Mary Louise Hunter, 87, Spearfish, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Dorsett Regional Senior Care Center in Spearfish.
Committal services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Pastor Kyle Reinhiller officiating. Friends are asked to gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Mary Louise was born July 19, 1922 at Topeka, KS to Harley Warren and Harriet Blanche (Worden) Gifford. She grew up in Topeka and graduated from high school. She attended the Jullliard School of Music in New York. During the war years she was introduced to photography. She moved to San Francisco where she worked as a wire photo operator. She moved to St. Louis, MO and worked for the St. Louis Globe and Dispatch.
She met John Bean Hunter and the couple married March 31, 1945 in St. Louis and continued to work for the newspapers.
The family moved to Festus, MO, where they farmed for several years. Following John's death she continued to farm until moving to South Dakota in 1981. She made her home near Rapid City until moving to Spearfish to be closer to family.
Survivors include two sons, James Hunter, Spearfish; Jeffery Hunter, Anchorage, AK; also 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one son John.

Elsie Leona Bertsch

April 20, 1926 - July 8, 2010

Service was held:

2:00 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2010

Elsie Leona Bertsch, 84, Gillette, WY, and formerly of Sturgis, SD, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Pioneer Manor in Gillette.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church in Sturgis on Monday.
There will be a memorial service in Gillette, WY, at the Pioneer Manor on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 9:30 a.m.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Elsie was born April 20, 1926 at Tripp, SD, to Conrad and Paulina (Stoebner) Losing. She married Herbert Bertsch on June 20, 1943 at Menno, SD. On September 17, 1956, Elsie and her family moved to Lead and lived there for 36 years. She then moved to Sturgis in 1992. In November of 2005, Elsie moved to Gillette, WY.
Survivors include her two children and their spouses, Jerome and Vicki Bertsch, Sun City, AZ and Vermona and James Petersen, Gillette, WY. She has three grandchildren and their spouses, Tiffani and Jeff Hockett, Surprise, AZ, Clinton and Jennifer Petersen and Matthew Petersen, all of Gillette, WY. She has four great grandchildren, Justin Hockett, Surprise, AZ, Gavin, Vance and Tayne Petersen, Gillette, WY.
A memorial has been established to the Pioneer Manor in Gillette.

John William Hipps Jr

July 3, 1947 - July 7, 2010

Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm

John William Hipps Jr., 63, Rapid City, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Monday.
Services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Duane Grenz officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
John was born July 3, 1947 at Hickory, North Carolina to John William Sr. and Thelma (Huskins) Hipps.
After graduating from High School he joined the US Air Force and served his country honorably in Germany.
He married Frances "Linda" Maria Skinner at Sturgis.
After returning to Rapid City he worked as a meat cutter for Sturgis Meat Service. He joined the staff at Lynn's County Market as a meat cutter and was transferred to Faith, SD. John and Linda owned and operated the Faith Independent Newspaper until 1997. They returned to Sturgis and John was employed as a meat cutter at BJ's Country Store in Black Hawk until his retirement in 2002.
John enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include his daughter, Jana Hipps, Rapid City; his special friend Carol Geyer, Rapid City; one sister Hippy Johnson, Hickory, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one brother.

Leo J. Weyrich

March 11, 1927 - July 8, 2010

Leo Jakob Weyrich, 83, rural Sturgis, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Leo was born March 11, 1927, on the farm 23 miles east of Sturgis at Volunteer, SD, to Jakob and Margaret (Lorang) Weyrich. He was the 5th of 12 children.
Leo joined the National Guards in 1949. He served in Germany during the Korean War. Leo retired from the National Guards in 1989, reaching Command Sergeant Major in the 109th Engineers. He farmed and ranched on his parents' homestead all of his life.
Leo married Yvonne Williams of Nisland on December 27, 1953, at the Bear Butte Valley Catholic Church east of Sturgis. They raised their two sons, Bruce and Robert "Bob".
Leo sold insurance for Harding Perkins Mutual. He also sold hybrid seeds for several different companies.
Leo served on many committees, was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club, the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis, and the Knights of Columbus. Leo was one of the founders of the Western Dakota Antique Club. He enjoyed restoring old tractors. He also was a Meade County ASCS committee person and chair, was a spot-checker for fields and grain bins for the ASCS (FSA), was Meade County Weed Board President, a SD Weed and Pest Commission member and chairman, a Lifetime Member of the American Legion and VFW, and was a 4-H leader and contributor.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Yvonne of Pierre; his sons, Bruce and Darci Weyrich of rural Sturgis, and Robert and Jennifer Weyrich of Pierre; his grandchildren, Laura Weyrich of State College, PA, Keith Weyrich of rural Sturgis, Krista Weyrich and fiancé, Joey Kirst, and their daughter, Aubree May, of Rapid City, Nick Weyrich of Brookings, and Taylor Weyrich of Pierre; three brothers, Vic Weyrich, Sturgis, Paul Weyrich, Newcastle, WY, and Frank Weyrich, Yoder, WY; and four sisters, Louise Christenson, Mitchell, SD, Gladys Brown, Vale, SD, Helen Komes, Sturgis, and Dorothy Dunn, Vale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters, Alice and Gertrude; and two sisters, Clara Knutson and Mary Roessr.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. A vigil will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, July 12, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established to the Western Dakota Antique Club.

William O. Newman

January 26, 1919 - July 7, 2010

10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010

William O. Newman, 91, Spearfish, died July 7 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of the Northern Hills in Deadwood with Pastor Pat McBride officiating. Burial follows in the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Deadood.
A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church of the Northern Hills in Deadwood.
Bill was born January 26, 1919 in Alliance NE to Paul and Lottie Newman (Hayward). He was raised in Alliance, during his childhood he lived in Missouri and Deadwood for a short time. After he graduated from high school he worked on the Blair and Snyder ranch near Bear Butte, where he learned farming and ranching operations. In 1939 he married Lolita Newman, whom he was married to for 68 years until her death in 2007. They continued farming and ranching at Shadehill, SD and Vale, SD until 1955 when he went to work for Homestake Gold Mine until his retirement.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife and with friends and spending winters in Texas for 18 years.
He is survived by one son Jerry Newman (Sandra), of Rapid City, two daughters, Patricia Morgan (Bruce) of Boulder Canyon, and Belinda French (John) of Witchita, KS, eight grandchildren: Mike, Matt, Mark, Adam, Sara, Jason, Jon, and Nicholas, and 9 great grandchildren.
Preceeded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers.

James Edward Wilder III

November 22, 1947 - July 6, 2010

Friday, July 9, 2010, at 10:00 a.m.

James Edward Wilder III, 62, Spearfish, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead with Fr. Kerry Prendiville officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
James was born November 22, 1947 at Pasco, Washington, to James Edward and Rosemary (Becker) Wilder Jr. He grew up in Norris, SD, Rapid City, and Hot Springs. After graduating high school in Hot Springs, he was drafted into the US Army where he served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. After his honorable discharge, he returned to South Dakota.
He married Patti Beck at Deadwood. James owned and operated his own crusher business. Jim worked in and around the Black Hills for many years in the road, dam, and mining industries.
He married Cheryl Register at Hot Springs on November 25, 1987.
At the time of his death, James had been employed by Oftedal Construction. He had worked all over the Midwest as a heavy equipment operator and supervisor.
James liked to hunt and take fishing trips to Cabo. He also enjoyed socializing with his friends and co-workers. He was a member of the VFW and a third degree Knights of Columbus, council #6137.
Survivors include his son, Clinton Wilder, Montrose, CO; one daughter, Stephanie Wilder, Fargo, ND; his mother, Rosemary Becker Wilder, Las Vegas, NV; brothers, David (Jim Connelly) Wilder, Tampa Bay, FL, Daniel (Tami) Wilder, Roy, UT, Michael Wilder, Las Vegas, NV, and Pat (Sandra) Wilder, Gillette, WY; sisters, Susan Wilder, Las Vegas, NV, Katherine (Steve) Jensen, Sturgis, Mary Anne (Robert) Lux, Sioux Falls, and Betty Schumacher, Hot Springs; also two grandchildren, Hunter and Garhardt.
He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Stephen; and several aunts and uncles.
A memorial has been established.

Frank Dewey Johnson

September 9, 1928 - July 2, 2010

Frank Dewey Johnson, 81, Lead, died Friday, July 2, 2010 at his home in Lead surrounded by family.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Lloyd Lemke officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Memorials have been established to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis and Hospice of the Northern Hills.
Frank was born September 9, 1928 at Mobridge, SD, to John M. and Minnie (Beyerle) Johnson.
In 1951 he joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. He returned home and helped build the Pactola Dam in 1955.He married Mae O'Brien on December 4, of 1955 at Glenham, SD.
Frank started working at Homestake Gold Mine on November 15, 1955. He worked as a contract miner in timber stopes, open cut and fill. He put screens and ladders in bore hole raises. He retired on December 31, 1990 and went to work with his sons in the roofing business..
He enjoyed camping with his family at Pactola, hunting, fishing, playing cards; especially pinochle and down hill skiing well into his 70's. He liked to watch old Westerns. Frank could fix anything from cars to faucets. He was hard working but the most special part of his life was his family. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Survivors include his wife Mae, Lead; sons Glenn Johnson, Lead, Darwin (Danna) Johnson, St. Onge; daughters, Valerie Littleton, Elk Point, Shari Johnson, Lead; sisters, Florence (Dale) Long, Denver, CO, Grace Schott, Mobridge, Gladys Johnson, CA; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Minroy, Martin and George; one sister, Lucille Thompson.

Jerry L. Gifford

June 30, 1935 - June 27, 2010

Jerry Leon Gifford, 74, Newell, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at his home in Newell.
Services will be 2 p.m. July 1, 2010 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Tom Martin officiating. Inurnment follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Jerry was born June 30, 1935, at Nampa, ID to Joe and Margaret (Hixon) Gifford. The family moved to Hayti, SD, in 1937 and then to the Newell area in 1949. Jerry worked on the family farm in Nisland, SD.
On June 30, 1973 he married Beverly Ann Wetz. Shortly after, the family settled in Newell. Jerry owned and operated a water hauling business until he started working for the Belle Fourche Irrigation District in 1977. He worked as a ditch rider until his retirement in 1997.
Jerry loved his cats, gardening, meeting his friends for coffee at the Blue Line Diner, woodworking, polishing rocks for jewelry, hunting and fishing. He was very independent and kept himself busy with all of his hobbies.
Survivors include his son Tommy (Leah Multz) Gifford, Rapid City; daughter, Michelle (Mike) Hanson, Nisland, SD; one brother Donnie (Mickie) Gifford, Lead; daughter in law, Nadine Wetz, England; sister in law, Loretta Gifford, Piedmont; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren; one niece and several nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly Wetz Gifford; parents; brother, Jim Gifford and son Stuart Wetz.

Frances M. Olson

December 26, 1948 - June 25, 2010

10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010

Frances Marie Olson, 61, Newell, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at her farm near Newell.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor H.B. Cleveland officiating. Inurnment will be at the Highmore Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established to Al Anon.
Frances was born December 26, 1948 at Highmore, SD, to Glen and Ella (Hirsch) Taylor. She grew up in Highmore and graduated from Highmore High School. She attended Huron College for one year before transferring to Black Hills State where she graduated with a teaching degree. She taught in Scranton, ND. She started teaching in Newell, SD, in 1978. She taught Science, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences until retiring in 2007.
On May 31, 1987 she married Kenneth Olson at Ft. Meade, SD.
After retiring Frances worked at Campbell Supply in Sturgis in order to raise her sheep, goats, cats and dogs.
Survivors include her husband Kenneth Olson, Newell; two sons, Tony Olson, Nashville, TN, Michael Olson, Portland, OR; brothers, Joe Taylor, Aberdeen, SD, Glen Taylor, Rapid City, SD, Robert (Tammy) Taylor, Amarillo, TX; two sisters, Elie Taylor, Freeman, SD, Pauline (Leonard) Wift, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Frank.
