GEORGE H. NELSON

The funeral service for George Howard Nelson, 89, of Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. George died Tuesday, October 28, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, October 31, at the funeral home.

George Howard Nelson was born May 31, 1919, the son of Fred and Clara Nelson in Cresbard, SD. He was reared and educated in the Cresbard area. He married Leona “Onie” Dunker in Mansfield on November 27, 1941. They farmed in the Mansfield and Chelsea area and moved to Aberdeen in September, 1946. George was involved in trucking with the Dunker & Nelson Company in 1946-1947 when he became employed by EC Kettering. From 1948-1952 he was employed with Dakota Transfer while also being employed by Edwin Angerhofer Trucking and P.A. Bradbury. In 1952, he became a full-time livestock hauler for Edwin Angerhofer Trucking and continued driving until 1969. He began working for Wilbert Burial Vault (now Aberdeen Vault) in 1969 and worked full-time for them until his retirement in 1983. He continued working part-time for them after his retirement and became a resident of Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in April, 2005.

George was a member of the Dakota Musicians Association. He was a drummer with a band he helped form in the 70’s, the “Country Gents” and was also a drummer for the Vic Carlson Band in 1983-1986. He always enjoyed any style of country and old time music and dancing was a favorite pastime especially with partner, “Onie”. He was an active member of the Aberdeen Moose Lodge and donated much of his spare time in his retirement years to the lodge, where he also enjoyed playing pool.

Grateful for having shared George’s life are his son, Howard G. (Lavina) Nelson, Aberdeen, one daughter, LaVonne (Richard) Brick, Faribault, MN, a sister, Dorothy Haas, Volga, SD, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, Richard (Jalby) Dunker, Aberdeen, Jerry Dunker, Atwater, CA, and Bob Bronson, Ilwasco, WA, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leona “Onie,” in May of 1998, and one sister, Thelma Nelson.

MILBERT E. ELLWEIN

Funeral services for Milbert Ellwein, 91, Aberdeen will be at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Milbert died Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 28, 2008 from 5-8 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St.

Milbert Erwin Ellwein was born October 5, 1917, at Cottonwood Lake Township near Roscoe, SD to Albert & Caroline (Schumacher) Ellwein. He attended Cottonwood Lake Township School. Milbert was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Bowdle in 1917. He was confirmed in 1930 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Roscoe. After his education, he remained on the family farm.

Milbert married Martha Louise Preszler on October 3, 1937 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Roscoe. They made their home here where they farmed for eight years. In 1945 they moved into Roscoe where they owned and operated several businesses. They moved to the farm in 1965, where they lived until moving to Aberdeen in 1980.

Milbert was a member of Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years, where he served as Fire Chief for five years. He served on City Council for eight years and also was a school bus driver for eleven years. Milbert owned several businesses while living in Roscoe. After retiring, Milbert and Martha loved to travel.

Grateful for having shared Milbert’s life are his son, Donald (Betty) Ellwein; grandchildren, Charles (Joellen) Kramer; Steven (Danette) Kramer; Bruce (Autumn) Ellwein; Karen Ellwein; great grandchildren, Caden Kramer; Nicholas Kramer; Danielle Kramer; Shannon Kramer; Jacqueline Ellwein; and Kevin Ellwein.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; daughter, Phyllis Kramer; and sister, Edna Ellwein.

KAREN DAY

The service for Karen Day, 64, Aberdeen will be 1:00pm, Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Karen died Thursday, October 23, at Golden Living Center, Groton.

Visitation will be Monday, October 27, 2008 from 1-6pm, with family present from 4-6pm at the funeral home.

Karen Weifenbach was born in Columbia, SD to Henry & Eva (Severson) Weifenbach on July 10, 1944. She attended school in Columbia, graduating from Columbia High School with the Class of 1962.

In February of 1964 Karen married Joseph Hatzenbeller, Sr. Karen worked as a stay at home mother raising their two children Julie and Joseph. In 1973 Karen married David Day. Together they raised four children Julie, Joseph, James, and William. Karen began her career working at Control Data until it closed. In 1989 Karen began working at Hub City Inc., and continued working until a year and a half ago when she had to quit due to illness.

Karen enjoyed playing organ, doing puzzles and working on craft projects. She loved playing softball, dancing, and especially enjoyed fishing with her family.

Grateful for having shared Karen’s life are her daughter, Julie (Dennis) Downs, Osprey, FL; three sons, Joseph Hatzenbeller, Aberdeen; James Day, Aberdeen; William Day, Aberdeen; six grandchildren, Aaron, Carissa, Tony, Angela, Amanda, and Joseph; brothers, Kenneth Weifenbach, Hot Springs, SD; Roger (JoAnn) Weifenbach, Aberdeen; sisters, Geraldine Bremmon, Britton , SD; Carol Johnson, Gillette, WY; Norma (John) Taylor, Moorhead, MN; and Kathy (Glen) Heim, Gillette, WY.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marjorie LaMoureaux and Delores Selzler; brothers, Duane, Donald, Gerald, Edward and Allan Weifenbach.

RAMONA KELSEY

Memorial service for Ramona “Rae” Kelsey, 79, Aberdeen will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 25, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Ramona passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 22.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Ramona Barbara Hamilton was born during a blizzard in a snow bank on January 30, 1929, near Westport, SD. She grew up and went to school in Hecla and Aberdeen. Ramona graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the Class of 1948. After graduating she went to work for C & L Transfer.

On November 23, 1951, Ramona married Roy Kelsey at Aberdeen, while he was on leave from the Air Force. They made their home at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida until returning to Aberdeen in the fall of 1952. Roy then began working at Kelsey Welding. After the death of his father in 1954, Roy took over the shop and Ramona began doing the bookkeeping which she did for many years. In 1983, they sold the business, retired and enjoyed life with family and friends.

Ramona was diagnosed with cancer in May of 2008. She approached her illness the same way she dealt with the rest of life…with resolve and a wonderful accepting attitude. Ramona’s gentle spirit, unique sense of humor and sensitive nature will be missed by all that she touched.

The family would like to acknowledge North Plains Hospice and special friend Dar Christensen for their care and concern in these last months.

Grateful for having shared Ramona’s life are her husband of nearly fifty-seven years, Roy Kelsey, Aberdeen; daughter, Karen (Bill) Edwards, Aberdeen and their children, Nathan (Laura) Edwards; Kelly Rae (Jason) Haskell; Ty (Meghan) Edwards; daughter, Kerma (Tom) Cox, Custer, SD and their children, LoRae (Jon) Getts; Joshua Cox; Treg Cox; Lindsay Cox; and eight great grandchildren; brother, Orville Hamilton; sisters, Beverly (Lyle) Van Dover; Dee Benson.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, LeRoy Hamilton.

MILDRED REGULA

The service for Mildred “Mim” Regula, 87, Eureka, will be 2:00pm, Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mildred died Wednesday, at Eureka Health Care Center.

Mildred “Mim” Regula was born to John & Bertha Regula on January 23, 1921 at Tacoma Park, SD. She attended country school there through eighth grade. After school, she continued to live with her mother and father where she farmed and raised cattle for most of her life. Mim loved her country life! She grew and sold sweet corn to markets in Aberdeen. Mim had a huge vegetable garden, called “Regula Gardens” that brought people from Aberdeen and surrounding areas year after year to get her great produce. She truly had a green thumb. She could take a leaf and grow a big plant. Mim loved her many plants.

Her father passed away in 1977. Mim continued to live and work on the farm with her mother until moving to Aberdeen in 1986. In 1989, her mother passed away. Mim lived in Aberdeen until 2005. Due to her health she moved to the nursing home in Eureka until the time of her death.

Grateful for having shared Mim’s life are her sister, Eleanor (Dell) Milbrandt, Las Vegas; nieces & nephews, Annette (Larry) Zwemke, Sioux Falls; Susan Slane, Las Vegas; Joel Milbrandt, Las Vegas; Carol (Bryon) Hilgemann, Aberdeen; Jon (Pam) Regula, Fargo, ND; Dawn Regula, Eureka; Sheila (Gary) Wolff, Eureka; Bill (Tammi) Regula, Bath, SD; several great nieces & nephews, four great-great nieces & nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John & Bertha Regula; and brother, John, Jr. and sister-in-law, Phyllis Regula.

BERNIECE KINGSLIEN

Services for Berniece Klingslien, 85, rural Mina, formerly of Watertown are at Richland Church, 36781 142nd St., Mina, (15 miles west of Warner), Monday, October 20, at 10:00am, Pastor Ron Wickard & Pastor Jason Dignan officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 P.M. at the Thomas Cemetery, Thomas, SD. Berniece died on October 15, at Angelhaus, Aberdeen.

Visitation: Sunday, October 19, from 2-7P.M., at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Berniece Lorraine Olson was born June 12, 1923 in Willow Lake, SD and graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1942. She received her teacher’s certificate from Augustana College, and taught in Thomas and DeSmet. Berniece married Paul Kingslien on February 3, 1946. After her husband’s military service they farmed at Brookside Farm southeast of Watertown. In 1986 she moved to rural Mina, and in June 2005 to Angelhaus in Aberdeen.

Berniece was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and a caring helpful person to all. She loved to be with her grandchildren and involved in their lives. Berniece enjoyed gardening and was a wonderful cook who was especially known for her pies. She was creative and could make something out of nothing. She was very active in her church including teaching young children in Sunday School for many years. While in Watertown she was a member of the Applebe Extension Club, and worked part time at Loken’s Sale Pavilion.

Grateful for having shared Berniece’s life are her daughter-in-law, Sandy, Austin, Texas, Gene Kingslien, his wife, Dianna, Manhattan, Kansas, one daughter, Kaye Wickard, her husband, Ron, Mina, South Dakota, one sister, Carol (Tom) Vind Hackensack, Minnesota, one brother, Norm (Darlene) Olson, Dayton, Ohio, one sister-in-law, Kathryn (Jim) Parsons, Scottsdale, Arizona, one brother-in-law, Charles Newland, Long Beach, California, 10 grandchildren, Carrie (Ed) Copeland, Jennifer Kingslien, Christy (Brad) Wilcox, Daniel (Stacey) Kingslien, Heidi (Dan) Troyer, Melissa (Matthew) Ranson, Timothy (Andrea) Wickard, Cassandra Kingslien, Peter Wickard, Hannah Wickard, 5 great grandchildren, Connor, Clara and Emylee Copeland, Madison Wickard, Madelyn Kingslien, and many nieces and nephews.

Berniece was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul, son, Myron, and two sisters, Thelma and Esther.

CALVIN LARSON

The service for Calvin Larson, 81, Freeman, will be 10:00am, Monday, October 13, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Pierpont, SD. Calvin died Thursday, October 9, at Oakview Terrace.

Calvin Larson was born at his family homestead in Pierpont, SD on April 16, 1927 to Ed & Carrie (Hannon) Larson. He attended High School in Pierpont for two years, before he entered the service at the age of seventeen in 1944, where he worked as a military instructor for two years. He was very proud of being an instructor. After being honorably discharged, he worked in a meat packing plant. He then went to mechanic school in Fargo, ND. In 1954, he worked at Hansmeier until 1978 when he and Adeline moved to Aberdeen. Soon after, he began working for the Game, Fish & Parks Service until 1980 when he retired.

Calvin enjoyed woodworking, tinkering on things that needed fixing. He loved hunting and fishing. Calvin was a member of the VFW and DAV.

Grateful for having shared Calvin’s life are his wife, Adeline Larson, Aberdeen; sister, Edith Drew, Sioux Falls; and several nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and several brothers & sisters.

VERLE GATES

The service for Verle Gates, 96, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Saturday, October 11, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Verle passed away quietly and peacefully Wednesday, October 8, at Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Verle was born on a farm near Viborg, South Dakota, on September 27, 1912 to Nora (Swenson) and Anton Christenson. Verle was proud to be 100% Dane! She graduated from Viborg High School and attended the University of South Dakota where she received her teaching degree. She taught in Humboldt and Hurley, South Dakota

She and Ellis Gates were united in marriage on July 14, 1935 in Madison, Minnesota. They traveled with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey team throughout the United States, finally settling in Silver Springs, Maryland.

They moved to Tremont Gardens outside Falls Church, Virginia, when Ellis began his work with the United States Government. Their children Allen, Philip, and Claudia were all born in Washington D.C. during this period.

In 1946 the family moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, so Ellis could join his father Ray in the family business, the Gates Funeral Home. Verle became the first woman in South Dakota to receive a Funeral Director’s license.

Verle was member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for over 50 years. She was a member of Monday Musicale and a 50-year member of Chapter BH of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Verle was very active in the Aberdeen School of Hope, serving as its president for several years. She was also a volunteer at the Dacotah Prairie Museum

Grateful for having shared Verle’s life are her Son Allen (Sue) daughter Claudia (Chuck) Sauer and grandchildren Allen Gates II, Jennifer (John) Whitam, Carmen (Brian) Mihelech, and Clark Hoff. Verle was also blessed with six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one son.
