KAREN BIEBER

The memorial service for Karen Bieber, 59, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Karen died Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, after fighting breast cancer for nearly three years.

Karen Kay Schrader was born on June 4, 1948 to John & Elizabeth (Klundt) Schrader at Gregory, SD. She attended Gregory High School where she graduated with the Class of 1966. After graduating high school, she went on to attend Black Hills State College where she majored in education and graduated in 1969. She taught school for three years in Bison, SD.

On December 21, 1972 Karen married Jack Bieber at Aberdeen, SD. Together they raised two children Summer & Jason. For the next 20 years she was an aid in Special Education for the Aberdeen school system.

Karen was a member of the PTA at Aberdeen Central High School. In her free time she enjoyed reading, especially mysteries and People Magazine. Karen also enjoyed shopping for Christmas gifts and shoes. Above all, she loved spending time with her family.

Grateful for having shared Karen’s life are her husband, Jack, Aberdeen; son, Jason (Tracy) Bieber, Kansas City, MO; daughter, Summer Bieber, Fargo, ND; two brothers, Bill Schrader, Chicago, IL; Melvin (Phyllis) Schrader, Lusk, WY; four sisters, Darlene Grayson, Canada; LaVonne Blood, Phoenix, AZ; Donna Rezac, Ainsworth, NE; Lois (LeRoy) Erickson, Ramona, SD; and two grandpets.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Norma, and one brother, Marvin “Bub”.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Fwy., Ste. 250, Dallas, TX 75244 (for breast cancer research).

FLORENCE SWARTWOUT

The service for Florence Swartwout, 97, Thornton, CO, will be 1:00 pm, Monday, February 18, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Florence died Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at Elms Haven Care Center in Thornton.

Visitation will be from 3-5pm, Sunday, February 17, 2008 at the funeral home.

Florence was born September 15, 1910 in rural Brown County, SD to William and Flora Rohwedder. Most of her young life was spent in McPherson County where she attended grade school. Her family later moved South of Westport where she finished grade school and high school in Westport, SD.

She married Lloyd Swartwout on Dec. 24, 1931 in the home of Rev. Grant Tooker. The first few years of their life were spent in Westport, SD where Lloyd taught school, before moving to Aberdeen. She was active in her church and enjoyed working with the youth and young adults in the church.

She worked for Feinsteins Ready Wear for many years and after retiring she enjoyed her hobbies of sewing, baking, and crafts. She joined the Aberdeen Senior Center where was very active and especially enjoyed the craft department. Over the years she belonged to many different clubs in the Aberdeen area, the Retired Senior Volunteers Program, a garden club, and extension club, and a homemakers club to name a few.

She is survived by one son, Kermit (Karen) Swartwout, one grandson, Sterling (Kim) Swartwout, one granddaughter, Lisanne (Donald) Overholt and five great grandchildren, Michele Overholt, Amanda Overholt, Natalie Swartwout, Jacob Swartwout, and Lauren Swartwout all of Denver, CO. Two sister-in-laws, Ruth Rohwedder, and Mary Walworth, brother-in-law, Warren Walworth, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd Swartwout, one sister, Dorothy Rohwedder and two brothers, William and LeRoy Rohwedder.

MYRNA BLAKE

Following a valiant & courageous 3-year battle with cancer, the Lord finally granted her peace & called her home on Monday, February 11th at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

The service for Myrna Blake, 70, will be at 10:30am, Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Plymouth Congregational Church with Pastor Richard Fylling officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Friday, February 15, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street.

Myrna McMillan was born on September 4, 1937 in Conde, SD as an only child to Lloyd “Pete” & Mabel (Morgan) McMillan. The family had operated “The Little Inn” café in Conde but spent several years in Jamestown, ND & Madison, SD before returning to Aberdeen in 1945 where they owned & operated “The Last Chance”. Myrna graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1955 & then attended Northern State Teacher’s College.

On September 8, 1956 she married her high school sweetheart, Merritt Blake in Aberdeen, SD. They made their home within the city of Aberdeen before moving to the country to take over the Blake family farm in 1967. Together, they raised three children (2 sons & 1 daughter) & provided a loving, welcoming home to all who knew them.

Myrna was an amazing, accomplished woman. Her wide-ranged talents included: cooking, gardening, painting, drawing, canning, baking, landscaping, crocheting, sewing, music, raising animals or, basically, anything she put her mind to. Above all else, her greatest love was caring for her children & her family. Myrna also enjoyed participating in a bowling league for several years, other local clubs/organizations, & was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church.

Grateful for having shared Myrna’s life are her husband, Merritt Blake, Aberdeen; two sons, Dave (Marla) Blake, Aberdeen; Steve Blake, Rapid City; daughter, Penny (Doug) Hanson, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Logan Blake & McKayla Hanson; her sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Colleen (Blake) & Selmer Anderson, Cresbard; & many aunts, uncles, & cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents

DUANE “SHIZ” CZMOWSKI

The memorial service for Duane R. Czmowski, 62, Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor James E. Clarke officiating. Burial will be at Webster Cemetery at a later date. Duane died Friday, April 11, 2008 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 5-8pm, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Duane Robert was born on August 5, 1945 at Webster to Frank & Violet (Barnett) Czmowski. He attended and graduated from Webster High School in 1967. Duane enlisted in the Army National Guard on October 1, 1962 until September 30, 1967. He was married in 1970 to Norma Olson, also of Webster. They raised their family in Aberdeen. At the time of his death he was employeed at Econo Foods.

Duane was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and a member of the 40/8. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and volunteering his time for the American Legion and 40/8. Duane especially loved spending time with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Duane’s life are his children, Todd (Jamie) Czmowski of Alpena, SD; Shelia (Jeff) Bruse of Aberdeen; Lori (Jeremy) Haak of Huron; grandchildren; Gracie Czmowski; Emily & Dylan Clark; Jacob Johnson; Trever & Lyndsey Bruse; Jenna, Destiney, Halley & Hayden Haak; three sisters, Gwen Stanley, Shirley (Charlie) Paul, and Carol Barko.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Violet Czmowski; brothers, David & Gene Czmowski.

FRITZ ROSEBROCK

Services for Fritz Rosebrock, 71. Aberdeen is 2:00 pm, Friday, April 25, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1732 S. Main St., Aberdeen with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Fritz died Saturday, April 12 at his home after a brief battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Thursday, April 24 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

MILDRED TOLSON

The funeral service for Mildred Tolson, 94, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Monday, April 14, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home. Burial will be Thursday, April 17, at Missoula, MT. Mildred died Thursday, April 10 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Mildred Jacobson was born at Leola, SD on May 20, 1913 to Nels & Anna (Carlson) Jacobson. This is the area where she attended school and graduated from Leola High School in 1931. She married Harry Tolson on December 3, 1936 at Miles City, MT. This is where they made their first home. In 1955 they moved to Missoula, MT. where she was employed with the University of Montana as a library clerk until she retired in 1977. Her husband died in 1969. Shemoved to Aberdeen in 1988, sharing a house with her widowed sister, Anna. Together they moved into Mother Joseph Manor.

Mildred was a very devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Mildred’s life are her sister, Anna; two nephews, James Jacobson; William Jacobson, CA; and friend, Arvin Zinter.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Esther; three brothers, Eric; Robert; & Walter.

RUTH MCCORMICK

The service for Ruth McCormick, 89, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Sheila Apland-Ottenbacher officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Ruth died Thursday, April 10, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Tuesday, with family present from 5-7pm at the funeral home.

Ruth Shipley was born on August 6, 1918 at Goshen, AR to Ellery & Lola (Dennis) Shipley. At the age of two her family moved to Fullerton, CA. This is the area where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Fullerton High School. In 1942 she met Burt McCormick while working in a Malt Shop. On November 3, 1942 she married Burt at Yuma, AZ. While Burt was over seas she help to build planes for the war. She was a rivetter. After the war they moved to a farm near Columbia, SD. Burt died on November 14, 1965 and she moved into Columbia. In 1969 she moved to Aberdeen where she worked for Social Services until her retirement. In 1973 she moved to Bath, SD.

Ruth enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, and canning. She was an excellent cook. Ruth loved people, especially her grandchildren and family.

Grateful for having shared Ruth’s life are her son, Leo McCormick, Bath; daughter, Mickie (Walter) Guthmiller, Minneapolis; grandsons, Daryl (Kari) Guthmiller; Logan Guthmiller; great-grandchildren, Sydney & Samuel Guthmiller.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and three sisters.

ARNOLD J. GUTORMSON

Services for Arnold J. Gutormson, 95, Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Skudesnes Lutheran Church, rural Pierpont, SD with Pastor Janet Johnson officiating. Burial at the Skudesnes Cemetery. Arnold died Monday, April 6, 2008 at ManorCare Health Services.

Visitation will be from 1-5 pm, Friday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Arnold Gutormson was born on December 2, 1912 at Hillhead near Veblen, SD to John and Christina (Johnson) Gutormson. As a small child the family moved to a farm near Roslyn, SD. Arnold worked in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) camps in the thirties. In 1937 he moved to Alaska where he worked for the US Army & Navy until 1947. He moved to Aberdeen in the 1980’s. Arnold was active in the Senior Citizens Center, where he won many billiard tournies both locally and statewide. For the last ten years he lived at the ManorCare Health Services.

Arnold was an avid reader of English History.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Edith Tyerman of Mitchell, SD, Brother-in-law, Floyd Johnson of Aberdeen and several nephews and nieces.

Arnold is preceded in death by his parents, John and Christina Gutormson, brothers, Lawrence, Harold, Robert and Richard, sisters, Clarice, Delores Johnson, and Juella Opitz.

In lieu of flowers family prefers memorials to ManorCare Health Services.

HELEN VON WALD

The service for Helen Von Wald, 88, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Wesley Hafner officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Helen died Saturday, April 5, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Closed casket visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Helen Sylvia Moe was born on January 24, 1920 to Hans & Marit (Hovrud) Moe in Bath, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at Scandinavia Lutheran Church at Gem Township. She attended rural grade school near her home and attended Stratford High School. She stayed at home to help her mother with the housework and after her mother’s death in 1947 she helped take care of her bedridden sister, Mable and she died on January 31, 1954.

On October 12, 1955 she married Alvin Von Wald at Bath, SD. They made their home on a farm west of Stratford until1996 when they moved to Groton. Alvin died September 21, 1992 and in 1993 she moved to Aberdeen, where she resided until her death.

Helen was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Stratford, where she taught Sunday School. She enjoyed traveling. Helen really loved her nieces and nephews.

Grateful for having shared Helen’s life are her sisters, Cora Woods, Milaca, MN; Dorothy (Percy) Grote, Aberdeen; sister-in-law, Bernice Moe, Spring Green, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin; brothers, Sigurd; Carl; & Melvin Moe; sisters, Annie Pine; & Mable Moe.

BEVERLY AXTELL

The service for Beverly Axtell, 80, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Jon Damaska. Beverly died Friday, April 4 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Beverly Nelson was born on February 23, 1928 at Sisseton, SD to Herbert and Gertrude (Smith) Nelson. This is the area she grew up and graduated in 1946 from Sisseton High School. She moved to Watertown where she attended beauty school. Shortly after graduating from beauty school, she met and married Roger Hanson, in 1947, at Webster, where they made there home and Beverly worked at Mary’s Beauty Salon. In 1949, Roger and Beverly moved to Seattle. Together they had three children.

In 1971, she married George Axtell at Bellingham Washington where they made their home and Beverly then worked in real estate. George died in 1975, and shortly thereafter Beverly moved to Gillette, WY and later to Rapid City followed by a move to Aberdeen in 1994.

Beverly loved to travel; Hawaii and Branson were her favorites. She was an avid reader with a great sense of humor. She loved Storybook Land with her grandchildren, flowers, gardening, and baking, especially for family and friends. She will be missed by her children, her many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Beverly’s life are her children, Gary (Dennie) Hanson, Hot Springs, SD; Deb O’Donnell (Tim Conraads), Aberdeen; Linda (Harry) Moffett, Oregon; grandchildren, Carey (Todd) Agena; Jenny (Shannon) Merriman; Joe Hanson; Brendan Dean; Mary Vance; Mike (Tami) Saylor; Joey O’Donnell; Amy (Patrick) McCarty; Heather (Andrew) Cantrall; great-grandchildren, Tyler Vance; Ashley Vance; Kelsey Saylor; Trevor Saylor; Jennifer Agena; Zachary Agena; Alex McCarty; Leah McCarty; Nicholas McCarty; Shawn McCarty; brothers, Denny (Marilyn) Nelson; Dick (Mary) Nelson, MN; and Paul Nelson, NV.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers family prefers memorials may be sent to Wells Fargo Bank.

BEVERLY EDWARDS

Beverly Edwards, 80, Houghton, SD, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Kindred Hospital, Denver, CO.

Arrangements are pending with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.
