday, August 13, 2009, at his residence in Whitewood.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Inurnment will follow at the St. Onge Cemetery.
Waino was born June 16, 1915, at Elk Creek, SD, to Otto and Mary (Teerisala) Wanhanen. He attended country school and learned to work at an early age.
Waino married Alice Leeling at Lead, SD, on January 25, 1942. They lived in various places in the Black Hills area until moving to Whitewood in August of 1951.
Waino worked for the Homestake Gold Mine and retired from the Homestake Sawmill in Spearfish. He like to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his sons, Larry H. Wanhanen, Rapid City, and David V. Wanhanen, Whitewood; two daughters, Janice M. (Dennis) Sisson, Sheridan, WY, and Charlotte K. (Russell) Fiedler, Whitewood; one grandson, Joshua J. Fiedler, Whitewood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; brothers, Swen, Wilho, Wilhart, and Walter; and sisters, Mamie, Helma, and Senja.
A memorial has been established to the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Evelyn Spencer

October 23, 1918 - August 7, 2009

Service was held:

Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Evelyn Spencer, 90, Nisland, died Friday, August 7, 2009, at Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 11th and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, August 12th at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at Vale Cemetery in Vale with Pastor Doug Clark officiating.
Phebe Evelyn Spencer was born October 23, 1918, at Vale, SD, to Dale and Harriett (Felion) Kingsbury. She grew up in the Vale area and graduated from Vale High School in 1936. She married Harold Spencer January 17, 1945, and moved to a farm just south of Nisland. She attended Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma, and retired after teaching for more than 33 years at area schools including Vale, Horse Creek, and Nisland. She lived on the farm for 60 years until moving to Spearfish in October, 2005, and then Belle Fourche in April, 2009.
Evelyn enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, bingo, cards, wildlife shows, bowling, and board games. She loved animals, always having a dog or cat and she was always feeding an assortment of birds, squirrels, deer, and an occasional family of skunks or raccoons.
She is survived by her brother, Dale Kingsbury, Jr., Webster Groves, Missouri; nephews, Alan and Franklin Kingsbury and families, also from Missouri; and other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1989, and her parents.
A memorial has been established to the Nisland Independent Community Church.
