Junior Wiley Bennett

February 5, 1928 - December 30, 2009

Service was held:

Monday, January 4, 2010, 2:00 p.m.

Junior Wiley Bennett, 81, Belle Fourche, SD, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Hospital with his beloved wife, Lucille, by his side.
Visitation will be held from noon to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, January 3rd, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with the family present from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge, Pastor Paul Howard, and Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Following the service, burial will be held at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Junior was born February 5, 1928, in Miller, SD, to Wiley and Katherine (Guthmiller) Bennett. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Haydraw, near Union Center, and attended country school in Central Meade County. Junior ranched at Union Center for several years.
On October 3, 1950, Junior married the love of his life, Lucille Goodwin, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, SD. To this union, four children were born: Duane, Don, Elaine, and Marilea.
Junior loved ranching and did so for many years. In 1966, Junior, Lucille, and their children moved to the Clayton Talley Ranch, located in Central Meade County on Sulphur Creek. The ranch was later sold to Joe Bruch, where they continued to manage for the next 25 years. During this time, Junior and Lucille hosted numerous hunters and created lifelong friendships. In addition, Junior was a Meade County Deputy Sheriff for Sheriff John Egger. Junior especially enjoyed “coppin” the country dances. He shared many stories of his experience as a deputy sheriff. He took great pride in this role of protecting his fellow neighbors, especially watching over the younger crowd.
In 1999, Junior and Lucille moved to Belle Fourche where they settled along the Belle Fourche River. It is here where they enjoyed semi-retirement as they managed cows, kids, and grandkids. Junior especially loved putting up hay and swathing beautiful alfalfa fields along the river bottom.
Junior was a lifelong cattleman, who especially loved his Charolais cows, and passed on his love of cows to his kids and grandkids. He was a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, and an avid supporter of 4-H and FFA. Junior also had a passion for horses. He enjoyed teaching horsemanship skills to his children and grandchildren. He was often found attending youth rodeos and supporting his family’s many activities. Furthermore, Junior took pride in his tack collection; in fact, one of his recent hobbies included oiling the family saddles.
Junior took pride in his and Lucille’s marriage and the fact they had been married for 59 years. He thought his sweetheart was a wonderful woman. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and grandkids, telling a good joke and sharing a good laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Bennett, Belle Fourche; son, Don (Marilyn) Bennett, Belle Fourche; daughters, Elaine Jensen, Belle Fourche, and Marilea Ferris, Rapid City; brothers, Sam (Loretta) Bennett, Sturgis, and Virgil (Zeta) Bennett, Belle Fourche; son-in-law, Jerry Jensen, Belle Fourche; daughter-in-law, Cindy Bennett, Rapid City; ten grandchildren, Loni (Chris) Wells, Rapid City, Wiley (Taletha) Bennett, Indian Trail, NC, Jason (Ashlee) Jensen, Belle Fourche, Jennifer Jensen, Rapid City, Jordan (Michael) Galyen, Council Bluffs, IA., Doni Bennett, New Mexico, Justin Jensen, Belle Fourche, Tyler Ferris, Belle Fourche, and Kimberley and Allison Ferris, both of Rapid City; four great-grandchildren, Aren and Alex Wells, Rapid City, and Hailee and Trevor Bennett, Indian Trail, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley and Katherine Bennett; son, Duane; granddaughter, Lori Dawn; four brothers, Wilbert Bennett, Albert Bennett, Floyd Bennett, and Pete Dodge; and two sisters, Ada Kulesza and Edith Bennett,
A memorial has been established, which will be given to a young 4-H participant this August at the Butte/Lawrence County Fair.

Erma Varland

July 24, 1913 - December 24, 2009

Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

Erma Varland, 96, formerly of Spearfish died at the Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care on Thursday, December 24, 2009.
Erma was born to David and Dorothy (Uffelmann) Foos on July 24, 1913, at Sedgwick, CO.
Erma was united in marriage to Vearl Varland on November 15, 1955, in Sioux Falls, SD. They resided in Spearfish for most of their married life. Vearl died on October 8, 1991. Erma continued to live in her home until 2003 when ill health caused her to move to the senior care center.
Erma is survived by two brothers, Lawrence (Cleo) Foos of Nisland and Clarence and (Carol) Foos of Hermosa; two sisters, Elenora Hellwig of Rapid City and Dorothy (Clifford) Hauck of Utica, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Erma was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Carl and Art.
Funeral services will be held at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Joe Hobbs and Mr. Mike Henry officiating. Burial will be at the Rosehill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Angela B. Sedig

June 10, 1918 - December 19, 2009

10:00 a.m. Tuesday December 29, 2009

Angela Blaalid Sedig, 91, Whitewood and Rapid City, died December 19, 2009 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Angela was a dedicated servant of our Lord and ministered throughout her life through church music and nursing.
She was born June 10, 1918 in Mitchell, SD, to Justus and Sophie (Solberg) Blaalid of Lane, SD, where Angie attended school until moving to Estelline, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1936. She moved to Washington, D.C. to live with sisters and enrolled in nursing school at Sibley Memorial Hospital, serving three years as Class President and Chapel Organist, receiving her R.N. Degree in 1942. She worked at St. Elizabeth's and Children's Hospital in D.C. until moving back to South Dakota. She married Stanley M. Sedig of Bruce, SD, in 1948 before moving to Newcastle, WY, where they owned the Club Café as well as Angela nursing at Newcastle General Hospital. In 1962, Stan and Angie moved to Rapid City and Angie again worked nursing at St. John's Hospital. Finally, in 1966, they moved to Whitewood, SD, where they operated Sedig Nursing Home for Veterans. Stanley passed away in 1975 but Angie Continued to operate the nursing home until 1986. A two story castle stands to this day at the Whitewood nursing home, built stone by stone by her then 82 year old father, Justus Blaalid.
Angela Sedig grew up in a family that fostered Christian values and beliefs, not the least of which was the principle that sharing of time and talents is a necessary component of life. As a "nervous 13 year old", Angie made her first appearance as a church organist in her home church. She continued a long "tour of organist duty" totaling seven decades of service – some of which were Grace Lutheran in Newcastle, WY; Atonement Lutheran in Rapid City; and Immanuel Lutheran in Whitewood, the latter for 34 years where she also directed adult and children's choirs.
Tender memories of Angela include her great love for her cats and she was an avid sports fan. There are many Black Hills football contest hopefuls who will have a better chance of winning their weekly newspaper competitions since Angie has played her last game. She enjoyed scrabble, community bingo, and traveling to see her two grandchildren.
Survivors include her three sons, Joseph Huppmann, Wilmington, NC, Norman Sedig, Cody, WY, and Timothy Sedig, Rapid City; a sister, Gwenith Sietsema, age 96, Ft. Morgan, CO; a brother, Orvis Blaalid, age 94, Montgomery, AL; two grandchildren, Derek Huppmann, USMC, and Kate Huppmann, USN; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stanley Sedig, and a sister, Wilma Lawrence, Woodbridge, VA.
Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m., Monday, December 28, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, SD, with Rev. David Baer officiating. Immediately after there will be a fellowship gathering followed by burial at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Lawrence Nicholas Strang

November 12, 1926 - December 20, 2009

10 a.m. Monday, December 28, 2009

Lawrence Nicholas Strang, 83, Sturgis, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center.
Committal services will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Lawrence was born November 12, 1926 at Clear Lake, SD, to Andrew and Margaret (Hoff) Strang.
He married the love of his life, Irene Friskey on April 10, 1949 at Lead, SD, where they raised their seven children. Larry "Smokey" worked for Homestake Mining Company for 42 years, he retired in 1989 and they moved to Sturgis to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his two daughters, Deb (Steve) Schultz and Nancy (Terry) Corkins, Sturgis; five sons, Mike (Shirley) Strang, Jim (Tami) Strang, Rapid City, Butch (Roxanne) Strang, Sioux Falls, Nick (Toni) Strang, Tracy, CA, Chris (Shannon) Strang, Pueblo, CO.
Ten grandchildren; Shelli (Doug) Hardesty, Denise Mckeown, Mallory Strang, Sturgis, Michael Strang, Summerset, SD, Amanda Mckeown, Spokane, WA, Emily Strang, Deadwood, Curtis and Samantha Strang, Tracy, CA, Nicholas Strang, North Carolina, BJ, Strang, Sioux Falls, SD; seven great grandchildren, Shantel, Jessica and Kyle Hardesty, Ashlin and Kettrick Strang, Malcolm Innes and Brianna Datz; three sisters, Dorothy Beyer, Sioux Falls, Rose Shoenrock, Colman, SD, Rinelda Hunt, Aztec, NM; three brothers, Melvin Strang, Boise, ID, Milton Strang, Alliance, NE, Lyle Strang, Gillette, WY; also many nieces and nephews who he adored and loved very much.
Children and sports were the light of his life. He loved kids. He never missed a sporting event that one of his children participated in. Lawrence will be sadly missed by all who knew him, he was just a Big Ole Teddy Bear!
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Irene, two brothers, George and Sylvester, one sister Alice and his parents.
A memorial has been established to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital.

Gordon W. Bierle

July 24, 1934 - December 17, 2009

10 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2009

Gordon Wayne Bierle, 75, Sturgis, SD, died Thursday December 17, 2009 at his residence in Sturgis.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel from noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday with the family present at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 21, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis with Chaplain Herb Cleveland officiating. Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 22 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Gordon was born July 24, 1934, to Herb and Grace (Dupic) Bierle in Lesterville South Dakota. After graduating from Scotland High School he joined the US Navy from 1952 to 1956.
He was married to Shirley Edwards on July 20, 1958, and they made their home in Sturgis where they raised their 3 kids, Donna, Ricky, and Debra. He worked at Fort Meade VA for 34 years, retiring in 1990.
Gordon loved spending winters in Yuma, AZ for the past 12 years, where he spent time soaking up the sun, cooking, and hosting parties. He was active in the Good Samaritans and Hillbilly Camping clubs. He enjoyed working in his woodworking shop and helping out at the farm.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Shirley, Sturgis; daughters Donna Loughlin, Sturgis; Debra (Darel) Casteel, Vale, SD; son Ricky (Linda) Bierle, Rapid City; grandchildren Kerri (Ryan) Benne, Kelli (Dustin) Cermak, Kayla Loughlin, Casey Bierle, Lacey Bierle, Justin Casteel(girlfriend Andrea Steele), and Shaun Casteel; great grandchildren Brady and Madison Benne, Alexis Cermak; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by both parents and brother Laverne.

M. Blanche Krush

September 15, 1919 - December 15, 2009

Friday, December 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

M. Blanche Krush, 90, Spearfish, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Margaret Lynch officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Blanche was born September 15, 1919, at Oaks, ND, to Charles R. and Bessie (Finch) Davis. Blanche's childhood was spent in LaMoure, ND, where she attended school. Later her family and she moved to Sturgis, SD.
On April 24, 1941, Blanche married Peter Krush in Ellendale, ND. Her husband served in the Air Force and their family made homes in a number of locales, including Jackson, MI, Gettysburg, SD, and Rapid City, SD. During this time, Peter and Blanche raised five boys, Peter, Freddie, Patrick, William, and Perry.
After Peter's enlistment with the Air Force concluded, they moved to Rapid City in 1967. During this time, Peter worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base and Blanche worked within the home. They continued to reside in Rapid City until 1972, when they moved to Belle Fourche.
In Belle Fourche, Blanche served occasionally in the Belle Fourche school system, assisting with the supervision during the lunch session. In 1996, Blanche moved to the Hickory House in Spearfish, where she made a number of close friends in the senior community. She resided in Spearfish until 2003, when she moved to the Belle Fourche Health Care Center for additional assistance due to her arthritis.
Blanche was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Rapid City.
She is survived by three sons, Pete (Alberta) Krush, Belle Fourche, Fred (Pearl) Krush, Rapid City, and Perry (Kathy) Krush, Rapid City. In addition, she has thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; four brothers, Bernard Davis, Charles Davis, Ivan Davis, and Henry Davis; her sister, Florence; two sons, Patrick Krush and William "Bill" Krush; and her parents, Charles and Bessie Davis.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Blanche to the Hickory House in Spearfish, SD.

Marvin William Kallenberger

May 8, 1940 - December 12, 2009

Marvin William Kallenberger, 69, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009 at home with his wife of 47 years and his family by his side.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, noon to 9 p.m. The funeral will be Wednesday, December 16, at 10 a.m., at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kyle Reinhiller officiating. Burial will be at the Bear Butte Cemetery

Marvin was born May 8, 1940, at Eureka, South Dakota, to William and Fredia (Herman) Kallenberger. He grew up on the family farm in Hosmer, South Dakota and later moved to Deadwood in 1950. There he attended school through the tenth grade before moving to Washington State for 2 years, working in his family's orchard and warehouse. In 1960, he returned to Deadwood where he started working in the logging business. Marvin was married to Patricia Delzer at Lead, SD on April 14, 1962. The couple lived in Lead until 1976, when they moved to Sturgis. In 1995, they relocated to Whitewood.

Marvin worked as a lumberjack until retirement in 1991 due to health concerns. He enjoyed fishing and camping bust most important was his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Patricia Kallenberger, Whitewood; son, Tim Kallenberger, Whitewood; daughter, Tonya (Clancy) Fenner, Gillette, WY; mother, Fredia Kallenberger, Sturgis; sisters, Fran (Chuck) Wood, Sturgis, Sandy Engel, Sturgis, Bernice (Dave) Huff, Yakima, Wa, Shirley Hall, Yakima, Wa; and grandchildren, Seth and Riley Hampton, Ciara and Cassidy Fenner.

He was preceded in death by his father, one nephew, and his brother-in-law.
A memorial has been established to the Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Wanda L. Smith

October 7, 1935 - December 11, 2009

Wanda L. Smith, 74, Alliance, NE, died at Broken Bow, Nebraska on Friday, Dec 11, 2009.
Wanda was born October 7, 1935, to William Henry and Ival A. (Lenker) Mason in Hamill, SD. She grew up around Winner, South Dakota.
She was married to Drexel Smith on August 15, 1956. To this union six children were born. The family lived in Hay Springs, Gordon and Alliance, NE. She worked many years at the truck stop in Gordon and Woolrich in Alliance.
Survivors include a daughter in law, Ann Smith, daughter Roxane Forster (Alan), daughter Ivy Smith, son Drexel D. "Skip" Smith (Susan), son Eugene "Spike" Smith (Shelli), daughter Penny Fey (Jerry). She is also survived by one sister Shirley Novak and two brothers Lyle Mason (Hazel) and Francis "Buzz" Mason and 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Wanda is preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Ival A. Mason and two brothers, Ted Mason and William Mason and one sister Clarice Dreyer and her husband, Drexel and one son, Randy Smith.
Funeral Services will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent in her name to Golden Living Center (Alzheimers Unit) 224 East South St. Broken Bow, NE 68822.
