ANN BIERMAN

Services for Ann Bierman, 72, Aberdeen are 10 am, Thursday, May 1, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mansfield, SD with Pastor Wesley Hafner officiating. Burial in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Ann died Friday, April 25, at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, as a result of a brain aneurism.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with a prayer service at 7.

Ann Niemann was born at Pleasantview, IN on April 26, 1935 to Gustafus & Edna (Brinkman) Niemann.

On June 25, 1955 Ann married Richard Heidenreich at Mansfield. On June 14, 1982 she married Lyle Bierman. Ann devoted the first part of her life to raising her children, as well as serving as a foster parent for a brief period of time. She held a variety of occupations including bookkeeping for various businesses and owner of the Mansfield Bar and Supper Club. At the age of fifty-six she received her Associate Arts degree from Northern State College. She worked as a Juvenile Detention Officer at the Brown County Jail until her retirement in 2004.

Ann was a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous celebrating twenty-one years of sobriety. She was a member of Al Anon for twenty-two years, serving as a facilitator for many of those years.

Ann’s hobbies included quilting, needle work, sewing, doing crossword puzzles, and playing cards. Ann was known for always having a deck of cards and a packet of dice ready when visiting her grandchildren. Ann doted on her grandchildren and loved spending time with them.

Grateful for having shared Ann’s life are her husband, Lyle Bierman, Aberdeen; mother, Edna Niemann, children, Bryan (Karen) Bierman; Rick (Daisy) Heidenreich; Sue (Dan) Fritz; Doug Bierman; Julie (Rick) Frentz; Scott (Jeanne) Bierman; Bill (Tina) Heidenreich; Janell (Dick) Meyer; Mary (Larry) Payne; Todd (Kari) Bierman; Don (Linda) Heidenreich; Lynn Bierman; Michael (Marcy) Bierman; Jim (Connie) Heidenreich; John (Sue) Heidenreich; Eric (Lindsey) Heidenreich; thirty-eight grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; brother, Donald (Diane) Niemann; and sister-in-law, Nancy Niemann.

She is preceded in death by her father; brother, Dale; and daughter, Sara Ann.

LUCIA WEGNER

The funeral service for Lucia Wegner, 92, Aberdeen, will be 11:00 am, Monday, April 28, 2008, at Richland Wesleyan Church with Pastor Ron Wickard & Pastor Earl Olson officiating. Burial will be at Richland Cemetery. Lucia died Thursday, April 24 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitaion will be from 12-5pm, Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Lucia Nellie Rose was born January 22, 1916 at Watertown, SD to Royal & Anna (Hessel) Rose. She attended school in Pollock, SD through the eigth grade. She spent time caring for her mother. On September 12, 1946, Lucia married William Wegner at Mobridge, SD. They spent their lives together on a ranch where they enjoyed raising sheep until William died in 1970. Lucia enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.

Lucia was a member of the Aberdeen Wesleyan Church for many years and was a member of the birthday club.

Grateful for having shared her life are her nieces, Lorretta Thares, Ipswich, SD, Annette Curtis, Independence, MO; nephew, Robert Wegner, West Virginia; and special friend Rosalie Meyers.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers.

MAHLON GROSS

Memorial service for Mahlon Gross, 81, Aberdeen is 2:00pm, Saturday, April 26, 2008 at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Inurnment at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis at a later date. Mahlon died Wednesday, April 23, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

A time to sign the register book will be from 1-7pm, Friday with family present from 6-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Mahlon Henry Gross was born at Bowdle, SD to Henry & Elsie (Lueck) Gross on September 7, 1926. He attended school in Bowdle and graduated from high school in 1944. Mahlon joined the US Navy in 1944 and served until July 1946. He attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and SDSU. Mahlon worked as a carpenter for J.K. Kurle and Sons for many years. He joined the staff at the Bowdle State Bank where he worked for thirty-two years. Mahlon was the manager of the Bank Insurance Agency, Vice President of the bank, and secretary of the board of directors.

On March 21, 1954 Mahlon married Arelene Schlepp.

Mahlon was a member of the U.C.C. Church and later Evangel united Methodist Church, Bowdle, where he served as the church treasurer for many years, trustee, and usher. Presently Mahlon was a member of First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. He was a member of the Bowdle American Legion and served as their finance officer for many years. Mahlon also served on the board of directors of the Prairie View Housing, Bowdle, and was treasurer of that for many years. Mahlon loved woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing, and yardwork.

Grateful for having shared Mahlon’s life are his wife, Arelene Gross, Aberdeen; sons, Timothy (Linda) Gross, Spearfish, SD; Tom Gross, Aberdeen; grandson, Christian Gross; sister, Doris Campbell, Germantown, TN; nephews, William Burnham, Cordova, TN; Michael (Susan) Gross, Colorado Springs, CO; nieces, Liza (Joe) Namie, Memphis, TN; Mary Page, Memphis, TN; Katherine Landreth, Reno, NV; and sister-in-law; Frances Gross, Brookfield, WI.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Calvin and Guilford.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to First United Methodist Church.

JAMES L. CURRINGTON, Jr.

Memorial service for James L. Currington, Jr., 49, of Aberdeen will be at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 26, 2008 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Pastor Hyle Anderson will be officiating. Jim lost his battle with cancer on April 22, 2008.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born on December 25, 1958 in Columbus, Georgia to James and Edith (Craft) Currington. They moved to Aberdeen where he graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1977. Jim was a member of the high school A cappella Choir and the Drama Club. He taught himself how to play the guitar and enjoyed playing for years.

Jim married Lindy Trumbo on July 11, 1980 in Aberdeen. Jim and Lindy were married almost 28 years and enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, music, bowling and remodeling and building projects. They were very involved with volunteering for The American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life” as committee members, and working one on one with other cancer patients to encourage them. Jim also volunteered as a Little League Baseball Coach.

Jim graduated from the Lake Area Vocational Technical Institute with a certificate in automobile mechanics in May, 1983. Jim retired from the United States Navy on March 31, 2001 after serving 22 years as a jet engine mechanic on F-14 Fighter Aircraft. As a Second Class Petty Officer, Jim earned his Air Warfare Wings, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, C.G. Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Grateful for having shared Jim’s life are his wife, Lindy, mother, Edith Brick, brother, Rocky (Susan), brother, Gerald (Cindy), sister Angela (Scotty) Stephen, step-brother Wesley (Sherry) Brick, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his father James, and step-father LaVerne Brick.

Jim touched many lives with his positive attitude, love for God and his family.

He lived his life to the fullest, treasuring every single day.

LEONA ELLIOTT

The funeral service for Leona Mae Elliott, 92, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Plymouth Congregational Church with Pastor Richard Fylling officiating. Burial will be 10:30am, Wednesday, April 30, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, MN. Leona died Tuesday, April 22, at Primrose Place.

Visitation will be from 2-8pm, Friday with family present from 5-8pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Leona Mae Crawford was born on July 14, 1915 to William and Elsie (Garrett) Crawford at the family farm home in Faulk County, SD, where she grew up working alongside her dad doing farm chores and field work. Leona attended Myron Township Elementary School through the 8th Grade, and later as an adult, she earned a high school equivalency diploma.

On June 5th, 1935 Leona married George Elliott at Selby, South Dakota. They began their married life farming in Faulk Co., where they had two children: Wesley and Anna Mae. In 1942 the family moved to Aberdeen where Leona worked as a cook at Woolworth’s lunch counter and became very active in the Women of the Moose serving in all the elected offices.

In 1955 George’s work took them to Austin, MN, and a few years later to Winona, MN where they resided until his death in 1999. While there Leona became very active in the Eastern Star, again serving in all the elected offices, including that of Worthy Matron three times.

In 2003, Leona returned to Aberdeen to be closer to family. Two years ago she moved into an apartment at Primrose Place. Leona was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, where she was baptized in 1948. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, and playing cards, especially bridge. Leona loved to travel and spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Leona’s life are her children, Wes (Arlene) Elliott, Aberdeen; Anna Mae Sorom, Las Vegas, NV; eight grandchildren: Wes II (Anne) Elliott, South Riding, VA; Jon (Karen) Elliott, Inwood, WV; Mark Elliott, Winchester, VA; Jason (Staci) Elliott, Manassas Park, VA; David Elliott, Killeen, TX; E. Michael (Michelle) Sorom, Las Vegas, NV; Richard D. Sorom, Las Vegas, NV; William T. (Kathleen) Sorom; Las Vegas, NV; sixteen great grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary, Connor, Alexandra, Joshua, Jennifer, Stephen, Issac, Morgan, and Trinity Elliott; and, Marty, Russell, Ruthie, Jeffrey, Kaylamae, and Samantha Sorom, and sister, Ione Zahalka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Elliott; two sisters, Florence Lauritzen & Ramona Buchanan; brother Floyd Crawford; and son-in-law Earl R. Sorom.

BETTY JANE WALTH

The funeral service for Betty Jane Walth, 76, of Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor John Farden and Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Betty died Friday, April 17, 2008 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation is 1 to 7pm, Monday, April 21 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. Family will be present from 5 to 7 with a prayer service at 7pm.

Betty Jane Nelson was born on October 26, 1931 to Louis and Jennie (Johnson) Nelson near Bath, South Dakota. She attended rural school near Bath. Betty married Otto H. Walth on September 4, 1969 in Aberdeen. Together they raised two daughters. Betty worked for Kressge’s as a sales clerk for over thirty years. Otto passed away September 17, 2004.

Betty enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking and dancing. She will be fondly remembered by her family for her fancy work, homemade brownies, family haircuts and permanents. Betty especially treasured time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Betty’s life are her daughter, Doris Vilhauer of Aberdeen: her five grandchildren; Jeff Vilhauer of Aberdeen, Kelly (Suzanne) Vilhauer of Hosmer, Kathy (Darren) Gaub of Aberdeen, Jason Vilhauer of Aberdeen, Darin Vilhauer of Aberdeen; eight great-grandchildren, Hailey and Hannah Vilhauer, Belinda, Rachel, Tristan, Jacob, Lilliana and Kaden Gaub; four sisters, Gladys (Glen) Gullickson, Lois (Donald) Marko, Marlys (Mike) Kraft, Darlys (Roger) Marko; and one brother, Calvin Oriole Nelson.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one daughter, Barbara Aman; four sisters, Florence Hinz, Lucille Zweifel, Dorothy Heagley and Beverly Schilling and two brothers, Melvin and Donald Nelson.

FRITZ ROSEBROCK

The funeral service for Fritz Rosebrock, 71, Aberdeen will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 25, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1732 S. Main St., Aberdeen with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Entombment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Fritz died Saturday, April 12 at his home after a brief battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Thursday, April 24, with family present from 5-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Fritz was born on June 11, 1936 to Frederick and Thea (Mueller) Rosebrock in Aberdeen, SD. Fritz graduated from Frederick High School in 1956. Fritz attended SDSU and Normal Industrial College.

On August 18, 1957, Fritz married Jean Hartze at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.

They made their home on the family farm that has been in the Rosebrock family since 1882. He received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award, Goodyear Conservation Award and Production Credit Association Steward of Soil Award. He was a farm equipment sales representative and received the Sales Master Award and the Top Ten Salesman from Case Tractor Company. He was a real estate broker and had his real estate license and Series 3 Securities License.

In 1997 Fritz and Jean moved to Aberdeen. He was the territory rep for Steine Seed Company. He then became the territory rep for the Credit Bureau for Aberdeen and the surrounding area.

Fritz’s community involvement included: Brown County Fair Board, Brown County Weed Board President, Brown County Livestock Improvement Board President, National Farmer’s Organization, Osceola Township Clerk, Frederick High School Alumni Board President, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Council President, Frederick Teen Center Board President, 4H Leader and member of the Aberdeen Elks Lodge and Ellendale Country Club. He was currently serving on the City of Aberdeen Planning and Zoning Board and was currently serving as President of the Inman Condo Association.

He enjoyed hunting and was a SD Trophy Hunter. He enjoyed entering his dad’s 1966 Ford Galaxy in local car shows, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Fritz’s life are his wife, Jean Rosebrock, Aberdeen; children, Janet (Jeff) Hedges, Aberdeen; Kay (Scott) Keller, Anchorage, AK; Todd (Barb) Rosebrock, Aberdeen; grandchildren, Sarah Hedges; Sadie Hedges; Jerome Keller; Dan Washenberger; Heidi (Trevor) Russell; Justin Rosebrock; Whitney Rosebrock; Sydney Rosebrock; great-grandchildren, Austin Russell; Cody Russell; LaVayah Russell; and sister, Ilse Cameron.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Robert Rosebrock; sister, Thea Rosebrock; and brother-in-law, Jerry Cameron.

GERI DOCKTOR

The memorial service for Geri Docktor, 83, Aberdeen, is 1:00pm, Thursday, July 31, at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Geri died July 27, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Geri Williams was born October 18, 1924, at Lake Williams, ND to Joe & Cora Williams. She lived in Lake Williams until she was twelve, at which time she moved to Lodi, California, where she graduated high school. She attended the Jamestown School of Business, and later the Northern Pacific Telegraphy College, in Jamestown, ND.

Geri worked as a model in New York City for five years. She was a fashion model, modeling mostly furs. On October 23, 1948 Geri married Roy Docktor and had one son Joe. She began working for Montgomery Ward’s for several years as an executive assistant, and later manager for Stevenson's Dress Store. Geri began a career with IHS Administrative Services in Aberdeen. She then became an Auditor in Finance. Geri was the Account Executive for the Bureau of Indian Health for many years until her retirement. After retiring, Geri and Roy enjoyed traveling together.

Geri was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Ladies Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Eagles, Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary, Elks Club, Aberdeen Senior Center, AARP, and Volunteer Senior IRS Tax Preparer.

Geri enjoyed bowling, baking, golfing, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. She enjoyed playing bridge and her Bridge Club.

Her family, friends, and church will remember Geri for her loving, caring, giving manor. She was a generous outgoing woman who enjoyed people and health permitting, would be there for all when needed. She was dearly loved and will be sincerely missed and always remembered.

Grateful for having shared Geri’s life are her son, Joe (Shereen) Docktor, Aberdeen; grandchildren, J.J. Docktor, Aberdeen; Charity (Jason) Ayres, Suffolk, VA; great grandchildren, Taylor & Alexandria Ayres; numerous nieces & nephews; and special friend, Floyd Spilde.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Ken Brady; sisters, Frankie Hahn; Sally Loudon; and Peggy Kramer.
