Albert 'Red' Schnabel

TRIPP -- Albert "Red" Schnabel, 88, Tripp, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 2003) at St. Benedict's Hospital, Parkston.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Frieden's Reformed UCC, Tripp, with the Rev. Greg Way officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers are Melvin Konrad, Larry Zeeb, Carl Zeeb. Larry Stoltz, Larry Eisenbraun and Chuck Haberer.

Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home, Tyndall, is in charge of arrangements.

Albert "Red" Schnabel was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Hutchinson County near Tripp to August and Lydia (Meyer) Schnabel. During the '30s, Red worked in the Belle Fourche Conservation Camp in the Black Hills. He married Otilia Elizabeth Denke Nov. 25, 1937, at Delmont. They farmed northeast of Tripp until moving into Tripp in 1977. He worked for Brosz Construction until retiring in 1987.

He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, gardening and working in his yard.

He is survived by his wife, Otilia, Tripp; three sons: Dale (Barbara) Schnabel, Rapid City; Derald (Sharon) Schnabel, Tripp; and Orville (Jane) Schnabel, Moorhead, Minn.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Schnabel, Santa Marie, Calif.; and two sisters: Viola Freier, Tripp; and Edna Wenzel, Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild, his parents and a sister.

Earl Rames

Earl Rames, age 80, of Menno passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Menno, SD with Rev. David Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery.

Visitations will be from 1-9 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2004, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, SD, with the family present at 7 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Victor Rames, Darrel Edelman, Keith Knodel, Terry Gillette, Al Janzen and Mark Hasz.

Earl was born on September 29, 1923, in Hutchinson County to William and Anna (Steffen) Rames. He grew up on a farm near Olivet and attended grade school and high school in Olivet graduating in 1941. He attended South Dakota State University for a year and a half, and then returned to the area to farm with his dad. On October 26, 1945, he married Mariette Haar in Menno at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They continued to farm until their retirement in 1988.

Earl was very active in his church and community serving on many boards including the Lower James Water Project District, Farmers Grain and Stock Company, Hutchinson County Extension, Hutchinson County Fair Board, Landmann-Jungman Hospital, Menno-Olivet Clinic and Secretary and Treasurer of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He also served many years as secretary for AAL Branch 2816.

Earl was a friend to many and always willing to extend a helping hand. He had a passion for helping people, whether it was a friend in need or to aid a stranger. His wit always made people laugh and so many enjoyed his many humorous stories.

He thoroughly enjoyed working with friends on various projects at church or at the Power Show site.

Up until his failing health, he enjoyed golfing with his buddies or spending time in his shop. He took great pride in the restoration and driving of his Œ54 Chevy.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Mariette; a son, Mark and his wife Peggy; a daughter, Trudi Schaeffer and her husband Mark; a grandson, Brent and his wife Ann; two granddaughters: Blair Rames and Breanne Willmeth and her fiancé, Reid Johnson; three step grandsons, Brad, Daniel, and Luke Schaeffer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Herbert Nyman

WAUSA, Neb -- Herbert Nyman, 93, Wausa, Neb., died Friday (Jan. 30, 2004) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services are pending with the Brockhaus-Scott Funeral Home, Wausa.

LaVerne Albers

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- LaVerne Albers, 83, Bloomfield, Neb., died Thursday (Jan. 29, 2004) at the Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services are pending with the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton.

Vernon 'Bud' Slowey

Vernon "Bud" Slowey, age 84 of Yankton passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Richard Baumberger officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791.

Pallbearers will be Elmer Hasker, Jerry Frick, Marty Raab, David Frick, Dale White and Brian Frick.

Visitations will be 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

"Bud" was born March 27, 1919, at Irene, SD to Thomas P. and Anna C. (Huber) Slowey. He attended school at Utica, SD and graduated high school in Yankton in 1937, where he was a member of the YHS track team as a long distance runner.

He enlisted in the South Dakota National Guard 147th field artillery BN in September of 1940 and entered active duty in November of 1940. He served in the New Guinea, East Indies and Luzan Campaigns, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and other citations. He received his honorable discharge in June of 1945.

Upon his return to civilian life, he worked for many years for several construction companies, closing out his working career at Boller Printing Co. in Yankton, SD.

He will always be remembered for his avid love of hunting and fishing and was a long time member of Ducks Unlimited and he will be sadly missed by his many "buddies."

He was a life-long member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he performed many, many charitable acts for his relatives, friends and neighbors.

His memory is cherished by four sisters: Elinor Perry of Parker, CO; Maxine (Ed) Lanctot of Portland, OR; Lois Hasker of DeLand, FL; and Rita (Jim) Seeley of Storm Lake, IA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Richard; and two brothers-in-law: Don Perry and Les Hasker.

Raymond Kaiser

Raymond Louis Kaiser, age 82 of Yankton passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton.

A private family service will be held. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date. At his request, there will be no visitation.

Raymond Louis was born on April 4, 1921, to John H. and Johanna (Uhe) Kaiser in Yankton, SD. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and Yankton High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Army August 17, 1942, and served in the Signal Corp. and later in the Air Force. He was united in marriage to Florence D. Moses on Jan. 25, 1943, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. He became ill with rheumatic fever on May 1944 and after recovering, he completed his enlistment in the Military Police at Camp Crowder, Missouri. He was honorably discharged at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin Feb. 21, 1946. Upon returning to Yankton, he was employed at Fox Jewelry, later buying an interest in the store. He was employed for 27 years by Continental Baking Company as a route salesman and supervisor. After retirement, the couple lived at Cottonwood, AZ and Rapid City, SD before returning to Yankton. He loved his country and all of nature and he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a Teamster and a 45-year member of the Elks Lodge No. 994.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Florence of Yankton, SD; his sons: Larry Ray and his wife, Kathy and their child Miss Lara Rose, of Springfield, NE; and Bradley G. and his wife, Rachel and their children John, Thomas, Marie and Katie of Nashville, TN; a brother, Lawrence H. Kaiser of Arvada, CO; and a sister, Sister M. Verena, OSB, Sacred Heart Monastery of Yankton, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Gertrude Fischer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to: Sacred Heart School Foundation, 509 Capitol Street, Yankton, SD 57078.

Laura Halling

Laura Dorothy Halling, 88, Yankton, died Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) at Avera Scared Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Wessington, with the Rev. Michael Bagnall officiating. Burial is in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation is Wednesday afternoon and evening at Welter Funeral Home. Wessington, or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service Wednesday night at the funeral home.

Laura was born Feb. 2, 1915, to Robert and Elsie (Meyer) Mehling near West Point, Neb. In 1927, her family moved to Arco, Minn., where she attended school and graduated from Arco High School. On Oct. 21, 1933, she married Lee Halling. They farmed near Arco. Laura moved to Wessington in 1957. During her lifetime she was employed at Huron in retail at Montgomery Wards, Woolworth's and the V&G Shop, operated the school lunch program at Sand Creek School, managed the Shed Café at Wessington, and was employed by Raven Industries, Huron. In the fall of 2002, she moved to Canyon Ridge Apartments, Yankton, to be near her daughter and family.

She was a life-long member of the Lutheran church and women's service groups, and a Sunday school teacher. She was also a founding member of the Arco Chapter of the Federated Women's Club, and a 45-year member of the Sand Creek Club. She was always known for her upbeat attitude and willingness to offer a helping hand wherever needed. She was most happy when she was surrounded by her family.

Survivors include her children, Laurel (Alvin) Sommer, Yankton, and James (Debra) Halling, Ft. Pierre; three grandchildren; one brother: Richard Mehling, Wessington; one sister, Esther Hauswedell, Arco, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson.

Florence Walloch

Florence C. Walloch, age 81, of Yankton, and formerly of Lesterville, SD, passed away Friday, February 6, 2004, at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitations will be 4-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a rosary at 7 p.m., Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. and a service by the Women of the Moose at 7:45 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Florence C. was born to Peter J. and Petra (Knudsen) Stark on the family farm near Utica, in Yankton County. She attended Utica School through the eighth grade. She loved the piano and took lessons from a lady in Utica for a quart of cream for each lesson. She became an accomplished piano player. She graduated from Yankton High School in 1939. She married Edward J. Walloch on November 14, 1940, at St. John's Catholic Church in Lesterville, SD. They lived on a farm south of Lesterville until they retired and moved to Yankton in 1974. They also established a Czech band known as the Three Notes Plus. Edward passed away on May 28, 1995. Florence entered the Yankton Care Center on December 8, 1993, due to dementia and has resided there until her death on February 6, 2004.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Women of the Moose and the Czech Heritage Preservation.

She is survived by two sisters: Hazel Hauck and Ella Fuks, both of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys Plaatje

AVON -- Gladys A. Plaatje, 87, Avon, died Tuesday (Feb. 17, 2004) at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Avon, with burial in Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon.

Visitation begins one hour prior to the service at the church.

Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Avon, is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys was born Nov. 25, 1916, on a farm near Avon to Joseph and Emma (Rehurek) Obr. She attended a rural school west of Avon for eight years and graduated from Avon High School in 1934. Soon after graduation, she was employed as a clerk and bookkeeper at Gelfand's Grocery Store, Avon, for seven years. She married Luverne L. Plaatje Jan. 30, 1938. They made their home in Avon throughout their married life, except for a period of 33 months during World War II when her husband was drafted into active service. Gladys then moved to Tyndall and lived with her two sisters while she worked at the Tyndall Variety Store. After her husband was discharged from the service, they again made their home in Avon, where she worked at the local Gamble store for four years, one year for Marshall Wells, which was owned by Pat Crosby, and from that job transferred to the Crosby Gas Company in 1953. Her husband died Oct. 23, 1970.

She became a member of First Presbyterian Church in April 1942. She was a member of the church choir for a number of years and taught Sunday School for approximately 12 years.

Survivors include her sister, Mabel Lubbers, Wakonda; a brother, Joe Obr, West Des Moines, Iowa; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters.

Robert Hirsch

Robert W. Hirsch, 78, Yankton, died Tuesday (Feb. 24, 2004) at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Dave Gunderson officiating. Military rites are by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791, Yankton. A military burial at sea of the cremated remains will be conducted by the U.S. Navy at a later date.

The family will be present at 1 p.m. Monday to greet the public at the church.

Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.
