MIKE WALSH

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mike Walsh, 58, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joe Holzhauser, Celebrant. Lunch will be served immediately following the service at Jerde Hall on the campus of NSU. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Mike died Tuesday, July 8, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Visitation will be Friday, July 11 from 6-7pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rd Ave. SE. Aberdeen, followed by a Wake service at 7pm.

Michael Bruce Walsh was born on February 12, 1950 to Frank and Martha (Foster) Walsh at Onida, SD. They lived in Onida until moving to Pierre, SD when Mike was four. Mike grew up and attended school at St. Joseph Middle School and graduated from Riggs High School. Mike was a state champion wrestler in high school and wrestled at Northern State College. He graduated from NSC in 1974 and went on to receive his MBA at the University of North Dakota. Mike’s first job out of college was as a CPA at Harlan-Peterson. He then began teaching accounting at Northern State University, retiring in 2005 after 29 years of teaching. He bought the Zoo in 1986, and made many people very happy when he and Lowell Punt revitalized the longstanding institution of Lager’s Inn in 2000. Throughout the years, Mike also continued to practice accounting and consulting, which came in handy when negotiating strokes on the golf course.

Mike married Cindi Mefford on October 28, 1989 at Aberdeen, SD. He became a father at a late age compared to most, and one of his greatest joys was the time he got to spend with his sons, Michael and Ben. He particularly enjoyed watching them turn into good golfers, and watching football with them.

Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aberdeen. He was a board member of Wolve’s Club and Moccasin Creek Country Club. Golfing was Mike’s greatest passion. He would golf every day that he could, and lived for the camaraderie he found on his many golfing trips. He also liked bowling and hunting. Mike enjoyed family trips and being the entertainer for his family and friends. Mike had a great sense of humor, was a wonderful storyteller and made friends wherever he went. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Within the last month, Mike was overheard saying that he was thankful for how lucky he was to have lived the life he had. Before he went on his last motorcycle trip, he said he had been able to do everything he had wanted in life, and if he were to leave this world the next day, he would be content. He lived more in his 58 years than most do in a much longer lifetime, and enjoyed life to its fullest.

The family prefers memorials to the Michael B. Walsh Endowment Fund, 620 15 Ave SE, Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Mike’s life are his wife, Cindi Walsh and his sons, Michael and Ben Walsh, all of Aberdeen, one brother, John (Bonnie) Walsh, Harrison, AR, five sisters: Terry DeYonge, Vermillion, SD, Judy Stoudt, Ft. Pierre, SD, Mary Lou (Curt) Goehring, Pierre, SD, Miki (Deene) Dayton, Pierre, SD and Eileen (Randy) Horn, Sioux Falls, SD, and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Martha, and his favorite hunting dog, Gloria.
