1:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009

Ray Albert Marrs, 85, Whitewood, died Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the ranch near Whitewood.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at the Nisland Independent Community Church with Pastor Doug Clark officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Ray was a longtime member of the church and a memorial has been established to the Nisland Independent Community Church.
Ray was born March 12, 1924 at Sturgis, SD, to Albert and Edna (Priest) Marrs. Ray grew up on a homestead East of Sturgis in the Volunteer area. He spent his life as a rancher on the prairie until he and his mother moved to Whitewood Valley following the blizzard of 1949 where he continued to ranch.
When attending his brother's wedding in New York, he met the organist, Alice J. Moller. Ray and she were married on December 5, 1953 on Long Island, New York. To this union were born 4 children.
Survivors include his wife Alice Marrs, Whitewood; son Paul (Linda) Marrs, Whitewood, Annette (Bob) Lamb, Nisland, Dan (Anna) Marrs, Whitewood, Kari (Knute) Henning, Keller, TX; grandchildren, Erik, Kirstin, Kalli Henning, Kay, James and John Marrs, and Matthew Marrs; one brother, Aldean L. Marrs, Loveland, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three sisters.

Tom Newt Powell

October 3, 1924 - August 4, 2009

Service was held:

1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2009

Tom Newt Powell, 84, Sturgis and formerly of Newell, died Tuesday, August 04, 2009 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Rev. Harlan Robbins officiating. Inurnment follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established to the DAV Transportation Fund.
Tom was born October 3, 1924 at Warrensburg, MO, to Floyd and Minnie (Jasper) Powell. He joined the CCC's at an early age and then traveled to Arizona to work on a ranch. He returned to Missouri where he was promptly drafted into the U.S. Navy
Tom was a Seaman First Class on the USS Chester and was honorably discharged in 1946. He traveled north and found work on ranches in Montana and South Dakota. He married Ida McCahan.
Tom learned the auto body trade and earned a living repairing vehicles in Wyoming and South Dakota. He owned and operated his own body shop in Sturgis.
Tom married Connie Aga at Belle Fourche on August 1, 1967 and they moved to Arkansas where Tom opened Newts Body Shop. He learned to fly and earned his private pilot's license. He bought, sold, rebuilt and flew numerous small aircraft over the years. The family bought part of Hammond, MT, in 1982 and they opened a café and mechanic shop where he continued to pursue his hobbies. In 1986 they moved to Newell where they retired. Tom kept busy with airplanes and body work for several more years.
Tom was a former member of the EAA and the USS Chester Association.
Survivors include his wife Connie Powell, Sturgis; son William D. "WD" Powell, CA; daughters Leigh Powell, Omaha, NE, Vicki Nolan, Bull Shoals, AR, Connie Sue Daniels, Fort Jones, CA; step sons, Paul Patterson, Belle Fourche, William Patterson, Houston, TX, Jesse Patterson, Mt. Home, AR; step daughters, Cynthia Eide, Sturgis, Victoria Saulsbury, Colstrip, MT; brother, Reese Powell, Miles City, MT; 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one step son, one grandson, one brother.

George Franklin Dulany

September 1, 1927 - August 5, 2009

Service was held:

10:00 a.m. Wednesday August 12, 2009

George Franklin Dulany, 81, Rapid City, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Committal services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday August 12, 2009 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Pastor Brent Woodard officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, prior to leaving for the cemetery.
George was born September 1, 1927 at Sturgis, SD, to Thomas and Bessie (Jeffery) Dulany. He attended school in Sturgis until enlisting in the Navy in 1945. After serving his country, he became an over the road truck driver for many years. He retired in 2000 after 28 years of employment with Johnson Machine.
Survivors include his wife Louise Dulany, Rapid City,; three sons, Russ Dulany, Pierre,SD, Randy Dulany, Silver Springs, MD, Michael (Theresa) Dulany, Richmond, ME; one step son, Joseph (Norma) Coyle, Sr. Berea, KY; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one brother, James (Eva) Dulany, Rapid City, SD, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Roger and one sister.

Gladys C. Coe

February 1, 1917 - August 2, 2009

Service was held:

Monday, August 10, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Gladys C. Breidenbach Coe of Sturgis, SD, died Sunday, August 2, 2009, after a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Going home services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2009, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
Gladys was born in Greencastle, IN, February 1, 1917, to Grover C. and Nellie Breidenbach who raised her on a homestead in Perkins County near Zeona, SD. She attended Spring Creek Grade School, Bison High School and earned a teaching certificate from Black Hills Teachers College. Gladys taught grade school at Meadow and Strool, SD. She married Gail Coe June 5, 1939, and raised 2 children, Rose Ella and Gary. Gladys co-labored with the love of her life, Gail, and celebrated 70 years of marriage, June 5 of this year. Together they farmed, ranched and operated a trucking and livestock feed business in Perkins County until retirement in the late 70’s. Gladys loved nature and was a true "prairie girl" who saw beauty in life’s simple things as God made them.
Gladys was a true pioneer with her knowledge and use of land management. She not only planted trees everywhere she lived, she also practiced using organic principles in her gardening and land beautification. Her love for birds was evident in her latter years as she was able to devote more time to watching and identifying all kinds of birds native to South Dakota. Gladys exhibited a keen sense of wisdom along with a sense of humor throughout her entire life. She had a philosophic approach to life and great insight into her friends. She shared this rare gift in the form of poetry. She became the poet laureate not only for her family, but for all of her neighbors and friends as she was able to relate life histories and events through the many poems she wrote. Gladys will be forever remembered and appreciated through this legacy.
Survivors include her husband, Gail Coe, Sturgis; daughter, Rose Ella (David) Roach, Kapaa, Hawaii; son, Gary (Sandee Hill) Coe, Bozeman, MT; six grandchildren, John (Kathy) Roach, Paul (Shannon) Roach, Tara (Peter) Premenko, Tracey (Brian) Sears, Ryan (Josh) Ray, and Josh (Kim) Coe; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Nellie Breidenbach; sisters, Gertrice Hinds and Glenda Hinds; and brothers, Grover C. (Brownie), Jacob, and Charles Breidenbach.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Marian Agnes Barker

December 15, 1914 - July 31, 2009

Tuesday, August 11, 1009, at 2:00 p.m.

Marian Agnes Butler Barker entered peacefully into the presence of Jesus on July 31, 2009, at her home in Sturgis, SD.
Born December 15, 1914, to Burtis and Agnes (Jameson) Butler near Faith, SD, she was one of six girls and two boys. Marian graduated from Faith High School in 1931. She remained one of two alumni to celebrate her 78th high school reunion. She attended Spearfish Normal College before beginning her teaching career. Later in her 50's, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Black Hills Teachers College, receiving high honors. Mrs. Barker was a devoted and highly respected teacher, having taught the township one room school near Faith, various rural schools in Meade, Pennington, and Lawrence Counties, and later in the Sturgis school system.
Marian married Loyal Barker July 12, 1936, in Faith, SD, and soon after moved to Ohio where their son, Duane Burtis, was born in 1937. In 1939, they relocated to Iowa where her husband, Loyal, operated a plumbing business and lived on the Barker home place near Corning. Twins, Phyllis and Phillip, were born in 1940 and Ronald Loyal in 1942.
In 1946, the family returned to South Dakota and Marian lived in Sturgis for most of her remaining years. She enjoyed reading and reciting poetry, was an avid reader, and a blue ribbon gardener.
Through her deep love of her Lord Jesus, she became a loving role model for her family, wide circle of friends, and her local church, Church of God of Prophecy. She served for many years as Women's Mission Leader, Sunday school teacher, and church pianist. She and Loyal brought the message of Christ's love and redemption to many small South Dakota towns, making many friends and helping to establish churches.
Marian and Loyal enjoyed many years traveling throughout the US, visiting family and escaping the cold SD winters. Until this spring, at 94 years old, she still traveled by air to visit her children in Tennessee, Virginia, and California.
Her love for children made her the epitomy of a storybook grandmother and great-grandmother, planning countless family reunions and annual camping trips to Camp Hannah. She enriched the lives of her grandchildren, Scott Barker, Apple Valley, MN, Todd Barker, Falls Church, VA (deceased), Vanessa Wright Suess, Lodi, CA, Stephanie Wright Montgomery, Highland, CA, Brent Wright, Indio, CA, Julie Barker Oaks, Johnson City, TN, Lori Barker Corbett, missionary in Fukuoka, Japan, Amy Barker, Newport News, VA, Melanee Barker and Robin Barker McPherson, Cleveland, TN, and Dusty Barker, Crawford, NE. Thirteen great-grandchildren eagerly awaited her yearly visits when she would draw, do arts and crafts with them, and cheer at their athletic events, Bryan Barker and Matthew Barker, Evan Suess and Ian Suess, John Montgomery IV, Chloe Montgomery, and Zane Montgomery, Taylor Oaks and Logan Oaks, and Georgia McPherson and Frances McPherson.
Marian leaves behind one daughter, Phyllis and husband, Stan, Highland, CA, two sons, Phillip and wife, Betty, Newport News, VA, and Ronald and wife, Pamela, Cleveland, TN; daughter-in-law, Catherine Barker, Apple Valley, MN; and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families and a host of friends too many to number.
Family members gone on before are her devoted husband of 50 years, Loyal Barker; cherished son, Duane Barker; loving grandson, Todd Barker; her parents, Burtis and Agnes Butler; two brothers, Leonard Butler and Baby Burtis Butler; and three sisters, Marjorie Gabrielson, Dora Walter, and Ruth Shroyer.
Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with the family present from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Delbert Bock, Isabel, SD, and Pastor Linda Grenz, Sturgis, officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Wayne Stanley Chord

July 6, 1924 - August 1, 2009

Service was held:

Thursday, August 6, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

Wayne S. Chord, 85, Sturgis, went home to be with the Lord on August 1, 2009.
Wayne was born July 6, 1924, at White Owl, SD, to Roy and Edith (Clayton) Chord.
He served during WWII in the US Navy as a Boatsman 2nd Class. He was severely injured when he was blown out of a lookout tower, breaking both feet and his hands.
Wayne had various jobs throughout his life including being a minister at Chadron, NE, and Union Center. He worked as a federal game warden, deputy sheriff, a government wheat inspector, an airplane pilot, and was a reservoir manager in North Dakota. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, earned his Seminary degree, and established and built several churches during his time in the ministry.
Wayne enjoyed hunting, telling stories, traveling, and spending time with his family. He had an undying love of the outdoors and wildlife, which led to going to work for the government as a federal game agent for many years, flying to Canada, banding geese, and preserving wildlife, hunting, and fishing.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family and "Bernie" is his first and only love.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Berniece (Raetz) Chord, Sturgis; two sons, Cliff (Arla) Chord, Sturgis, and Roy (Gretchen) Chord, Torrington, WY; two daughters, Jackquline (Thomas) Lewis, McCook Lake, SD, and Jeanette (Mark) Gearhart, Columbus, NE; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Chord, Arizona, and Richard Chord, Jamaica; and five sisters, Doris Mickelson, Enning, Zoe Grotzke, Missoula, MT, Ilowee Owens, Tuscan, AZ, Iris Dau, Omaha, NE, and Ruth Mayer, Lagona Beach, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Vernon, Everett, and Don.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Believers Fellowship Church with Pastor John Williamson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Kenneth H. Swaney

January 13, 1968 - July 28, 2009

4 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009

Kenneth H. Swaney, 41, Rapid City, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 in Rapid City.
Services will be 4 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army Chapel.
A second service will be offered Monday, August 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Chapel in Sioux Falls.
Burial will take place at a later date.
Ken was born January 13, 1968 at Sioux Falls, SD, to Harold and Sandy (Hennings) Swaney. He grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1986.
Ken married Dawn Walker at Sioux Falls on June 2, 1990.
Ken was a carpet installer for over twenty years. He worked for Interstate Flooring when the family moved to Rapid City in 2005.
Ken enjoyed fishing, bowling, Nascar and softball.
Survivors include his wife Dawn Swaney, Rapid City; son Steven Swaney, Rapid City; parents, Harold and Sandy Swaney, DeSmet, SD; one brother, Randy Swaney, Stillwater, MN; one sister Suelynn Swaney, Sioux Falls; and his grandmother, Marion Haugstad, Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by one son, Justin.

Donald Lawrence Paradeis

January 10, 2029 - July 28, 2009

10:00 a.m. Friday July 31, 2009

Donald Lawrence Paradeis, 80, Spearfish, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 4 p.m. Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and resume one hour prior to services at the church in Spearfish.
A Wake and Christian Prayer service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish with Deacon Vern Rath officiating.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish with Fr. Timothy Castor officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Donald Lawrence Paradeis was born January 10th, 1929 on a farmstead in Hanson County, South Dakota to Lawrence & Gertrude (Krempges) Paradeis. He grew up in the Epiphany area where he helped on the family farm and attended the school there through the 8th grade and later went on to earn his GED.
He entered the Army in 1951 where he received a Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. He was Honorably Discharged in 1953. Before and after the service Don worked at Wingens Garage in Epiphany.
He was united in marriage to Phyllis Neises on October 14, 1953. To this union were born 4 children: William, Kathleen, Jeanette and Janel.
In 1966 he moved the family to Sioux Falls when he began working at Tri-State Implement. In 1977 they moved to Sturgis where he worked for Hersrud's until his retirement in the late 80's. He then moved to Spearfish where he continued using his mechanical skills.
Don managed the VFW Hall for many years in Spearfish. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
Don was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He loved to play Bingo and play the slots on occasion. He also gave many volunteer hours to the Passion Play where he played many different parts.
Those having shared his life include his son William "Bill" of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 daughters, Kathy (Tim) Shelley of Gibsonia, PA, Jeanette (Paul) Staley of Sturgis, SD, Janel (Walt) Peoples of Glendale, AZ: 7 grandchildren: Jen, Niki and Stephanie Shelley; Sam and Doug Staley; Walter Jr. and Tyler Peoples.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Kenneth, Clifford and Charles and 1 sister Delphine.
