Noveline D. Holsclaw

March 16, 1917 - October 27, 2010

Service was held:

Private family services at a later date

Noveline D. "Nobby" Holsclaw, 93, Spearfish, was here yesterday but is gone today. She died October 26, 2010, at Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care. She went on to join her husband, Bud; sons, Don and John; and grandsons, Travis, Dan, and Justin.
She leaves behind two sons, Jim and Tammy of Winnemucca, NV, and Stan and Sharon of Whitewood; one daughter, Ann and Larry Kymala of Whitewood; three grandchildren, Ben, Jim, and Marcie; and three great-grandchildren, Baylee, Brett, and Erica.
Following Nobby's wishes, her body has been cremated. There will be private family services and she will be inurned at the ranch at a later date.

Regino J. Martinez

March 27, 1931 - October 21, 2010

Service was held:

Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at 1:30 p.m.

Regino J. Martinez, 79, Rapid City, died Thursday, October 21, 2010, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Chaplain Bill Meirose officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Regino was born March 27, 1931, in Villanueva, NM, to Adam and Alice (Madrid) Martinez. He served in the US Air Force from 1948 until his honorable discharge in 1951. He received several medals, including the Korean Service Medal.
Regino married Eva Bettelyoun in Kadoka, SD, on May 31, 1995.
Regino worked several jobs, but especially enjoyed ranching. He also enjoyed working with people and animals. Regino was an avid guitar player. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Martinez, Rapid City; three sons, Ken "Monk" Martinez, Reggie Martinez, and Steve Martinez; two brothers, Chris Martinez and Louis Martinez; two sisters Josie Rodriguez and Margaret; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Julian and Johnny Martinez; and three sisters, Sadie Carlson, Fannie Strickland, and Rita Veneviedes.

Julia A. Wilhelm

March 31, 1913 - October 18, 2010

Service was held:

10:00 a.m. Monday October 25, 2010

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday October 25, 2010 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Inurnment follows at the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A rosary service will begin at 7 p.m.
Julia Ann Wilhelm, 97, Sturgis, and formerly of Mobridge, passed away Monday, October 18, 2010 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Julia was born March 31, 1913 at Ventura, ND, to Anton and Magdalina (Thomas) Schumacher. She received her formal education through the 8th grade in rural class rooms in the Napoleon, ND area.
On April 24, 1934, she married John V. Wilhelm at Wishek, ND. They made their home in Wishek, Eureka, and in 1947 they moved to Mobridge, SD, where Julia became employed as a sales clerk at J.C. Penney's. After her husband's retirement in 1962 they moved to Sturgis, SD, and Julia resumed her work for Penney's until 1977.
In 1976 John passed away and she continued to live in her own home until the age of 90. She enjoyed crocheting many delicate doilies and baking numerous delicious goodies.
In 2003 she entered Foothills Assisted Living in Sturgis where she resided the past seven years. On August 30th, she entered the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center and was a resident there until her passing. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Altar Society.
Survivors include her daughters, Jean Maynard, San Antonio, TX, Patricia Collins, Mobridge,; step daughter, Mary Pudwill, Bismarck, ND; stepson John Wilhelm, Marysville, CA; also 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, five brothers, three sisters, sons in law; Leo Pudwill, Kenneth Maynard, James D. Collins; and one granddaughter, Colleen M. Rohlfs.

Linda L. Moelter

January 22, 1944 - October 18, 2010

Service was held:

Thursday, October 21, 2010, at 10:00 a.m.

Linda L. Moelter, 66, Sturgis, died Monday, October 18, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 21, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Linda was born January 22, 1944, in Walt Hill, NE, to Henry and Frances Sedig. As a child, her family moved from job to job, finally settling in Timber Lake, SD.
She went to Faith, SD, where she met and married Robert Moelter on November 3, 1962. They resided in many towns throughout Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota and finally settled in Sturgis.
Linda was a long-time contract carrier for Seaton Publishing, Meade County Times, and Rapid City Journal. She loved gardening, canning, and crafting, but especially enjoyed working with the Toys for Tots program.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 48 years, Robert Moelter; three sons, Petty Officer Larry Moelter, Sturgis, Lt. Col. John Moelter (Bridgette), Georgia, and William Moelter (special friend, Sharlene), Sturgis; two daughters, Brenda Nikkila (Doug), Sturgis, and Carolyn Bertalot (Jerry), Sturgis; seven grandsons; ten granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Petty Officer Larry Moelter.
A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Geraldine L. Whitehead

April 14, 1940 - October 16, 2010

11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010

Geraldine L. "Geri" Whitehead, 70, Rapid City, died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the Destiny Four Square Church in Rapid City with Pastor Brent Parker officiating. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs, SD, at a later date.
Geri was born April 14, 1940, in Hot Springs, SD, to Garold and Alta Johnson. She attended the first 8 years at McClellan school in Custer County, graduating from Hot Springs High School in 1957.
Geri married Jim Whitehead on May 23, 1957, in Rapid City. They lived and worked on the Johnson ranch near Dewy, SD. To this union, four children were born. They moved to Rapid City in 1960.
After being a stay-at-home mom for nearly 18 years, she went to work as an alcoholism counselor in Pierre. She worked at several alcohol programs throughout the years.
In 1976, she married Roger Franklin in Pierre (now deceased). In 1983, Geri married Vernon Elliott in Hot Springs (now deceased).
As many of you know, Geri had a long battle with alcoholism herself. She had been sober since September 17, 2000. After being diagnosed with cancer, Geri said that she was going to pray for more sober, happy years, the best years of her life.
Her most fulfilling job was at the Women Against Violence shelter, where she worked for 10 years. After retiring, she devoted her time to helping others. She fixed meals for those who were hungry. She provided transportation for those who had none. She organized lots of parties, picnics, and games at their community center. She made an apartment complex into a community, not just a place to live.
Really, Geri did not ever stop working. She gave every day of her life.
Geri would like to thank all of her family and friends who have done awesome acts of kindness through her journey with cancer. God Bless all of you.
Survivors include her four children, Don (Donna) Whitehead, Sturgis, Debra Whitehead, Rapid City, Dennis Whitehead, Florence, AZ, and Duane Whitehead, Keystone; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernitta Keene, Chadron, NE; one brother, Edwin Johnson, Sperryville, VA; her stepfather, Bryon Cox, Chadron, NE; two aunts; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.
A memorial has been established to offset medical bills.

Dorothy M. Nowlin

October 8, 1926 - October 14, 2010

1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Dorothy M. Nowlin, 84, Piedmont, SD died Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont with Pastor Howard Baird officiating. Inurnment will be at the Piedmont Cemetery.

Pauline Louise Block

January 22, 1916 - October 13, 2010

Pauline Louise Block, 94, Sturgis, died Wednesday, 10/13/2010 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A prayer service begins at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 18, 2010 at the Church of Christ in Sturgis with Calvin Chapman officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery.
Pauline was born January 22, 1916 at Crosbyton, TX, to Grady W. and Maude Lee (Johnson) Wilson Sr. She grew up in Texas. She married Morris S. Roe at Hereford, TX. They worked on a farm and Pauline started working as a cook in a restaurant. In the early 1950's they moved to South Dakota where Pauline worked as a cook in the Westerner and Coffee Cup Cafés in Sturgis.
Pauline married Jake Block in Sturgis in 1955.
She started the El Toro; the first restaurant to offer Mexican food in South Dakota. She operated the Taco House in Rapid City until moving to Faith, SD, where she operated the Gold Spread Café. After returning to Sturgis she opened Pauline's Snack Bar in the Meade County Courthouse until she retired.
Pauline was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and painting.
Survivors include her son Edsel (Carol) Roe, Rapid City; brothers, Elvin Wilson, Hereford, TX, D.D. (Norma) Wilson, Bartlesville, OK, Larry (Bobbie) Wilson, Faith, SD; sisters, Estelle Hopson, Sturgis, Sue (Keith) Keffeler, Sturgis; also 9 grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sons; Monty and Wendell Roe, brother Grady Wilson Jr. and sister Gertrude Millard.

Martha M. Sabo

May 21, 1918 - October 8, 2010

2:00 pm Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Martha M. Sabo, 92, Buffalo, SD, died Friday, October 8, 2010 at the West River Health Services in Hettinger, ND.
Visitation will be noon until 5 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Buffalo Community REC Center with Pastor Henry Mohagen and Pastor Milton Douglas officiating. Burial follows at the Buffalo Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Slim Buttes Lutheran Church and the Buffalo Gospel Tabernacle.
Martha was born May 21, 1918 at the Erik Swenson farm near Haynes, ND, to Conrad and Anna C.V. (Eklof) Anderson. When she was two weeks old she was driven by covered wagon to the homestead of her parents.
She began school at Hoffman, MN, while staying with an aunt. The next two school terms were spent in country schools in Harding County. The next school years were spent in the Buffalo school. She graduated from high school in 1935 and attended Black Hills Teachers College the following term. She earned a First Grade Certificate entitling her to teach elementary school. She taught at Lone Tree, the Lei School for two terms, Mud Butte and the Dunn School, all in Harding County. She also attended summer school for two summers.
Martha married Julius Richard "Dick" Smith on October 6, 1940. They lived on several different ranches after the 1939-40' school term was finished. God gave them 12 children, eleven of whom grew to adulthood. Their first child, JoAnn Linnea, died after cancer surgery in 1945. At that time they were living on the Joe Coffman place, now owned by Dave Penn. From there they moved to the Leines place north east of Buffalo.
They leased the former Jake Anderson place south east of Buffalo, which they eventually purchased. Their children attended a country school for several years until they purchased the former Al Dean house in Buffalo where Martha stayed with the children during the school term.
Faith in an omnipotent God formed an important segment of Martha's life. Churches attended were Grand River Lutheran where she was confirmed in 1934, and the Gospel Tabernacle and the Slim Buttes AFLC congregation at Reva. She taught Adult Sunday School Class several years.
Dick died May 1, 1977. After his death she cared for four elderly people.
On November 6, 1980 she married Ivan Sabo and spent 8 happy years in his ranch home. Ivan died January 26, 1989 leaving her alone in that home near Reva. She moved to Buffalo in 1998 and lived there until her death.
Survivors include her sons; Richard (Marie) Smith, Redig, Conrad (Kaye) Smith, Ludlow, Ken (Carol) Smith, Dave (Paula) Smith, Fred (Karen) Smith, and Ed Smith, all of Buffalo; daughters, Carol (Wes) Schalesky, Newell, Margaretta Ladson, Belle Fourche, Venoy (Willie) Tenold, Reva, Evie (Dan) Flees, Augusta, KS; cousins, Linnea Forthun, Hettinger, ND, Walter and Gus Eklof, Minneapolis, MN; also 33 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; two nieces, Margie (Tom) Olson, Joelen (Jerry) Knutson; two nephews, Jim (Shirley) Smith, Darrell (Kathy) Smith.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, JoAnn; parents, both husbands, one brother, Carl Anderson, one great grandson, Tyrel Brengle, one grandson in law, Chris Collins, one son George Smith and one great granddaughter, Stefawni Schalesky and one son in law, Gene Ladson, one nephew, Don Smith.
Some of her greatest joys were visiting with friends and family, spending time with grandkids, great grandkids and great great grandkids, reading the Bible while her eyesight was still good, her four p.m. visit with her good friend, Tyyne, having coffee with her kids when they showed up, and talking about things the way they used to be.

Flavis Bertrand

September 6, 1918 - October 7, 2010

Service was held:

10:30 am Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Flavis Bertrand, 92, Newell, died Thursday, October 7, 2010, at his residence in Newell, SD.
Visitation will be Tuesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the rosary service.
A rosary will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell. A mass follows at 10:30 a.m. with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Newell.
Flavis was born on the old family homestead south of Clark in 1918 to Lexzy and Myrtle (Mack) Bertrand. His first education was in a one-room country school after which he graduated from Clark High School.
Flavis worked one season as a harvest hand and then decided that there must be something better out west. He wandered out to California where he remained for the next forty years; He met and married the girl who would be his helpmate for the next 66 years, Eleanor Tomich. They returned to South Dakota in 1977 to enjoy the peace and quiet.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor Bertrand, Newell; one brother; two sons and two daughter-in-laws; one daughter and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two sisters, and one brother.
A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church or the choice of the donor.
