VELMA HOFF

The service for Velma Hoff, 83, Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Monday, October 22, 2007 at Plymouth Congregational UCC with Pastor Richard Fylling officiating. Velma died Tuesday, October 16 at Manor Care.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Sunday, October 21 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Velma Virginia Hoff was born on January 27, 1924 at rural Eureka, SD to Edward P. and Magdalena Teske Hoff. She attended a rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Eureka High School in 1942. Then she was employed at Eureka, Mobridge, and Selby areas for a number of years as a secretary and bookkeeper. In 1974 she became employed with the South Dakota Department of Labor until her retirement in May of 1986.

Velma was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church. She was a past member of the Royal Neighbors of America and was a member of the Aberdeen Senior Center. Velma was also a member of Retired and Senior Volunteer Workers. She worked at Alexander Mitchell Library as a volunteer.

Grateful for having shared Velma’s life are her two nieces, Gladys (Vernon) Rohrbach, Ipswich; Lucille Schaefbauer, Miller; two nephews, LeRoy Hoff, Galena, KS; MelRoy Hoff, Story, Wyoming; five great-nieces; and four great-nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward & Magdalena Hoff; brother, Daniel Hoff; and one half-sister, Elsie Wolff.

EUGENIA GEHRING

Services for Eugenia Gehring, 80, Aberdeen, are 10:30 am, Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, Rev. Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Eugenia died Tuesday, October 16 at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7pm Friday, October 19, with family present 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eugenia Eszlinger was born October 30, 1926 to Salomon and Karolina (Salzer) Eszlinger at the family home in Danzig, ND, McIntosh County. She was the youngest of fourteen children. She was baptized and confirmed in German in the Salem Evangelical country church by Rev Knuth one mile from the family farm. She received her eighth grade education at a country school near the family farm. After that, she helped work on the farm and did some babysitting.

She was united in marriage to Ivan Gehring on June 5, 1947, at the EVB parsonage by Rev Carl Bach in Ashley, ND. They made their home on a farm raising small crops, cattle, and chickens. She liked having a garden and flowers. They moved to Aberdeen in 1956.

Eugenia cleaned houses, did ironing, and babysitting for various people in Aberdeen. In 1968 they purchased Economy Grocery where she worked until 1973 when they sold it. She continued to work there until her stroke in September 1995, which put her in the nursing home. Ivan died August 11, 1977.

Eugenia is a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards, dice, and putting puzzles together. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Eugenia’s life are her seven children, Darrell (Bev), Tulsa, OK; Randy (Linda), Tulsa, OK; Sandy (Craig) Brunson, Aberdeen, SD; Steve (Pam), Aberdeen, SD; Greg, Tulsa, OK; Diane (Tim) Thoreson, Aberdeen, SD; Kim (George) Rodriguez, Plano, TX; twenty-three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Speidel, Ashley, ND; sister-in-law, Edna Eszlinger, Ashley, ND; brother-in-law, Ervin Betsch, Aberdeen, SD; mother-in-law, Ida Gehring, Aberdeen, SD.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin daughters, seven brothers, and five sisters.

GENEVIEVE PEARL ZIEGLER

Genevieve Pearl. Pulfrey of Andover, MN, formerly of Pierre, SD. Born April 20, 1921, passed away peacefully October 12, 2007. Preceded in death by husband, John R.; and sister, Mildred (Dale) Ziegler. Survived and will be missed by loving daughters, JeanMarie (Paul) Burtness, and Janet-Lea Harris; granddaughters, Jessica Ann and Dayna Marie Burtness ; siblings, Lourene Pulfrey, Robert E. Pulfrey, and John Winter Pulfrey; and other relatives and friends. Genevieve was a graduate of Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD, an active member of both the UCC Church, and D.A.R., and retired from SD State Library. Funeral Service 3PM Tuesday 10/16 at Spitzer Funeral Home. Visitaion one hour before service. Additional services held Monday in Coon Rapids, MN. Interment Riverside Memorial Cemetery Aberdeen, SD.

LARRY J. SCHMIDT

The service for Larry J. Schmidt, 64, Aberdeen will be 11:00 am Thursday, October 11, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Haglund officiating. Larry passed away Monday, October 8, 2007 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Larry James Schmidt was born on April 26, 1943 to Eric and Bertha Schmidt in Rugby, ND. He graduated in 1961 from Granville High School in North Dakota. He married Ronda R. Rahrick on October 28, 1977 in Watertown.

Larry was an honest, hardworking man who enjoyed restoring cars, woodworking, watching NASCAR and boxing, and dancing. He also loved to cruise around in his classic vehicles, and cherished spending time with his cat, George. Larry was the best dad and husband ever.

Grateful for having shared Larry’s life are his wife, Ronda, Aberdeen; three daughters, Amber Schmidt, Rochester, NY, Wendy Schmidt, Aberdeen, Theresa (Keith) Christian, St. Paul, MN; and sister, Evelyn (LaVern) Eide, Red Wing, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Julius Schmidt, Frederick “Fritz” Schmidt; sister, Shirley Peterson; and son, Larry Schmidt, Jr.

MARTIN T. OLSON, JR.

Graveside service for Martin T. Olson, Jr., 78, Wichita Falls, TX and Aberdeen will be 1:00 pm, Friday, October 12, 2007 at Langford Cemetery with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Martin died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Manor Care in Aberdeen.

Martin was born February 5, 1929 to Martin Sr., & Caroline (Rygg) Olson at Langford, SD. He was baptized, confirmed, and is a member of Langford Lutheran Church.

Martin married Marilyn Jones, his childhood sweetheart. They lived in Montana, Texas, and South Dakota throughout his lifetime.

Martin was a generous, happy-go-lucky, loving man. He always thought of others first. He was a mechanically inclined inventor, enjoyed the outdoors, and liked to watch western shows John Wayne, Gunsmoke, Bananza, & Andy Griffith. He had a sharp wit and would read to the grandchildren with the book upside down making up stories as he went. He portrayed the Marlboro Man & John Wayne. Martin’s positive attitude and the way he lived life is revealed in Philippians 4:11 “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.”

Grateful for having shared Martin’s life are his true love, Marilyn, daughter, Natalie Olson, Huron, SD; son, Colby, Wichita Falls, Texas; three grandchildren, Clint, Rachel, & Hunter; two sisters, Jermaine Olson, Vella (Jim) Hougen; one brother, Owen Olson, & several nieces and nephews who are so very special to him; Leone Lindgren, Tom Jones, Sr., Faye Stack, Sharon Jones & Gwen Krage; who loved hime dearly. Also, his many Montana, Texas and South Dakota friends.

Martin is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Charles.

The family asks that memorials be sent to the Olson family, Box 1794, Aberdeen, SD 57401.

ESTHER RUTH ZINTER

Funeral services for Esther Ruth Zinter, 80, Aberdeen, are 10:30 am, Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Pastor John Farden and Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Burial at 2:30 pm at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ellendale, ND, Albion Township. Esther died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is from 1-7 pm Tuesday, October 9, family present from 5-7, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Esther Ruth Speidel was born November 19, 1926 to Gottlieb and Emma (Rempfer) Speidel at Monango, ND. She attended grade school in Monango and graduated from Ellendale High School. During WWII, Esther acquired a teaching certificate from Normal Industrial College in Ellendale and taught at a rural school near Monango. Esther then worked for the County Welfare Office until she married.

Esther married Arvin Zinter December 28, 1951 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Monango. She worked at the A.S.C.S. Office in Ellendale. Esther and Arvin moved to Minneapolis where she worked for Sears Roebuck and Co. She then devoted her life to raising her family. The family moved to Aberdeen in 1969.

Esther was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where she participated in LWML, Bible study, and sang in the choir. She also volunteered for the Aberdeen Senior Center. Esther enjoyed gardening and sewing. She also liked playing cards, pool, puzzles, and swimming. Esther loved family gatherings. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her strong faith served as a model and legacy to her children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Esther’s life are her husband, Arvin, Aberdeen, three sons; David (Rhonda) Zinter, Milbank, SD, Paul (Cheryl) Zinter, Aberdeen, and Tim (Kari) Zinter, Aberdeen, her daughter, Susanne (Mark) Morlock, Ipswich, SD, eight grandchildren; Kiel (Heather) Zinter, Kevin Zinter, Michael Zinter, Stephanie Zinter, Melanie Zinter, Thomas Zinter, Chrystal Morlock, and Steven Morlock, and one great granddaughter, Hailey Zinter. Esther is also survived by her brother, Christian (Cecil) Speidel, Edgeley, ND, and sister-in-law, Helen Speidel, Menomonie, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Marie Speidel, and two brothers, Arndt and Paul.

ELVINA HASELHORST

Funeral services for Elvina Haselhorst, 87 Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield with Pastor Wesley Hafner officiating. Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mansfield. Elvina died Saturday, October 6 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be Monday from 1-7pm with the family present from 5-7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen

Elvina was born August 11, 1920 to Henry and Anna (Hoegermeier) Kramer on the family farm near Mansfield, South Dakota. She married Otto Haselhorst on October 12, 1940 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield.

Elvina was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home. She was very family orientated and loved her family very much. Elvina enjoyed flowers, attending all high school sporting events, and playing whist.

Elvina was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was active in the church choir, LWML, and the Cresbard Legion Auxiliary. She was also involved in the Let’s Work Together Extension Club, and the Cresbard Coffee Sippers where she enjoyed being around all of her friends.

Grateful for having shared Elvina’s life are her son Dean (Carol) Haselhorst of Chelsea; two granddaughters Michelle (Heath) Kretschmar of Huron and Raquel Haselhorst of Des Moines, IA, three great-grandchildren Samuel and Maxwell Kretschmar and Charles Haselhorst; and two sisters Esther Haselhorst of Minneapolis, MN and Arlis Bacon of Northville.

Elvina is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Anna Kramer, husband Otto, one son Richard, two sisters Lillian Kramer and Verna Schulz, and one brother Elmer Kramer.

FERN A. “SALLY” HOGG

The services for Fern A. “Sally” Hogg, 92, Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Fern died Thursday, October 4, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-5 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Fern A. “Sally” Offerdahl was born January 29, 1915 in Rockham, SD, one of three children of Betsy A. Lunn and Carl M. Offerdahl. She grew up in Rockham, attending both grade school and high school. The family later moved to Aberdeen where she attended her senior year and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. She married Clarence A. Hogg on May 1, 1934 in Aberdeen. She and Clarence moved to Whapeton, ND from 1935 through 1936. She worked with her husband who was District Manager of the National Tea Grocery Company. After returning to Aberdeen, she worked with her husband as he managed the Aberdeen National Tea Grocery Store. Clarence died on June 12, 1988.

She loved to travel with her husband and they traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe. Winters were spent in their homes in Scottsdale, Arizona and later in Sun City West, Arizona. In her earlier years, she especially enjoyed teaching Sunday School to younger children. For years Sally and Clarence would go to Bethesda Nursing Home and assist with communion. An avid bridge player, she enjoyed the friendship of several bridge clubs. Her church, family and friends were of great importance to her.

Sally was a member of Eastern Star, WMS, (Women’s Missionary Society) Bethesda Church Circle, as well as a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was also an associate member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. She served as President of Chapter AX PEO Sisterhood and was honored as a fifty year member. She also belonged to the Chatter Group #5 of PEO Sisterhood in Sun City West.

Grateful for having shared Fern’s life are her two sons, Charles (Peggy) Hogg, Aberdeen; Mark (Sonja) Hogg, Rapid City; her six grandchildren, Stacey (Bryce) Iwerks, Aberdeen; Kristi (Tom) Fluharty, Prior Lake, MN; Lisa (Kurt) Southwick, Sioux Falls; Steve (Jenni) Hogg, Aberdeen; Mike (Sarah) Hogg, Aberdeen; and Jessica Hogg, Denver, CO. She is also survived by nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Ember & Peter.

The family prefers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

WARREN SCHNAIBLE

The memorial service for Warren S. Schnaible, 83, Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm, Friday, October 5, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor D.T. Rawerts officiating from Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Morningside Cemetery in Roscoe. Warren died Tuesday, October 2, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Warren S. Schnaible was born on March 3, 1924 in Mound City, SD to John & Anna Schnaible. He was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mound City. Warren attended country school in the Mound City area and went to the Mound City High School for his first two years and graduated from Java High School High in 1940.

Warren worked at various farms, and then went to Custer, SD to work at the CC Camps for one year. He then went to California and worked at Columbia Steel in Torrance. On May 12, 1943 he was drafted into the army. Warren served during WWII in the Solomon Islands, Philippines, and Japan. He received the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1945. He then worked in Mobridge, SD and in Roscoe, SD.

Warren married Emma Boheman on December 2, 1950. Together they had five children. Emma died on May 1, 1975.

He married Irene Hieb April 2, 1977 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Roscoe, SD.

He worked at Cenex in Roscoe for twenty-eight years until he retired and moved to Aberdeen in 1992.

He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and also of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Grateful for having shared Warren’s life are his wife, Irene Hieb; two sons, Dale (Becci) Schnaible, Pheonix, AZ, John (Diane) Boheman, Sioux Falls, SD; four daughters, Celeste Geier, Hardin, MT, Janny (Rick) Gibson, Torrance, CA, Phyllis (Gerald) Feickert, Aberdeen; Caroline (Roger) Ernst, Mina; nineteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Jo Rei Schnaible, CA; sister, Veryl German, Corona, CA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John & Anna; first wife, Emma; son, Myron; and brother, Herbert.
