Blake Urban

Services for Blake Urban, 62, Aberdeen are 10:30 am, Wednesday, September 12 at Plymouth Congregational Church, Pastor Richard Fylling officiating. Burial will be at Northville Fairview Cemetery at 1:00 pm. Blake died Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Manor Care Health Services.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with family present from 5-7 pm.

Blake was born to Jerome and Esther (Blake) Urban on December 28, 1944, in Gettysburg, South Dakota. Blake attended grade schools in Northville, Armour, and Hecla, and graduated from Central High School, Aberdeen. He took two baccalaureate degrees from Northern State University, a B. S. in Secondary Education in 1969 and a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1975. He taught for 22 years in area schools, retiring from full time teaching in 1995. A gifted and dedicated teacher, he was recognized by his students of merit by being nominated to Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1992.

An avid hunter, Blake also loved to fish, travel, read, research genealogy, garden, organize family gatherings, and help his neighbors and church community. He was a collector of trivia and memorabilia. He was an accomplished musician, played French horn with the university orchestra while attending NSU, was a member of the city band for several years, sang in his church choir, and most recently, loved singing first
tenor with the Aberdeen Men's Chorus.

Blake was a member of the MGT Register and the MGA Register Archivist and he functioned as the historian and research consultant. He competed in national MG car rallies, taking the first place Econothon cup in 1974. For several years, with his brother Mark, he organized and ran a local automobile rally. A member of the Plymouth Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, at various times Blake served as moderator, deacon, parish newsletter editor as well as singing in the church choir.

Blake was a good son and brother, a good teacher and family member, a good Christian, neighbor, and friend. He was a good man.

Grateful for having shared Blake’s life are his mother, Esther (Blake) Urban; his sister and brother-in-law, Kristin Urban and Ross Dahlke, Maribel, WI; his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Marcia (Howie ) Reagan-Urban, Belle Fourche, nephews Herbert and Robert Urban, and nephews by marriage William and Bryan Reagan, Charlotte, NC; area cousins Colleen (Blake) and Selmer Anderson, Cresbard; Merrit and Myrna (McMillan) Blake, Dave and Marla Blake all of Aberdeen; and Rachel and Terry Jundt, Cresbard; additional cousins in Minnesota, North Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, and Washington, and close family friend Beryl Carroll of Aberdeen.

Blake was preceded in death by his father, Jerome Urban; and a cousin, Ronnie Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, cards and memorials are welcome.

AGON NEHLICH

Services for Agon Nehlich, 88, Aberdeen, are 2:00 pm Friday, August 31, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church, Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Agon died Tuesday, August 28 at Manorcare Health Services.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Thursday with family present from 4-6 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Agon Harold Nehlich was born on June 22, 1919 in Eureka, SD to John & Katherina Nehlich. He grew up on the family farm SW of Eureka and attended Bauer District 4 Rural School. As a young man he worked as a hired hand for various farmers in the area.

Prior to entering the US Army in 1941, he worked for the Civil Service Conservation and the National Youth Association. He received his basic training in North Carolina. He served in the European Theatre. He landed in England in January of 1944. He participated in the invasion at Normandy, the Battle of St. Lô, six months throughout Germany, the Battle of the Bulge and the Crossing of the Rhine, to the Elp River and the war ended. Following his discharge, he returned to Eureka and the family farm. On December 16, 1999 he received a medal from the French Government commemorating the heroic acts of US Serviceman who fought for their liberation.

Agon married Ida (Wanner) in 1946 and they moved to Aberdeen. He began work for Jederberg Construction until 1974. He then worked for other Construction Companies and did janitorial work for Peterson & Levi, CPA’S which later was Eide Bailly. Agon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church since 1948.

Grateful for having shared Agon’s life are his wife, Ida Nehlich, Aberdeen; one son, Loren (April) Nehlich, Aberdeen; one daughter, Shirley (Doug) Erickson, Sioux Falls; one brother, Clarence (Doris) Nehlich, Eureka; six grandchildren, Tricia Hansen, Susan (Jason) Schuldt, Ryan (Rebecca) Erickson, Shelly Erickson, Stacey (Robert) Weinmeister, Amy Nehlich; eight great-grandchildren, Shae, Abigail, Alexandra, Lincoln, Gavyn, Ellie, Riley, and Brody.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Herbert and Eldo, and one sister, Melinda Rudolph.

JOHNNIE J. VETCH

The service for Johnnie J. Vetch, 81, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 am, Friday, August 31, at the First Reformed Church with Pastor David Dawn officiating. Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery in Hosmer on Saturday. Johnnie died Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Thursday with family present from 6-7 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Johnnie Joseph Vetch was born on March 2, 1926 at home on the farm two miles south of Roscoe, SD to John & Elizabeth Vetch.

Johnnie attended rural Roscoe School and was then drafted into the military in 1945 and was placed in Okinawa. Johnnie served two years and then came home to Roscoe.

Johnnie married Orma (Stoecker) on December 17, 1948 at the Hosmer Reformed Church. Johnnie and Orma were married for fifty-eight years. Together they had four daughters. Shirley Artz, now deceased, Nancy (Randy) Zantow of Mina, SD, Cindy (Charles) True of Las Vegas, NV, Peggy Maners, Las Vegas, NV.

Johnnie was a wonderful grandfather to six grandkids, Courtney (Jason) Seelhort, Minot Air Force Base ND, Lacey (Trent) Weig, Mina, SD, Trevor Zantow, Leola, SD, Lindsay (Rob) Rudd, Sac City, IA, Dezzaray True, Jonathan True both of Las Vegas, and nine great-grandchildren, Braedon, Elizabeth, Michael Seelhorst, Chelsea, Dillon, Logan Weig, Jenna, Kallie Zantow, Carson Rudd; two brothers, Paul Vetch, LeRoy Vetch; four sisters, Ida Bradke, Bernice Buechler, Walburga Zambo, and Gladys Preszler.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, one brother, and two sisters.

Johnnie was employed with the Aberdeen Public Works Department for thirty-eight years.

Johnnie was a member of the First Reformed Church of Aberdeen for fifty-eight years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the VFW.

Johnnie always made time for family. He enjoyed playing cards, camping, fishing, traveling, and woodworking during retirement, playing pool, and dancing.

HULDA ARLT

The funeral service for Hulda Arlt, 88, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm Friday, August 31, 2007 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Hulda died Monday, August 27, 2007, at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1-7 pm Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111, S. Main St.

Hulda Miller was born on January 26, 1919 inVenturia, ND to William & Lydia (Bender) Miller. She grew up on a farm near Venturia, where she also attended school. Her mother died when she was six weeks old. Her step-mother died when she was young and she went to live with her grandparents. At the age of twelve she had to start caring for her grandparents.

On December 10, 1936, Hulda married Edwin Arlt at the age of eighteen in Venturia, ND together they lived on a farm near Ashley, ND. In 1942 they moved to a farm near Aberdeen. They then moved to Lodi, CA in 1969 where she worked in a rehabilitation center for the hospital. In 1974 they moved back to SD, near Richmond Lake. Hulda moved into the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in 2004.

Hulda’s first job was helping her husband on the farm. She enjoyed fruit and vegetable gardening and growing flowers. She loved to cook and bake for others. She liked caring for others, and for many years she took in five of her cousins to care for.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Berdella Spilde of Donna, TX and Sharon Fischer of Columbia, SD, eight grandchildren, Dawn (Robert) Armfield of Aberdeen, Ronald Spilde of Aberdeen, Donald Spilde of San Antonio, TX, Melody (Jonathan) Reed of York, PA, Shauna (Mike) Noonan of Colorado Springs, CO, Troy (Alison) Fischer of Ellendale, ND, Renae (Brad) Fischer of Aberdeen, and Brian (Lisa) Fischer of Aberdeen, her brother Norman Miller of Baraboo, WI, fourteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Hulda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, great granddaughter, Taylor Fischer, two sisters, two brothers, and ten step-brothers and step-sisters.

Mildred N. QUAM

Inurnment for Mildred N. Quam, 83, of Aberdeen will be at 1:00pm, Wednesday, August 29, at Riverside Memorial Park. Mildred died Friday, August 24, 2007 at the Aberdeen Health & Rehab Center in Aberdeen.

Mildred N. Quam was born at Scotland, SD on December 29, 1924 to John and Myrtle (Dickman) Berg.

Mildred enjoyed sewing, doing crafts, and gardening. She also loved fishing and dogs.

Grateful for having shared Mildred’s life are Yvonne Fogel of Aberdeen, Marie (Eugene) Haux of Mina, Mavis Cox of Fredrick, Arvid Eldeen Jr., Ellene Eldeen of Spearfish. Two brothers Vernon Berg of Baltic, and Ole Berg of Philippines, one sister Agnes Tellinghuisen of Fall City WA. She is also survived by 12 Grandchildren, 21 Great-grandchildren, and 3 Great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son LeRoy, her parents John and Myrtle Berg, seven brothers Harry, Leo, Melvin, Leonard, Donald, Earl, Leonard, and one sister Viola.

Mary Hunstad

Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Irene Hunstad, 98, is 10:30 am, Friday, August 31, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Christopher Hughes officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Mary died Friday, August 24, 2007 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 2-7pm, Thursday with a liturgical wake service with rosary at 7 pm. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Mary I. McNeary was born on November 9, 1908 at Aberdeen, SD to John & Mary (Cunniff) McNeary. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. She then attended Northern Normal where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school at Richmond.

On July 15, 1935 she married Otto Hunstad at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen. Otto died on June 12, 1997 at Aberdeen. In 2002 she moved into the Nano Nagel and later into Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Mary was a member of the Alter Society and the choir. She loved to play Bridge. She enjoyed her visits from Blacky & Browny, two Miniature Dash hounds. Mary especially loved her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Mary’s life are her son, Ed (Corrine) Hunstad, Aberdeen; her grandchildren, Tonia Hunstad, Quentin Hunstad & his fiancé, Candace Bush, Nancy (Larry) Heiser, Tammy (Kurt) Waters, David Walker; and her great-grandchildren, Gavin Green, Jeremiah Heiser, Meagan Meyer, Alese Waters, Gabrielle Waters, Madeline Waters, and Brynn Waters.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John & Mary; husband, Otto; brother, John McNeary, and four sisters, Beatrice McHugh, Eleanor McDonald, Kathleen Johnson, and Elizabeth Goick.

Elfriede Onken

The memorial service for Elfriede Wilhelmine Friederike Onken, 75, of Aberdeen, will be 3:00 pm Monday, August 24 at Savo Lutheran Church in Frederick, SD with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Elfriede died Friday, August 24, 2007 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Elfriede Wilhelmine Friederike Onken was born on July 31, 1932 in Westerstede, Germany to Johann & Hilde (tom Diek) Janssen. She was baptized on August 21, 1932 and confirmed on March 30, 1947 in St. Petri Lutheran Church. She had her first communion in April of 1947. She attended school and attended business college in Germany. In 1954 she immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Ellendale, ND.

On February 11, 1955 she married Fred Onken in Leola, SD. They made a home on a farm near Frederick, SD. In May 1993, Fred died in Ellendale. Elfriede continued to live on the farm until 2004 when she moved to Aberdeen, SD.

Elfriede was a member of Savo Lutheran Church, Frederick, SD where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, directed choir for thirteen years, and was a member of ALCW.

She enjoyed literature, art, gardening, arranging flowers, photography, painting (watercolors), knitting, crocheting, working on the computer and traveling. She also played and taught the mandolin, played piano and accordion.

Grateful for having shared Elfriede’s life are her daughter, Marina Onken, Hudson, WI; son, Fritz (Julene) Onken, Lawrenceville, GA; brother Guenther (Erika) Janssen, Germany, and two grandchildren, Christoffer Onken and Jenna Onken.

Elfriede was preceded in death by her parents, Johann & Hilde Janssen; and her husband, Fred Onken.

Ralph K. Hafsos

The service for Ralph K. Hafsos will be 11:00 am Monday, August 27, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Ralph died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 2-7 pm on Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Ralph K. Hafsos was born on January 24, 1915 at Great Falls, MT to Martin & Gertrude (Davis) Hafsos. At the age of ten the family moved to Aberdeen where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1934 and then went into business with his father at Hafsos Lumber Products until he retired.

Ralph was a past member of Elks, Moose, and AA. He enjoyed NASCAR Racing and baseball.

Grateful for having shared Ralph’s life are his sister, Kathryn (Arthur) Keeley; two nephews, Jerry (Edna) Keeley, James (Carol) Keeley; and special friends, Ron & Deb Droog.

Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, Martin & Gertrude Hafsos.

FRED GERTH

Services for Fred Gerth, 74, Aberdeen, are 1:00 pm, Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial at Riverside Cemetery. Fred died Monday, August 20 at the Aberdeen Health and Rehab Center.

Visitation: 1-7 pm Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Grateful for having shared Fred’s life are his son, Doug (Romey Jo Gerth); one daughter, Debbie Riepl, Aberdeen; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Genevieve (Elroy) Johnson, Aberdeen.
