John "Jack" William Smith

September 17, 1938 - July 26, 2009

Friday, July 31, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

John "Jack" William Smith, Piedmont, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, at his residence in Piedmont.
Rosary services will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with Monsignor William O'Connell officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Des Moines, IA.
Jack was born on a ferry boat in the middle of the Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa. He graduated from high school in Des Moines, IA, and attended college in Iowa City. He worked several years in New Orleans, LA, and moved to the Black Hills in the mid 60's. He owned and operated beauty salons in Spearfish and Rapid City. He also fixed the hair of the ladies that worked the houses in Deadwood.
He and his longtime companion, Richard Stoll operated the Stage Barn Crystal Cave until Richard's death in 2003. For many years, Jack wintered and worked in El Paso, TX, where Richard taught. Jack graduated from Western Dakota Vo-Tech with a degree in Phlebotomy in 1999. He worked for a time at United Blood Services until a work related accident forced him into an early retirement.
Jack had a life long interest in the Plains Indian Culture. He was considered by many an authority on the pre reservation life. He was an artist at recreating the material culture of the pre reservation era, which included beading, quillwork, clothing, and artifacts. He was recognized for his work on the set of Dances with Wolves.
Survivors include many friends across the United States and the world who shared the same interests, as well as many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Jack agreed life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty, well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, "Wow, what a ride!"

Larry G. Funell

December 3, 1943 - July 22, 2009

10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2009

Larry Gene Funell, 65, White Owl, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Denzel Nonhof and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial follows at the White Owl Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Sturgis DAV.
Larry was born December 3, 1943 at Sturgis, SD, to Archie and Ella (Pence) Funell. He grew up in the country and graduated from Sturgis High School. He was drafted into the US Army and served his country with the Strategic Communication Command as a communications specialist with the Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam war. Upon his discharge he returned to South Dakota where he continued his lifelong career in farming and ranching.
Survivors include his mother Ella Funell, White Owl; one brother, Jerry Funell, White Owl; one sister Betty Funell, Sauk Rapids, MN; special friend, Tamala Lester and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Elda Naomi Hendrickson

January 13, 1931 - July 16, 2009

Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

Elda Naomi Hendrickson, 78, Sturgis, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Lippold Hospice Suite of the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center.
Elda was born January 13, 1931, at Newell, SD, to Hal and Blanche (Lewis) Paulson. She grew up in Newell.
Elda married Donald James "Whitey" Hendrickson at Belle Fourche, SD, on June 10, 1950. The couple lived in Lead and Whitewood while Don worked at Homestake. They moved to "Whitey's Ranch" near Bear Butte in the mid 70's. After Don retired, they had more time to enjoy their hobbies.
Elda enjoyed water aerobics and she was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.
After Don's death in February of 2008, she continued to live on the ranch. She moved to Sturgis in October.
Survivors include her sons, James (Debra) Hendrickson, Litchfield, IL, Jack (Diane) Hendrickson, Vale, SD, and Mike (Colleen) Hendrickson, Sturgis; daughters, Donna (Charles) Himelrick, Hundred, WV, and Dorthy (Donald) Johnston, Rockford, IL; one brother, Paul (Wilma) Paulson, Tullos, LA; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; one daughter, Diane; four brothers; and one sister.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Virgil Garfield Simons

June 12, 1932 - July 12, 2009

Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 1:00 p.m.

Virgil Garfield Simons, 77, Sturgis, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the Lippold Hospice Suite of the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center of pancreatic cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Kyle Reinhiller and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Virgil was born June 12, 1932, in Sturgis, SD, to Garfield and May (Priest) Simons. He was raised on a ranch south of Enning where continued to ranch until 1996 when he moved to Sturgis. Virgil married Anita Cundy March 10, 1957. She passed away in December, 1971. He married Kay Eddy August 24, 1975, in Belle Fourche, SD.
Virgil was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting elk for almost 60 years in Montana and the Black Hills. Summers found him and Kay fishing at Oahe for walleye and he especially enjoyed fishing in tournaments. Virgil spent many summers team roping and later took up golfing. He loved exploring the Black Hills trails on his four-wheeler. He loved the outdoors, from the plains to the Black Hills. He and Kay also spent many winters in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Simons, Sturgis; one son, Kelly (Marcie) Simons, Ft. Pierre, SD, and their children, Jessica and Shay Simons; daughter, Karen Simmons, Sturgis, and her children, Anita and Jimmy Simmons; daughter, Krystal Simons, Ft. Pierre, SD, and her children, Roman, Emily, and Hailey Spaid. He had three stepsons, Alan Dahlman, Rapid City and his son, Ben Dahlman; Bryan (Laura) Dahlman, Gillette, WY, and their children, Janet Dahlman and Mitch and Clint Hackman; and Clark (Jennifer) Dahlman, San Diego, CA, and their daughters, Spencer and Lauren Dahlman. He is also survived by one sister, Vera Denker, Caldwell, ID.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gary and May Simons, and two sisters, Shirley Arends and June Bauer.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Curtiss Albert Weisz

April 14, 1948 - July 7, 2009

Curtiss Albert Weisz, 61, Gillette, WY, died Tuesday, July 07, 2009, at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial follows with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Curt was born April 14, 1948 at Hot Springs, SD, to Albert and Agnes (Kane) Weisz. He attended grade school in Hot Springs and graduated from Provo High School in Provo, SD in 1966. Curtiss attended SDSU briefly before being drafted by the US Army. He was in the army from 1967 to 1971, during which time he served in Vietnam and Germany. After his return to the states he held several jobs in Montana and South Dakota, including logging, gold mining, working at a feedlot and for the Fall River County Highway Department.
Curt met Linda Flyte in 1973 in Hot Springs, SD. They were married in Casper, WY on January 19,1977 and had one daughter, Julie.
While in Casper, Curt worked as a machinist for Drilco. In 1982, the family moved to Williston, ND where Curt worked for Basin Machine and Steel, Inc. In 1987, they moved to Gillette, WY where Curt worked for EMS for 22 years.
Curt was well liked and had a great sense of humor. He loved reading and fishing. He was an avid sports fan and was always the one to organize football and basketball pools at work. He was a lifelong Cubs fan. He got to see his first game at Wrigley Field in April of this year when friends from work took him to Chicago.
Curt was a lifetime member of the Hot Springs VFW and a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife Linda Weisz, Gillette; daughter Julie Weisz, Gillette; brothers, Lowell Weisz, Hot Springs, Martin (Karen) Weisz, Sacremento, CA; sister Ida Merrill, Hot Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step father, Frank Tobin.
A memorial has been established.

Iza Doering

October 5, 1909 - July 6, 2009

STURGIS - Iza Doering, age 99, died Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Sturgis Regional Hospital. She was born October 5, 1909 to Carl G. and Elizabeth Gunkel, pioneer ranchers, at the family ranch 23 miles Southwest of Belfield, ND. Iza was one of seven children, two boys and five girls. She attended school through the 8th grade in a one-room country schoolhouse. She graduated from Belfield High School. After graduation she attended Dickinson State Normal School in Dickinson, ND and finished with a teaching certificate. She taught school in rural, one room schoolhouses in Billings County, North Dakota from 1930 to 1935. Her daily transportation to and from school was by horseback, during her teaching years she never had a car.
She married Herbert V. Doering Sr. on December 27, 1934 in Wibaux, Montana. After the marriage she went back to teaching at Matteson School until school let out in the spring of 1935. She lived in North Dakota until early 1942 when she moved with her family to Wendell, Idaho for the building of a Japanese internment camp, Camp Minidoka. She stayed there until the camp was completed in early September 1942. The family moved to Sturgis, SD in October 1942 where her husband worked for the McMahon Company, a feed, seed and grain elevator in Sturgis. They bought a nice brick house at 837 Dudley Street where she lived for over 60 years. In 2002 she moved to the Key City Retirement home. She worked at Dodson’s Grocery from 1968 until it closed in 1978. She then worked at the Sturgis Senior Citizens center as hostess from 1978 until 1995. She is a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sturgis. She has been an active member of the Rebekah Lodge # 36 and the VFW Auxiliary. Iza has been a great friend to many people over the years; her kind and easy listening approach along with her willingness to give advice in privacy were her most endearing charms.
All four of her children completed elementary and high school in Sturgis. Iza had children in the Sturgis Public School system for 32 years, from 1942 when Charles entered, until Cathie graduated in 1975. All four of her children graduated from college at Black Hills State College with Bachelors Degrees.
She is survived by her four children, Charles and Jane Doering, Bellevue, NE; Duke and Susan Doering, Rapid City, SD; Herb Jr. and JoAnn Doering, Gothenburg, NE; and Cathie and Tom Anderson, Sturgis, SD. Ten (10) grandchildren, Mike Doering, Rapid City, SD, Barry Doering, Rapid City, SD, Todd Doering, Omaha, NE; Danelle Branjord, Sioux Falls, SD; Tawnya Strauser, Gothenburg, NE; Tamara Ruggles, Bismarck, ND; Jennifer Concepcion, Valrico, FL; Melissa Doering, Brandon, FL; Eric Anderson, Salt Lake City, UT; and Jesse Anderson, Spearfish, SD. She also has eleven (11) great-grandchildren, Alexis, Mitchell, Chanse, Reece, Jade, Kynlee, Kellen, Kalli, Eva, Brady and Jacob. She is also survived by three sisters, Margaret Griffin, Dickinson, ND; Helen Lindbo, Belfield, ND and Gertrude Scott, Alburnette, Iowa.
She is preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, one sister, and one grandson, Casey Anderson.
Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 10, 1009, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Senior Citizens’ Center.

Randall L. Cummings

June 27, 1953 - December 30, 2009

Rapid City- Randall L. Cummings, 56, Rapid City, died Wednesday December 30, 2009 at the Portland VA Medical Center in Vancouver Washington. Services will be held at St. Isaac Jogues Church in the coming days. Inurnment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors.
Randy was born June 27, 1953 at Rapid City, SD, to Leroy and Mary Ann (Larvie) Cummings.
Survivors include his two daughters, Lisa and Melanie Cummings, Rapid City; grandson, Rylan Cummings-McFarland, Rapid City; brothers, Melvin Cummings of Manderson, SD, Douglas Cummings of North Dakota, Frank Cummings of Hot Springs, SD, Patrick Larvie of Pine Ridge, Arnold Cummings and Ben Cummings, both of Rapid City, Delbert Cummings of Grand Junction, CO; one sister, Joyce Salway, New Underwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and four brothers.

Ruth Bauer

March 29, 1934 - January 1, 2010

Ruth Bauer, 75, Sturgis, died Friday, January 1, 2010, at her residence in Sturgis.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2010 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the Grace Lutheran Church and Hospice of the Northern Hills.
Ruth was born March 29, 1934 at Hillsview, SD, to John and Tillie (Weisz) Kramer. She attended school in Groton, SD, Hillsview, SD and Hosmer, SD. Ruth worked as an aide at the Eureka, SD, hospital. She met and married Charles Marvin Bauer at Eureka on April 22, 1956. The couple farmed for Charles' parents for several months before moving to Renton, WA, where Charles was employed for Boeing. They moved to the Hauber Mine near Hulett, WY and lived there until moving to Sturgis in 1966. Ruth was employed at Fort Meade and worked in dietetics until her retirement.
Ruth was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and was fond of Bible study. Through the years she loved doing crafts and visiting with her "club" ladies, a group of very good friends. She enjoyed geocaching, walks, and loved spending time with her grand and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards and other games.
Survivors include her sons, David (Loray) Bauer, Deadwood, Kevin and Kelly Bauer, both of Sturgis; one daughter, Carletta (Randy) Carsten, Helena, MT; two brothers, Jim (Inez) Kramer, Rapid City, Milton (Valya) Kramer, Rapid City; two sisters, Grace (Bernie) Rumpca, Canby, OR, and Monica (John) Irwin, Phoenix, AZ; also 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Kirby (Lucy) and her husband Charles.

Helen T. Rittberger

October 28, 1918 - December 30, 2009

1 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Helen T. Rittberger, 91, Hermosa, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, December 30, 2009 in Denver, CO, while visiting family.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Bill Savery officiating. Burial follows at the Highland Park Cemetery in Hermosa. Following burial a time of fellowship and food will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hermosa.
A memorial has been established in Helen's name and the funds will be distributed among Helen's favorite charities.
Helen was born October 28, 1918 near Quinn, SD, to John and Emma (Peterson) Guethlein. She graduated from Quinn High School in 1936 and from Spearfish Normal College in 1941.
Helen taught school at Clough, SD, and lived with Charlie and Bertha Hild. She met her husband, John, through his sister, Bertha Hild. John and Helen were married June 9, 1942.
They made their home on the ranch that was homesteaded by John's parents.
Helen was a founding member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hermosa, and a member of Battle River #142 Order of Eastern Star. Her interests were family, baking, gardening, traveling, participating in the Custer County Fair, and serving in the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie (Richard) Miller, Hermosa, Betty (Clark) Yost, Wilmore, KS; three sons, Fred (Mary), and Bob Rittberger, all of Hermosa, John (Linda) Rittberger, Fairburn, SD; two sisters, Maxine Smith, Owanka, SD, Frances Poste, Wall, SD; one brother, John Guethlein, North Platte, NE; also 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, and two sisters, Marjorie Willuweit and Dorothy Burch.
