IRENE SWENSON

The service for Irene Swenson, 92, Aberdeen, will be 1:30, Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will be at Scandinavia Lutheran Church Cemetery. Irene died Sunday, December 30 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Swenson was born to Severt & Karine Swenson on January 13, 1915 on her parents farm in rural Gem Township, SD. She went to Bath school through first grade, then went to Hundstad School where she graduated from eighth grade. In the fall of 1929 Irene enrolled in 9th grade at Northern State Teachers College. From 1930-1933 she finished high school at Central High School. The next two years at Northern she received a two year curriculum certificate in 1935. Irene taught from 1935-1942 in Seneca, Roscoe, Goodwin, Milbank, Webster, and spent the last eighteen years of her teaching career at Simmons Elementary. She received her Masters Degree from NSU in 1972. She retired in 1978 after forty-two years in the classroom.

Irene was a lifetime member of Scandinavia Lutheran Church, she was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, AAGS Genealogy Club, and Sons of Norway Chorus, and was an officer of the Sons of Norway. She enjoyed growing Easter Lilies outdoors, making Norwegian specialty foods, walking a mile a day club at Mother Joseph Manor, and volunteering at Simmons Elementary. Irene was also involved in the Dorcas circle and the quilting group at Scandinavia.

She enjoyed the love of learning, the challenge of education, and growing in her faith.

Grateful for having shared Irene’s life are two brothers, Ernest (Hazel) Swenson; LaVerne Swenson; and sister, Gladys Hoefert. Nieces and nephews, Rick (Louise) Hoefert, Kathy (Jim) Bitzer, Kirk (Kristie) Hoefert, Pat Pins Nancy Stange Jeanne Swenson, Stu Swenson, Reed (Kathy) Swenson, and numerous Great and Great-great nieces and nepwhews.

She is preceded in death by parents; brother-in-law, Bob Hoefert; sister-in-law, Della Swenson; niece Barb Pins; nephew; Leland Stange; and two great newphews, Jared Bitzer; Jeffrey Bitzer.

LYNN ISAAC WEST

Service for Lynn West, 75, Aberdeen, is 1:00pm Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 214 7th Ave SW, Aberdeen, Pastor Brian Idt officiating. Burial at Hecla Cemetery, Hecla with Military Honors by Stanley Stearns American Legion Post 289. Lynn died December 29, 2007, at Golden Living Center, Redfield.

Visitation: 1-7pm today at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with family present from 6-7pm.

Lynn Isaac West was born on December 25, 1932, to Theodore and Edna (Wallio) West at Frederick, SD. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. On December 31, 1949, he entered the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged on October 9, 1953.

On August 27, 1954, Lynn married Darlene Hankel at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Wahpeton, ND, where he attended Wahpeton State School of Science. In 1957, they moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he drove truck for Standard Oil. In 1958, they moved to Bloomington, MN, where he continued to drive truck. In 1964, they moved to West Fargo, where he ran a gas station, and in 1965 they moved to Aberdeen where Lynn worked for Servall and later drove semi across country for Melroe Company. He retired in 1995, but then worked for Berbos Farms & Alan Walth Trucking.

Lynn was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the VFW and a past member of the American Legion. Lynn enjoyed traveling during his trucking career and was a member of the Teamster’s Union and Minneapolis Civil Defense Police Reserve. He liked hunting and playing cards. Lynn loved to go dancing. His greatest joy came from being with his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Lynn’s life are his wife, Darlene, Aberdeen, sons, Douglas (Elda) West, and Craig (Sheri) West, both of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Michele West (Cal Cunningham), Aberdeen; sisters, Betty Ann Freudenthal, Hecla, and Nina (Fred) Kerslake, Regina Saskatchewan, Canada; grandchildren: Charissa (Jason) Albert, Michael Schulz, and Joshua West; one great grandson, Riley Albert.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter, Lori Lynn West.

HAROLD WELLS

Services for Harold Wells, 82, of Houghton will be 10:30am Friday, January 4, 2008 at the Groton Christian Missionary Alliance Church, with Pastor Bill Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at 2pm, Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Aberdeen. Harold died Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be 1-7pm Thursday, January 3rd, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St. with a prayer service at 7pm.

Harold Wells was born on June 15, 1925 at Aberdeen, SD to Arthur & Jessie (Snyder) Wells. He attended rural school in Lakeview County. Harold graduated Valedictorian from Barnard High School with the class of 1943 . On October 3, 1947 he married Gwendolyn Edwards at Houghton, SD. They made their home in Frederick/ Houghton area. They moved to Houghton in 1979. On March 24, 2001 Gwendolyn died at Aberdeen. Due to poor health he moved into the Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

He was a member of Groton Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Moose Lodge, James Valley Threshing Association, Andover Two-Cylinder Club, and Frederick Senior Center. Harold’s was known for helping people. Harold’s greatest joy and love was for his wife, Gwendolyn of fifty-four years and his family. He had a deep and everlasting relationship with the Lord. He is now reunited in Heaven with his wife.

GORDON E. TEAL

Services for Gordon E. Teal, 86 of Aberdeen will be 10am Thursday, January 3, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whilock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military Honors by the Sidney L. Smith Post #24 of Aberdeen. Gordon died Saturday, December 29, at Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation will be 1-7pm Wednesday, January 2, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., family will be present from 5-7pm.

Gordon Emmet Teal was born on January 23, 1921 to Fred and Carrie (Young) Teal in Northville, SD. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII as a part of the Military Police in Iceland and England. Gordon married Lorraine S. Stenstrom on February 13, 1946 in Webster, SD together they raised five children. He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until his retirement. His wife died December 10, 1994.

Gordon enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time in the outdoors. He also enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking. Gordon treasured the time he spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He always made sure that everyone who came to visit was as comfortable as possible. Gordon’s work ethic was instilled in all his children as he would tell them “work hard and you will be recognized and rewarded”.

Grateful for having shared Gordon’s life are his three sons, William Teal of Toledo, Ohio; Garry (Karen) Teal of Ventura, California; Patrick (Cindy) Teal of Afton, Minnesota; two daughters Robin (Dan) Moore of Medford, Oregon and Carrie Teal of Aberdeen and eleven grandchildren, Britain Teal & (Emmett Doyle), Lexie Teal, Hunter Teal, Cameron Teal, Zachary Teal, Jeremy (Christine) Teal, Alyssa Teal, Randy Johnson, Bethany Johnson, Bill Moore and Nick Moore, two great-grandchildren Seamus Teal and Adam Teal.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three brothers, Robert, Arthur, and Melvin.

ELENORA HOFFMAN

The service for Elenora Hoffman, 85, Watertown, SD, will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Elenora died Monday, December 24 at the Golden Living Center in Watertown.

Visitation will be from 3-6 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Elenora Rau was born on July 21, 1922, the eldest child of Fred and Emma (Ehresman) Rau at Long Lake, SD. She attended grade school in Walker Township. Elenora married Walter F. Hoffman April 28, 1946 at Long Lake, SD. They farmed east of Leola until 1979, when they sold the farm and moved to Leola. She later moved to Aberdeen where she lived for several years. She then moved to Watertown where she lived until entering the Golden living center two years ago.

Elenora was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen and a past member of St. James Lutheran Church, Leola. She was involved in Legion Auxiliary and Extension club. She enjoyed reading, doing handiwork and gardening.

Grateful for having share her life are her son, Bill (Sheila) Hoffman of Arlington; daughter, Marsha Ringler of Watertown; three grandsons, Jared Hoffman, Seth Hoffman, and Chris Ringler; three granddaughters, Heather Walsh, Amy Muilenburg, and Tanya Ringler; and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene (Bernadine) Rau of Leola and Larry (Jan) Rau of Sioux Falls, two sisters, Esther Hoffman of Aberdeen and Marva Lou (Jim) Geffre of Leola.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hoffman, her parents, Fred and Emma Rau, son-in-law Michael Ringler, one brother Marvin Rau, and one sister Freda Kappes.

JOYCE STAHL

Memorial service for Joyce Stahl, 77, will be 2 pm, Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at North Highland United Methodist Church with Pastor Royal Archer officiating. Inurnment will be at the Bath Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Joyce died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at her home in Bath, SD. Joyce’s wishes were to be cremated.

Joyce Bean was born on March 4, 1930 at the family farm near Bath, SD to Arthur and Verna (Reese) Bean. She attended school two years at Willow Ridge and then continued her education in Bath. She graduated from Bath High School with the class of 1948. She then worked for Artz Studio. On June 19, 1949 she married Earl H. Stahl at Bath, SD. They made their home on the Stahl farm. She worked at the school in Bath for six years as a cook. She was involved in getting the Bookmobile started in Bath and worked for the Cancer Society.

Joyce is a member of the North Highland United Methodist Church, where she was active in the UMW. a past member of Bath United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She loved gardening and flowers. Her greatest joy was her family.

Celebrating her life through memories are her husband, Earl Stahl of Bath, Children, John (Sandra) Stahl, Aberdeen, Carolyn (Jim) Mund, Aberdeen, Laurie (A.M. Mitchell) Houghton, David (Carla) Stahl, Bath, grandchildren, Michael (Mary) Stahl, Ryan (Laura) Stahl, Jason Mund, Kaylee Mund, Corey (Jaimie) Mitchell, Erin (Damian) Bahr, Mathew Stahl, Morgan Stahl, great grandchildren, Samuel, Katherine, Joshua, Jakin, Jude, Grace, Payton, Jackson, London, sister, Beverly Runte; sister-in-law, Mildred (Lyle) Fritz; and brother-in-law, LaVerne Swenson. Special friends Darlene Dell and Doris Allbee; and life-long friend Maxine Holmes.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Verna Bean, sisters, Della Swenson, Carol Stalnaker, Wilma Bean, half-brother, Victor Bean and half-sister, Laura Bean Carr.

LESLIE KETTERING

Funeral service for Leslie Kettering, 90, Aberdeen formerly Brentford is 11 am, Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Brentford United Church of Christ with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at the Mellette Cemetery with military honors by American Legion – Brentford and Mellette. Leslie died on Wednesday, December 26 at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation: 5-7 pm, Friday at First United Methodist Church with a prayer service at 7.

Leslie was born on January 26, 1917 on a farm near Brentford to Lloyd and Edna (Grange) Kettering. He attended school in Brentford and graduated from Brentford High School. He then attended South Dakota State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Agriculture and English. He taught school in Wilmot, SD for one year. On August 30, 1941 he married Dorothy Christensen at Conde, SD. He entered the US Army on September 8, 1941 and was stationed in England and later served in various posts across the Midwest. Leslie was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946. He joined the Army Reserve and retired in 1961 as a Lt. Colonel. They farmed in the Brentford area raising livestock.

Leslie was a member of Brentford United Church of Christ where he served on many boards. He was a lifelong member of the Brentford American Legion. He enjoyed assisting his sons in 4-H and was active as a 4-H leader, as well as serving on the Brentford and Spink County School Board, Spink County Farmers Union Board of Directors and the Production Credit Association Board of Directors. He enjoyed living on the farm and attending his sons and grandchildren’s activities. He enjoyed all sports, reading and working with animals.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy Kettering, Aberdeen, sons, David (Nancy) Kettering, St. Paul, MN, Donald (Pam) Kettering, Yankton, SD, Dennis (Julie) Kettering, Aberdeen, Douglas (Diane) Kettering, Yankton, nine grandchildren, Kipp (Brenda) Kettering, Mobridge, SD, Kim Kettering, Aberdeen, Greg (Terri) Kettering, Fridley, MN, Lance (Candie) Kettering, Des Moines, IA, Jenny (Corey) Doerfler, Roseville, MN, Heather Kettering, Kansas City, MO, Chad Kettering, Tampa, FL, Kara (Charles) Welke, East Grand Forks, MN and Kelly Jo Kettering, Kansas City, MO, eight great grandchildren, Kylee, Ethan, Calvin, Emily, Amber, Jada, Jasmine and William.

CLARENCE SWENSON

The service for Clarence Swenson, 86, Aberdeen, will be 2 pm, Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor Tony Haglund officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Clarence died on Wednesday, December 26 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Friday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with family present from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7pm at the funeral home.

Clarence Duane Swenson was born on August 13, 1921 in Werner, ND to Iver & Karen (Hunstad) Swenson. At the age of three his family moved to Gem Township. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1941. Clarence married Lucille Johnson on June 2, 1946 at the First English Lutheran Church in Groton. He farmed south of Bath from 1938-1984, and there they raised five children. In November 2005 the couple moved into Aberdeen.

Clarence enjoyed woodworking , gardening, singing in the Barbershop chorus, and participating in bowling leagues. He especially took pride in his yard.

He was a life long member of Scandinavia Lutheran Church where he held many leadership positions and taught Sunday School. He was also a member of the Gem Township board, NeSoDak Bible Camp Board, Bethesda Home Board of Directors, Brown County CO-OP Board of Directors, and a charter member of the Dakota Heritage Barbershop Chorus. Clarence was an ASC Seal Inspector, and he assembled machinery at Aberdeen Equipment for a number of years in the winter months.

Grateful for having shared Clarence’s life are his bride of sixty-one years, Lucille Swenson of Aberdeen, two sons, Philip (Joanne) Swenson, Rochester, MN; Howard Swenson, Bath, SD; three daughters, Sharla (Mark) Thompson, Thompson, ND; Rebecca (Dwight) Althoff, Waubay, SD; Crystal Swenson; Aberdeen; five grandchildren, Kristin Swenson, St. Paul, MN; Katherine Swenson, Minneapolis, MN; Susan Thompson, West Fargo, ND; David Thompson, West Fargo, ND; Gregory Althoff, Waubay, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Iver & Karen; two brothers, Harvey and Marlo Swenson; and one sister, Marcelle Kreitel.

SOPHIE C. KEMPF

Funeral service for Sophie C. Kempf, 90, Aberdeen is 11 am, Thursday, December 27, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Burial will be at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola at 2:30pm. Sophie died on Monday, December 24 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with the family present from 5-7pm.

Sophie Caroline Kranzler was born on February 12, 1917 to Johann and Maria (Lepp) Kranzler in Leola, South Dakota. She married Matt Kempf on March 22, 1937 in Britton, SD together they were blessed with three children. Matt died on January 21, 1957.

Sophie continued to operate the farm for awhile after her husband died and then she was employed at Woolworths in Aberdeen for many years. She enjoyed growing and tending to her garden and flowers. Sophie also enjoyed working with crafts and bowling. Sophie’s most cherished moments were spent with her family and grandchildren during Christmas celebrations.

Grateful for having shared Sophie’s life are her three children Ernest (Christine) Kempf of Bath, Harold (Mavis) Kempf of Aberdeen, Irene (Howard) Plummer of Columbia; seven grandchildren Janeen (Donald) Rang of Parker, James (Lisa) Plummer of Tyndall, Julie Plummer of Sioux Falls, Karla (Kevin) Burkman of Yankton, Kerry (Les) Rawden of Aberdeen, Curtis ( Carol) Kempf of Aberdeen, Wade (Melissa Myers) Kempf of Bremerton, WA , two step-grandchildren Chad Linderman of Minneapolis, MN, and Kevin (Brandi McKittrick) Linderman of Aberdeen, eight great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and five brothers and two sisters.

LULU ELIZABETH (CAMPBELL) JANSSEN

Services for Lulu Janssen, 102, Aberdeen are 1:00 pm Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Deb Grismer and Pastor James E. Clarke officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Lulu died on Saturday, December 15, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation is 1-7 pm, Wednesday, December 19, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Lulu Elizabeth Campbell was born on March 21, 1905 in Sioux City, IA to Joseph Casson and Jean Fortune (Calder) Campbell. She was the granddaughter of Judge A.W. Campbell, early resident of Aberdeen Dakota Territory Legislator and South Dakota’s Fifth Circuit Judge.

She attended grade school in Houghton and Frederick, SD. In 1919 she attended high school at Northern Normal receiving her Diploma in Frederick on May 25, 1923. She then attended the University of South Dakota graduating on June 6, 1927. She taught English and coached the girl’s basketball team at Columbia. She also taught English at Simmons Junior High School and Monroe Junior High School in Aberdeen.

She married Herman G. Janssen on June 20, 1930. He attended the University of Minnesota Dental School and she owned the “Studio Book Shop”. They moved to Mankato, MN and lived there until Dr. Janssen was called to service in WW II. The family moved to Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX, settling in Aberdeen after he return from France on November 26, 1945.

Lulu was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a past member of First Presbyterian Church. Lulu was a member of NSDAR and served as Regent of McPherson Chapter. Her patriot ancestor is Zebulon Whipple. She was a member of P.E.O., Chapter B; member of AAUW; “Time Club”; and Alpha Phi Sorority, Psi Chapter, USD. She served on the advisory boards of the Dakota Prairie Museum and the Alexander Mitchell Library. She was appointed to the National Board of Directors of the American Heart Association where she served three years and was honored to receive their Gold Service and Silver Service to Heart Awards. Lulu was on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank, Frederick, SD.

Grateful for having shared Lulu’s life are her son, Robert (Nancy) Janssen, Aberdeen and their family, David (Carla) Janssen and children, MaKayla, Mitchell and Alexis, West Fargo, ND, Mark (Deborah) Janssen and children, Gregory, Victoria, Thomas and Jeffrey, Andover, MN; her daughter, Barbara Fortune (Walter) Knipe, Grand Forks, ND and their family, William Knipe, Steven (Holly) Knipe, Grand Forks, Anne Fortune (Jason) Spaeth and their son Jonah Cadogan Spaeth of London UK and Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, granddaughter and brother.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.
