DOUGLAS EARL HENDERSON

The service for Douglas Earl Henderson, 72, Milbank, will be 2:00 pm Friday, November 23, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen with Pastor Wiese officiating. Douglas died on November 19 at Milbank, SD.

Visitation will be Friday, November 23 from 12pm-2pm at the funeral home.

Douglas was born on June 12, 1935 in Seymour, MO to Paul & Mildred Henderson. The family moved to Leola, SD early in his life.

He served a short time in the Army. He was married to Beverly Wittnebel and to this union four children were born.

He married Karen Pies and he had three step children.

Douglas worked for farmers until 1976 when he went to work for John Deere. He worked for John Deere until 1992 when his health caused him to retire. Douglas was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank and the Sportsmen Club in Britton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Douglas also liked to work on small engines, cutting meat, and woodworking.

Grateful for having shared Douglas’ life are his wife, Karen, Milbank; four children, Michael (Charlene) Henderson, Clark, SD; Mark Henderson, Henry, SD; Marilyn (Nyle) Jenson, Westport; Shirley (Jerry) Fuss, Gwinner, ND; three step children, Steve (Claudia) Chell, Alexandria, MN; Lisa (David) Kolden, Milbank; Jacqueline Chell, Huron; twelve grandchildren; five step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; twin brother, Dallas (Kay) Henderson, Wetonka; brother, Dean Larry (Peggy) Henderson, Dallas, TX; one sister, Ramona Baker, Dallas, TX; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Henderson, Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Paul Henderson.

THERESA WEISMANTEL

The funeral service for Theresa Weismantel, 93, Aberdeen will be at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts officiating. Theresa was called to her eternal home on Sunday, November 18, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 4-6:30 P.M. Tuesday with a prayer service at 6:30pm. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Theresa C. Eichler was born on May 28, 1914 to Martin & Tillie (Siefkies) Eichler at their farm home north of Columbia, SD. She grew up and attended school in the area. On June 17, 1937, she married Edwin Weismantel at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Columbia, SD. They made their home on a farm near Columbia until 1975 when they moved to Aberdeen. Edwin died on March 9, 1991.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons, Paul (Barbara) Weismantel, Holt, MI; Mark (Charleen) Weismantel, Madison, SD; one sister, Alice (Martin) Wegehaupt, Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren, Dawn (Tom) Higgins, Vancouver, WA; David (Arlene) Weismantel, East Lansing, MI; Lori (Paul) Mack, Lansing, MI; Tom Weismantel, Brookings, SD; Mary (Larry) Wilson, AZ, John (Debbie) Aldrich, OR; and Gary Bretsch, a special cousin who was more like another son.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; her parents, Martin and Tillie Eichler; one son, Wallace Weismantel and his wife, Beverly; and one brother, Harvey Eichler.

FLORENCE E. JOHNSON

The funeral service for Florence E. Johnson, 110, of Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor James E. Clarke officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Florence died Friday, November 16 at Manorcare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Monday at the funeral home.

Florence Emily Johnson was born in Aberdeen, SD on July 18, 1897 to Ronald and Emma S. (Hedley) Johnson. This is where she attended school and graduated with the Class of 1916 from Aberdeen Central High School. She was employed as a secretary with the Milwaukee Railroad and retired in 1962. After her retirement she continued to live in Aberdeen. She served “Meals on Wheels” and volunteered at Howard Hedger as a first grade foster grandmother.

Florence was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 96 years, becoming a member in 1911. She was also in Women’s Club, Yelduz Women’s Auxiliary, Milwaukee Women’s Club, and the Presbyterian Ladies Circle #5. Florence was also a member of the Whispering Hope ladies group.

Florence enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends. Florence was known for making Crab Apple jelly, which she loved to give as gifts. After her retirement, Florence was able to travel extensively.

Grateful for having shared Florence’s life are her great nephew, Rob Johnson & family, her second cousins Jeanne Dell, Raymond & Alta Dell, Tom & Sandy Wilkie, Gerry & Kathy Wilkie, Margo & Rodney Kaleva, Shirley & Barry Dunn, Ann McKay, her third cousins; Ronald Dell, Stanley Dell, Carol Otten, Donavan Dell, Diane Ensz, Laurie Steilow, John & Peggy Dell, David Dell and her many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Emma, her brother, Grant Johnson, her sister, Hazel McLaughlin and her nephew, Robert Johnson.

Thomas C. Ashbaugh

Tom Ashbaugh, 82, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Tuesday November 13 at Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness.

Services Friday, November 16, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, IA. Rev. Ethan Sayler officiating.

Visitation: Thursday from 1-9 P.M. with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com

Burial will be at 11 am, Saturday at Wayside Cemetery, Frederick, SD with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. is in charge of arrangements.

Tom was born on February 5, 1925 in Frederick, South Dakota to William and Charlotte (Pew) Ashbaugh. Tom was educated in Frederick, South Dakota. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1946 in Germany, France, and Czechoslovakia. In 1949 he re-enlisted with the Army and served as a military escort stationed in Illinois until 1952 escorting some 100 soldiers home for burial. Tom was previously married to Ada Fern Walker. He worked for a short time for the city of Paullina, Iowa, McLaughlin Electric in Cherokee, Iowa and also the city of Evansville, Wisconsin.

In 1959 Tom opened Tom’s Shoe Repair and operated this business until 1969 before moving to Denver where he worked in major shops there. He returned to Cherokee in 1982 and reopened Tom’s Shoe Repair which he operated until his retirement.

Tom is survived by two sons, Roger Ashbaugh and his wife, Julie, Meriden, Iowa and Daniel Ashbaugh, Arvada, Colorado; one daughter, Carolyn Kriener, Arvada, Colorado; one step-daughter, Merriellen Bedosky, Binghamton, New York; one grandson, Chris Ashbaugh, Boulder, Colorado; one granddaughter, Emily Ashbaugh, Arvada, Colorado; four sisters, Klee Randolph and her husband, David, Marshall, Wisconsin; Jeanette Kindt and her husband, Ron, LaCresent, Minnesota; Lois Schnabel and her husband, Rueben, Evansville, Wisconsin; Genevieve Fellows, Evansville, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert “Buck”, Joe, Arthur, and Wallace Ashbaugh ; sisters, Mary Schnabel, Virginia Eichelberg, and Dorothy Ashbaugh; brothers-in-law, Walter Schnabel, Oscar Eichelberg, and Curtis Fellows.

TIMOTHY B. VEARRIER

The funeral service for Timothy Brian Vearrier, 45, Aberdeen, will be 10:30 am Monday, November 19, 2007 at Richland Wesleyan Church with Pastor Ron Wickard officiating. Burial will be 2:00 pm at Riverside Memorial Park. Timothy died Wednesday, November 14 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation will be from 2-7 pm Sunday with a prayer service at 7 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Timothy Vearrier was born on December 28, 1961 at Mitchell, SD to Del & Beverly (Schmida) Vearrier. He grew up and attended school in Huron, SD. He graduated from Huron High School with the class of 1981. He entered the US Air Force in 1983 and was honorably discharged in 1986.

On July 4, 1985 he married Teresa Bowman at Rapid City, SD. In June of 1986 they moved to Aberdeen where he worked for Aberdeen TV & Appliance, Clark Engineering, Candy Service & in 1988 went to work for 3M.

Timothy loved spending time with his family. He liked working out at the YMCA, model cars, and eagles.

Grateful for having shared Timothy’s life are his wife, Teresa; son, Skyler; daughter, Shasta; mother, Beverly Vearrier, Rapid City, one brother, Scott Vearrier, Rapid City; and six sisters, Linda (Ken) Schuh, Aberdeen; Diane (Gary) Jernigan, South Carolina; Barb (Ken) Murphy, Rapid City; Brenda (Steve) Howard, Rapid City; Robin (Gregg) Jankord, Huron; Lisa (Jack) Wollman, Huron.

He is preceded in death by his father, Del Vearrier.

CONSTANCE JENSEN

The funeral service for Constance (Connie) Vilo Jensen, 89, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00am Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home; 1111 S. Main St. with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Connie died Wednesday, November 14 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be on Friday, November 16, from 1-7pm at the funeral home with family present from 5-7pm.

Constance (Connie) Vilo Jensen was born September 2, 1918 at Pierre, SD to Hjalmar & Clara (Pederson) Larsen. Connie grew up in Pierre and played piano in school. After graduating from high school, she taught grade school in the Pierre area.

Connie married Louis Jensen on October 10, 1937 in Mellette, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen and the surrounding area throughout the years. Connie cared for her family over the years before taking a job at the Beanbag Grocery Store in Aberdeen. She then worked at Avera Mother Joseph Manor and later provided day care out of her home.

During Connie’s spare time she loved to do crossword puzzles, read, and play cards. She especially enjoyed baking and spending time with her family.

Grateful for having shared Connie’s life are her children, Kenneth (Donna) Jensen, Aberdeen; Harlan Jensen, Duluth, MN; Lewis (Mary) Jensen Duluth, MN, Oswald Jensen, Golden Valley, MN; Richard (Sheryl) Jensen, Bath, SD; Beverly Jensen Olson, Aberdeen; Lyle Jensen, Duluth, MN; Juanita (Tim) Haas, Athol, SD; Lila (Calvin) Herman, Littleton, CO; and Carol (Daniel) Wolf, Aberdeen; her sister Luella Kenedy, Aberdeen; 31 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Jensen; one infant son LeRoy, one infant daughter Cynthia; her parents, one brother LeRoy, one sister Norma Summers, an infant granddaughter, Tammy Jensen and a great granddaughter, Michaela Brewster.

MARVIN MILBRANDT

The funeral service for Marvin Gene Milbrandt, 65, Groton is 10:00 am Friday, November 16, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church, Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Marvin died Monday, November 12, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

Visitation is Thursday from 1-4 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home and 5-7 pm at Zion Lutheran Church with a wake celebrating Marvin’s life at 7 pm at the church.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Aberdeen, SD. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 to 4pm and 5-7 pm at the church on Thursday and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marvin was born on September 13, 1942, to Elmer and Elaine (Rippleman) Milbrandt. He spent his childhood in the Columbia, Bath and Aberdeen areas. In 1961 he graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.

In his early years, he worked at Karl’s Tune-Up, Martin-Edwards Auto and with his father, Elmer, farming and working construction.

On April 11, 1964, Marvin wed Nadine Sager of Groton. They made their first home near Westport and in the fall of 1965 they moved to Nadine’s family farm in rural Groton.

Along with farming, Marvin had a shop where he built and repaired machinery for himself and others. He began building stack movers for himself and his talents grew into a manufacturing and hay hauling business. At the time of his 2006 retirement, Marvin and his son, Greg, had just finished building the 100th stackmover.

In the early 1970s Marvin began competing in tractor pulls with his John Deere tractors. Returning from a long trip to Bird Island, MN to borrow a tractor-pulling sled for a competition in Groton, he sat down, designed a pulling sled and built it. After what began as a hobby of pulling tractors, Marvin moved further back on the track. For 15 years, he owned and operated the machine that was pulled by the tractors. After traveling with his family throughout three states and two Canadian provinces and with the children grown and on their own, he retired from the tractor pulling family.

When Marvin wasn’t working he shared his love of hunting, fishing, motorcycles, car racing and John Deere tractors with his friends and family.

Marvin was a loving and well-loved son, brother, husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend.

Marvin was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. During his membership there he helped build the church as it stands today, was on the church council, was head usher and a deacon, worked with the youth and helped moved several pastors to and from the parish.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Nadine Milbrandt, Groton, SD; daughter, Wendy (Craig) Wayman, Ft. Meade, MD; son, Greg (Julie) Milbrandt, Groton, SD; his mother, Elaine Milbrandt, Aberdeen, SD; four grandchildren, Craig (Brittany) Wayman II, Ft. Hood, TX; Amanda Wayman, Akron, OH; Eric and Jacob Milbrandt, Groton, SD; one great-granddaughter, Savannah Wayman, Ft. Hood, TX; and his many good friends across the country.

Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Elmer, his brother, Wayne, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials in Marvin’s name to North Plains Hospice, 305 South State Street, Aberdeen.

JOHN HENRY WEST

Funeral service for John Henry West, 91, Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Private burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. John died Saturday, November 10 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation will be from 3-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

John Henry West was born on June 24, 1916 at Goree, TX to Robert E. Lee and Inga (Bartlett) West. He grew up and attended school in Munday, TX. He graduated from Munday High School. He worked in the family produce business for several years. On April 22, 1939 he married Ida Goossen at Brookings, SD. In 1941 he was drafted into the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1944. In 1945 he owned and operated United Mattress Company in Selby and Aberdeen until 1959. He then worked as a salesman for various places until he retired. Ida died on September 13, 2006 at Aberdeen.

John was a member of First Baptist Church, Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24, and the Elks Lodge. He served as city commissioner from 1957 to 1962. He loved hunting and fishing. In the past he was active in YMCA, softball and volleyball. He will be greatly missed by his family.

Grateful for having shared John’s life are his sons, Norman (Kathleen) West of Yankton, SD, John Paul (Carolyn) West of Fargo, ND, grandchildren, Jeffrey (Suzanne) West, Timothy (Tracye) West, Elizabeth West, Sarah (Gary) Davis and Anne West, great-grandchildren, Hunter, Hannah, T.J., Annika and Isaac, several nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ida West, brothers, Walter, Raymond, Jack and an infant brother, sisters, Mae Richards, Sarah Jeter and Minnie Wallace.
