DALE “BUZ” POTTER

The service for Dale “Buz” Potter, 58, Aberdeen, is 3:00 pm, Monday, December 17, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Dale died Friday, December 14, at his home.

Visitation is from 1-7 pm Sunday, December 16, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with family present from 5-7 pm.

Dale “Buz” LeRoy Potter was born on December 7, 1949 to Dale Clifford and Florence (Connor) Potter at Aberdeen, SD. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. Starting in Monroe Grade School, then attending Simmons Middle School and graduating from Central High School in 1968. Buz started a year at Northern State University, but was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. During his service, Buz was stationed in Germany with the Signal Corps.

Buz married Sherry Bartos on August 25, 1969 at Webster, SD. After Buz’s service in the military, he and Sherry made their home in Aberdeen. He worked for Nash Finch, for awhile and then started working for the Aberdeen School District. Beginning as a Custodian, Buz later became a Foreman and was currently the school districts Operations Director. Buz was with the school district for thirty-three years. He always loved the challenge of his job and the people he worked with.

Music was always important to Buz. He loved the Beatles and other classic rock groups. His grandchildren always said, “My grandpa rocks!” Buz played the Rhythm Guitar, the Organ, and loved to sing. Music was a stress relief for Buz. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Buz liked watching the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Yankees and had played softball. The family enjoyed hours of playing basketball in the dark together. Buz loved his dogs. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and lived out his faith in being a servant. He always said he just wanted his obituary to read, “He lived, he loved, he had a great family.”

Grateful for having shared Buz’s life are his wife, Sherry of Aberdeen; three sons: Doug (Tiki) Potter of Box Elder, SD, and their children, Korrina, Kira and Tanea Potter, Shawn (Tammy) Potter of Aberdeen, and their children, Gage Potter, Shay Potter, and Jordan Swanson, and Brent Potter and his fiancé Kaeleen Coe of Las Vegas, NV; his sister, Linda (Mick) Zerr of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Derin, Brian (Cody), and Jamie Zerr.

Buz was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Florence and his grandparents.

WESLEY ADAM KISSNER

The funeral service for Wesley Arthur Kissner, 94, Redfield, formerly of Aberdeen, is 10:00 am Monday, December 17, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park with military honors by Sydney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Wesley died Tuesday, December 11, at the Golden Living Center, Redfield.

Visitation will be from 2-4 pm Sunday, December 16 at the funeral home.

Wesley Arthur Kissner was born on October 7, 1913 to Edward and Anna (Feriede) Kissner at Zell, SD. He grew up and attended school there. Wesley graduated from high school at Tulare, SD. Wesley proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army.

Wesley married Jeri Wagner in 1944 and together they had one son. Wesley married Edith Helgelien on June 9, 1979 at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Scatterwood Lake until the fall of 1997 when they moved to Aberdeen. Edith died on October 16, 2003.

Wesley was member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW in Zell.

Grateful for having shared Wesley’s life are his son, Wilbert “Bill” (Carole Ann) Kissner of Port Isabel, TX, two step-sons; Duane (Annette) Helgelien of Colorado, and Jerry (Loretta) Helgelien of Fargo, ND, two step-daughters, Earleen (Abdalla) Hanafy, of St. Cloud, MN, and Donna Borchard, of Aberdeen, his step-daughter-in-law, Elta Helgelien, of Watertown, SD, his brother, Herman Kissner, of Redfield, four grandchildren, eighteen step-grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, twenty-two step-great grandchildren, and two step-great-great grandchildren.

Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna, his first wife, Jeri and second wife, Edith, one step-son, Daryl Helgelien, one step-grandson, Brent Helgelien, three sisters, and two brothers.

HERBERT WOLFF

Herbert H. Wolff, 88, Aberdeen, formerly of Mobridge, a private family service was held on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with a burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sydney L. Smith Post #24. Herbert died on Saturday, December 1, 2007 in Aberdeen.

Herbert Wolff was born on June 24, 1919 in Java, SD to Fred & Magdalena (Goering) Wolff. He proudly served his country in the US Army in the medical battalion. Herbert married Alma Baer on September 23, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Bowdle, SD. Herbert owned the Phillips 66 Gas & Oil Station in Mobridge, SD for many years.

He liked pheasant hunting, fishing, and camping. Herbert enjoyed family gatherings and playing cards with friends. He greatly appreciated his workers.

Grateful for having shared Herbert’s life are his wife of sixty-two years, Alma Wolff, Aberdeen; one son, Terry (Linda) Wolff, Aberdeen; one brother, Alvin (Hazel) Wolff, Gold Canyon, AZ; two sisters, Lorraine Amerine, Sacramento, CA; Lillion Kost, Herreid, SD; two grandchildren, Traci (Scott) Musland; Toni (Dustin) Lotton; three great-grandchildren; Mckaden & Keyahna Musland; Daultin Lotton.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Alton; and one sister, Elsie Bolen.

MARTHA HETTICH

The service for Martha Hettich, 100, Aberdeen, will be 10:00 am, Friday, December 14, 2007 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Hyle Anderson and Pastor Brian Idt officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Martha died Monday, December 10 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Martha Kiesz was born on October 24, 1907 to Gottlieb & Marie (Bieber) Kiesz at Hosmer, SD. She grew up in a German community and did not learn English until she attended country school near Hosmer.

When Martha was nineteen, she married Fred Hettich on May 2, 1926 in Hosmer. Together they had three sons. Martha and Fred moved to Aberdeen in the fifties which gave Martha more free time to do the things she loved such as gardening, cooking, and reading. She especially loved reading the Bible.

Martha also enjoyed polka music, crocheting, scrapbooking, and spending time with her family. She loved children and babysat for the neighbors. To her family, Martha was always known as “little grandma”.

Grateful for having shared Martha’s life are her son, Ervin (Myrene) Hettich, Aberdeen; six grandchildren, Debbie Hurst; Ronald (Emily) Hettich; Tim (Belinda) Hettich; Larry Hettich; Sandy (Ralph) Wakely; and Steven (Trixie) Hettich; eleven great-grandchildren, Michelle (Chris) Clark; Cindy (Jason) Murray; Charlotte (Eric) Jensen; Christina Lahammer; John (Samantha) Hettich; Melissa Hettich; Shaun Hettich; Aaron Hettich; Scott Hettich; Kurtis Hettich; and Brooklyn Hettich; and eight great-great-grandchildren, Courtney Clark; Danielle Clark; Cole Jensen; Logan Jensen; Ashlie Lahammer; Dylan Lahammer; Jason Ohlde; and Taryn Hettich.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons; one great-great-grandson, Mathew Walter-Brown; one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Hettich; three sisters; and two brothers.

ANNA E. INSLEY

The funeral service for Anna “Anne” E. Insley, 94, of Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm Friday, December 14, 2007 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Anne died Sunday, December 9 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation is 10am Friday until the service at 1pm the funeral home.

Anne E. Doores was born on September 30, 1913 at Harlowton, MT to Crawford and Grace (Wood) Doores. As a small child the family moved to SD and in 1923 they moved to Aberdeen, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She worked for Kreges Dollar Store, Webb Shoe Co., Benson Optical, and Dr. Richard Letherer, where she worked for twenty-five years.

On March 24, 1962, Anne married Oliver W. Insley at Pipestone, MN. They made their home in Aberdeen. Mr. Insley died on July 7, 1992 at Aberdeen. Anne continued to make Aberdeen her home.

Anne was a member of First Baptist Church of Aberdeen. Her children had just recently taught her how to use the computer.

Grateful for having shared Anne’s life are her two sons, Lyle (Traudi) Eagleson, Portland, OR; Raymond (Barbara) Eagleson, Lincoln City, OR; one daughter, Carol (James) Brittan, Trautdale, OR; eleven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Crawford and Grace; her husband, Oliver; two daughters, Donna Mae Outlaw; Janice (Jim) Barr; one brother, Jim Doores; and three sisters, Rose Ochs; Lela Walters; and Helen McCow.

AGNES SJERVEN

The service for Agnes Sjerven, 93, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Monday, February 11, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Agnes died Wednesday, February 6, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

A family prayer service will be held at 4pm Sunday, February 10 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

VIOREL G STOIA

Aberdeen, SD – Viorel “Vi” G. Stoia, beloved family man, business partner and community activist passed away on Monday, January 28, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Viorel, son of John and Seana Stoia (Biliboca), was born on February 13, 1924 in Aberdeen, SD. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1942, serving as Senior Class President. Vi served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946 in the North and South Pacific as a Chief Petty Officer. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration.

He was united in marriage to Donna Marie Maurseth in 1949. They made their home in Aberdeen, SD where they raised five children.

Vi began his financial services career as a Special Agent for Northwestern Mutual in 1950. He served as District Agent from 1960-1989 and as a Senior Financial Representative from 1989 until his death. He earned the Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1957 and the Chartered Financial Consultant designation in 1984, both from the American College. He served as president of the Aberdeen District Life Underwriters; president of South Dakota Life Underwriters; and co-founder and president of SD Society of Chartered Life Underwriters. He was named South Dakota Life Underwriter of the Year and received numerous National Quality awards. He was a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table.

For nearly 60 years, Vi participated in many civic associations. In many instances, he served as founder or president which resulted in Vi receiving numerous awards including: Aberdeen Jaycees Boss of the Year in 1973; Distinguished Alumni Award – NSU in 1976; the George Award in 1979 and 1994; Jefferson Award in 1980; Distinguished Service Award –Brown County Fair in 1987; mention in many Who’s Who Publications; SD Community Volunteer of the Year; Excellence in Economic Development in 2000; and SD Medal of Distinguished Excellence in 2008.

Community associations included the Aberdeen Jaycees; Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce; Aberdeen Convention & Visitors Bureau; Aberdeen Downtown Association and Business Improvement District; Aberdeen Centennial Foundation; Aberdeen Development Corporation’ Community Action Resource Team; Aberdeen YMCA; Alexander Mitchell Library; Prairiewood Village and Moccasin Creek Country Club. Most notable, Vi was instrumental in rallying support and/or securing financing for projects including: the Municipal Swimming Pool; Aberdeen Convention Center; NSU Barnett Center; New Aberdeen Central High School; Northeast Regional Health and Fitness Center; North 281 Bypass; Highway 12 Expressway; Moccasin Creek Revitalization; and general water development resources.

Throughout his life, Vi also served on the board of various businesses, health organizations, educational affiliations, and political organizations including: PACE; Tel-Serv; Aberdeen Glass Company; Small Business Advisory Council; Aberdeen Real Estate Partnership; Student Loan Finance Corporation; Education Assistance Corporation; Aberdeen Fairway Supermarket; Aberdeen Athletic Officials Associations; NCAA Official North Central Conference; SD School For the Blind and Visually Impaired; Northern State University Foundation; SD Council of Economic Education; Presentation College; SD Foundation of Private Colleges; Citizens for Public Higher Education; Brown County Mental Health Association; Northeastern Mental Health Center; SD Mental Health Association; SD Mental Health and Mental Retardation Board; Avera St. Luke’s Board of Trustees, Citizens Advisory Council, Finance Committee, and Real Estate Committee; SD Health Systems Agency; SD Crippled Children’s Hospital; SPURS; USD School of Medicine; and Presentation Health Systems. He was a special friend of the Presentation Sisters for over fifty years. Vi also participated in numerous local and state-wide campaigns; Brown County Republican Committee; Delegate at Republication National Convention; Presidential Electoral College; Republican Central Committee; and Republican National Finance Committee.

Vi will be remembered as a true pioneer and visionary for the community, region and state. He was tireless in his pursuit of knowledge and shared that wisdom with others by clipping articles, facts, and statistics that would move projects, ideas, and initiatives forward. This obituary is a clipping worth keeping as it defines what an individual who is committed to serving his family, friends, business, community, and country can accomplish in a lifetime.

Vi’s personal interests included running, hunting and sporting events. A believer in the benefits of physical fitness, he supported the YMCA and was a runner for over 50 years. He officiated regional basketball and football games for over 25 years, and was an avid follower of Northern State College sporting events. He enjoyed pheasant hunting with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Vi’s life are his wife Donna; children, Marsha (Tom) Luzier of Aberdeen, Nancy Stoia of Eden Prairie, MN, Greg (Rita Sandell) Stoia, Naples, FL, and James (Florence) Stoia of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Jonathon Fortner, Morgan Luzier, Jonah (Christina) Luzier, and their daughter, Sophie, Jamie Stoia, Megan Stoia, Matthew Stoia, and Juliette Stoia; brother, Dennis (Peggy) Stoia, Somonauk, IL; sister, Lenora Sweet, Milwaukee, WI; Mary Jane Hotop, Sandwich, IL; sister-in-laws, Virginia Stoia, Tulsa, OK and Kitty Stoia, Bartlesville, OK. Preceded in death by his son, Thomas of Minnetonka, MN passed away on January 29, 2008, his parents, brothers, John Stoia; George Stoia; sister, Olivia Javoroski.

Visitation will be from 9am-5pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with a prayer service held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 7PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 1 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church followed by a private burial at Riverside Memorial Park.

Vi Stoia Memorial Fund will be established.

THOMAS STOIA

Thomas (Tom) Stoia, 48, of Minnetonka, MN died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Tom was born May 8, 1959, to Viorel G. and Donna (Maurseth) Stoia in Aberdeen, SD. He attended Aberdeen public schools and graduated from Aberdeen Central in 1977. After high school, he moved to Minneapolis, MN and had a 23 year career at Seagate Technology. He then attended Minnesota School of Business, graduating in 2002. He later founded TopNickel Design, a company providing web site development services

Tom was a lifelong sports fan and loved to travel. During his childhood days, he was a fixture at Aberdeen Pheasants baseball or Northern State College football and basketball games. Road trips to regional college football games that his father officiated, and later to Metropolitan Stadium to see the Twins or the Vikings, were his introduction to travel. His favorite destination was New York City, where he frequently visited with his father. Whether it was Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium, Madison Square Garden or Central Park, Tom relished exploring new territory. The Breeders’ Cup with his brothers and father was one such trip. Spring Training in Ft. Myers was an occasion to preview the Twins and formulate his season prediction.

Tom loved being with family and friends. Always a patient listener with a caring disposition, he had a great sense of humor, a wonderful wit and loved to laugh. His kindness will be missed. Over the years, his nieces and nephews became the highlight of his life, and he thoroughly enjoyed their school events and simply hanging out. His kindness and selflessness not only made him a great son, brother and uncle, but also a loyal friend. He was very active in his church - The Gathering Place. The friendships and support he received there were particularly important to him.

His toughest journey started eighteen months ago. As he engaged into a battle with lung cancer, Tom’s determination was an inspiration to all. His sister Nancy was a great source of strength and she provided daily care throughout his illness. He was appreciative of all of the help he received along the way.

Grateful for having shared Tom’s life is his mother, Donna Stoia of Aberdeen; sisters, Marsha Luzier (Dr. Tom) of Aberdeen, Nancy Stoia of Eden Prairie, MN; brothers, Greg Stoia of Naples, FL and Jim Stoia (Florence) of Atlanta, GA; nieces and nephews, Jamie Stoia, Megan Stoia and John Fortner of Eden Prairie, MN and Matthew and Juliette Stoia of Atlanta, GA.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Viorel “Vi” G. Stoia on January 28, 2008 and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Visitation will be from 9am-5pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with a prayer service held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 7PM. A The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 1 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church followed by a private burial at Riverside Memorial Park.

Tom Stoia memorial fund will be established.

ORVILLE SCHULER

The service for Orville C. Schuler, 91, Aberdeen, will be 11:00 am, Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Plymouth Congregational Church with Rev. Richard Fylling officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Orville died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Orville Schuler was born to Edward & Grace (Crippen) Schuler on May 1, 1916 in Aberdeen. He attended Aberdeen Central High School. After graduating from high school Orville began working at Granger Dry Cleaning Plant where he worked for several years. He enlisted in the US Army on October 21, 1942 and stationed in England. He was discharged in December of 1946. After being discharged, Orville went to work for Lust Chevrolet as a car salesman for thirty-five years.

On January 8, 1946 Orville married Harriet Halverson in Aberdeen, SD.

Orville was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for fifty plus years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Grateful for having shared Orville’s life are his wife, Harriet Schuler, Aberdeen; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and special friend, Darlene Wahl.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters.

CLARENCE GOEHRING

The service for Clarence Goehring, 73, will be 1:00pm Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, with Rev. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Clarence died Friday, February 1, 2008 at Bemidji, MN.
