GERALD E. MARTILLA

The funeral service for Gerald E. Martilla, 69, of Frederick will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 pm in South Savo Cemetery, Frederick.

Gerald died unexpectedly from a heart condition on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1 to 7 pm on Friday with the family greeting friends from 4 to 7 pm. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE.

The family prefers memorial to South Savo Cemetery, Frederick Ambulance or Frederick Alumni.

Gerald Edwin Martilla was born December 18, 1936 to Edwin and Edna (Jumisko) Martilla at rural Frederick, SD. He attended school in Richland Township and graduated from Frederick High School with the class of 1954. He went on to take general classes at South Dakota State College for one year. While at college, he was a member of the R.O.T.C. Gerald was united in marriage to Henrietta (Hanky) Bain on August 26, 1956 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Frederick. Plans were being made to celebrate 50 wonderful years together as husband and wife in August. Gerald worked for South Dakota Wheat Growers Association for three years before moving to the Martilla farmstead near Frederick where he and Hanky farmed together until 2004 when they retired and moved into Frederick.

Gerald was a member of Savo Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and served on the church council. He was currently a Director of First National Bank of Frederick and chairman for the Savo Cemetery Association. For many years, in his youth, he enjoyed being a member of the Sod Buster 4-H Club. Gerald served as Director of the Northern Electric Cooperative, Frederick Oil Coop and Richland Township Board.

Spending time with family and friends, who brought Gerald much joy, allowed him to instill the values of integrity, honesty, and a hard work ethic. He enjoyed being in the outdoors on the farm or hunting.

Forever grateful for having shared his life are his loving wife, Henrietta (Hanky Bain) Martilla, Frederick; two daughters, Cindy (Tom) Heckel, Aberdeen, Cathy (Denny) Rasmussen, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Scott, Kristi, and Michelle Heckel, Aberdeen, Landon Rasmussen, Sioux Falls, Rob Heckel, Sioux Falls, Matthew (Tally) Rasmussen, Mankato, MN and Michael Rasmussen, military service in Iraq; three great grandchildren, Teigen Heckel, Sioux Falls, Dylan and Mykayla Rasmussen, Mankato, MN; one sister, Margene Hill, Barberton, OH along with her children, Brian, Leslie, Howard and Eugene Hill; and his extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

ROBERT “BOB” CARROLL

The funeral service for Robert L. Carroll, 88, Aberdeen, will be 10 am, Monday, March 27, 2006 at Plymouth Congregational Church with Pastor Rick Riedel officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Bob died Tuesday, March 20 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation: 2-7pm Sunday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen with a prayer service at 7pm.

Family prefers memorial to North Plains Hospice, 305 S. State St. Aberdeen.

Robert “Bob” L. Carroll was born on November 18, 1917 to Homer and Alice (Wilson) Carroll at Custer, MT. His family moved to Aberdeen in 1920 and then to St. Louise, MO until June of 1924 when they returned to Aberdeen. Bob attended kindergarten and 1st grade at Adams Elementary School in St. Louise, and continued his schooling in Aberdeen until the end of his 11th grade classes in 1935, at which time he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. and was assigned to Sand Lake Camp near Columbia, SD for two years. He returned to Aberdeen in September of 1937 and finished his high school education at Aberdeen Central in the class of 1938.

After graduating from high school Bob was an employee at Lee’s Service Station for a short time, then as a bus driver for the Aberdeen City Bus Co. and later was employed by the Minnesota Amusement Company, which operated the movie theaters in Aberdeen.

Bob joined the 147th Field Artillery in 1940 and was ordered into active duty with the regiment on November 15, 1940. On November 15th, 1941 he was returned to inactive status in the SD National Guard along with the other married members of that unit. He had returned to Aberdeen on furlough in October, 1941 and was joined in marriage to Beryl B. Benscoter on October 6th, 1941.

On January 17, 1942 he returned to active military service and was assigned duty in the post headquarters at Camp Joseph P. Robinson at Little Rock, AK. He was ordered to overseas duty in November 1942 and was assigned to duty with the Panama Mobil Force and Security Command Headquarters at Ft. Clayton Canal Zone where he continued to serve until his honorable discharge from the military on August 16, 1945.

Bob accepted a temporary Civil Service appointment in the finance office of the Panama Canal Department and took his wife and son, Rob, with him. They lived a year in Balboa, CZ before returning to Aberdeen in November of 1946. Bob became part owner and manager of the Yellow and City Cab lines upon his return to Aberdeen. The business was sold in 1948 and he joined the BF Goodrich Co. as its Aberdeen Farm Serviceman. That business closed and he was employed by S&L Clothing Store until he accepted a Civil Service appointment with the U.S. Post Office in Aberdeen on January 1, 1950, a position he held until January 17, 1981 when he retired.

Bob was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ where he had served as an elected member of many of its committees over the years, including the Board of Deacons, finance, and music Committee and a long range planning committee, an adult study group leader and a long time member of the church choir. Bob was also a member of Aberdeen Elk Lodge #1046 where he held an honorary lifetime membership after 40 years of active membership and service in the lodge where he was a member of Aberdeen Prestigious Elks Chorus for 38 years. He also held a long time membership in the Aberdeen American Legion, the VFW Aberdeen Lodge #38 AF-AM as a Master Mason, the National and

Local Chapel #584 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Aberdeen Area Senior Citizens Center where he was actively involved in volunteer service.

Grateful for having shared Bob’s life are his wife, Beryl, Aberdeen, two sons, Rob Carroll, Aberdeen and Richard (Launda) Carroll, Vancouver, WA, twelve grandchildren: Julie (Steve) Ericksen, Alyson (Jeff) Strappazon, Aaron (Linde) Carroll, Aricka (Casey) Browning, Danielle Carroll, Adam Carroll, Jon Carroll, David Carroll, Ben Carroll, Micah Carroll, Kaylhee Carroll, and Angela Carroll, eight great grandchildren: Aidan Ericksen, Nicolas Strappazon, Ethan Carroll, Annelise Carroll, Kyle Browning, Alexis Browning, Christian Browning, and Hannah Carroll and his extended family Gary (Linda) Cumming, Ron (JoAnn) Haglund, Grant (Jeanette) Olesen, and Darwin Kampa.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Andrew Carroll, brother, Cyril Carroll and sister, Thelma Arndtson.

WINIFRED L. DAVIES

Winifred L. Davies “Aunt Winnie”, 76, of Aberdeen, died Monday, February 27, 2006 at her home after a valiant battle with cancer. Her cremains will be buried in Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen at a later date.

Arrangements by Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen.

Winifred L. Davies, “Aunt Winnie” was born October 23, 1929 in Cook County, IL to David and Catherine (Hyland) Lloyd-Davies. She moved with her family to Groton, SD and in 1936 to Aberdeen. She attended Henry Neill School and later graduated from Central High School in 1947. She then attended Northern in Aberdeen. She worked as a secretary for several construction and computer companies in Rapid City and Aberdeen including K. O. Lee Company from 1964 to 1969 and Minneapolis companies. In 2003 she moved back to Aberdeen.

In 1951 Winifred married Sargent McLaughlin. They later were divorced.

Winifred was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the Minerva Chapter of Eastern Star with a 50-year pin, and SoDak Club.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sisters-in-law, Lila (Karlen) Davies of Rapid City, SD, Pauline (Gerber) Lloyd-Davies of Aberdeen and Audrey (McKean) Smith of Sherman Oak, California and nineteen nieces and nephews.

Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: David, Arthur, Robert and John and three sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Pavlin), Dolores (Gill) and Mary (Hart) and one nephew, Edward Davies.

Winifred was a kind and thoughtful person, greatly loved by her family, especially the nieces and nephews to whom she always sent greetings and gifts, especially at Christmas and birthdays. She was an expert flower gardener, winning prizes at the Minnesota State Fair with her Hibiscus.

ROBERT “BOB” GEORGOFF

The memorial service for Robert Georgoff, 73 of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 am Saturday, March 18, 2006 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Bob died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Georgoff was born on June 14, 1932 at Toledo, OH to Anthony and Mary (Tykodi) Georgoff. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Central High School in Toledo with the class of 1950. He then attended the University of Toledo. On March 26, 1952 he entered the US Army and was honorably discharged on March 25, 1955. Bob married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Cbysiski in Toledo. He worked for Continental Coffee until 1961 when he was transferred to Livonia, MI. Bob owned and operated Western Beef Buffet. In 1985 they moved to Albuquerque, NM where he worked for Sexton Food Company. Barbara died February 26, 1991 in Albuquerque. On August 1, 1993 he married Roberta Evans in Albuquerque. Bob retired in 1994 and in August of 2000 they moved to Aberdeen to be near family.

Bob attended First Baptist Church. He loved golfing and yard work.

Grateful for having shared Bob’s life are his wife, Roberta Georgoff, Aberdeen, three children, Ronald (Denise) Georgoff, Aberdeen, Michael (Shari) Georgoff, Emmitsburg, MD, Robin (Clifford) Matushin, Aberdeen, three step children, Russel (Jennifer) Evans, Rowlett, TX, Randal (Sharon) Evans, Mesa, AZ, Robin (Timothy) O’Sullivan, Alexandra, VA, eight grandchildren, Ryan (Julia), Paul, Nicole, Stephanie, Megan, James, Elycia and Joshua, eight step grandchildren, Aaron, Weston, Madeline, Lloyd, Tyler, Caralyn, Conner and Kathleen, brother, Ted (Sandy) Georgoff, sister, Teresa (Bud) Zsigray both of Toledo.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Barbara, four sisters, Helen Munson, Mary Georgoff, Stella Tomar, Ann Cutcher and one brother, Alex Georgoff.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial to the Christian Worship Hour, P.O. Box 2002, Aberdeen, SD 57402.

ANDREW JACOB KRAEMER

The funeral service for Andrew J. Kraemer, 91, Aberdeen, is 1:00 pm Monday, March 13, 2006 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church; Pastor Roger Noer officiating. Burial at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola, SD at 4:30 pm. Andy died Thursday, March 09, 2006 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital.

Visitation: 2-7:00 pm Sunday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen with a prayer service at 7pm.

Andrew Jacob Kraemer was born on May 16, 1914 to John and Margaretha (Weber) Kraemer at Ashley, ND. He grew up there and attended a rural school in McIntosh County. He was baptized on July 12, 1914 and confirmed on June 24, 1928 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley.

Andrew married Barbara Wahl Haerter at St. James Lutheran Church south east of Ashley on November 28, 1935. She died January 26, 1957.

Andrew then married Lila (Schell) Kranzler at Plymouth Congregational Church on October 18, 1957, at Aberdeen.

Andrew farmed West of Ashley, before moving to the Eureka, SD area in 1942. They then moved to Leola in 1952 and then moved to Aberdeen in 1965. Andrew worked at Northern State College from 1965 to 1982 when he retired. Then he worked at Peavey Lumber and United Building Center until the fall of 1995. Andrew truly enjoyed carpenter work.

Andrew was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, ND, Salem Lutheran Church, rural Leola, and St. James Lutheran Church, Leola. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Andrew was active in the churches, serving as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Deacon, usher, lay minister and served at German reading services. He also served on several church councils and various other boards. Andrew was part of ENCORE, a ministry for senior Lutherans. In Aberdeen, Andrew was active in RSVP and was a volunteer at the Senior Center. He was on the board of Germans from Russia. Andrew had a life long love for music and enjoyed singing. He was one of the founders of Friendship Singers.

Grateful for having shared Andrew’s life are his wife, Lila, Aberdeen, sons, Eugene (Marilyn) Kraemer, Waco, TX and Carrold (Charlotte) Kraemer, Aberdeen, daughter Marion (Loren) Weishaar, Converse, TX, two step-daughters, Sheila Kranzler, Aberdeen and Betty (Steve) Carver, Iowa City, IA, nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, sister Emma Haupt, Ashley, ND and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Kraemer, Lodi, CA.

Andrew was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara, parents, John and Margaretha, two brothers, Max Kraemer and Otto Kraemer, seven sisters, Louise Stroh, Lydia Hoff, Laura Heise, Edwina Kraemer, Johanna Geiszler, Alvina Fischer, and Anna Diede, and one grandson, Lee Andrew Weishaar.

SR. MARY NOEL KUNTZ

Sister Mary Noel Kuntz, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died on Friday, March 3, 2006 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD. She was 85.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Noel will be Monday, March 6, 2006 at

10:30 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake service will be Sunday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Father Joseph Sheehan will be celebrant and give the homily.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 SE 6th Avenue, in charge of arrangements.

Marie Helen Kuntz was born August 25, 1920 in Richardton, ND to Rose (Hockstein) and Jacob John Kuntz. She graduated from Regent Public High School in ND in 1940. She entered Presentation Convent September 8, 1942 and made her first profession of vows on August 10, 1945. She graduated from Presentation School of Nursing in 1947 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA in 1954. In 1969 she was certified as a midwife from the Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery in Hyden, KY. She also studied at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO and John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Sister Mary Noel ministered in our sponsored hospitals, Avera McKennan, Sioux Falls, SD; Avera Queen of Peace, Mitchell, SD; Avera St. Luke’s, Aberdeen, SD; and Holy Rosary Hospital, Miles City, MT. She worked in Bernalillo Co. Medical Center in Albuquerque, NM as staff nurse and midwife from 1969-1972. She spent two years on the Hopi & Navajo Indian Project in Fort Defiance, AZ as midwife and staff nurse and two years in Su Clinica Familiar in Harlingen, TX. Sister worked as Home Health Director at St. Joseph Hospital, Dickinson, ND from 1977-1980 and as a volunteer in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, San Antonio, TX as a visitor to the poor. She retired to Albuquerque, NM but continued to do home care for the elderly from 2001-2004.

Sister Mary Noel returned to Presentation convent, Aberdeen, SD in 2004. Sister loved to paint and draw in her spare time.

Sister is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters; three brothers, Simon, Hardin, MT, Val, Belgrade, MT, Mike, Hardin, MT, and six sisters, Carol Steiner, Mott, ND, Freada Wilson, Miles City, MT, Thelma Klein, Spokane, WA, Rose Dukart, Dickinson, ND, Theodora Herner, Wilton, ND and Agnes Regnaud, Springhill, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Jacob Kuntz, and one sister, Elizabeth Steiner in 1999.

Nephews and members of the Aberdeen Knights of Columbus will serve as casket bearers.

EUGENE MEHLHAFF

Funeral service for Eugene Mehlhaff, 86, Aberdeen will be 2 pm, Friday, March 3, 2006 at First Reformed Church with Pastor David Dawn officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Eugene died Monday, February 27 at the Aberdeen Living Center.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Thursday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE and one hour prior to the service.

Eugene Mehlhaff was born on June 8, 1919 at Hosmer, SD to Edward and Christina (Thurn) Mehlhaff. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. On October 8, 1940 he married Sarah Kirschenmann at Hosmer, SD. They made their home on a farm near Hosmer for seventeen years when they moved to Leola where he worked for the American Legion. In 1969 they moved to Aberdeen where he worked for First Presbyterian Church as a custodian until he retired in 1990.

Eugene was a member of First Reformed Church, Aberdeen. He loved raising roses. Eugene loved his family and had a great sense of humor.

Grateful for having shared Eugene’s life are his wife, Sarah Mehlhaff, Aberdeen, daughter, Charlotte (Carrold) Kraemer, Aberdeen, son, Charles (Margaret) Mehlhaff, Milbank, SD, four grandchildren, Clark (Jayne) Kraemer and Cathy (Robert) Dafoe, Courtney Mehlhaff, Meghan Mehlhaff, five great grandchildren, Allyson Kraemer, Justin Kraemer, Jacob Dafoe, Thomas Dafoe and Samuel Dafoe and his sister-in-law Emilia Mehlhaff.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Christina Mehlhaff, two brothers, Arthur and Norman Mehlhaff.

Honorary casket bearers will be all of Eugene’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be Clark Kraemer, Ralph Kusler, Ryan Heyne, Rob Keil, LeRoy Mehlhaff and John Bender.

The organist will be Becky Mehlhoff and duet by Doug Haak and Karen Kusler. The ushers will be Gordon Larson and Doug Haak.

VIRGINIA MAE DAHLKE

The funeral for Virginia Dahlke, 82, Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 18, 2006 at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE with Pastor Dianne Kiesz officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Buffalo Cemetery, Buffalo, ND. Virginia died Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1-7 pm, Friday and one hour prior to the service.

Virginia Mae Biggers was born on October 5, 1923 to Oltis W. and Christine (McKay) Biggers near Buffalo, ND. She attended the first seven years of school at District 79 near the farm. Prior to the eighth grade she moved into Buffalo with her grandparents, Frank and Eva Biggers. She graduated from Buffalo High School with the class of 1941. She then moved to Fargo to work and attended college. She married Leonard E. Thompson in September of 1942. During the next several years she lived in various places in Minnesota and North Dakota until finally settling near Dent, MN. In May of 1964 she began working at West Central Turkeys in Pelican Rapids where she worked for nineteen years. On October 5, 2000 she moved to Leola, SD to be near family. In October of 2002 she moved to the Aberdeen Living Center.

Virginia enjoyed raising vegetables and flowers, iris being her favorite. She also loved raising chickens, geese and goats which was her favorite hobby.

Grateful for having shared Virginia’s life are her sons, Robert (Joan) Thompson, Claremont, SD, Thomas Thompson, William, AZ, David (Marlys) Thompson, Leola, granddaughters, Debra Thompson, Britton, Stephanie (Roger) Olson, Aurora, CO, three step grandchildren, Rick (Charlene) Daschle, Clarksville, TN, Amy (Todd) Krueger, Oakes, ND, Ryan Daschle, Bismarck, ND, three great grandsons, Reid, Joshua and Luke Olson, five step great grandchildren, Christian and Carson Daschle, Kaelie, Reagan and Tori Krueger, brother, Frank (Laura) Biggers, Buffalo, ND, sister, Donna (AW) Jackson, eight nieces and nephews, seven grand nieces and nephew and several cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, James.

Special music by Willis Kiesz.
