BERNICE WALTHER

The funeral service for Bernice Walther, 72, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Friday, August 29, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Bernice died Saturday, August 23, at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Visitation: 1-7pm, Thursday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Bernice Lorenz was born September 11, 1935 near Java, SD to Emanuel & Mary (Kranzler) Lorenz Bohling. She grew up in rural Java. Bernice attended grade school at Java, where she met her future husband Marvin Walther. They were married April 6, 1956 at Selby, SD. Bernice & Marvin lived in Aberdeen, before making their home in Westport, SD. In 1977, they moved back to Aberdeen.

Bernice worked at Tiffany Laundry for several years. She then worked as a house keeper, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital until her retirement. Bernice then worked at Mercury Cleaners and helped out at Kusler’s.

Bernice was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She loved flowers, reading, computer games, e-mailing, & bingo. Bernice was an animal lover who always had a cat. She loved helping others and even donated over ten gallons of blood at United Blood Services.

Bernice cherished spending time with her family, with whom she was very close. She was very welcoming and giving to all. Bernice & Marvin were known to most as “Ma & Dad”. Her love was unconditional.

Grateful for having shared Bernice’s life are her husband, Marvin, Aberdeen; children, Dale Diedtrich, Sioux Falls; Clyde (Tina) Walther, Aberdeen; Alan Walther, Aberdeen; Deb (Larry) Hansen, Warner; Anita Barlow, Aberdeen; Connie Clark, Aberdeen; Barry (Cindy) Walther, Tyler, MN; grandchildren, Robert; Josh; Brittany; A.J. Walther; Amanda (Jason) Nagel; Rebecca (Bryan Wolf) Weig; Brent (Jacey) Weig; Sarah (Michael) Stanfield; Caleb & Casey Barlow; Mellisa (Jeremy) Taylor; Preston Walther; great grandchildren, Collin; Blake; Kimberly; Brandon; & Brian Stanfield; Abigail & Braiden Taylor; Nevaeh Nagel; Hunter Wolf; Kaleigh, Madyson, & Peyton Gross; sisters, Joyce (Bob) Mentzer, Aberdeen; Irene (Cy) Kaiser; and Carol (Ralph) Hilgemann, Jamestown, ND.

She is preceded in death by her parents; step father; three sisters; and three brothers.

VIOLET L. BIERMAN

The service for Violet L. Bierman, 87, Aberdeen, will be 11:00 am, Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church rural Mansfield, SD with Pastor Wesley Hafner officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Mansfield. Violet died Thursday, August 21, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, August 22, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Violet Slater was born February 10, 1921 to Roy & Edna (Diestler) Slater on a farm about ten miles northeast of Cresbard. She attended the country school for eight years. She then went on to high school in Cresbard, graduating with the Class of 1938. In the fall of 1939, Violet went to beauty school, where she graduated in March of 1940. She worked as a beautician until she married Clarence Bierman on December 19, 1940. They made their home on a farm in the Mansfield area until moving to Aberdeen in 1991. Violet and Clarence had five children: Linda, Wanda, Daryl, Elton, & one infant twin son who died at birth.

Violet was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield since 1941. She was also a member of the Mansfield Legion Auxiliary and the Warner Senior Citizens. Violet & Clarence enjoyed attending area dances and in 1972 they joined a bowling league which Violet continued for thirty years. After Clarence died in 1995, Violet continued to enjoy bowling and playing cards with friends.

Grateful for having shared Violet’s life are her children, Linda (Wilmer) Brandt, Sturgis; Wanda Bremmon, Sioux Falls; Daryl (Maurine) Bierman, Aberdeen; Elton Bierman, Rapid City; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy & Edna Slater; husband, Clarence; one infant son, Lynn; two brothers; Melvin Slater and Wilber “Bud” Slater, three sisters, Phyllis Middlewood; Ione Stovern; and Miriam Stoner; and one daughter-in-law, DaLene Bierman.

LLOYD R. MILBRANDT

The service for Lloyd R. Milbrandt, 94, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am Friday, August 22, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Lloyd died Monday, August 18, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Lloyd Richard Milbrandt was born July 17, 1914 to Charles & Lillie (Sieman) Milbrandt at Westport, SD. He attended school at Westport.

Lloyd married Doris Becker August 19, 1939 at Hecla, SD.

Lloyd worked on farms in the Westport area. He also worked on defense projects in Denver, CO, Provo, UT, & Rapid City, SD. They moved to Aberdeen in 1940. Lloyd worked for the Brown County Highway Department for thirty-seven years, retiring in 1982.

Lloyd was a member of First Baptist Church in Aberdeen where he was an usher for many years.

Lloyd was an active member of the Aberdeen Senior Center where he delivered meals on wheels. He spent many hours playing pool and won many trophies.

Grateful for having shared Lloyd’s life are his three daughters: Joan (Ron) Sonnenfeld, Henderson, NV; Jean Hughes, Henderson, NV and Carol (Terry) Hawkins, Clancy, MT; daughter-in-law: Norma (Don) Dennert, Aberdeen; twin sister: Lola Pautsch, Aberdeen; grandchildren: Penny Prichard, Mark (Rhonda) Sonnenfeld, John (Joni) Hughes, Janelle (Mike) Bianchi, Julie Hughes, Jeff Hughes, Richard (Mary) Milbrandt, Gregory (Nancy) Milbrandt, Marcy (David) Leary, Todd (Wendi) Hawkins and Becky Hawkins; great grandchildren: Phillip Hughes, Emily Hughes, Jacob Hughes, Cooper Hughes, Krystal Streit, DJ Hughes, Jeff Hughes, Cassie Hughes, Bradford Milbrandt, Kyle Milbrandt, Cassandra Leary, Alekzander Leary, Ashleigh Prichard, Ryan Prichard, Markus Sonnenfeld, Rhianna Sonnenfeld, and Delaney Hawkins; and many nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Doris on June 3, 2008; parents; two sons: Byron “Butch” Milbrandt and Charles Milbrandt; son-in-law, Jack Hughes; granddaughter, Carmen Hawkins; great grandson, David Leary; two brothers: Walter and Ernest; four sisters: Inez Parsons, Mabel Walker, Ella Schreiner, Minnie Forrest; five brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

SR. HELEN DEIS

Sister Helen Deis, 93, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died on August 15, 2008 at Presentation Convent.

The funeral for Sister Helen will be Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at

11:00 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A scriptural wake service will be Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Celebrants for the Mass will be Reverend Michael Kelly and Reverend Dennis Deis OMI, a cousin to Sister Helen.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main Street, in charge of arrangements.

Helen was born August 14, 1915 at Onaka, SD to Theresa (Fiest) and Lorenz Deis.

Helen entered Presentation Convent September 1, 1936 and made her first profession of vows on August 12, 1939. At that time she was known as Sister Jude. She received her GED in 1946. She studied at Presentation College and did one year of CPE classes at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls

Sister Helen served as a Nurse Aid at hospitals in Chicago from 1931-1936 before entering the convent. As a Presentation Sister she ministered in food service departments at St. Joseph Hospital, Mitchell; Notre Dame Academy, Mitchell; the convent in Aberdeen; St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen and McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. From 1974-1976 she worked in pastoral care at St. Luke’s and McKennan Hospitals. In 1976 she returned to the motherhouse and worked in supportive services, as sacristan and chapel attendant. She retired in 2002.

Sister Helen is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters: and 3 sisters; Theresa Schmidt, Aberdeen, SD; Clara and Lewis Barondeau, Conde, SD and Rosemary Andus, Monterey, CA. She is preceded in death by her parents (Theresa and Lorenz); four sisters (Josephine, Othelia, Kathryn, Mary) and four brothers (Joseph, Jacob, John, Larry).

Nephews of Sister Helen will served as casket bearers; David and Ronald Schmidt, Larry and Clarence Mitzel, Lawrence Schile, Lynn Sanderson and Dale Washnok.

EDWIN L. HOTTMAN

Services for Edwin L. Hottman, Jr., 67, Aberdeen will be 10:30 am, Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Dianne Rood Kiesz officiating. Burial at the Eureka City Cemetery at 2 pm. Edwin died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-5 pm, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Edwin LeRoy Hottman, Jr. was born on July 20, 1941 at Eureka, SD to Edwin and Melinda (Burrer) Hottman, Sr. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from the Eureka High School with the class of 1959. He moved to Portland, OR where he worked in the shipyard. He then attended the Radio Broadcasting School in Bismarck, ND. He worked for various construction companies. He worked for Watertown Monument Company for several years and then for the US Postal Service until he retired due to his health.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Billy Oldenkamp, daughter, Jessica McGuire, brother, Michael Hottman, sister, Virginia (Kenneth) Erdmann, special friend, Bertha Oldenkamp and grandson, Dylan Oldenkamp all of Aberdeen.

Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Delores Hottman and Ruby Buffington.

BONNIE PENDRY

The memorial service for Bonnie Pendry, , Aberdeen, will be 10:00 am, Monday, August 18, 2008, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with Pastor Vicki Faude -Worthington officiating. Bonnie died Thursday, August 14, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Bonnie Pendry was born in Loyalton, SD (Edmunds County), to Horace & Matilda (Larson) Wilson on May 9, 1916. She attended school in Edmunds County, Waubay, Stratford, and Aberdeen.

Bonnie married Percy Pendry on November 8, 1947 and they made their home in Wetonka until moving to Trenton, MI in 1950 and returned “home” upon retirement.

Bonnie worked as a waitress, cook and home care provider. She was active in VSP and Seniors. Bonnie loved to make donuts, crochet and play cards.

Bonnie is loved by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen (Alexander) McNeil; sister, Lorraine Montgomery; sister-in-law, Wanda Wilson; grandchildren, Bonnie (Tony) Atkinson and their son, Tony II; Lance (Debbie) Dockter and their sons, Ian & Zach Walker and Dakotah Dockter; Candace Sovlansky and her son, Bradley; step grandsons, Ken (Susan) McNeil and daughters, Sabrina & Korrin; Richard McNeil & Andrew McNeil; also many nieces and nephews; especially her helpers, Connie & Jack Waltman.

Burial will be at Riverside where she will join her husband, parents, brother, and others in a family area. Also preceded in death by one great granddaughter, Carin.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

PERCY MJOLSNESS

The service for Percy Mjolsness, 88, Aberdeen, formerly of Webster, will be 1:00pm, Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Percy died Friday, August 15 at Bethesda Home of Webster.

Visitation will be from 1-6pm, Monday, with family present from 4-6pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Percy Howard Mjolsness was born August 8, 1920 to Peder & Hilda (Nerland) Mjolsness in Langford, SD. He attended school at Langford and Pierpont. When Percy finished school, he began working on the family farm with his dad, until 1947, when he and his folks moved to Webster, SD. For most of Percy’s life he sold Health, Accident, and Life Insurance. After retiring from the insurance business Percy moved to Alaska to work on the Alaskan Pipeline for a year and did various other jobs until retiring at age 65. After retiring, he began driving a Foster Grandparent Van for ten years from Aberdeen to Redfield State School, which he enjoyed!

Percy married Alma Mund in 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church, of which they were members ever since. To their union were born three sons.

Grateful for having shared Percy’s life are his sons, Ronald (Christian) Mjolsness, Lubbock, TX; Richard (Robin) Mjolsness, Beresford, SD; Russell (Suzanne) Mjolsness, Nevada, IA; sister, Irene Cavanaugh.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; and three brothers.

RALPH O. HAUG

Memorial services for Ralph O. Haug, 87, Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Thursday, August 14, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will be 3:00pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by Sydney L. Smith Post #24. Ralph died Monday, August 11, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Oliver Haug was born January 4, 1921, at Frederick, SD, to Krist & Amy (Johnson) Haug. He graduated from Frederick High School with the Class of 1939. Ralph became a cadet in the Army Air Force and was sent to the University of Missouri. This is where he met his wife, Lois Funk. In 1945, they moved back to Aberdeen, where Ralph worked for Consolidated Propane from 1952 to 1968. He then started working for a contractor doing carpenter work from 1968 to 1975 and then worked as a counselor for NADRIC until retiring in 1992.

During retirement, Ralph & Lois enjoyed traveling and visiting their grandchildren. He loved woodworking in his garage, building furniture, hunting, and gardening. Ralph was a member of the Elks, AA, Sons of Norway, and American Legion.

Grateful for having shared Ralph’s life are his wife, Lois Haug, Aberdeen; children, James (Lyn) Haug, Rapid City, SD; Jerry Haug, Vernon, NJ; Jeffrey Haug (Rick Fahel), St Paul, MN; Karen (Scott) Smith, Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Alexander, Jonathan, & Samuel Haug; Jeremy Haug; Erik, Jacob (Shanell), & Gabriel Smith.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Richard Haug; and two brothers.

MARVIN BONN

The service for Marvin L. Bonn, 69, Aberdeen will be 10:00 am, Friday, August 15, 2008 at First Baptist Church, 1500 E. Melgaard Road with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Jesus took Marvin to Heaven on Sunday, August 10, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation is from 1-7 pm, Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen with family present from 5-7.

Marvin LeRoy Bonn was born April 11, 1939, at Webster, SD to Joseph & Nina (Mereness) Bonn. He graduated from Groton High School with the Class of 1957. Marvin worked in sales and delivery for most of his adult life. He was employed by Brown County Coop; S.D. Wheat Growers Petroleum; Petroleum Partners for the past twenty years.

In 1959, Marvin married Helen Morey. To this union were born three sons & two daughters. He was married to Karen Hoops in 1981. They had one son. Marvin and Lois (Erdmann) Rogers married July 14, 1990.

Marvin was a former member of Emanuel Lutheran Church of Groton and later became a member of the Lutheran Church in Ferney. In recent years he attended First Baptist Church of Aberdeen with his wife, Lois. He trusted the Lord Jesus as his Savior.

Marvin liked horses and for many years was a member of East River Ropers, going on many trail rides. He enjoyed working, fishing (especially ice fishing) gardening, visiting with friends, attending sporting events, & TV. His favorites: “Walker”, Cops, Clint Eastwood, Hallmark movies, “old” boxing matches, & football games.

Grateful for having shared Marv’s life are his wife, Lois, Aberdeen; sons, Randy (Deb) Bonn, Aberdeen; Andre Bonn, Groton; Don (Jolene) Bonn, Aberdeen; Cody (Kristi) Bonn, Ferney, SD; Bob (Holly) Rogers, Aberdeen; Tim (Lisa) Rogers, Aberdeen; daughters, Jill Hinrichs, Claremont; Julie (Marty) Micko, Claremont; Deb Fear, Moorehead, MN; Sandy (Jim) Prchal, Omaha, NE; brothers, Jerry (Bev) Bonn, Conde, SD; Ronnie (Deanna) Bonn, Aberdeen; sisters, Lois (Bill) Nerland, Aberdeen; Margery (Maurice) Huber, Conde; Audrey Christianson, Warner; JoAnn (Duane) Haar, Roscoe; Joyce (Roy) Smith, Miami, FL; Mary (Roy) Geffre, Aberdeen; brother-in-laws, Emery Sippel, Groton; Dale Craig, Aberdeen; and Wilbert Fallon, Aberdeen; several nieces, nephews; twenty-four grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; many dear friends, and chocolate lab, Bruno.
