MURIEL BRICK

The service for Muriel Brick, 88, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Thursday, April 10, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Muriel died Thursday, April 3 at ManorCare.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Muriel Fern Gerdes was born August 11, 1919, to Fred W. and Fern (Malnory) Gerdes, She lived on a farm with her parents, near Breckenridge, MN. When she was five years old her parents moved to Aberdeen, SD, where she grew up. When she was seven years old her mother died. Later her father married a wonderful woman, Olive Bittner, who raised her, her sister, and her brother.

She attended elementary school and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1938. She then attended hair styling school and worked at that until she married Harold Brick on November 25, 1941. They made their home on a farm southwest of Aberdeen until 1991, when they moved to Aberdeen.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UMW, circle five, Town AMD, Country Bells Homemakers Club, and the Women of the Moose.

Grateful for having shared Muriel’s life are her husband, Harold Brick, Aberdeen; daughters, Janice (David) Bunt; JaneAnn (Bruce) McNeil, Sioux Falls; brothers, Fred (Doris) Gerdes, Dewitt, IA; Richard (Barbara) Borchart, Fair Oaks, CA; sister, Jacqueline Gerdes, Northbrook, IL; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Carol) Bunt; Gary (Kristen) Bunt; Douglas Bunt (Patty Owens); Bradley Bunt (Betsy King); Patrick McNeil; Darrin McNeil; great-grandchildren, Jamie & Gracie Bunt; Devon Violanta; Kaden Bunt; Gabriel Bunt; Brittni McNeil; Raymond & Zachary McNeil.

She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Ronald Brick; and brother, C.F. (Bud) Gerdes.

WALTER CARLSON

Services for Walter Carlson, 92, Aberdeen, are 11:00am, Monday, April 7, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Paul Svingen officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Walter died Wednesday, April 2 at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation is 2-7pm, Sunday, April 6, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, family present from 5-7pm.

Walter Carlson was born in Aberdeen on March 15, 1916 to Esther and Gottfried Carlson. He was a life-long resident of Aberdeen and the son of one of the early Swedish families in the area.

Walter married his childhood sweetheart, Alice Nelson, on September 3, 1939. Walter’s life was dedicated to his family, and he was known by friends for his sincerity and steadfastness. He served his community in a variety of ways, including a term as county commissioner. Walter also opened a go-kart track south of town in the 1960’s. He traveled throughout a four state area with his sons, participating in go-kart racing. His long standing with Bethlehem Lutheran Church gave him great joy. One of the retirement projects he was most proud of was making baptismal boxes for the children of the church. Walter served as a Boy Scout leader for many years. He supported Boy Scouting in many ways throughout his life.

Walter worked for Aberdeen American News to help support his family while he was in school. After graduating from Central High School, Walter went to work for Dakota Sash & Door where he learned the woodworking business. His experience led to owning his own business, Carlson’s Woodworking, where he enjoyed making quality custom cabinets and furniture. Hard work was an important part of his life, and the quality of his products was important to him and always a source of great pride. After retirement, Walter built a home in the country with a hobby shop on the property so he could continue making furniture and other treasured items for his children and grandchildren.

Walter was an expert marksman, taking great satisfaction in loading his own ammunition and shooting with friends. He hunted throughout South Dakota, particularly enjoying hunting pheasants in the Aberdeen area and big game in the Black Hills. He spent twenty summers traveling the western states with his brother, visiting his children and sightseeing new places each year. Walter’s memory endured to the last. He enjoyed reminiscing and was never short of recollections and stories to delight his family and friends. His sense of humor was never far from the surface, always gentle, in good taste, and good natured.

Walter would want to thank all the wonderful people who assisted him in his later years. The family is grateful for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Robert Suurmeyer, his nurse, Sue Boniek, and the staffs at Primrose Cottages and Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Grateful for having shared Walter’s life are his seven children, Linda (Chuck) Frost, Rexburg, ID; Jane McElroy, Anacortes, WA; Richard Carlson, Socorro, NM; Gary (Gaylene) Carlson, Orem, UT; Esther (Dave) Garber, Bozeman, MT; Donna (Doug) Baron, San Diego, CA, Frank (Eva) Carlson, Carlsbad, CA; nineteen grandchildren; and thirty-two great-grandchildren. He was loved dearly and we will all miss him deeply.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice; parents, Esther & Gottfried Carlson; brother, Oka Carlson; brother-in-law, Robert Nelson; and two grandchildren.

CLYDE HIMMERICH

The service for Clyde Himmerich, 51, Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Monday, April 7, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Clyde died Saturday, March 29, at his home in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Clyde Dean Himmerich was born on May 10, 1956 in Aberdeen to Arthur & Lydia (Oster) Himmerich. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. After graduating from high school, Clyde enlisted in the Navy for two years. He then attended a year and a half of school at Presentation College.

Clyde loved sports especially baseball of which he was very knowledgeable. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces & nephews.

Grateful for having shared Clyde’s life are his mother, Lydia, Aberdeen; brother, Allen (Nancy) Himmerich, Goodyear, AZ; sisters, Mavis Goldade, Sioux Falls; Sharon (Ronald) Conn, Duvall, WA; Kathy Kienow, Aberdeen; Lois (Allen) Hettich, Aberdeen; Dorothy (Ernie) Johnson, Aloha, OR; Sheila LaTosh, Westminster, CO; Denise (Randy) Roush, Idaho Falls, ID; many nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father; sisters, Linda Austin, Audrey Huber; nephews, Chad Kienow; and Ryan Himmerich.

ROSS HANNA

The funeral service for Ross Hanna, 38, of Columbia, will be 2:00pm, Friday, April 4, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Columbia. Ross died Sunday, March 30, near Columbia.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Ross Joseph Hanna was born on June 18, 1969 at Huron, SD to James and Valerie Hanna. When he was a young child, they moved to Aberdeen where he attended MayOverby, Holgate, and Aberdeen Central High School. He played ice hockey in high school and graduated in 1987. After graduating, Ross worked with a custom combining crew, the Aberdeen American News, Ralph’s Heating & Cooling, Biegler Construction, James Valley Pork, Allen’s Electric, T & W Construction, and was presently self-employed.

Ross married Nina DeHoet on September 17, 1993 at Columbia. In 1999, they moved to Columbia where Ross attended St. John’s Lutheran Church. Ross proudly served as a volunteer rural firefighter. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his girls. The family also liked to camp. Ross was known for his grilling, even during the winter. He was a motorcross racing fan and liked go-cart racing. He loved NASCAR and the family was able to attend a race at Kansas City. He was a very hard worker who loved to help others. He was known to his loved ones as Uncle Rossy.

Grateful for having shared Ross’ life are his wife, Nina, Columbia; daughters, Sydney & Sadie; father, Jim Hanna; brother, Lee (Penni) Hanna and their son, Logan; sisters, Suzette (Troy) McQuillen, Aberdeen; Sarah Jane Hanna, Aberdeen; grandmother Ortense Hanna; mother-in-law, Arlyce DeHoet; sister-in-laws, Pam (Brad) Hanson; Vicki (Jamie) Rossow; brother-in-law, Tyson (Lindsey) DeHoet; nieces & nephews, Justin Hanson; Sam & Jeremy Weber; Parker & Taryn Rossow; Dacotah & Brodyn (Godson) DeHoet; and dog, Gabby.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Valerie; Granddad, Joseph Moran; Nanny, Phyllis Moran; and Grandpa, Cyril Hanna.

GWENDOLYN MEEKER

The service for Gwendolyn Meeker, 88, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Bicentenial Apartments with Pastor Joe Moslander officiating. Gwendolyn died Sunday, March 30, at ManorCare Health Services.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Gwendolyn Lucille Vandarwarka was born in Canby, MN on June 30, 1919 to Miles & Gertrude (Delhman) Vandarwarka. She lived in several small towns in S.D. When she was about six years old her folks moved from Turton to a farm near Gary, SD where she attended school through the eighth grade. Later they moved to Harold, SD where she worked in Hodeks Café. There she met and married Melvin Meeker at Pierre, SD on September 21, 1942. They farmed near Highmore for seventeen years, then moved to Agar where they had Mel’s Café. Later they moved to Cortland, N.Y. where she worked for Smith Corona retiring from there in 1981. After retiring, they spent their winters in Yuma, AZ until Melvin passed away in 1987. Gwendolyn then moved to Aberdeen and Whitewood. Recently she moved back to Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Gwendolyn’s life are daughters, Darla (Bud) Rousseau, Aberdeen; ReNee Dey (Marvin Dreesen), Aberdeen; sons, Bob (Dianna), Black Hawk, SD; Dennis (Linda), Houston, TX; grandchildren, Tony (Robin) Rousseau; Charles (Kelly) Rousseau; Teri (Richard) Galbraith; Dale Meeker; Jamie (Heather) Sturdevant; Thomas (Kalie) Dey; great-grandchildren, Ryan; Dalton; Cassandra; Darel; Darla; Camryn; Kyanne; Diamond; Jayde; Emerald; Gage; Shay; Blade; Damien; Darion; and sister, Gloris (Richard) Zoller, Pierre, SD.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant brother, Milton Dale; half-brothers, Earl Joy; half-sister, Gladys Gray.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

FRIEDA BENDER

Funeral service for Frieda Bender, 78, Aberdeen, is 1:00 pm, Friday, April 4, 2008 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1429 North Dakota St. with Pastor Roger Noer officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Frieda died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation: 1-5 pm, Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen with a prayer service at 7 pm, at the church.

Frieda Dockter was born April 1, 1929 to John and Rosina (Nehlich) Dockter on a farm between Kenel and Wakpala, SD and baptized in May at the rural St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. She attended the Dockter School through eighth grade. Her high school was interrupted by WWII because since three of her brothers were serving in the armed forces. Frieda’s parents kept her at home to help on the large farm, so she enrolled in correspondence courses.

On October 17, 1946, she was united in marriage to George Merton Bender at rural St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, McLaughlin, SD. Merton served in the Army Air Corps until his honorable discharge in 1947.

On August 31, 1952, she married Frank Bosch, Wakpala, SD at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin.

During this time, Frieda had pursued her high school diploma via correspondence at the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. Frieda received her State High School diploma June 5, 1953 with her son Randy standing beside her. Her son, Francis, was born June 26, 1953. She and her sons moved to Aberdeen in November 1954 in pursuit of her goal to become a teacher.

Frieda enrolled in classes at Northern State Teacher’s College and received her two-year degree in later Childhood Education on May 25, 1956. Now qualified as a teacher, she taught fourth grade at Henry Neil School for five years and then transferred to Lincoln and Simmons Elementary where she taught Remedial Reading. She became full time at Simmons Elementary as a remedial reading teacher in 1968. On August 17, 1961, she received her Bachelor of Science in Education at Northern State Teacher’s College. On August 13, 1965, she received her Master of Science in Education degree at Northern. She continued to earn postgraduate hours in the ensuing years.

She married Merton Bender May 27, 1984 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, SD, and they made their home in Aberdeen.

Frieda continued to teach for several more years before retiring in 1991. She retired from teaching at Simmons Elementary in the fields of both Remedial Reading and Learning Disabilities. Her dream of becoming a teacher became a reality that lasted thirty-five years. She gave much credit to Rose Bender, her beloved mother-in-law, for the encouragement she gave her in her academic endeavors.

Frieda was a life-long member of the Lutheran faith. She was a life member of the National Education Assn., of the South Dakota Education Association; Aberdeen Education Assn. of which she served as president for one year. She was also a member of Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Martha Circle at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Frieda taught Adult Basic Education for twenty years. She was also a member of the Northern Alumni Association and the Aberdeen Retired Teachers Association. The Republican Presidential Task Force recognized both her and Merton in 2006.

Frieda was very proud of her two sons, Randy and Francis, and often spoke of them as the greatest gift God could ever have given her. She maintained that they always gave her great inspiration and a real reason for living. She was also very proud of her grandchildren’s academic achievements and careers.

Grateful for having shared Frieda’s life are her two sons, Randy (Audrey) Bender, Lafayette, CO; Francis Bosch, Aberdeen; step-sons David (Brenda), Boulder, CO; Gerald (Sandy), Jerusalem, Israel; and Keith Bender, Yankton, SD; brother Walter (Irene) Dockter, Haysville, KS; sister-in-law Leola Dockter, Rapid City; two granddaughters, April Bender, Denver, CO; Rachel Quesenberry, Warrenton, MO; nine grandsons, Ryan Bender, Boulder, CO; Frank Bosch Jr., Bismarck; Eric & Grant Bender, Boulder, CO; Joel, Karl, Benjamin, Zachary Bender, Jerusalem, Israel; Aaron Albers, Berkeley, CA; four great-granddaughters, Warrenton, MO; nine nieces and nine nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merton; one sister, Anna Dietrich; four brothers, Edwin, Gottlieb, Otto and Adolph Dockter.

Verna Delores Rueb

Verna Delores Rueb, 80, Aberdeen, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Her service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is from 4-7pm, Friday, with family present at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Verna Rueb was born to Mary (Schick) & Eugene Ernst near Roscoe on December 10, 1927, where she was raised, attended grade school and graduated from high school. She completed her studies at Northern State College where she received a teaching certificate and then began her many years of giving and caring by teaching in a rural school near Roscoe.

On June 19, 1949, she married Wesley Rueb at Roscoe and then moved to Leola where she worked in the Department of Welfare Office, at the county seat in Leola, from 1951 to 1958. Together, Wesley and Verna then owned and operated Rueb’s Jack & Jill grocery store from 1958 to 1975, then moved to Aberdeen in 1977, where they owned and operated the Riverview Motel until 1986. Verna thrived on working with people and staying active. In 1984 Verna became a part-time employee at Shopko, while in 1986 became a Federal Test Administrator with the Office of Personnel Management, both of which she continued until her death. Shopko recognized her as one of the first and longest employees with over 24 years of service and also committed 22 years to Office of Personnel Management.

Though Verna enjoyed working, her first priorities were always God and her family. Throughout her life, she was a gifted encourager with a kind word for everyone. She lived a life motivated by love and generosity. Her gracious and giving spirit was always embodied by a warm invitation to stay in their home, have a wonderful home-cooked meal or just come and have a cup of coffee. She genuinely cared for and took a personal interest in each person who came into her life. Active in church and community over the years, she taught Sunday School, held offices in the Extension Club, Better Leola Club, the Women’s Missionary Society, Hub City Sam’s Camping Club and was a member of the Aberdeen Senior Center and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. She enjoyed camping, gardening and fishing. Her greatest joy was always her family. It was important to her that her children had a strong spiritual upbringing; she taught them to love the Lord, encouraged them to be themselves and was proud of each one of them. Her legacy of love will be cherished by all those who surrounded her.

Verna was a devoted and loving wife, mother and special grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 59 years, Wesley Rueb; her daughter and son-in-law, John and Glenda Shepela, Waldorf, Maryland; her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sandra (Hoffman) Rueb and sons, Brian, Elliot and Justin, Plentywood, Montana; and son and daughter-in-law, Gavin and Connie (Dafoe) Rueb and children, Nicole, Wesley and Eric, Brussels, Belgium.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Myron and Melvin Ernst.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials go to Calvary Baptist Church in honor of Verna Rueb.

RUTH KOLB

The service for Ruth Kolb, 80, Westport, will be 10:30am, Monday, March 31, 2008 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor D.T. Rawerts officiating. Burial will be 1:30pm at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola. Ruth died Thursday, March 27, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 2-7pm Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Ruth Schumack was born on February 19, 1928 at Leola, SD to Pete and Amelia (Schmidt) Schumack. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. On March 14, 1948 she married Herbert Kolb at Leola, SD. They made their home on a farm northeast of Leola until 1950 when they moved to a farm near Hecla. In 1951 they moved to Westport and in 1978 they moved to a farm near Westport and lived in a house that the Hutterites built.

Ruth really enjoyed working outside, driving her 4020 tractor, and raising her baby calves. She loved gardening and fishing.

Grateful for having shared Ruth’s life are her husband, Herbert, Westport; sons, Robert(Kristi)Kolb, Westport; Steve (Terri) Kolb, Westport; grandchildren, Mathew & Quentin Kolb; Miranda Kolb; Jessica Ross; Jamie (Grady) Ollhoff; Karrie (Justin) Walters; great-grandchildren, Newman; Riley, Owen, Ethan, Ashley and Carter.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Amelia Schumack; son, Kenneth Kolb; brothers, Edmund & Fred.

BEVERLY PADGETT

The funeral service for Beverly Padgett, 80, Aberdeen is 10:00 am Saturday, March 29, 2008 at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial is 1:30 pm Saturday at Milbank City Cemetery, Milbank, SD. Beverly died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation is 1-7 pm Friday, with family present from 5-7 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Beverly June Kuper was born at Marvin, SD on June 8, 1927 to Henry and Thelma (Rude) Kuper. She attended country school near Twin Brooks, SD.

On January 9, 1946 Beverly married Henry G. DeClercq at Milbank, SD. Born to them were three children, Daryle, Janice, and Margaret. They farmed north of Milbank until August 25, 1958, when Henry passed away.

On July 29, 1961, she married Kenneth Padgett at Milbank. They lived near Marvin on his parent’s farm until 1964, when they moved to Aberdeen. Beverly worked for Americana Healthcare Center, St. Luke’s Hospital, Dakota Midland Hospital, and Retired Sisters of Presentation College. She took great interest in her work until she retired due to ill health. Kenneth died on December 15, 1995.

Beverly was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was active in the choir and served in Circle E at the church. Beverly taught Sunday School at the United Methodist Church in Milbank. Beverly was also a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed making crafts, and has The President Quilt on display at the Dakotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen. Beverly loved children and was active with the Foster Grandparents, working at the School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She also was honored as the 2002 Senior Snow Queen at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Grateful for having shared Beverly’s life are her son, Daryle (Lucy) DeClercq, Aberdeen; two daughters: Janice (Garth) Wagenman, Flagstaff, AZ, and Margaret (Leo) Obenauer, Alexandria, MN; her sister, Linda (Tom) Pauli, Milbank, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, infant sister, Marcella Kuper, brothers: Neil Kuper, and Dean Kuper
