DORIS MARIE KINNEY RIEHL HUGHES

The service for Doris M. Hughes, 89, Sioux Falls, is 10:30am, Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Doris died Friday, January 18 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation is 1-7pm Friday with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Doris Marie Kinney was born August 9, 1918, in Yankton, SD, to Albert and Pauline (Hall) Kinney. She attended school and graduated from Yankton High School in 1936. She then attended Minneapolis Business College and worked at Glen Lake Sanatorium and later at Equitable Life of Iowa in Minneapolis.

She was united in marriage to Edward Riehl in April 1940 in Yankton. They lived in Minneapolis, MN; Miami, FL; Falls Church, VA; and Birmingham, AL. To this marriage was born two daughters, Karen (D.W.) Riehl Ringsby and Jean (R. Van) Riehl Johnson. Mr. Riehl died in January 1948 in Birmingham.

Doris returned to SD with her two young daughters. They resided in Aberdeen because of family in the area. She was employed by Sacony Vacuum of Aberdeen and later by the Public Health Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs.

On September 19, 1953, Lloyd G. Hughes and Doris M. Riehl were married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, where they made their home. They enjoyed dancing and belonged to dancing clubs, Esquire and Promenade. They also enjoyed golfing, bridge, and traveling. They were active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Doris taught Sunday School and was active in circle and Altar Guild. She was involved with the Library and Memorial Committee. Lloyd and Doris traveled to Norway and Wales and 49 states. Later Doris took part in a marathon with her granddaughter, Jill Johnson Rallis and went to Alaska, #50. Lloyd and Doris enjoyed going to Pickerel Lake. Lloyd died in February 2001.

In the spring of 2007, Doris moved to Sioux Falls, and lived with her daughter Jean and husband, R. Van to be close to her SD family. She enjoyed going to Pickerel Lake with them, being outside watching birds, going for walks and the many family gatherings.

Doris belonged to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, since 1948, BLCW, past President of P.E.O. Chapter AX of which she was honored as a 50 year member, Time Club, Sons of Norway, Aberdeen Country Club, and several bridge clubs. She was active in church volunteer work and at Bethesda Home, Aberdeen. She loved traveling to see her two daughters and their families. She enjoyed walking, reading, gardening, and writing letters.

Grateful for having shared Doris’ life are her daughters, Karen (D.W.) Riehl Ringsby, Denver; Jean (R.Van) Riehl Johnson, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren and their families, Eric (Rachelle) Ringsby; Gary (Bettina) Ringsby; and children, Justin Ringsby, Tatiana Ringsby; Alexander (Joanna) Ringsby; and children, Callista Ringsby, Alexandra Ringsby, and James Ringsby; Jill (Michael) Johnson Rallis; and son Alexander Rallis, and Eric (Anna) Johnson, and sister Marion Kinney, Santa Rosa, CA; and brother, Arthur Kinney, Stockton, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three sisters, and one brother.

The family prefers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. NE, Aberdeen, SD 57401 or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 903 W. 33rd St, Sioux Falls, SD 57105.

MERRILL JAMES HEMEN

The service for Merrill James Hemen, 87, Aberdeen, is 10:30am, January 23, 2008 at the Plymouth Congregational Church, Aberdeen, Pastor Don Peck officiating. Burial is at 2:00 pm at Lakeview Cemetery, Columbia, SD. Merrill died on January 19, at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Visitation: 1-7pm, with family present from 5-7, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with a prayer service at 7pm.

Memorials to Special Olympics, SPURS, or Barnard UCC.

CHARLES KIRKPATRICK

Services for Charles Kirkpatrick, 73, Aberdeen are 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Charles died on Thursday, January 17, at Manor Care Health Services of Aberdeen.

Visitation is 1-7 pm, with family present from 6-7pm Monday, January 21, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Charles Kirkpatrick was born on October 8, 1934 in Aberdeen, SD to Dr. Stewart and Kathryn (Burnette) Kirkpatrick. Chuck grew up and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1952. Chuck was a member of the US Army reserves, while attended Ohio State University where he graduated with his Bachelor’s of Science in 1956 and his Masters of Social Work in 1958. In 1962 Charles married Brenda Luck in Barberton, OH, and to this union two sons were born C.T. and Jim Kirkpatrick.

Chuck was a social worker in psychiatry, a program director for the Boys Village in Smithville, OH, an assistant professor in the department of social work at the University of North Dakota. In 1968 Chuck became the assistant project director for the Social Welfare in Dunwoody, GA. In 1970 he became the chief social worker at Northeastern Mental Health Center, and soon became clinical director until his retirement in 1976. While at North Eastern Medical Center he created several programs for disadvantaged youth and drug rehabilitation programs.

He married Linda Ernst on August 7, 1976 in Aberdeen, SD, and to this union they had one daughter Kelli Kirkpatrick, and raised three sons C.T., Jim, and Scott.

Chuck was an avid supporter of youth hockey and coached both hockey and soccer, Chuck was also a member of the Eagle Scouts and was Troop Scout Master, he was a member of the Scottish Rites, Masons, Yelduz Shrine, and was a member of the board of directors of Restaurant Growth Incorporated. He dedicated his life to helping children, and had several foster children. Chuck loved watching Nascar, collecting model cars and planes, and watching his grandchildren’s sports.

Grateful for having shared Chuck’s life are his wife, Linda Kirkpatrick, Aberdeen; three sons C.T. Kirkpatrick, Austin, TX, Jim Kirkpatrick, Austin, TX, and Scott Linquist, Rapid City, SD; his daughter Kelli Kirkpatrick, Aberdeen; four grandchildren Kaylie Kirkpatrick, Jade Kirkpatrick, Brandon Linquist, and Kiara Linquist.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

LILLIAN VOEGELE

Services for Lillian Voegele, 98, of La Crosse, Kansas formally of Leola, will be 2pm Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bowdle with Pastor Ross Prevo officiating. Visitation will be from 11am to 2pm at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery near Leola. Lillian died Friday, January 11, 2008, at the Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse, Kansas.

Lillian Binder was born on May 3, 1909 in McPherson County, South Dakota to Daniel and Magdalena (Zumbaum) Binder. She was raised and educated in McPherson County. She was raised as a Seventh-Day Adventist and was a life long member.

She married John Voegele on May 4, 1927 at Ipswich, SD. They built a home on his parents farm and farmed until 1965 when he retired. John died on January 20, 1997. She continued to make Leola her home until she moved to La Crosse, KS in 2000 near her daughter Viola Heiser and then she entered the Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse, KS in 2003.

Lillian lived a full life and had many interests. When she found a spare moment she would be quilting or making rugs. Playing the piano was her way to relax. Even in the nursing home she accompanied the group singing at the weekly devotional meetings. She enjoyed providing for her family by harvesting fresh vegetables from her garden. Then on long winter nights she would be knitting, crocheting, or working on crafts.

Grateful for having shared Lillian’s life are her two children; Myron and Shirley Voegele of Burleson, Texas and Viola and Loren Heiser of Rush Center, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Warren; Nancy; Bruce; Amber; Brian; Ron (Alecia) Heiser; Janet O’Rear; Rick (Kim) Heiser; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Art Binder; Christian Binder; one sister Beata Jundt.

WILLIAM E. WASEM

The service for William E. Wasem, 81, Aberdeen will be 1:30 pm, Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be provided by the Sydney L. Smith Post #24. William died Saturday, January 12th at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a brief illness.

Visitation will be from 1-8 pm, Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:30 pm and family present from 5-8 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

William Earl Wasem was born on November 10, 1926 to Maurice and Hilma (Gaebe) Wasem at Halliday, ND. In 1950 he earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of North Dakota. While in the Navy, he took flying lessons and earned his private pilots license. On November 11, 1950 William married Lorraine Keller at Bismarck, ND. He worked for the Federal government for over thirty years and was the Finance Manager for the Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service when he retired.

William was an avid gardener and fisherman. He also loved hunting, bowling and sports. He was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council as treasurer and on the Trust Committee. William was also a life time member and secretary of the Elks Club, and a life time member of the American Legion, treasurer of the Hockey Association for many years, and secretary and treasurer of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). He also served on the military honor guard for many years.

Grateful for having shared William’s life are his wife, Lorraine, Aberdeen; two sons, Dean (Tammy) Wasem, Aberdeen; Dr. Carey (Tracey) Wasem, Zionsville, IN; two daughters, Susan (Gib) Bissell, Kalispell, MT; Cathy Wasem, Honolulu, HI; one brother, Charles (Agnes) Wasem, Sun City West, AZ; three sisters, LuAnn (Lloyd) Selle, Halliday, ND; Dorothy Hess, Cheyenne, WY; Hilma Joyce (Richard) Mann, Lacey, WA; two sisters-in-law, Theresa Wasem, Dickinson, ND; Lenora Wasem, Dickenson, ND; nine grandchildren, Erin Bissell, Andrew Bissell, Katie Bissell (Eric) Bowers, Jeremy (Stacie) Wasem, Alisha Wasem (Steve) Schlosser, Rachel Wasem, Michael Wasem, William McQuiston; one step-granddaughter, Morning Star McQuiston Williams; two great-grandchildren, Jagr Wasem; Zoya Schlosser; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice Wasem, Jr. and Leslie Wasem; one brother-in-law, James Hess; and one son-in-law, David McQuiston.

OLGA BENDER

The service for Olga Bender, 91, Aberdeen will be 10:30am, Monday, January 14, 2008 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial will be at 2:00pm at Green Mound Cemetery in Leola. Olga died Thursday, January 10 at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 2-7pm, Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Olga Heupel was born on October 1, 1916 near Leola, SD to John and Frieda (Kranzler) Heupel. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in McPherson County. Olga married Fred Bender on October 27, 1935 at Long Lake, SD. They made their home on a farm four miles south of Long Lake, SD. They retired in 1966 and moved to Leola where Olga worked with the school lunch program. Fred died on January 31, 1989. Olga moved to Aberdeen in1993 for her health reasons. She lived with her son, Marvin, until 2000, when she moved to Homestead Apartments. In 2005 Olga moved into ManorCare.

Olga was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, doing word searches, and gardening. She also loved to bake and cook.

Grateful for having shared Olga’s life are her son, Marvin Bender, Stratford, SD; Daughter-In-Law, Dianna Furman, four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Frieda; husband, Fred; and one son, Melvin Bender.

SEBASTIAN ENGELHART

The service for Sebastian Engelhart, 90, Aberdeen will be 11:00am, Monday, March 31, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Sebastian died Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at ManorCare in Aberdeen.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

ERNA WERRE

Erna Were, Aberdeen, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Kenneth Kelly, 65, Aberdeen, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at his home in Aberdeen.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, has been entrusted with arrangements.

DOROTHY SCHLEY

Services for Dorothy E. Schley, 82, Aberdeen will be 10am, Thursday, March 13, 2008 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Dorothy died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation is from 1-7pm Wednesday, March 12, 2008 with the family present from 5 to 7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Dorothy Eleanor Schley was born on February 3, 1926 at Conde, SD to John & Ina (Klapperich) Bertsch. This is where she grew up and attended school.

On July 15, 1980 Dorothy married Laverne Schley at Stratford, SD.

Dorothy was a member of PEO. She also volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital. Dorothy enjoyed crossword puzzles, golf, playing cards with friends and family, spelling, and walking. She especially enjoyed traveling and spent the winters in Arizona.

Grateful for having shared Dorothy’s life are her husband, Laverne Schley, Aberdeen; son, Robert Radke, Charlotte, NC; daughter, Karen Allan, New London, NC; five grandchildren, Alison Radke, Austin, TX; Tina Radke, Austin, TX; Eva Radke (Steven Pitalo), New York City, NY; Christopher (Jennifer) Allan, New London, NC; Jennifer (Ethan) Shore, Concord, NC; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jim (Margaret) Bertsch, Salem, OR; Gerald (Mavis) Bertsch, Rosemount, MN; Thomas (Edith) Bertsch, Conde, SD; three sisters, Genevieve Hoops, Ferney, SD; Lucille (Lyle) VonWald, Groton, SD; and Alice (James) Rentz, Aberdeen.

She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Ronald; sister, Veronica; three brothers, Leo, Floyd, and Lyle.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.

PHYLLIS J. JARK

The funeral service for Phyllis Jane Jark, 80, of Sioux Falls, SD, will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Groton, SD, with Rev. Wesley Hafner and Rev. Craig Grams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Phyllis passed away on March 7, 2008 at Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls, where she was a resident for two and a half years.

Visitation is from 1-7pm, with the family present from 5-7, and a prayer service at 7pm on Monday, March 10, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Phyllis Jane Erdmann was born on December 18, 1927 to George and Elfrieda (Hoops) Erdmann, on a farm three miles southwest of Groton during a roaring blizzard, the doctor could not make it until the next day. After a few years at this farm, they bought a farm northeast of Groton. Phyllis attended rural country school for eight years. She entered high school at Pierpont, SD, and transferred to Groton High School. Phyllis graduated in 1945.

Phyllis attended Northern State Teachers College and earned a teaching certificate. Her first school was in Riverside Township, which was three miles from the family farm. She taught 3rd and 4th grade at Andover Public School. As a young teacher, Phyllis loved to travel with summer classes from Northern to such diverse areas as Cuba and Quebec. Phyllis then started teaching 4th grade at Groton Public School in the early 1950’s and continued until 1962. She also taught at Stratford and Ferney, SD. She was a dedicated and caring teacher.

On June, 3, 1962, Phyllis married Lloyd B. Jark at Zion Lutheran Church in Andover, SD. They made their home on the Jark farm outside of Stratford for 42 years. They moved to Sioux Falls in 2005.

Phyllis was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stratford. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was a member of the Brown County Extension Club and was also a leader of the Rondell Robins 4-H Club. Butter horns, flaming desserts, and Christmas cookies were just a few of Phyllis’s specialties that made dinner at the Jark home a special event.

Phyllis had a flair for fashion, flowers, and home décor that delighted her friends and family. Her compassion and humor will always be remembered. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Lloyd, Sioux Falls, three daughters: Becky (Donald Hill) Erdmann, Reno, NV, Peggy (Lynn) Weismantel, Sioux Falls, and Heidi (Steve Kenat) Jark, Cincinnati, OH, one son, David (Kim) Jark, Rogue River, OR, five grandchildren, and her brother in-law, Duane Jark, Stratford. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Erdmann.

Casket bearers will be Al Ryckman, Arlen (Buzz) McNeil, Val Jark, Bernie Jark, Larry Jark, and Dustin McNeil. Honorary casket bearers will be her grandchildren, Matthew Weismantel, Betsy (Steve) Van Genderen, Cavin Hill, Catarina Kenat, and Chris Witherspoon.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Stratford Community Theater,or the Alzheimer’s Association, South Dakota Office, 1000 N. West Ave., #250, Sioux Falls, SD 57104.
