Andrew Westra was born March 25, 1919 to John & Minnie Westra in Sheldon, IA. He spent his childhood in Rock Rapids, IA and eventually lived in Sioux Falls where he graduated from Washington High School in 1939.

After graduation, Andy started his career with Montgomery Wards in Sioux Falls. In August 1941, Andy married his beautiful bride, Florence Schrag. This blessed marriage was shared for over sixty-five years. In 1942, Andy was called into service for WWII and they moved to Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Andy was honorably discharged in October 1944.

Andy went back to work for Montgomery Wards, spending time in Madison and Watertown, SD and in Minot, ND and in 1947, the couple moved back to Sioux Falls where they opened their own Marshall Wells Hardware Store. In February 1957, they sold the business to Ace Hardware. The Westra’s then moved to Edina, MN where Andy managed a Marshall Wells Store in The Southdale Shopping Center. He was a District Manager for Marshall Wells until 1959 when the family moved to Aberdeen, SD. They purchased the Coast-to-Coast Store. This family owned and operated business was a well known part of the Main Street community and was the largest Coast-to-Coast Store in the United States. In 1992, Andy and Florence closed the store and retired for a few months but Andy continued working part time at various businesses in the years to come.

Andy lived his life with an unparalleled enthusiasm and with a voracious dedication to those around him. His limitless energy and love of people made him a leader that his family and community depended on. Andy had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen since 1959. He was active as a Deacon and an Elder and was chosen 1994 Outstanding Senior Presbyterian of the five state region. He was also the last remaining living charter member of the First Reformed Church, Sioux Falls. These churches were pillars in Andy and Florence’s lives.

While in Aberdeen, Andy was a member of the Lion’s Club, served as Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, the Board of the YMCA, coach of the Downtown Quarterback Club, President of the Brown County Sportman’s Club, served on the Aberdeen Credit Board, and as the 1994 Honorary Chairman of the Salvation Army Fund Drive. Andy was also a member of the Aberdeen Elks and the Masonic Lodge. He was a passionate supporter of the Aberdeen sports community, especially Central High School activities and Smittys Baseball.

Andy had a lifetime relationship with Northern State University. Andy was the oldest living “King of the Gyps” an honor, he received in 1968. He served on the Business Advisory Board, NSU’s Baseball Club Board and a member of the NSU Wolves Club. He was the first person to buy his reserved tickets at Wachs Arena. This arena is a favorite place of the Westra family and his passion and love for the Wolves Basketball program gave him a constant positive focus in his life, especially in his last years.

Andy’s reputation as a fisherman was legendary. He loved to go fishing, anytime, anywhere, and he loved his fishing buddies. He never missed a Twins or Vikings game. His morning coffee group was one of his daily rituals-many wonderful friendships were shared around that table. He and Florence traveled extensively together and spent wonderful summers at their Lake Miltona Cabin in Alexandria, MN. Anyone who spent more than a minute with him was never a stranger again.

The absolute center of Andy’s life, was his loving family. Nothing in his busy life came before his wife, children, and grandchildren. He treasured close relationships with his six brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish his life and honor his immense presence in this world are his son, Richard (Ginger) and their daughters Shannon (Todd) Imbery; Shelley (Ronn) Heier, all of Aberdeen; his son, Douglas (Glenna), Live Oak, CA and their sons Andrew of Marshall MN., and Matthew of Missoula, MT; his daughter Beth (Steven) Mills and their children Adam and his fiancé, Allisyn Jensen, Lincoln, NE, Katie, of Sioux Falls; Dwayne’s sons, Jeffrey (Mychel) Westra of Prescott Valley, AZ and Chad (Kirstin) Westra of Sioux Falls; and his daughter-in-law Janie Westra and her family of Chandler, AZ; ten great grandchildren, brother, John (Joy) Westra, Centerville, SD; brother-in-laws, Howard Schrag, Clifford Madland, Don VanderPol.

Andy’s incredible spirit will live on in all who knew and loved him. The lessons he taught of faith, courage, and the belief that with God, all things are possible, will sustain us all. In his 6th grade essay, the ending statement simply said “What I hope to do in the future years is to be a very worthwhile and honest person”…a job well done.
