Mary’s parents homesteaded in Adams County, ND. Then moved to Lemmon, SD, where she attended her first three grades. She then moved to Fargo, ND, where she attended fourth through part of the fifth grade at St. John’s Catholic School. Mary then came to Aberdeen and resided with her Aunt Lena (Mrs. John Stinson), attending Monroe School through seventh grade. Her mother returned to Aberdeen by that time; her father having died in 1920. Mary then attended Aberdeen Central High School, graduating with the Class of 1925, when the family lived at 1208 S. Lloyd, an area of Aberdeen that was practically in the country at that time-farm land all around.

While in high school, Mary worked at the North Side Drug Store and sometimes during the winter months would work part-time at the Northside Bakery-clerking in both places. Following graduation from high school, she took a short business course at the Aberdeen Business College. Then from 1925-1927 she procured employment in Ipswich, SD. On June 10, 1929, Mary married Terry Leroy Fulker at Custer, SD, in the Methodist Parsonage. On March 1, 1930, they moved to their farm at Bath.

Mary was a dedicated mother and community volunteer and leader, active in Bath community affairs and the production of Bath Community Club entertainment. Mary served several years as Republican Precinct Woman for Bath Township; then until 1957 served as County Vice Chair and she was the first woman to serve as Republican State Vice Chair until she resigned in 1965. Her work in politics took her to Washington, DC several times and an opportunity to work with then Senator Mundt, Governor Sigruid Anderson, and others. She ran for several county offices--Commissioner and Clerk of Courts and State Representative, for which as everyone knows she did not get elected, but as she said: “It was an interesting and educational experience.” In 1973 she was appointed by Governor Kneip as an Ambassador of the Diplomatic Corp of SD. While she eventually had to discontinue her active involvement in politics, her interest and concern remained to the end.

In 1964 Mary became Manager of the Aberdeen office of Capitol Security Life Insurance Company-- then worked in the Claims Department. She trained to be head of the department and underwriting in Sioux Falls, but resigned as she did not want to live in Sioux Falls permanently.

From 1966-1972 she worked with the SD Division of the American Cancer Society as an Area Director supervising twenty-four counties in the NE corner of section of the State. The policy of the American Cancer Society required that she retire at the age of sixty-five.

Mary lived in her farm home at Bath for seventy-five years before ill health required her to move to ManorCare in Aberdeen. However, her life-long love of reading helped sustain her and one could always find a book in her hand while there.
