Memorial Service for Alice L. Wilson, 81, Deadwood and formerly of Aberdeen is 10:30 am, Friday, April 8, 2005 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastors John Farden and Jais Tinglund officiating. Inurnment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alice died Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Northern Hills General Hospital in Deadwood.

Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE is in charge of arrangements.

Alice was born March 4, 1924 at Hosmer, SD to Edward and Anna (Job) Albrecht. She grew up in the Leola-Wetonka area. She married Richard Clinton Wilson in Aberdeen. They made their home in Wetonka for a short time before moving to Aberdeen. She worked at the Kresge Store and at Artz Camera Supply Store for many years. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing cards.

Alice was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Deadwood and was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, SD.

Grateful for having shared her life are: her husband, Richard Wilson, Deadwood and formerly Aberdeen, son and daughter-in-law; Ron (Cassie) Wilson, Aberdeen, SD, , her Grandchildren Greg (Michelle) Wilson, Joelle (Dale) Thone, Aberdeen, SD, Mark Wilson, Fargo, ND, Great-Grandchildren; Josh, Ashley, Nathan, Tyler, Megan and Makayla, four brothers; Herbert Albrecht, Sturgis, SD, Melvin (Vange) Albrecht, Deadwood, SD, Paul (Helen) Albrecht, Grass Valley, CA and Thomas (Shirley) Albrecht, Finley, ND, three sisters; Martha (Milbert) Jerke, Aberdeen, SD AnnaMae (Harold) Bauer, Gettysburg, SD and Marcella Bonnet, Tempe, AZ

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Gertrude Kreitel and three brothers, Milbert Albrecht, Albert Albrecht and Allen Albrecht.

The family prefers memorial to North Plains Hospice, 305 S. State St. Aberdeen, SD 57401.

JAY A. BULLIS

Services for Jay A. Bullis, 70, Aberdeen, are 2:00 pm Monday, April 4, 2005 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Pastor John Farden and Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Inurnment at Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date. Jay died Tuesday, March 29 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation: 2-7pm Sunday at the Spitzer Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church.

Jay A. Bullis was born on August 3, 1934 to Jim and Pearle (Colvill) Bullis at home near Nashua, MN. He grew up in that area and attended school at District 61. Jay then graduated from 8th grade at Wendal, MN.

Jay married Marge Hoffman in 1974 at Alexandria, SD.

Jay was a carpenter in construction for many years. He worked for Fred Flateau and then Haram Cooper in the Nashua area. Later he worked for Asp Construction in Fargo, ND area. After the company closed, Jay worked for Nordling Construction until an accident forced him to retire. He then started a hobby farm with his family near Aberdeen.

Jay was a board member of the Walleye Club. He was an avid fisherman and spent much of his time on the water. Jay enjoyed using his skills in carpentry to make and fix furniture for his friends. The horses and cows on their hobby farm brought Jay great joy. Nothing could compare to joy and pride he had in his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marge, Aberdeen; four sons: Harry (Kim) Bullis, West Fargo, ND, Danny (Cindy) Bullis, Moorehead, MN, Scott (Donna) Hoffman, Upton, WY, and Kory (Kim) Bullis, Fargo, ND; three daughters: Janice Tollefson, Tammi Cole both of West Fargo, ND; Lisa Dyce, Aberdeen; eight grandchildren: Robbie Bullis, Chris Bullis, Jay Svir, Lacy Cole, Matt Bullis, Amanda Bullis, Ty Tollefson, and Hannah Bullis; brother: Wally (Deloris) Bullis, Elbow Lake, MN; three sisters: Joanne (Gary) Van Wechel, Fergus Falls, MN, Vione (Mike) Westhoff, Wyoming, MN, and Verna (Kirk) Smee, California and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family prefers friends to come dressed casually in jeans.

HOWARD C. WESTBY

The funeral service for Howard C. Westby, 83 of Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Howard died Monday, March 28 at Banner Gardens Hospice House, Mesa, Arizona.

Visitation: 1 to 7 pm Friday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen. Prayer service: 7pm Friday followed by Masonic Rites.

Howard C. Westby was born on March 17, 1922 at rural Veblen, SD to Arthur and Lena (Peterson) Westby.

He worked with his father and brother on the farm until he entered the U. S. Army in 1944. Part of his military service was spent in the South Pacific on the islands of Guam and Saipan. Howard received an honorable discharge in 1946 and started working as a salesman for Pirmantgen-Kaiser in Sisseton. On August 17, 1947, he married Jeanne Holland and they continued to make their home in Sisseton until 1964 when they moved to Aberdeen where he worked for the Monzel Company. Howard retired in 1986 and when Jeanne retired in 1988 they started traveling, having spent the past 17 winters at the Mesa Regal R. V. Resort in Mesa, AZ.

Howard was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was involved in the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, American Legion, V. F. W., and the dance committee at Mesa Regal.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jeanne, Aberdeen; two sons, Richard (Ellen) Westby, Kent, WA, James (Tana) Westby, Aberdeen, SD; one daughter, Michelle (William) Ellsworth, Lynnwood, WA; two sisters, Arlene (Scotty) Evenson, Sweet Home, OR, Delores Eggen, Sisseton, SD; mother-in-law, Myrtle Holland, Sissteon, SD; seven grandchildren, Mark (Kena), Bryce, Tasha, Trevin, Stephanie, Grant, Cody, and five great grandchildren, Kamille, Dean, Adalyn, Garett and Holden.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roy, Kenneth & Ervin; three sisters, Irene Laing, Ruby Christiansen, Norma Westby and father-in-law, Richard Holland.

JOHN N. “JOHNNIE” HARTMAN

Funeral services for John N. “Johnnie” Hartman, 87, of Canistota, SD, formerly of Aberdeen, are 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at Spitzer Funeral Home with Father Gregory Tschakert officiating. Burial following at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Aberdeen. Mr. Hartman died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center, Canistota.

Arrangements by Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 9 am to the time of service on Wednesday all at the funeral home.

John Hartman was born on November 18, 1917 at Aberdeen, SD to John and Barbara (Brossart) Hartman. He attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and Central High School. He owned and operated a tree service business for many years in Aberdeen. In 1984 he entered the Canistota Good Samaritan Center in Canistota.

He was a former active member of the Eagle’s and served as a past president.

Grateful for having shared his life are: two brothers; Walter (Madeline) Hartman of Aberdeen, James (Esther) Hartman of Sioux Falls, SD and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Barbara, three brothers, Martin, Frank and Joe, two sisters, Annie Daly and Veronica Hartman.

Casket bearers will be Don Daly, Dennis Daly, Ron Hartman, Craig Hartman and Marvin Ishmael.

HURST E. WILLIAMS

Funeral services for Hurst E. Williams, 85, Aberdeen, formerly of Brentford, are 10:30 am Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Brentford UCC Congregational Church, Rev. Jon Damaska officiating. Burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Williams died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Bethesda Home, Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7:30 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer Funeral Home, Aberdeen, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm and Masonic Rites at 8:30 pm.

Hurst Edwin Williams was born September 11, 1919, in Aberdeen, to Lyle and Edith (Hurst) Williams. He graduated from Brentford High School in 1938. He attended Northern State College for two years, then began farming with his father.

On June 24,1943, he married Mildred “Millie” Eunice Dunker on her family farm near Stratford.

Hurst farmed in the Brentford area until his retirement. The family farm is now on the fourth generation of Williams. He used his musical talent playing piano and organ by ear and singing for many events. Hurst was organist for the Northwestern Snow Queen contest for over 40 years and for Grand Lodge of South Dakota over 20 years. He was a member of the Brentford Congregational United Church of Christ and for many years directed the choir, sang, was church organist, held leadership positions & was involved in Prairie Lake Association. Hurst was also a member of the Plains Lions Club, Brentford Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, and the Yeldez Shrine. He was an Honorary Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of South Dakota and a long-time member of the Shrine Chanters. Hurst was a faithful fan of Brentford & Northwestern school activities and befriended many elderly neighbors.

He is survived by his loving wife Millie and children Dan (Snow) Williams, Atlanta, GA, Pam (Donald) Kettering, Yankton, SD, Max (Heidi) Williams, Brentford, SD, and Tas (Paul) Tellinghuisen, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren: Derek Williams, Devin Williams, Lance (Candie) Kettering, Heather Kettering, Colin (Meagan) Williams, and Jenna Williams; four great grandchildren: Jessica Jennings, Amber Kettering, Hunter Jeschke, and Maddie Williams; and many nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Joy Solinsky.

MARJORY L. WALKER

Graveside service for Marjory L. Walker, 83, Aberdeen, is 1:00 pm, Friday, March 25 at Riverside Memorial Park, Pastor James Clarke officiating. Mrs. Walker died Thursday, February 10, 2005 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Arrangements by Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen.

Marjory L. Walker was born on November 24, 1921 at Aberdeen, SD to Edward C. and Amy L. (Olson) Dilly. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1938. She then attended Northern State College where she received her teaching certificate in 1940. She taught school in Bowdle, Selby and Robinson, ND. She also taught at the Wheatley School in Washington DC from 1943 to 1946. She also attended George Washington University. She was secretary for the Naval Office while in Washington, DC. In 1946 she moved back to Aberdeen where she worked for EMBA Insurance Co. as secretary. She then taught school in Webster and Robinson, ND.

On June 10, 1978 she married Woodrow “Bus” Walker at Rapid City, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen, SD. Mr. Walker died on March 9, 1990 at Aberdeen, SD. She resided at Aberdeen Living Center for the past several years. Following her husband's passing, her cousin Jerauldine M. Dilly Johnson and her husband Howard B. Johnson, Aberdeen, looked after her to some extent. Since their passing, her cousin Darlene Dilly Kelzer, New Prague, MN, and the Johnson children have looked after her: Julie M. Johnson, Pierre and Mitchell, Anita Johnson Gwin, Hickory, NC, Diane Johnson Simon, The Woodlands, TX, Rolf Johnson, Aberdeen, Karen Johnson Fergen, Grand Island, NE.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews: Marian Dilly, Erie, CO, her children Patty Dilly (Paul) Vero, Lafayette, CO, and Dr. Ron Dilly, Houston, TX; Rose Dilly, Sacramento, CA, her children Randy (Carol) Dilly, Sacramento, CA, and Gayle (Ole) Kehlet, Citrus Heights, CA; and Janice Dilly, San Jose, CA, and her children Kristine (David) Schmidt, Chehalis, WA and Richard Dilly, San Jose, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Edward and Amy Dilly; husband, Woodrow; and three brothers Robert Dilly, Russell G. Dilly, and Carroll H. Dilly.

Sister Juliana Doohen, 95, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died March 8, 2005, at Mother Joseph Manor.

The funeral for Sister Juliana will be Friday, March 11th at 10:00 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. Father Ben Benzinger, SJ, will be celebrant and homilist. A Scripture Rosary Service will be Thursday, March 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 SE 6th Avenue, in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Mary Doohen was born August 1, 1909 in Burbank, SD. She attended Burbank High School for two years and then entered Presentation Convent August 25, 1933. She pronounced her vows on August 11, 1936. Sister Juliana served in the dietary and housekeeping ministry from 1933 to 1999. Her quiet and unobtrusive manner endeared her to many people. She loved her family and her Presentation community. Sister Juliana worked in many of our school convents as well as in the food service departments of McKennan Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital and Holy Rosary Hospital in Montana.

Sister Juliana is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters; one sister, Clarie Duerst, Penn Valley, CA; and one brother, Robert Doohen , Sioux Falls, SD. She is preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers.

Nephews will serve as casket bearers.

ROBERTA “BERTIE” SCHAUNAMAN

The funeral service for Roberta “Bertie” Schaunaman, 68, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm Friday, March 4, 2005 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Jerry Stolp officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Schaunaman died Monday, February 28, 2005 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Thursday, March 3 at the funeral home with family present from 5-7 pm and a prayer service at 6 pm with Pastor Richard Williams officiating.

Roberta “Bertie” Cleveland was born on October 1, 1936 to Robert and Florence (VanAernam) Cleveland at Erie, MI. As a young child her family moved to Aberdeen where she grew up and attended school. At Central High School she was in Accapella Choir and was a violinist in orchestra. After school she worked at KSDN radio station.

Bertie married Henry “Hank” Schaunaman on April 23, 1955 at Aberdeen, SD. After marriage, Bertie worked with Hank on their farm. She later worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Bradbury’s Construction for a few years. Bertie also worked as a bookkeeper at the American News and Kurda Mills. For about two years she worked at Central High School. In 1978 she went to work at the Department of Social Services. She made many close friends there and retired only due to poor health in October 2003.

Bertie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo. Bertie and Hank bowled in the leagues. Sitting down to watch a movie with family was a favorite pass time of hers. She also liked the family vacations they went on. But one of her greatest joys came from drives that she and Hank took together in the country.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters: Wanda Schaunaman of Westport, and Sharon Schaunaman and Alan Sayer of Aberdeen; special son-in-law: Tim Selzler of Westport; nine grandchildren: Shawn (Michelle) Schaunaman, Jeremiah Schaunaman, Christopher Schaunaman, Jason Schaunaman, Caryn Cluff, Will (Kim) Bohn, Sara (Jim) Hohn, Robert Brown, and T.J.Selzler; nine great grandchildren: Tori, Amijo, and Shawn, Jr. Schaunaman, Dezirae, Jace, and Will, Jr., and Joshua Bohn, Tiana Jo Kumpf, and Jacob Henry Hohn; and brother Dick (Chris) Cleveland of Lake Andes, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Hank; parents Robert and Florence; two sons: Bob and Ricky Schaunaman; sister: Lois Schaunaman; and two brothers: M. Lee Cleveland and Leslie Cleveland.

Casket bearers will be Shawn Schaunaman, Jeff Schaunaman, Jason Schaunaman, Robert Brown, Tim Selzler and Christopher Schaunaman.

IRENE HERMAN

Funeral services for Irene Herman, 78, Aberdeen, are 11:00 am Thursday, March 3, 2005 at First Baptist Church, Aberdeen with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial at Eureka City Cemetery at 2:30 pm Thursday. Irene Herman went to her eternal home, Saturday, February 26 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation: 10-7 pm Wednesday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE with family present from 5:30 to 7. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service.

Irene Herman was born on June 13, 1926 to Gottfried and Lydia (Maisch) Schnabel thirteen miles east of Eureka, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school along with her eleven brothers and sisters. She married Herbert Herman September 26, 1948 at Eureka. They lived on a farm seventeen miles east of Eureka. They moved to Aberdeen in 1988, where she babysat for various families and cleaned for Dr. Kraushar and the Ethanol Plant. Herbert died on October 19, 1990 at Sioux Falls, SD.

Irene was an active member of three churches during her lifetime. She was a past member of the UCC and First Baptist Church, Eureka. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Aberdeen where she attended Sunday school and Bible study. She loved cooking, gardening and cleaning. Irene loved entertaining people at her home. She also enjoyed sharing her faith with others.

Grateful for having shared her life are three sons, Aaron (Ruth) Herman, Hartford, and their daughters, Traci (Scott) Shepherd and her son Jordan, Lisa Herman, Allison (Aaron) Stryzewski. Donald Herman, Aberdeen. Elmo (Sarah) Herman, Parkston, and their sons, Isaac & Rebecca and Nathaniel, 10 brothers and sisters: Frieda (Emil) Feiock, Lodi, CA, Allen (Lillian) Schnabel, Ft. Collins, CO, Emilia Mehlhaff, Hosmer, Johnnie (Delores) Schnabel, Eureka, Martin (Delores) Schnabel, Ft. Collins, CO, Marvin (Doris) Schnabel, Lodi, CA, Lorraine (Reinie) Guthmiller, Belle Plaine, MN, Eleanor (Elmer) Nies, Roseville, MN, Darlene (Al-Nathan) Nies, Little Canada, MN and Jim (Krista) Schnabel, Eau Claire, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, two infant daughters, Joann & Nancy Herman and brother Milbert Schnabel.
